There’s a monster on the loose, and only I can stop him.
My enemy Drakon is on the hunt for dragons, and I’m on the hunt for him. Problem is, he’s a step ahead of me every time. Worse, I’m a pawn in chess game only he understands.
When Drakon puts my hometown under a horrifying freezing spell, I get the first terrifying clue to his plan. My family is trapped, slowly wasting away. I must break the spell before it’s too late, but the task might kill me.
Though I’ve got my friends at my back, I’m the only one who can stop Drakon. And I'm not sure my magic is strong enough to do the job.
Enemy of Magic is a fast-paced fantasy mystery with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
Well as the last book ended the manipulative Drakon was severely wounded and had lost his human skin leaving him a shadowy dragonlike figure. He's always just out of reach and Nix and her friends know they have to somehow stop him but his plans keep him constantly one step ahead. Nix discovers a horrifying grey mist shrouding the town where her parents are that's keeping all within paralysed. Knowing she needs to not just put a stop to Drakons plans connected to the lost dragons plus save her family is just the start though as it's soon apparent that a fellow FireSoul has been abducted and Nix is sure that it's somehow all connected. This is the fourth book and if the author follows her usual pattern I'm guessing the fifth instalment will see Nix and Drakon facing off for the last time. There wasn't as much traveling around in this book but we still get quite a bit of historical legends thrown in to keep the reader entertained and this time it's fabulous Norse mythology. These three crazy brave women are usually out treasure hunting but there's no time for that in this story as Nix really needs to find out exactly what Drakon is up to and when she does it's seriously eye popping stuff! Still with previous characters popping up to add to the fun it's certainly an action packed ride. Plus if it's dragons you want then allow me to introduce Jeff but if you read Origin of Magic then you probably can guess exactly who or what I'm referring to! Now I know this isn't strictly a romance but start cheering everyone because Nix not only opens up her trove to the hunky Ares but finally her heart too. I will just add that these books are best read in order . This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
The need to find out what Drakon’s plan is has been building up to this moment and I have to say it was well played by the author. Everything is finally coming together and I really enjoyed seeing the pieces finally falling into place. The part that I actually enjoyed the most was learning about the dragons and their history. They’ve always been in the background and yet there has never been any concrete information about them until now and it all makes perfect sense.
I’m loving how all the unique characters we’ve met throughout the series, at least the “good” ones, are stepping up to help in the fight and am looking forward to seeing how everything comes to a head in the next, and last book.

YEA for Dragons!!!! Nix is on yet another part of her mission with the help of new magic, new memories, her loving friends and new allies, dragons, and her sexy vamp. Things are getting rocky but with all of this support, I know Nix can do concur their enemy.
like the previous book, it was messy and there was no clear goal of what they want at the moment. all i knew, one time they were doing this in here, and the next, they rushed because they had to do this somewhere else. and their adventures were impossible. they only survived because they were the main characters.
Recap: nix was tending her garden when she saw the dragon. she immediately told cass and del about it but the dragon teleported to P&P. she planned to ask her mom about it when Ares came so they went together. when they arrived, something was wrong because the dome that protected Elesius turned into smoky gray and reeked of dark magic and it was painful to touch. she took some sample of the smoke and brought it to the blood sorceress sister. on the way, they met Aethelred and he saw a vision where one day, the person Ares loved the most would die (well duh)
the smoke turned out to be a very dark freezing spell that was ancient and they didn't know how to undid it so they planned to ask Laima. they went to the vampire court, faced some challange from kamikaze sparrow, bombardier by fireballs, answer to some riddle, and eride in the middle of thunderstorm to reach the fate goddesses' castle. after they ate and showered, they finally meet their fabulousness.
the goddesses said that they had a vision of dragon killer, which was drakon, and that dragons were still alive but in hiding. they said the location in the prophecy was somewhere that involved norse myth then they gave nix a sword that could cut through anything. that's all, they planned to meet them to ask for the dark spell in Elesius but they never did. GENIUS. then they made out in Ares's place but interrupted by nix's dragon because there was something wrong back at magic's bend.
they met the others in P&P along with Corin and Fiona, saying that Alton went missing but Nix got a clue that the dragon was in norway. so Cass and Aidan went looking for Alton while nix, del, roarke, and ares went to Norway. they met a dwarf, who offered them magical Amber to pay for the passage but the dwarf was bloodthirsty and he summoned his friends. nix tricked them to show the boat first and after a ghost and its boat appeared and the dwarf gave her the amber, she payed him with beautiful sword but he and his friends immediately attacked her but they managed to rushed to the boat almost unscathed.
their pilot was a battle crazed viking and he almost brought them to a viking sea battle they saw on the way but the vikings saw them and chased them. they managed to ran away when a huge wave carried nix and del overboard but the guys saved them and they were chased by angry spirit of the death that was driven to carried them back to the depth. when he neared, nix saw him tangled with seaweeds and immediately choked him so they could escaped. they arrived to a very tall fjord with stairs that they had to climb if they didn't want to meet dark elf but light elf. when they were climbing, they met the Jörmungand's (snake of the world) kids, a flying snake.
they almost died but the elf came in time to their rescue. they stayed the night in their place and the next morning continued their journey on reindeer. the elf said she could ask a rock how to travel safely to the mountain and the rock said something like follow the rabbit and avoid the Jötunn. they arrived to a stave church and entered, found a wooden statue of a valkyrie that came to life when nix touched it. the valkyrie said she that the dragon went on a hide because Drakon had been hunting them down and stole their power. they were sleeping somewhere in the highest mountain in Norway and gave their spirit to the most worthy people, hence the firesouls.
but stealing the dragons' power wasn't easy because he was not a firesoul so he had to use a powerful spell that involved sacrifice. he used a freezing spell to immobilize his victim then slowly took their magic, and his next target was Elisius. and Elisius was also Nix's power source so if it fell, her magic would also diminished. worse, the dragon was the source of all magic so if he killed all of them, magic would die. they reconciled to P&P and Cass said she could not teleport to whoever Alton was so the three of them tried again and it brought them to the border of Elisius. but there was monster that protected the border and they had to scanned the border so they needed some transport, which brought them back to Ana and Bree.
Nix and Ares went back to Death Valley, offer them this job, and went back the next day with Cass and Kelly, a powerful transporter who could move the buggy to Elisius' border. they fought some monsters, some shadows, and some giant when they spotted Alton in an orb in the middle of a clearing when some demons attacked them again when Jeff (nix's dragon) came to the rescue and they managed to call for Kelly when they saw Drakon.
they returned bree and ana to dead valley, returned to ancient magic to rest for a few hours and nix got a dream of a forest spirit that showed her a weak spot in the barrier. then, they recoup with the others to plan what to do. they all came, the league of firesoul (who said that they won't leave a firesoul behind in front of the others who didn't know they were firesoul), the blood sorceress, connor and claire, and bree and ana. they teleported back to Elesius and Nix went inside alone but she was attacked by Drakon. fortunately her sword could hurt him and she could destroy the freezing dome and released everyone in Elesius (it was ridiculous how everyone were immediately for battle after being frozen for days).
the others battled against the demons (and the too strong Elesius people too) while Nix and Cass in griffon form attacked drakon again. she managed to harm drakon badly enough that he backed off and the battle finished (again, very anticlimactic. and what was worse, this book could've finished here but noooo, there should be book 5 and the vampires haven't joined the fight yet🙄)
even the casualty didn't make sense! none of nix's friends got injured but 4 of her people died (?!). Alton the mind reader said that he was used to be a battery for the stealing power spell and it worked, drakon only needed to have another black-gem battery (that one was taken by them and sent to the Illuminarium, an institue of knowledge in vampire realm) and he would need more firesoul so he could use their power-stealing ability. the end (thank God)

Enemy of Magic by Linsey Hall is Book 4 of the Dragon's Gift: The Protector Series.
Honestly, I can’t get enough of this series!! These are fabulously-done, fast-paced reads that will take you on one helluva reading adventure. Original storylines, solid world building, and kickass characters will suck you right into Ms. Hall’s fascinating story.
This is a young adult, urban/fantasy paranormal series that is absolutely amazing and while it may be geared towards young adults, this series will most definitely appeal to one and all. Highly recommended to PNR and fantasy readers alike.
Please note that an ARC was generously provided in exchange for an honest review of which this is both honest and completely voluntary.
Fighting Drakon has been insanely difficult for Nix and the others, but this book lends hope to the fight. I'm excited Alton made it through his kidnapping. The final battle in the next book will be about sacrifice. I strongly hope Nix, Cass, Del, Ares, Aidan, Roarke, Connor and Claire make it through. Go Jeff! Happy reading!
I seem to recall that originally Cass wasn’t able to transport into the realm Nix comes from; Ares was able to because of his own special powers. So why is it that, this time around, everyone and their brother seems to be able to transport there? Maybe I missed a brief explanation, but I don’t remember anything that addressed it.
The group ends up splitting up for a bit, and there’s a marvelous extended Indiana Jones-like sequence in Norway that involves ghost ships, dark dwarves, light elves, winged serpents, and a valkyrie. I also love the extended fight scenes that take place in Nix’s home realm. A few side characters make a comeback and help to keep the action quotient up–Ana and Bree bring their tricked-out "buggy" along for a wild ride. We also get to find out more about the dragons–what happened to them, and how they relate to FireSouls!
I also have to love a character who names their familiar plant-dragon “Jeff”. Nix is a little bit crazy when it comes to the risks she takes, yet she never loses that wholesome vibe she has. She’s a nice, original character in a series that sometimes gets a bit formulaic. She also has good chemistry with her romantic interest, Ares. The two of them get to spend a little time together in this one, though of course things are proceeding at a pace that prevents much time for snuggles.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the fight with Drakon ends. He’s such a massively powerful enemy, and the stakes are so high now.
Nix is talking to herself. Oh boy, I know I saw something up here in my trove. I just know I did! Whoosh! There it goes again! Like a red green streak. Hello! What have we here? I have got to be hallucinating, I rub my eyes. Its still there, hovering in mid-air , looking at me. Then pop! It disappeared? What the…….Where did he go?
Drakon kept taunting Nix and her companions. His minions were EVERYWHERE! Dark, Evil, Demonic beings who wanted nothing better than to tear Nix limb from limb. But what was his plan? Where was he going to strike next? The meeting place was always P & P, where Connor and Claire lived and all the others met to plan. Pop! the little green dragon appeared out of nowhere. Holy Crap! Del saw him. Cass too! Then Connor did. First stop Elesius to talk wiht Mom and find out about this dragon! Whoah! What’s that! As I slammed into some barrier.. a dark gray misty barrier..that felt Dark and sick! Well now we know the WHERE, if you want to know more about the WHAT and WHY, pick up your copy of Enemy of Magic! You’ll be so glad you did! Hurry Linsey, my imagination is already working overtime thinking about the NEXT chapter.......
I was given an ARC but the Review is freely given and all mine!
This entry in the series was a nonstop roller coaster ride of a classical hero’s journey, as have the three previous novels. It was imaginative and pulled out all the Norse mythological and Viking stops. The battle against Drakon escalates with him holding hostage several people Nix cares about.
Hall’s novels are not the ones to read if you want in-depth character development or wanting to know what other characters are thinking. They are exclusively first person and its narrators, particularly Nix are a bit aloof, incurious in assessing others’ thoughts and emotions. As I continue to read them, obviously I have agreed to enjoy them for what they are. Still, I found the lack of reaction by Ares to all he finds out about FireSouls and their role unsatisfying specifically and in generally, while his actions shout how he feels about Nix, he is frustratingly reticent in stating what he’s thinking and feeling about the how the Vampire Realm is reacting to all this, his feelings about this new circle of friends he’s become part of and just about everything else except he likes Nix a lot and will follow her into any danger.
Nix’s penultimate book. When Nix has an unexpected visitor to her Trove, she starts to look for answers- which lead her to discover that not all is well at her hometown of Elesius. To discover the answers, she and her friends have to make several journeys to discover what’s happening, before they can battle the cause.
All kinds of events in this one, which involve Nix and Ares travelling in an exhausting schedule, and frequently fighting off danger. There are some interesting answers/revelations throughout, which gear us up for the final book in the series. As is typical in this world, the book is a faced paced, action filled tale. There’s lots of danger and do-daring, and a romance (fade to black) to boot, as Nix and Ares get closer. The big scene stealer in this book would have to be Jeff, though they definitely meet some interesting and crazy characters throughout.
A thoroughly entertaining urban fantasy (with the added bonus of being part of a complete series) for the UF fan.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
After the ending in the last book I was really worried that we were coming to the end of one of my favourite series. Thankfully that wasn't the case and there is still more to come. I don't think I've ever been so conflicted about a series ending, I'm both sad and really excited.
In this book we learn more about who Drakon is, what he wants and his evil master plan! (insert Dr. Evil laugh here) We also get more Ares and Nix!!! I simply adore this couple and love seeing their relationship develop and grow (also that whole fated, connection thing...) Oh and the new addition to the family - so cute.
I don't know about anyone else but I am getting more and more intrigued about our Mad Max girls, and I know people have been asking Linsey if she'll continue on the series with a spin off with those girls are the star focus - I for one would be 100% behind that!
Slowly we learn more about Nix powers which continue to emerge just like her relationship with Ares. This time they face new challenges all leading up to the final battle with Drakon. Leading up to that battle new allies are formed and some wonderful surprises and of course plenty of action. These ladies and the past they have discovered has gotten us to this point. The final battle for Nix is coming soon and finding out exactly what the importance of Firesouls and Dragons is only another step.
I so needed this book today and enjoyed completely losing myself in it. I love what this author has done, the characters, the world, the execution. This is an amazing series and perfect for YA's since this author skillfully shows us you can have romance and love, action, suspense and fun and it can be enjoyed by all ages.
Outstanding continuation of Nix's story. Now I can't wait until the next book is out. Fantasy worlds and creatures both good and bad come to life in the pages of Ms. Hall's books. Each book has a HFN ending but must be read in sequence to appreciate these books. There are 3 women joined as sisters to fight evil both Cass and Del have finished their greatest challenges this book is about Nix who is the last to fulfill her role to save mankind and supernatural creatures. It's amazing the Norse history/lore brought forth and how the authors fantastic imagination when it came to developing mythical and new supernatural creatures. Nix has finally allowed Ares into her heart and home. I very much look forward to what I believe will be the 5th and final book in this fantastical series. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review.
I have been a huge fan of Ms. Hall’s since the first book I read by her. Her writing, her characterizations, her plots, just everything in general, are always top-notch. This book had all of this, which is just what I expect from her. I always feel that I’m right there with the characters, and, like I’ve stated before, Del is my favorite protagonist in the series. In this installment, members of her family are in peril and it’s up to her and her sisters to get them out. Of course, Drakon is the one behind it, and she needs to defeat this new wrinkle in their fight. If you are a fan of this series, you will love this new book. If you haven’t read this series, what are you waiting for?! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Another hit in this series. I love how Nix is growing. I also enjoyed seeing the girls from Death Valley Junction join this book. I think they would make a great spin off of this series to hear their tales as their past is quite the mystery. I am wondering if the last book will complete what the Triumviate was fated to do; or if another book or set of books will complete the tale. I love how the sisters have all found love. I'd like to see them be able to get more serious with the guys in their lives where they aren't so hesitant to be able to branch out and live in other worlds/realms because they will always have their shop. They have depended on each other for so many years, it's time to start "leaving the nest" so to speak.
"Enemy of Magic" is another journey in the life of the fire soul, Nix and her quest to battle the evil Drakon. I loved this series from the moment I first read the story of the first fire soul. However, I must be honest, it took me days to get through this read when it should only taken me a few hours because quite honestly, the series has turned formulaic: Focus on one sister, send her to foreign lands (in book after book) to battle magical creatures while flirting with a handsome man. That pretty much sums up the books. Once was fine and I could even handle it twice but now, it just seems repetitive times three. Also, the romance is just lukewarm! I will go on to read book five since it is the last book in the Protector series but no more after this!
Loved the book. The only criticism is that the plot and love story in every book pretty much the same. The threat is different and the story is being told from the perspective of another character. The fight scenes have a lot of the same content and same descriptions, example....lungs always burning and muscles aching. I just feel that maybe occasionally she could describe the fight with different wording so it at least feels like it’s not a repeat of the same scenes over and over. Regardless of my criticisms, I still can’t put the books down! Unfortunately, I’ve neglected my house keeping and other things I should be taking care of because of this. Can’t wait to start the new book!
A new facet to being a Firesoul is revealed and also more about the Vampire realm. Nix seems to be bearing the heaviest of fated burdens and privileges. Things get more intimate between Nix and Ares (yes! I was shipping them hard). Many more trials and tribulations are faced by the brave Triumvirate and their partners and friends. New alliances are made and old ones strengthen. Everyone plays a role in the battle which is won but the Great War has yet to come.
ARC provided by the author for voluntary review consideration.
Another amazing book from author Linsey Hall. In this book Nix learns more of what she needs to do to accomplish her task, to keep her family & friends safe. More and more clues come to the surface. Her pet dragon makes a few appearances plus other characters from previous books. This book takes it to the next level & leaves you wanting more. It's a must read. Come enjoy an amazing storyline & characters that come to life.
*I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this advance reader copy and was not compensated in any way.*
Linsey Hall did it again. This book is so good I hated for it to end. I'm am eagerly anticipating the finale in this epic series that will end up spanning 15 books, but I will truly hate for it to be over. Del, Cass and Nix and their significant males, will always have a special place in my heart.
This book has a lot of battles, but the biggest and baddest is in the end. I LOVE that Nix has a dragon! That she named him Jeff, is well weird, but somehow it fits. The last chapter left me feeling warm and fuzzy. Highly recommend this series.
If you haven't read any of the books in this series, you really should. This urban fantasy series from Linsey Hall just keeps getting better and better. Enemy of Magic had the thrilling plot I know I can expect in a book from this series. I love seeing the characters again because it's like meeting up with a group of my good friends. I even enjoy the villain in this book, because he just might be the most powerful one yet. There are a lot of hidden powers and surprises in this story, and I love when a book is full of good surprises. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
I'm a late-comer to this series, having not read it's prior books before this one, and that is a distinct disadvantage as I'm missing loads of backstory that readers are presumed to know. Despite that I found this book to be highly entertaining. The heroine is definitely the kind of kick-a** heroine I adore, her gang of supporters are well crafted and the world-building with its myriad of creatures is very well done indeed. Add in a well written plot that works very well and the result is a story that's very enjoyable and easy to recommend.
This story is so good I will re-read again and again! Jeff is going to be awesome as a familiar! The Lukas found away out of the vampire realm to help Nix! There are a few editing errors, but not enough to be a distraction. If you haven't Read Cass & Del's stories, at the very minimum, start wit h Nix's first book. A must to keep the flow! Another winner!
Just when Nix thinks that things are going to be alright another roadblock is thrown her way. A small dragon mysteriously appears to her and she has to figure out how. He seems to be her protector just like the Puki. As things heat up with Drakon she looks to her parents but is blocked by a strange mist encasing the whole village. Now she and her friends must face many hazardous tasks to find some answers. A thrill every word.
Loved the time in Norway! The mythology included was great, and the inclusion of historical buildings too. The battles with Drakon are fierce, and Nix's people strong in defense. I only have one thing bugging me. Considering the trials and battles these three have been through, and the power they each have had to learn to handle, Nix's continuing doubt in herself is getting a little old.
Drakon the ultimate bad guy is out to basically steal the world, why? because he can if Nix can't defeat him, but hey no pressure or anything right?
I love Nix's attitude some of the time lol whats a little self-doubt when you're trying to save the world, thank goodness she has Ares to believe in her, fall for her and basically want to save her all the time. ahhh what a guy.
This series is just one fantastical adventure after another and I love it.
This book is full of adventures and battles, from the vampire realm to Norway and beyond. Nix and Ares are spectacular, along with the rest of the crew. Bree and Ana appear in this book as well. I really enjoyed reading this book. It is well balanced, keeping the reader engaged but not overwhelmed. I really like the way Nix and Ares’ relationship develops in the midst of all that is going on and the way it is portrayed.
I had a break at around 75% into this book, which speaks volumes I would guess. It was OK - still too many things which 'shined' rather than shone and a couple of other editing issues, eg several repeated descriptions within a page or so of each other; like Jeff bing described as 'now being the size of a house cat' twice within 2 pages - real sloppy editing. I am going to get to the end of the series but it's beginning to feel like a chore.....
Hall does an amazing job with creative thinking and creating monsters/ Lord. I loved this part Story line is good but there are a few plot holes that don't make sense..Like why didn't they use comms during certain times etc. Very little actually physical romance in these books. Still a good read , but this is why I gave it 3 stars. Also at this point of eating so much cheese pretty sure Nix is constipated as hell. 🤣
