243 books9 followersMax Finkelstein created Jim Hamond, the Human Torch, for Timely Comics (later evolved into the Marvel Comics) in 1939, using the pen-name Carl Burgos. He also created the Thunderer for Daring Mystery Comics. Both series were published by Timely Comics, the forerunner of Marvel. He was drafted in 1942 and did mostly commercial art in subsequent years, occasionally drawing science fiction stories for Marvel, by that time known as Atlas. He also drew the first story featuring the Beetle (Abner Jenkins) in Strange Tales #123, starring Johnny Storm, the second Human Torch. Two years later, in Fantastic Four Annual #4, Marvel published a battle between the two Human Torches, resulting in the death of Jim Hamond. Although his daughter tried to preserve as much as possible, Burgos set fire to much of the Human Torch materials he had retained from the 1940s, considering the story an excuse to reassert trademark on a character they were not using simply to spite him.

The Human Torch
Who boy, this plot feels a little familiar. A plague has just hit New York City and our friend Dr. Stone has been trying to slow its spread. After evacuating city blocks he declares the only way to slow the spread is by burning those buildings down, cleansing the virus. Incidentally a property owner is actively try to stop this solution, as they would miss out on the rent from those buildings. Anyway, Torch starts a quarantine on the afflicted part of the city and fixes the problem (I think), but now we're on a hunt for the mysterious J. B.!
The Sub-Mariner
I don't think Namors plan of letting their American prisoners go will really keep their kingdom free of other Americans. So the list I'm going off of must be out of order, as Namor fights his American adversary in this story. He wins. Kicks ass really, although like I said, his plan sounds iffy.
The Masked Raider
Another story of a man dressed as a woman getting away with crimes. Idk, I think I'm done reviewing Raider so.. ⭐.5
Adventures of Ka-Zar the Great
When a known criminal and big game hunter is shown to have bought land in Ka-Zars Belgian Congo, Ka-Zar decides that actually that's not to be the case and sets out with his adopted lion-dad Zar and elephant friend Trajah. After breaking into his land, Zar is shot and captured, then kidnapped by another hunter and smuggled out to America. Next issue will be our first time out of the jungle as the boat were on is headed to America! I'm excited to see jungle boy in the big city.
Terry Vance The Schoolboy Sleuth
I was a little bummed at first that they replaced Ferret Mystery Detective with this kid but on his second story its actually kind of fun. Just a boy and his hyper smart monkey stopping small time crimes. Fun stuff. Terry got fucking rocked up the face by an adult in this issue, it took me a bit by surprise!
The Angel
Angel fucks up an entire subterranean city of giant monsters, gets a new suit, and watches as a thousands year old person crumples into a skelington. So yeah, pretty decent story.
Electro: The Marvel of the Age
Remember when Electro and Professor Zog went to space and fought in a race war to decide the fate of that planet? Well they stopped a forest fire this time.

In the good ole days mercury was cool
And it was Terry Vance's, the boy with a hundred hobbies, playmate.
Now Electro has a new face than can speak his thoughts, The Angel fights even bigger ghouls in the center of the earth, Sub-Mariner proves to be a pretty cool guy appreciating a good lovestory, The Torch fights black plague the only what he knows: by burning stuff up and Ka-Zar with his brother, the lion Zar, move to America. Overall things keep moving around as Marvel tries to find his tone.

The Torch story was pretty fun, I liked seeing the Torch having to try and save people while also being on the run from the NYPD which continues into the next issue. Namor is so petty and I love it, this issues story wasn’t outstanding but was fine. This was probably the first Angel story I completely enjoyed, trying to go darker. Raider and Electro were standard unfortunately. Zogs face displayed on Electro is a terrible design change lol, the Angles flight suit works for me though.

As always, Torch and Namor have the best stories. I preferred Namor’s story here, though his cunning plan to let the captives escape is… weird, and very likely not work. But overall, it was a good story and I like this new nemesis. Reading Torch’s story in the present, post-COVID, probably makes his tale feel all the more poignant.
Ka-Zar’s stories have started to feel very perfunctory, like they are mandated to be here rather than because someone has an interesting story to tell. Which is a shame, because the series has had some great moments. Electro is back to being boring, though now with a goofy television-face. Put him back with the bonkers aliens and it would be much better.
Angel’s story is weird. I don’t hate it, but honestly, despite quite the setup last issue, he doesn’t really *do* much. He meets a woman held by these lanky morlocks and she gives him a magic suit so he can fly real good. He then flies real good and his flying skills helps him commit genocide, á la Anakin Skywalker. There doesn’t seem to be an explanation as to why this woman was being held down there, what did they want her for? The aesthetics feel very original Star Trek, especially the flight suit, and the damsel captured by aliens is very Kirkian.

Concepts are improving like the underground city of giants. But some things don’t change. The text story was anticlimactic and the insistence that a woman either to be rescued or as an assistant is outdated.
