Written by Cai Dongfan, this book is the popular historical novel of the history of the Five Dynasties in "Chinese History by Cai Dongfan". There are a total of 60 chapters. From Zhu Wen's usurping of the Tang Dynasty to military mutiny at Chenqiao by Zhao Kuangyin, this book wonderfully interprets the fifty-three years' history of the Five Dynasties. The author widely collects information from official history and novels. The narration is smooth, fluent and systematic. There are self-assessments and self-annotations. The language is humorous.

About the author

蔡东藩，1877年农历六月十三生，名郕，字椿寿，号东藩，清山阴县临浦（今属萧山）人。著名演义小说作家、历史学家。14岁中秀才，后又进京朝考，名列优贡，分发福建候补知县，因不满官场恶习，数月即称病回乡，辛亥革命之后，曾先后在杭州及绍兴等地教书。1916年开始蔡东藩用十年时间完成了《中国历朝通俗演义》，时间跨度自秦始皇到民国九年，凡二千一百六十六年。其内容跨越时间之长、人物之众、篇制之巨，堪称历史演义之最。被人誉为“一代史家，千秋神笔”。蔡东藩这套演义重史轻文，尽管略输文采，但却提供了一部浩瀚而通俗的中华通史，为普及中国历史知识做出了不可磨灭贡献。
