Canadian architect Todd Saunders writes about purchasing a lot for his dream home in Norway. After buying a disused park, he discovered much of the property was bog. Undeterred, he dug out the plot and replaced it with rock, creating a home where much of house is propped on stilts above the ground. Peter Gluck lives in New York State's Catskill Moutains, where he placed his living room above a switchback staircase. Each room in British architect Norman Foster's home faces the Mediterranean.

Through photographs, sketches, diagrams and stories, prominent contemporary architects explain how and why they built their own homes. Architects Houses is both informative and entertaining, with easy-to-read text and beautiful pictures. There's a lot of concrete and a lot of unusual angles. The stories are great and it's easy to spend a lot of time with this book.

Recommended for those interested in houses, design and how people who spend a lot of time thinking about both choose to live.

Us mere mortals are very unlikely to ever live in buildings like these, but there's no reason why we shouldn't enjoy looking at these examples of ingenuity, often life-long contemplations of what and how their houses should look like, the wild creativity that is invested in these, as well as some in-depth mathematical and seasonal considerations.
