Soldati Hearts #2

Le renard Soldati

Rate this book

The Foxling Soldati is the fast-paced, gripping and wildly romantic sequel to Cochet’s The Soldati Prince. I daresay this story may have even surpassed its predecessor in terms of plot, romance and overall reader enjoyment.

In the first story we met Toka (the sweet Foxling servant to Soldati King Khalon) and Rayner (Khalon’s closest friend and second in command). They’re been in love for centuries, but due to their stations in life and the old laws of the kingdom, they have been unable to be together and mated as they so strongly desire.

With Riley’s arrival to the Soldati kingdom in the first book (as the fated human mate of King Khalon), great change begins to sweep the land, and for the first time in forever, Toka and Rayner begin to hope for the possibility of a future together, especially when their new prince makes it his mission to change the laws that have so unjustly kept them apart. Waiting for change is hard though, and waiting centuries is a long-ass time to fight one’s feelings for the love of one’s life, so it’s understandable when Toka and Rayner finally give in to their desires and begin a physical relationship they’ve heartbreakingly denied themselves until now.

Trouble comes to their doorstep though, when an arrogant and cruel bear king called Pavoni, from a neighbouring realm, comes to visit with his entourage. Pavoni holds a grudge against Rayner for perceived past wrongs and he proceeds to manipulate and deceive in order to cause as much upset as he can to poor Rayner and Toka alike.

Emotions ran high for most of this story, with moments that had me anxious or raging with indignation over the high stakes drama of it all. I never had a doubt that Toka and Rayner would get their HEA, but some of the ordeals they faced to reach their happiness were definitely riveting and oftentimes nerve-wracking.

The fantasy setting and the world-building in this series continues to fascinate me and I eagerly look forward to reading more about these strong and passionate tiger shifters and their mates.

Centuries ago when Khalon took over Soldati for his father, sweet Toka takes his place as a servant in Khalon’s house. When introduced to the court, he catches Rayner’s eye. But it is not meant to be. You see, it is forbidden for servants and higher stationed citizens to mate. However, this can’t stop a heart from yearning….Throw in a vengeful bear king and you have a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’m going to admit, I almost dnf this book in the first few pages due to my own personal preferences. I cannot stand for one mc to save themselves for the other while the other mc goes on to have numerous sexual encounters. And don’t get me started on “it’s only been you” thing they spout. But I trudged on because the writing grabbed me. I was still invested in the story. Plus, I wanted a little more of Riley. I might have a little crush on him...just sayin'.

Honestly, it the beginning, I had in my mind this was going to only be about 2 stars for me because I just wasn’t sure I was going to feel all the “love” between Rayner and Toka. But colored me surprised. I’m glad I pushed on past my own discomfort because in the end, I truly enjoyed it. That’s not to say it wasn’t hard to read, because it was. But I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. I really wanted a HEA for Toka and well, maybe Rayner a little bit too. But I think it's a testament to the author's writing that despite having things I would normally shy away from, she kept me invested in the story and the characters and seeing them in a different light.

I gotta say, all the bullshit of “they can’t be together because of the law” pissed me off. And don’t even get me started on Khalon. He is still an ASSHOLE. I was so mad at him at one point. I realize he had a difficult decision to make but I think he is just too steeped in tradition, laws and “the way things have always been” to see the forest for the trees. Luckily, his mate, Riley, still wants to be mated to him so hopefully he will continue to be the voice of reason and help him to see things a bit differently. It's becoming more and more obvious why the priestess selected Riley to become Khalon's mate.

I’m looking forward to more in this series. Maybe Ezra and Segreti next???

I will note a trigger warning here:

This is the second in the Soldati Hearts books, and I wouldn't go into it without having read the first.

I read through this novella in one sitting. It was unexpectedly intense (there is a trigger warning for references/scenes of sexual assault), fast-paced, romantic, and emotional. It grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

I really adored this couple. Rayner, the Soldati King's best-friend and second, along with his love interest, the servant foxling Toka, were introduced in the first book. They have been having a secret romance since their class differences wouldn't allow for them to officially mate. Toka is adorable, sweet, and smart, and Rayner is a charmer who is so completely smitten with Toka, he can't stop thinking of him. They are so sweet with each other, hoping for a change in Soldati law that will allow them to officially be together. A decision made in Rayner's past comes back to haunt him when the tyrant who leads the bear shifters comes to the kingdom for an official visit and things go very, very bad.

I enjoyed the first book, but I liked this one even more. It packs quite a punch for a novella and really had me on the edge of my seat. Rayner and Toka really go through a lot here, and much of it isn't pretty. Riley and the King are back and play a big part in the story. I love how Riley and Toka's friendship has grown and how Riley has grown more certain in his role and isn't afraid to speak his mind.

I'm so glad I finally read these books and am excited for the next one.

A thoroughly enjoyable little shifter fantasy, this sequel to the Soldati Prince was a nice visit back to the strange and charming parallel universe this is set in.

Rayner, trusted Soldati warrior and best friend and 2nd in rank to King Khalon, has secretly been pining for a little foxling for centuries. Yeah, you heard that right. Talk about a slow burn huh? He and Toka have been eying each other for years, both hesitant to make any grand gestures or official proclamations, mainly because Soldati law prohibits their warriors to mate with the servant class. Darn stoopid laws!

That reason only works for a few hundred years at best and apparently, they are both tired of being held apart. Rayner senses change coming, especially since his king surprisingly and unconventionally married Riley, a deemed inferior human, and hopes that tradition can and will be changed. Before he, Riley, and Toka can conspire, a spiteful adversary pays them a visit to throw a wrench in all the plans. You can see where this is going right??

Bonus points towards Rayner being a sexy beast of a gentle giant when it comes to his endearingly adorable Toka - their interactions and declarations were definitely the best part!! This was fast paced, with a good amount of court politics and plenty of rooting for the bad guy to get his well deserved comeuppance. I can’t say that this was fully fleshed out as this clocks only at 119 pages, but what we got was plenty sexy, a lot of sweet, and a teaser for the next book to come!

Still liked it!

A Solid 4.5 Stars for both the narration and the story.

My, did this pack a hell of a punch in such a short number of pages. It made me laugh, rage, swoon and ultimately made me whoop in joy when all the evil bastards got what they deserved (looking at you evil bastard of the bear-shifter variety).

Once again, like the previous book, I wish this was longer and wished it had an epilogue. It also didn’t explain how there was suddenly the appearance of a certain someone when it supposedly takes days to get where she appeared. Although, it was a negligible plot hole so I didn’t really mind.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this book and it was great bumping into my baby Riley and Khalon(who I wanted to push over the rooftop of a tall building at a point in the book but luckily, he redeemed himself).

With the unexplained “vibe” between Ezra and The General, I do hope there is another book planned for this series. I know for fact I will be reading/ listening to it should that come to pass.

The second book in the Soldati Hearts centers around Toka, the adorable fox servant we met in the last book, and Rayner, one of the Soldati warriors and very good friends with the king. It was obvious there was more to their story in the last story, and now we get to read about them!

I just loved Toka. He is just a sweet, sky, caring and wonderful person, and I love his devotion to his king and his prince. I love that he was also strong when facing challenging times towards the later half of the story, and didn't give in.

Honestly, the thing that stuck out to me was that I found Khalon to be a bit problematic in this one, with his treatment of Toka and Rayner before he finally gets his head on straight. He was a bit pigheaded in his own book, so I think that's just how he will be? It will be interesting to see how he is in the new third book.

These are fun, sweet and sexy novellas with a mix of fantasy and paranormal shifter elements and Charlie always does a great job writing character interactions.

Can't wait for the third story, between Ezra and the bear general.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I loved it! It's a short novella, ~120 pages, but a lot happens and the narration feels complete. It's really good.
Not 5 stars only because I'd loved a longer epilogue.

The Foxling Soldati is the second book in Charlie Cochet’s Soldati Hearts series. This is a really cute and creative shifter series set in a magical world where shifters protect the human realm from demons. While the first book has more interaction with the human side since Riley is human, this story focuses more on the internal politics of the Soldati world. So it was nice here to get another side of the world building and I think it is done well.

I was really excited for this story because we get to meet Toka and Raynor in The Soldati Prince and their flirtation is just adorable. We could see their attraction to one another brewing so it was rewarding to get their story here. While you can probably pick up the basics of the relationship without having read the first book, much of the world building is established there so I think being familiar with that story will help. Also, Raynor and Toka start this book pretty much already having a strong connection, so we don’t see their relationship develop much here, but instead focus more on the conflict once they get together.

I really enjoyed these guys together. Toka is sweet and charming and you can’t help but love him. He and the hunky Raynor make a nice couple and I love the way Raynor dotes on Toka. These guys are solid fairly early on and the conflicts are external, first with the law preventing them from being together, and later with the rival king and the trouble he stirs up. The latter situation sees Toka in some peril and he faces an attempted rape, so things definitely intensify with the story as it continues.

I was so excited to see book 2 in Charlie Cochet’s Soldati Hearts series up to review. I grabbed it the second I could. I fell so in love with Khalon and Riley in book one and was quite eager to see what happened next.

In The Foxling Soldati, we have Toka, who is a royal servant to the king and becomes Riley’s best friend. And Rayner, a Soldati Warrior and the King’s second.

Toka is a foxling that is beyond words wonderful. His strength in who he is and what he needs to do is lovely. He’s in love with Rayner but the law of the land forbids them to ever be due to their stations. Only one who can change the law is the King. And that was so strange to me as to why he wouldn’t. But it’s hard to change something when you’ve only known one way. I could relate to that.

Of course, it’s these laws that make this story thrive. Without it we wouldn’t have taken the dark adventures in this book. The romantic suspense wouldn’t have been as sweet. And the revenge on the villain wouldn’t have been as victorious. It all served a purpose.

Even though this isn’t a long book it packed a lot of story and was very entertaining. If you love witty strong characters and a battle to save the one you love, this is for you.

Such a cutie! Toka is an adorable foxling shifter and he is in love with Rayner, second to the King, Khalon. Their union is forbidden by Soldati law, but their hearts no not wrong. :) When a bully King from another realm visits, he causes nothing but chaos and anger.

I enjoyed this short story and look forward to more in the series. I have an idea and Eyre is in love with a certain "military" leader.

I am seriously loving this series...

'The Foxling Soldati' is the second book in Charlie Cochet's 'Soldati Hearts' and while I did give both of these books 4 stars I have to say I in actual fact did like this one just a tiny bit more. So if I could I probably would have given this one 4.25 stars but somehow that just seems like splitting hairs. So I'm going to call it even at 4 stars and a little more love for this one.

Toka is a Foxling and he's served the Soldati King for centuries and now serves the King's Soldati Prince Riley and as he helps Riley become accustomed to the world of the Soldati, he's also becoming bolder in his dealings with Rayner.

Rayner is a Soldati Warrior and while he takes his pleasure with Toka and he realizes he cares for Toka more than he has any of his other dalliances...a Soldati Warrior falling in love with a servant is unheard if...it's not allowed. But with each encounter his feelings for Toka become clearer and his heart wants what his heart wants and as a Warrior, Rayner doesn't know the meaning of giving up or giving in and he's dertmined to find a way to have Toka for his mate.

As this story progressed I become more and more enchanted not just with Toka, whom we met in the first book and whom I liked from the start but with Rayner. I loved how he was willing to examine his feelings and acknowledge them...even if it was only to himself at times.

The more I saw of Toka the more adored him. His strength of character and willingness to sacrifice everything for those that he cared about and what he believed in proved him to be every bit the equal and warrior that Rayner was known to be.

Added to Toka and Rayner's story was the conflict that it caused between Riley and Khalon the Soldati King as Riley went toe to toe with him in his efforts to make Khalon see that the old ways aren't always the best ways. But the true problem comes in when events from the past conspire to tear Toka and Rayner apart and the efforts of Rayner, Riley and Toka's love for him may not be enough to save Rayner from losing his love and his status as Soldati Warrior.

The world of the Soldati is pure fantasy and this is a genre that I love and with this series Ms Cochet has breathed new life into my love for this genre. I can't wait for whatever comes next in the 'Soldati Hearts' series and I'll certainly be watching for it. So far I've enjoyed this series on audio and the narration of Manuel Pombo. I've loved his voices for the Soldati Characters he's added such a rich and unique tone to them giving them an accent that's not definable as to it's origins and making it purely 'Soldati' in my mind.

RECENSIONE QUI: https://thereadingslove.blogspot.com/...

description

Ok so normally I love Charlie Cochet, but I must admit this is the weakest of her series in my opinion. Both this book and the first feel rushed. I really enjoy the world building, but the characters relationships and decisions haven't felt fully integrated and motivated. It's like in this story Toka and Rayner's relationship is just presumed and this is the kickstart of it moving into each being together, but there's really no explanation as to why things that have gone on for centuries are changing right now. And then the events of the story felt forced to get across a structure that was pre decided upon and have a conflict occur. Ultimately I like these stories since they're fast reads, but they're just ok. I want more out of them.

More shifter goodness from Charlie

This series is definitely a bit lighter in tone when it comes to paranormal but it still brings all the feels.

Here it's the wonderfully sweet foxling Toka and the King's right hand man Rayner who take centre stage.

Throw in a neighbouring bear shifter ruler with an attitude problem and you have another excellent adventure through the Soldati world.

I probably liked this couple more than the first one, but the book was way too short. There was also a part when we find out that Rayner slept with other people, but I ignored it since he and Toka hadn't been together yet. Sure they both had feelings for each other, and the cute Toka saved himself for Rayner, but is not as if what Rayner did (all off page and with barely any infos) was cheating, since they weren't a couple, they hadn't confessed their mutual feelings, and they hadn't slept together yet. Toka was so cute and brave and I loved his char, at one point I almost thought that the sweet fox was gonna be destroyed by that awful Pavoni, but all went well. He didn't give up, he fought and he run. I must admit that I hated Khalon a bit for his decision, but in the end I understood that being a King meant for him to protect all his people and not put his friend and brother, Rayner, before the well being of an entire population. Said that, I still wanted to slap him in the face and I was proud of Riley for voicing his thoughts about that awful decision and how he hated it. Riley is actually a nice character, he too is brave and doesn't back down if something is wrong, not even for his king and mate. Toka and Rayner were really cute and I wish the book was longer, because I wanted to know more about the centuries they lived together and the things that happened before this story started. And not only that, but I wanted also more background and infos about the demons, how the protection of the humans started and by who, which are the other reigns and much more.

Love love love this! Rayner is such a hottie, and Toka is just freaking adorable. It's great to spend more time with Khalon and Riley as well (oh how I love Riley's snarkiness!). Having dispatched with the majority of the world-building in The Soldati Prince, Cochet was able to focus more on the characters in this novella. As with the first story I was sad that this was so short, but I can say that I will be snapping up any other Soldati books that Cochet writes in a heartbeat!

Recensione in ANTEPRIMA
.

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR MY READING PLEASURE **
Reviewed for Divine Magazine

*Warnings: there are a few, that I wasn't really prepared for. There is on page violence, beatings, vocal threats of rape, drugging, manipulation and false allegations. Nothing is too brutally on page, though a few incidents definitely made me squirm.*

Wow! I feel like I've just read some huge 300+ page novel for the serious feels it's left me with. For all the twists and turns, the shocks and the amount of plot that managed to fit so comfortably into 102 pages, it's almost unbelieveable.

I'll admit, I went back to re-read book 1, before starting this, because I love seeing how they link together and reminding myself of how hit all started. Reading them back-to-back is the best way to do that. It reminded me of how much I loved Toka as a character, in book 1, but it also made me appreciate the presence of Riley and Khalon in this book, all the more. Because, although it wasn't their book, they had as much of a presence here as Toka and Rayner had in book 1, as side characters. And, I love that. It's definitely a sign that this series (and this author) doesn't see any “minor” character as mere filler, but as a real potential for a solid, recurring character, which is really great to see and all the better for those of us who want to follow each book from one to the other. When you binge read a series, like I do (often in the same day/week) then you notice these small things and I love them. It makes the characters all the more natural, relatable and important, even if all they ever do is make a brief appearance now and then. Like Ezra and Segreti, who I hope will be the focus of the next book in the series.

What gutted me – amongst the many things – was that Rayner and Toka's love for each other was so obvious that, a year ago, in book 1, Riley spotted it on his first day. Yet, Khalon had no inclination to change the laws to allow them to be together and no one ever realised that Rayner wasn't just using him as a fling. Yet, they'd sneak away for kisses and to be together, just because it was the only way they could do it without drawing unnecessary attention and constant reminders that they couldn't be together. I loved how much Riley fought for them and that he wanted them to be happy, beyond anything else, giving Toka enough hope that he fought through all the bad stuff that was thrown at him here.

There was more sexual content, than in book 1, but it felt a bit more natural, considering Rayner and Toka have known each other for such a long time and have spent so long sneaking away together. It definitely fit the characters, to have intimacy and flirtations from page one, whereas it would never have felt natural in book 1. I actually loved the chemistry between these two, because it was so settled and comfortable. They were happy being open and honest with each other, with hoping for more and fighting for that chance to be together. They're flirtatious, charming, secretive and completely innocent with each other, in ways that are utterly adorable. I love that Rayner is set up to be the dominant male, with the seductive qualities that no one can resist and a past as a bit of a player, but I also love that he comes apart for Toka, that he's more gentle and caring, that he's more romantic with someone he has true affection for. In the same way, I loved that Toka was supposed to be the shy, sweet, naive servant being pounced on by a superior rank, but he's not shy to admit how he feels, nor to be sensual and flirtatious back, when it comes to Rayner. Most of all, I love that they think their time together is limited, but they're willing to make the absolute most of it that they can.

Now, I have a lot to say about the plot, but I really can't say it without giving away a huge plot spoiler, so I'm going to keep it short and simple and hope it still makes sense, without ruining the surprise.

Pavoni is all those words that an Amazon review won't allow. Mostly, the one beginning with a B, although adding in the F word wouldn't go amiss, either.
It made me cry. Because it was hard to read, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the worst to happen and every time it didn't, I felt like I stopped breathing for a minute.
Toka is the bravest little foxling I've ever seen.
When Rayner says “You are better than all of us.” he couldn't be more right. Except for maybe Riley, who is definitely on equal par with Toka, in that regard.
I absolutely hated Khalon for a total of two minutes.

Overall, a fantastic continuation of the series and one that I'm looking forward to following into more books in the future.

Favourite Quotes

““Rayner….” Although his heart was breaking, Toka summoned a smile. “Should the worst come to pass, then I will die happy, knowing I have your affections, having been touched by your hands and kissed by your lips. Knowing you would have me as your mate if you could…. It’s more than I could have hoped for.””

“Forgive me for being a coward . For not confessing my love sooner. Now it comes the eve before I lose you, forever. I thought we had more time. I was never in any rush, believing I had forever with you. I believed I had time to confess my growing affection, my love. Time to change Khalon’s mind about that insufferable law. Time to memorize every dip and curve of your body. A lifetime of seeing your beautiful face, of cherishing your timid smile and those radiant eyes.” He wrinkled his nose as he tried to remain in control of his emotions. “I can’t do this. I can’t let you go.””

A short read, but we'll worth the time.

Charlie Cochet continues world building in the second Soldati story. While not imperative to read the first book it will certainly enhance the reading of the Foxling Soldati.
Raynor and the delightfully mischievous Torka have simmered in lust for centuries. Finally coming together there long awaited uniting is marred by the visit of a neighboring king. This is the first glimpse that we as readers are given of the other kingdoms up until now we have only seen tigers and foxlings in this book we are introduced to the bears and bobcats.
Charlie Cochet does a wonderful job at world building and her characters are always a delight to get to know. The Soldati series is getting stronger and I greatly enjoyed this entry.

Another pretty cover and fun story, a 3.5 for sure! Toka is sweet but not exactly shy, and Rayner is quite smitten with his little foxling and they make for a cute couple. Some drama again with this story, this time with another kingdom and Riley and Khalon as well. Looking forward to more books in this series (I hope, I hope)!

Recensione a cura di NoOne per Feel The Book

Bello e appassionante.

ALL THE STARS!

Charlie should write these types of “fairytales” FOREVER!

While I’m a big fan of her THIRDS stories, I think she is truly EXCEPTIONAL when it comes to her fairy tale type stories. This, her Christmas series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/1174...) and her Intrepid series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/1030...) just absolutely GLOW with her creativity!

THIRDS is funny and sexy and witty, but these series are super creative and whimsical as well as deeply romantic and touching.

First, let’s address that cover – GORGEOUS and so spot on!

Second, OMG Toka and Rayner are so sweet together! I loved how they both were willing to go to extremes for the other and their love. So romantic!!

It was great seeing Riley keep Khalon in control – heh heh. Riley is a great character and I was glad to see him so often throughout this story.

The shifting and the fact that our MCs mannerisms are so like their animal halves is fantastic! So often shifting is just something they do rather than who the character is. Right down to his human coloring, Toka is a fox!

The magic, the mystery, the romance, the action and the sacrifices and the HEA – all superlative.

I can’t recommend this enough and I hope you read book one first because it’s important and awesome.

Hopefully someone amazing will do these in audio format and SOON!
