SENTINELS is a difficult book to review but one I've decided to heir on the side of optimism and state is great rather than bad. This is because it has one of those "Ned Stark, Red Redding" moments toward the end which strikes you as a kick in the stomach. These moments have to be handled carefully and can really turn a reader off the series. Here, I think Darius Brasher did it well but it did segue the series from a optimistic one to a much darker one. Either way, kudos to the author for making a bold choice.

The premise is Theodore Conley is a twenty year old superhero living on his own with his best friend Isaac in the rebuilt city of Baltimore (destroyed in an alien invasion--which most of the inhabitants I know would say couldn't have made it worse). Unfortunately, Theodore screws up royally and gets an innocent girl killed when he tries to go gung-ho and be a macho protector of an abused woman. Filled with shame, Theo hires the protagonist of the Superhero Detective series (also by Brasher) to track him down and ends up discovering why a superhero has been trying to kill him for years.

Much of this book feels like an advertisement for the Superhero Detective stories and I have to say it worked because Truman Lord is an incredibly fun character. Theodore and he play well off one another. There's a good amount of fun to be had where a guy who has been to another dimension is completely flumoxed at what goes on at a strip club. Honestly, I think Theodore got a bit too judgemental about the whole sex work business as a whole but that's really up to the reader to decide. I hope Cassandra shows up again, though, as she's an excellent character.

Sentinels finally resolves the plotline which has been simmering since the first novel as to who killed Theo's father, who has been attempting to kill him, and what they want. The answer was surprising, though runs into the "Chosen One" narrative that is always tricky to pull off. I felt the resolution was dark but well done, dealing with the wholesale upturning of the typical superhero narrative of blacj and white morality. I didn't buy the villain's argument one bit about why he did what he did but it had a certain Professor Zoom-esque logic.

The death of at least one major character occurs in this book and it's done in such a way that caused me to be really upset (as seen above). Was it the best use of that character/those characters? Were there no more stories to tell with them? Maybe, maybe not. Still, superhero fiction is different from superhero comics in the fact that change is possible and actions can have horrible consequences. This is also a series which is increasingly about Theodore growing up and shedding his previously idealistic worldview.

So, in short, yes this was a very good book.

Even better than the first 2 books

I'm gonna take Mr. Brasher's advice for a 2 word review and say "Loved it."
If you haven't read this series , you absolutely must. One of the best super hero series ever conceived. As a famously misspelled tattoo once declared, "No Ragrets."

May the fourth (book) be with me

And soon! Thanks Darius, for getting me back into enjoying reading, instead of just writing. This series is the first I've read since the last book in the Left Behind series came out. What year was that, like 1875? Can't wait to download #4!

Darius does it again

Man, his series of books always get better and better. Truly impressed. I will say it rather ironic that the main character complains about using three words when one would suffice, is the same way I feel about Theo's introspection. A little too much on the context not enough action. That is all that kept it from being 5 stars. You still rock, please keep it up Darius.

Just as good as I expected

I have had the pleasure of reading a good many of Mr. Brasher's books and had a high level of expectation. Mr. Brasher did not disappoint! I was also pleased to see the inclusion of another old friend in the novel. Well done sir. Well done. Worth the purchase. Worth the read.

An interesting read

This is the third book in this superhero series and it seemed to mature even as the hero in the story had to do the same. I would recommend all three books in the series to anyone who loves the superhero genre or just loves a good story. A story stands on it's telling and this story stands tall.

Full of delicious comic book flavor!

An entertaining superhero story with classic comic book flavor. Heroes, villains, betrayal and lots of humor. Hero/Detective Truman "The wonderful and much to modest" Lord shows up to lend a hand! It was difficult to write a review, since I didn't want to spoil anything.

Finishing this was a task. Brashers writing turned amateur-ish suddenly. Worst, was the use of the "Legend says" "Chosen one" "Excalibur" thropes. Jesus christ. Some free advice here; In the future, if you don't know if a joke is funny or not, assume it isn't, just delete it. Don't go along hoping for the best. Damn this was disappointing.

Great job!

Excellent novel, as always! Very satisfying ending, though also sad (can't say more without spoilers). Have to admit I'm feeling a bit frustrated because I have to wait a while to see what happens next!

Highly entertaining take on super hero genre

Only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. Bright kindle light in a sea of kindle mediocrity. Engaging characters, excellent world building, interesting plot. Well done, highly recommend the whole series.

I feel torn. On one hand, there was some really nice character growth here. The one-liners were as great as the other books. And we got some answers to some big questions.

And Truman. He was freaking awesome. Love that guy.

But there was so much telling! So much exposition! Paragraphs and paragraphs of Theo going over the same things while the plot hangs out in the background, forgotten. It felt like most of the action didn't happen until the sixty percent mark, which got a little boring.

Even the romance was problematic.

The book opens with Theo and Neha broken up. Okay, fine. Confusing considering that they were tight in the last book, but whatever. But we don't get to experience the breakup. (Hell, we don't even get to experience much of the relationship, so I'm not surprised.) But we're TOLD about it (see the trend here?), and it becomes a plot point. When we finally do get to see what happens between them, it comes right before Neha dies.

Sigh.

I wasn't a huge fan of her to begin with. But between her semi-callous way of breaking up with Theo (if it can be called that), the lack of seeing the relationship develop before it went kaput, and the doubts I already had that Theo truly loved her (because we never saw it, only heard about it), I was never emotionally invested in this particular storyline. Now, she gets killed while Theo is rescuing her? Great. If this was supposed to get me to care, it didn't work.

I'm harping on these things because this is such a unique world (well, except for the Independence Day ripoff; that wasn't unique). The idea is solid, but the execution is holding it back from being outstanding.

this is a dumpster fire

So, this book starts with our hero in a ski mask breaking into someone's house to intimidate and force them to be a better person. We then follow that abhorrent action with 15 pages of introspective rambling-thoughts that bear no purpose in forwarding the plot. Other than the snarky constant nonstop quips, this is no superhero story. The world makes no sense and is lazily constructed. There is magic, aliens, reincarnation, and marvel and dc comics in this world, yet the author tries to convince us that our normal is the same as the story's normal. Furthermore the author is totally out of control. I can tell the editor didn't even read thorough the manuscript because Brasher goes on these insane rants about criminals, good and evil, and how nothing matters. It immediately pulls you out of the story and destroys all the goodwill built up in the previous entries. The book seems to be a way for the author to vent his frustrations from his years of work in law, and his cynical view of the justice system and its propensity to further the wills of the rich and powerful. Sigh, avoid this book. The mystery isn't worth it, there is barely any plot, and it devolves into nonsense 2/3rds the way through.

Ugh, some more of the same exaggerated self-absorbed focus. Not sure why the author thinks it's a good idea to provide such an abundance of intimate details without bothering to give it a bit more passion. Theo is a selfish, petulant tool whose mind is permanently residing in his underwear again, only more so, to the point where I was tempted to DNF.

Some really poor writing, too, including lousy grammar, missing words, and too many similes. In the space of 94 words, 6 similes were used, which is just plain laziness on the part of the writer.

Nevertheless, I limped to the finish line with this one, but I won't be completing the series

Gripping Read

Theo is bummed. He told his girlfriend that he loved her, but she didn't reciprocate. He feels guilt over the death of family and friends. How will he continue? Well, stuff happens quickly, and he plunges into what needs to be done. I like the action, humor, and romance, including the pent up lust of a hormonal young man. Losing a loved one makes me feel his emotional pain. Where is a time traveling hero when you need one? I look forward to the next book.

The Omega superhero series was on a great path with likable characters, real challenges, interesting back story and good dialogue. Sentinels takes a sharp backwards turn, adding in a fun new character but also a smutty scene in a strip club and The Chosen One theme.

Another excellent superhero fiction by Darius Brasher. In this book the series goes in some unexpected but awesome directions. We see the hero become a bit darker and have t make some hard choices. The overall story will keep you turning the pages and the action is non-stop. If you like superhero fiction, you'll love this series.

Witty banter is no substitute for story.

I did not like how the last book ended, and this one is a monument to that one mistake. Of the trio introduced in book one, the best one was benched this whole book, another poor choice. This whole thing is going for a certain tone, trying to lead the story in a very specific direction. It was done at the cost of the quality of the book.

Story gets an edge

This book was nearly a 5 star review. The only reason I didn't give it that was the author kept talking about a blow up between friends and didn't show it till Ness the end

This series gets better and better with each book. I really appreciate the dry humor in them and the story just keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait to read the next one.

It is so appropriate that Theo spent his last few minutes with Smoke taunting her for stupid reasons before accidentally killing her.

Addicted to this series. I'm not a professional critic or an amateur one for that matter. So I will leave it at that. On to the next book.

Theo Conley is unstoppable! I loved the ending and thought everyone got their just desserts. Theo as the Omega feels like a cheat code now.
