Full of typos, plot holes, and inconsistencies. I couldn't connect with either character, they both act like they're 12 despite one of them being 300 years old. Actually, even her father acts like a child.
"Hohoho, I can't wait to start doing test!" Dad added, rubbing his hands together like a mad scientist, a crazy grin on his face.

"Me neither!! This is so exciting!" I squealed, literally jumping up and down, clapping my hands like a lunatic.

"Best thing that happened all year!"Dad blurted loudly, throwing his hands in the air.

"Best thing that happened all decade!" I over-exaggerated while holding my head in disbelief.
If the above dialogue appeals to you, and you don't mind flimsy plots, this could be just the book for you.

Combine star crossed lovers with an unusual fairytale and bring to grasp the story behind My Own Human by Arizona Tape.

Adrianna Gisella Von Gerington/vampire and Heather/human stumble upon each other when Adrianna is out exploring. Heather is the ultimate find for Adrianna, since humans are extinct on this bleak futuristic earth along with every life form but vampires. Adrianna studies the lost world of human culture and Heather is a revelation. However, Heather is simply scared witless by the vampire before her. She tries to escape, but she is no match for her vampire nemesis. The capture leads to captivity and to experiments. Adrianna's father shares her interest in Heather the exceptional human subject, but not her attraction to Heather the beautiful woman.

The distant future which provides the dramatic backbone to My Own Human may be more bleak than any other that I've encountered. Vampires are not just the apex species on future earth, but its only inhabitants. These vampires drink a synthesized concoction devoid of blood. They possess strength, speed, beauty, longevity, intelligence, arrogance and cold hearted self centeredness. Human influence, creativity, history and presence was eradicated by two millennia of vampire supremacy. Heather, viewed through her captor's violet eyes, is an anachronism. The unknown history between the end of humanity and hegemony of vampires is 1500 years. As a scientist and historian, Adrianna is thrilled to offer her unique specimen to her father, mentor and powerful nobleman. Adrianna brings Heather back to her home and the lesbian vampire makes her most amazing discovery. Love is a force that not even a twenty six decade old vampire can resist when consumed by a twenty one year old human.

My Own Human tells a tragic love story and fabricates a setting unlike anything that I've ever experienced as a reader. The next book, Your Own Human, promises to continue the plot. While not a cliffhanger as such, part one stops without ending. The choice that Adrianna, is forced to make, seems irrevocable and indefensible. Heather transformed her captor into her captive as their time together coalesced. Vampire society exists independent and contrary to any natural order. Humans would occupy a place there only in hiding, as research subjects, as curiosities, as animal stock or as potential threats. Hopefully, part two tells the rest of this fascinating story.

I generally reserve the 1 star rating for books that not only were bad, but that I can't find any good in or that get to the point that I feel personally offended by the experience of reading them. The best I can say for this book is that it wasn't quite to that level in that I didn't feel offended. Unfortunately, the 1 star still felt justified because this book is simply bad with few redeeming qualities.

First and foremost, the prose is very poor. It feels like a first draft. There aren't a ton of typos, but several glaring grammatical and formatting mistakes make me think it wasn't edited outside of perhaps the author's own quick read through or two. While I try not to judge too harshly on things like this, it made the story harder to enjoy, especially when the first person protagonist is a centuries old vampire who I'm supposed to believe is an intelligent researcher. When she sounds more like a high school kid who skipped English class, the flaws in the prose get to the point that it's hard to really enjoy the story and characters for what they're supposed to be. To compound this issue, the protagonist herself also acts childishly. Some of this is a bit intentional since she's supposed to have difficulty empathizing with her human captive/love interest. That phrasing brings me to the next awkwardness: the relationship between the characters makes very little sense. Adrianna treats Heather like dirt, threatens her physically, and eventually takes part in torturing her. When Heather confronts her about this, Adrianna "feels bad" and apologizes. Then they start teasing, flirting, and making out all over again. It reads like flimsy fan fiction. There is a place for that, but the book is presented as something different and the bits of worldbuilding and setting that crop up defeat the implication that this is just some cheap fun. Some of the romance scenes are cute, but couched in the overall context, given the abusive nature of their relationship, I was left more sickened than anything.

I don't think this book is a total lost cause. There are somewhat interesting world tidbits hinted at here and there that if expanded could be rather interesting. And some of the romance scenes weren't so bad in themselves if more was done to manage at least a vaguely realistic character progression. I just expect more from a book, even a self-published book, than for it to feel like a first draft that hasn't had much feedback on character interaction and reaction. I applaud the author for attempting to tackle a F/F relationship in the context of a post-apocalyptic world full of imbalance between the characters' place in the society. But more needs to be done on a plot and character level if this is going to form a coherent romantic progression that's worth an evening's reading.

This book did not work for me, so I simply stopped reading it.

I think that the story is meant to be read as somewhat tongue in cheek, but I just could not get myself into the appropriate mind frame.

An excellent read!

A speedwalk brings her face to face with a rare creature. From that moment, both lives take a thrilling turn. This is a new spin on the vampires genre and I loved it. It is an unique story and very well written. I've high expectations for the next one and luckily I only have to wait for a little while. The sequel is coming in January and I’m looking forward to it.

This was an interesting concept, but left me a bit disappointed and wanting more. I want to call it "Reverse Twilight" . Basically Adrianna is vampire, and they are the superior race ( humans are allegedly extinct and considered animals) She stumbles across Heather, who happens to be human, and everything that she knows and has learned is turned upside down. Without spoiling the plot, feelings become involved and Adrianna has to make a difficult decision.

The 1st half of the book really grabbed my attention and I thought the book was gonna be awesome. It quickly became too teeny bopperish ( If that makes sense) and the back and forth between the two girls became increasingly irritating. The plot quickly fell flat and the whole point of the story was lost. I'm sure I skipped through a few paragraphs at the end of the book. With that being said, I gave it 3 stars, because of course it has potential and I'm gonna give book 2 a chance to redeem itself. I'm interested in finding out what Heather knows about the human/vampire history, the mysterious missing 1500 years, and if they finally hook up because damn... that was a tease.

This story kept reminding me of My Immortal by Tara Gilesbie. If you know what that is, then you know that's not good. It's really not good.

I won't dig into this too much, because I am fairly certain that it is an early authorial attempt by a young teen, and if that is the case, then good on them for the accomplishment. When I was a young teen I certainly wasn't writing novels, even bad ones, so who am I to criticize. Now, with that said, this book reads like bad fanfiction. The characters are childish, the writing is full of spelling errors and bad grammar, the plot is ridiculous, and the romance makes no sense. It's also annoying that the vampires aren't really vampires, but instead are super powered humans, and the setting is a post apocalypse, but the synopsis does little to prepare you for that.

I can't really recommend this to anyone, simply because it isn't mature writing. Not in the sense that it is written for children, rather in the sense that it seems to be written by children.

I absolutely loved this story. It had everything that I loved in a book and then some.

Arizona doesn't seem to be able to do wrong. Having read her My Winter Wolf Series and Danny's Dance, I knew that I was in for treat.

I am usually all for action in books as it's what I'm used to in books, but I found that, even though this was a PNR book, the tone that she set up allowed for there to be no reason for any action. It was a sweet book about the connection between two different species and how they go about overcoming the prejudices against each others and their own, the forbidden relationship and how to coexist in a world that is so new and different.

The characters are so believable and relatable and act in situations you would expect of them. Adriana is a vampire, who lives on her own. She is fascinated with history and humans, how they lived, what they did, the language etc., so when she stumbles across Heather, she can't wait to be able to study her and takes her back to her place. I loved how Adriana was so "normal". She had a short temper and blew up in situations other people wouldn't really blink an eye to or get as annoyed with. She wasn't the controlled, strong MC that you see in every other story. She was flawed, and flawed in a way that is so realistic. I'm sure everyone out there knows someone who has a short fuse and it was so refreshing to see a character like that! I found myself wincing at stuff Adriana would say or do and be like. . . oh no, Adriana isn't going to like that! hehe. . . Even though she thought strategically, she had moments of weakness and forgetfulness and where her emotions would get the better of her and this was another thing I loved. . . She's human! Even though she isn't. . .

Heather was feisty and argumentative and pigheaded and strong, sassy, courageous, stubborn at times and this clashed with Adriana's personality as well. . And my thoughts kept on leading me to some friends who are exactly the same and I would chuckle whenever they would have their little tiffs haha. . I love Heather, she has a vulnerability and strength in her that is wonderful. She understands what is right and wrong and how she should be treated and is not scared to voice them, even though she is with someone who could easily kill her.

I love that she made the vampires not having titles for sexual preferences and they just date whoever they like and no one even cares. Made me want to live in that world, although, it isn't free of it's own prejudices, and sees humans as inferior beings and not worth their time. What I loved most is that you had a story that is based on the relationship of two women. Not a man and a woman. I've never read a book - outside of erotica - that was based on a same sex relationship or wasn't a secondary character. Again, something refreshing to read. When they would have their arguments or act a certain way, I kept thinking. . . Yep, that's pretty much how we act. . . . irrational at times to the point of insanity hahaha. I could go on and on about their relationship and how I loved the balance between human and vampire and how even the characteristics of both species blended perfectly in Adriana.

Heather holds some secrets that she has yet to tell Adriana. She is a mystery, a mystery I want solved. She has yet to give any part of herself to Adriana, what she was doing at that place where Adriana found her, what happened to her? etc. etc. I'm hoping all of these will be revealed in the next book.

Prepare to get all gushy when reading this book as there are a couple of really sweet moments in this book between Adriana and Heather and I swear to god if they get interrupted one more time I am going to have strong words with Arizona about why they keep on getting beaver dammed. It's not fair for there to be so much coitus interruptus!!!

I'm lucky I have so many other books to read til book 2, because I think I would go insane with having to wait for what will feel like a millennia ;o ) for the next one.

Highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an awesome read.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ari's My Own Human! I liked the different outlook/storyline about vampires and humans that Ari painted for us. We get to know Ade, an awesome vampire nerd who loves to research and is kinda obsessed with the "extinct" human race and their history (which she believes can't possibly be real, especially how our books portray vampires haha). She gets a surprise of a lifetime when she encounters one of these humans who was thought to no longer exist.

This story is a wonderful telling of Ade's curiosity and geekiness but also of her inevitable falling for her own human. I don't normally read F/F stories, but Ari has seemed to make that a non issue with the multiple F/F stories I have read from her. It's all about the budding love and obstacles that these 2 are going to have to deal with and overcome.

Ari has done a wonderful job with this story and can't believe she almost didn't publish it <3 BTW loved the beginning with Ade and her Dad. The family camaraderie with loving history and being so engrossed in something they didnt realize how much time passed (apparently days and weeks fly by for vampires who live to be super old) was adorable and made me think of times my dad and I have been so engrossed in an activity together (gardening, watching football/baseball, etc.) that we didnt realize half the day was already gone!

I don't normally do the whole vampire thing, but Arizona's story kept popping up in my recommendations, so I decided what the heck. "My Own Human" Is told in the first person from our human-obsessed vampire, Adrianna from an earth far flung in the future where 1500 years of history is missing and all humans and animals are presumed dead. Society is run by vampires now. Adrianna is a history nerd and is drawn to the missing human years like a moth to a flame when out on a walk she stumbles upon Heather, a human. There's not a whole lot of world building beyond that. Everything else is about building the characters through dialogue mostly. They fall in love fairly quickly, but given how short the book is it does take almost half the duration to do so. They part even quicker leaving us with a small cliffhanger of estranged lovers. Since we are always in Ade's mind her emotions and intentions are clear, but Heather is less obvious and we can only see what Ade infers or by guessing from her actions. I found the two very frustrating, but in a "God, just screw already. You total want each other" kind of way. Not entirely unpleasant. A very quick read, but a satisfying one despite a few grammatical errors and typos. If you like vampire fiction these are more vampires in name only, but they do have fangs, retractable ones, and they like to growl quite a bit.

This is the first book in the futuristic Lesbian, My Own Human Duology. It is looking into the question, can a human live in the Vampire society. After capturing Heather, a beautiful human, Adrianna finds her self drawn deeply to her. This is a world where humans are suppose to be extinct along with animals. Vampire s rule the world. Adrianna has developed feelings but how would this work? How can she possible choose between her heart and her vampire duties?

This is an interesting book that deals with a creative version of a vampire paranormal romance between a human woman and a vampire female. I enjoyed the interplay between the two main characters and the way they tried to understand how each other thinks. The storyline is easy to read. The emotional drama comes from the lack of consideration they each have for the other as they try to come to terms with what and who they are. They develop feelings for each other and deny those feelings creating a back and forth sort of relationship. This book is imaginative and the author crafts it in such as way as to make the character realistic in that they know nothing true about each other. It’s a very different kind of book but one I enjoyed.

This is the first book in this series. A great idea of turning the tables on the concept of humans and vampires, I enjoyed this book. A mesmerizing book the writing was amazing. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters captivating. The characters were developed and thought out. Heather is a human and Adrianna is a vampire are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, tests and experiments, no animals or insects, food issues, council, library, separation and so much more in this book.

Here is a quote from the book, “No, Not even you,” Heather stated, but I could hear how she tried to keep her voice steady. “You sure? So, if you aren’t attracted to me, one little kiss won’t hurt, right? I grinned, flashing her a wicked smile. “W-What? No, no, I don’t want to kiss you,” she clearly lied.”. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can recommend. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Hermoso.

I really enjoyed My Own Human which is the first book in this series. I got different emotions while reading this, from anger to how they treated Heather as a lab rat when Adrianna first found her to happiness when Adrianna and Heather finally started getting a long with each other.
This story will leave you with a lot of questions at the end just to be warned but there is no blood drinking and other 'vampiry' things.
This story was a thrill to read but that is if you are into vampire stories. This story gives you a different take on vampires especially when referring to Adrianna, who is quite the book worm who is obsessed with knowing a lot about the 'extinct' human race and their history.

Just give this story a try it was a really good read for me.

Love doesn’t Judge

What is amazing is the story is about a scientific vampire who falls in love with a human, whom become an extinct species. It is the story behind Arianna and Heather that grabs the attention. Told from the point of view of Arianna’s and her perspective, there is a lot of noise and drama unfolding as she is introduced to many emotions and experiences. A bit long in some parts but overall a good story.

Plus the girls never got their “missing history gap” testimonies told to one another. It seems sexual attraction kept distracting them. Falling in love doesn’t dictate gender preference, because love doesn’t judge and is blind to all flaws. As long as you find that special someone who completes you, love unconditionally and wholeheartedly.

Nice story but with a few editing problems.

First the good, this is a good story. The growing relationship between Ade and Heather is well written. It is a nice sweet lesbian romance. The world is realised enough to let you believe in it. And there is a hint at a mystery surrounding the nature of the world that is hopefully explained in the second boom.

Now for the bad, this is not well edited. There are too many pages of speech with no tags to tell you who is speaking which makes it hard to follow. Also there are a few obviously incorrect words that a good edit should have picked up. Saying that the flaws in the book do not ruin it. And I will be buying the second boom to see how the story ends, plus finding out the secrets hunted at in this book.

This is a beautiful story about Ade, who is a bibliophile obsessed with reading about the past and where she and her people came from, she is also a vampire

When she find Heather, a human, she is over the moon as humans are extinct and she is excited to experiment and study a real live human

That is of course before she starts to fall for her. This is a great, well written story with a completely different take on vampires, it is emotionally touching and watching Ade and Heathers relationship and feelings progress from when they discover each other and through the story, is beautiful and such a great read. I am very looking forward to book two, I highly recommend this book

Such and interesting take on vampires

This is such an interesting take on Vampire. Be warned you will be left with many questions at the end! There is no blood drinking, no glittering and no night dwelling here. The author has set the book in the future and there Re now humans left. The two MCs of the story, Ade and the Heather are fantastic together and I love them. The author does a Cm great job in my opinion working through the complexity of being with another person especially another woman. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to read the next one!

Normally I’m quite flexible..but although the story revolves between the two characters, I’m missing the world building. To many things are left unclear. And once this is acknowledged and promised to be addressed..it’s not.

I would say I like the book, but due to the lack of world building it made it hard for me to determine the backdrop. The most issue I had is the gap in history..all humans are extinct..why?how? And where did heather came from? And why now? I’m trying book 2, but since book one is quite short, I see it as a continuation of the first book, like a new chapter.

This book is supposed to be about vampires but it was disappointing that the author redefined the meaning of vampires making the lead character just a superhuman with fangs. The story is a bit messy and not coherent. The characters fell too easily to each other, there was no major issue or it was not highlighted well. There was no focus on the story. The way the main character's thought is written is too messyly and she talks to herself too much. The author dwelled too much on describing the very detail of some things that it becomes too boring to read.

Far in the future, vampires live on this Earth and humans are extinct. A very likable, educated vampire discovers a human during her explorations and falls in love. I loved the two main characters' voices, distinct and funny, really nice chemistry between them. Nothing much happens story wise but I think the book is meant to be a solid introduction to Adianna and Heather which it achieves. I am definitely hooked and will seek out book 2 in the series.

An interesting idea. 2000 years into the future and vampires is all there is. The humans are extinct, or so is believed.

Not a bad read, but I didn't particularly care for either of the characters and the idea itself could have been done better. In the end I thought it was all a bit silly and difficult to believe how in all that time, they'd never seen a human before, but maybe that's explained or explored in the next book. Not bad to pass the time.

Needs work.

I really wanted to give this a 2.5 star review. The story was interesting enough that I wanted to see what happened next, but it read a bit like a fan-fic. There were quite a few editorial issues, and I didn’t love the writing style. I think with a little TLC and some editorial input, it could be much better. Not sure that I will spend the money on the sequel, though I am curious how the story will end.

This is an interesting take on the vampire genre. In this book we get to meet Ade (insert fluttery eyes) and her very own the Heather (yes, yes the 'the' is intentional). We get to follow their relationship from Ade's, of course, startled discovery of an extinct species, human. Of course twists and turns happen and some steamy scenes between these two. Definitely a must read!

I wanted to enjoy this book. The premise was cute, the idea was one I haven't seen before, and I like lesbian vampire novels.

This book was not engaging, the characters were one dimensional, and the bizarre expectation of a woman trapped with her vampire was a forced cliche of an unequal power distribution.

I'm sorry I wasted my time on the book.

I really enjoyed this book! Not every single PNR book needs to have action and suspense to keep the reader pulled into the book and this one did a wonderful job. I loved how there was a different outlook for the vampires and eventually humans. Everyone on earth is a vampire and they believe that humans are extinct, but Adianna finds out otherwise.

Adrianna and Heather are cheeky and funny and they are a riot. Humans made vampires but they don’t know that. Humans are extinct for all intents and purposes. When Adriana finds this human her and her father experiment on her until she realizes that she’s fallen in love with the little human. Fun read.
