Time Tracers by Annabeth Bondor-Stone was a great and refreshing read. I liked the idea that the author thought about how the time that people think passes super fast because we're having fun, is actually being stolen by Time Thieves, bug-like creatures that feed of your fun memories so you literally have no recollection of what happened.
Taj Carter, a kind of kid who always has a good time, figures something is wrong when he wakes up on what’s supposed to be the first day of summer vacation only to find that his entire summer is gone! He goes to school on what's supposedly the first day of school and is horrified to discover that everyone else at his school, including his friends, had experienced the same trouble as him. To make the matter worse, even his P.E. teacher had his head mixed up from all time loss. Luckily, Eon, a Time Tracer, finds him and exposes him to a new level of vision when he can finally see what was causing all of this, the Time Thieves, who actually stole the time from everyone in town.
Taj finds out that he is the Worm, a person that can return stolen time to their owners, and gets whisked off on an adventure of mystery to find the boss behind all of this, and how he came into the possession of a time scanner, a super-device that could scan the locations of Time Thieves. Taj, Eon, and Syd (a Time Tracer who excelled at fighting Time Thieves) later find out that the identity of the boss was actually the former "Father Time" who faked his death and stole a Time Scanner from the Time Tracer corp, all while releasing a dangerous Snoozer (a Time Thieve that could steal sleep time) that was imprisoned.
In the end, Taj somehow returns the stolen memories back to everyone and gets back on the second day of school to see all his peers happier and less frustrated now that they had their summer memories back. Eon visits him one last time and gives Taj a bracelet that recognized his time as a Time Tracer.
I really liked this fast-paced novel packed with a ton of action, mystery, and science-fiction. I hope the author will continue writing terrific takes based on mysterious sayings in life, just like this one!
