1943, Germany.

Martin Murray, a homosexual man in the Office of Strategic Services—an American espionage agency during World War II—desperately tries to save the world while hiding his sexuality from it.

Emmerich Hubar, a former SS Officer who had been on trial for being a homosexual—the verdict not guilty by a stroke of luck—struggles with his grief as he tries to drink himself to death in Sweden.

Agent Martin Murray just wants to be a patriot and do his job right. The OSS wants him to use the German named Emmerich Hubar to gain access into the Nazi military and prevent them from building nuclear weapons. A dangerous and trying task, but one worth doing if it prevents the Nazis from destroying the planet.
But Emmerich Hubar isn’t just some depressed drunk who wants to run away from his past. He’s a passionate, brave soul with a bleeding heart and the thirst to destroy the government that nearly destroyed him.

Danger lurks around every corner—even from Martin’s own allies—and it doesn’t help matters as he grows more and more enticed by Emmerich, an asset he needs to keep his distance from to protect their cover. Emmerich, a wild card, plays by different methods, indifferent to whether he gets captured and killed.
He’s not the kind of man to fall in love with, not in that country and not at that time. And yet, as Emmerich gets deeper and deeper beneath Martin’s skin, Martin’s sense of self-perseveration wars with a need he never realized he had: a need to be known and loved.

This book was heartbreaking for me to read. It always had bothered me the way society, as well as, any society in any most countries; hated gay men and society felt the need to punish them for it. Even in the time of war.

The story is set in 1943, Germany. A gay man by the name of Emmerich Hubar was a former SS Officer who went on trial for being gay. With incredible luck the man was found not guilty, but still had a dishonorable discharge with the stamp of being gay.

What recourse did these men have once everything in their life was taken away and had no place where people wanted them around? Well that’s exactly where Emmerich Hubar was and all he wanted to do was drink him to death. He hated his country. He hated the people around him.

Emmerich’s feelings about his countries betrayal to him were perfect for the American espionage agency during World War II. Agent Martin Murray, a homosexual too, wanted to be a patriot to his country and would do what was needed to protect it.

It was Martin’s job to recruit Emmerich to help prevent the Germans in building nuclear weapons.
Of course Martin had his hands full with just keeping Emmerich sober and the man was not a willing participate in the mission even though he had agreed to help Martin. These two men go back and forth about the value of the mission with Emmerich not giving a damn if it failed which frustrated Martin to death.

Martin also had a cover. He was to married General Achter’s daughter, Auta Achter. She was just as against the nuclear weapons, but she also found out what an evil man her father was.

All three of these people would get into dangerous situations that Martin would have to quickly come up with a fix. But Emmerich by far was the most difficult to handle. Martin had stood up to the man many times to threaten him with his authority and stood tall so that his height railed over Emmerich to frighten the man. I never really worked.

Slowly Martin started to have feelings for Emmerich and he would worry when the man didn’t return to his apartment on time thinking something went wrong. Then after one more heated bout with Emmerich on the phone, Martin angrily hung up and went downstairs to Emmerich apartment. Once there he didn’t know what he was going to do and being so overwhelmed gave up and slide down the front door as he leaned against it.

That night Emmerich guessed Martin’s sexual preference and confronting Martin broken down his walls that he hid behind for safety. It was the night he received his first kiss. He had never been with a man and Emmerich was more than happy to show Martin’s the wonderful pleasures that lay ahead.

The two men continued on with the mission and their lovemaking which made both men happy. And then one morning when Martin fell asleep with Emmerich, Auta caught them in Emmerich’s room compromised. She wanted to report them. They were disgusting in her eyes. Auta agreed she had to keep up the front that she was already married to Martin and that they were planning a wedding for her parent’s sake. It was a daunting task, but allowed Martin to search for more information.

Emmerich was bringing in more Intel as time went by. Then the day of the wedding things started to fall apart and Emmerich and Martin were caught in the General’s office with papers. Emmerich’s General went to shoot Emmerich only to be shot dead himself.

The whole mission was a failure at that point even though Emmerich had grabbed some papers. In a vehicle the two raced around town with the military after them getting closer then would fall back.
Emmerich insisted that they needed to warn Dr. Werner’s family. In doing so the man’s family made it to safety but Dr. Werner was not so lucky and for double crossing the Germans about the way to build nuclear weapons, Dr. Werner was killed.

Now that Emmerich and Martin had confirmed that Dr. Werner was shot dead, the two of them had to escape the German’s that were all over the university campus. The intense escape kept me on the edge of my seat and I wondered how these two men could ever have a life together. Martin was wanted by his own government now with the failed mission as well as the Germans and Emmerich was in the same position – they would have to go into hiding.

I loved the way Max Hudson concluded the story about these two brave men and it was perfect. It was sad about Martin not being able to contact his family, but he was very happy with his life with Emmerich. The book is well written and kept me wanting to find out more. It is a book that I would recommend, especially for those who love that time period.

This was a dark and intense story written in the time of WWII in Germany where Martin, an American spy, must gather his helpers and set out to
save the world. Sent on a special mission to stop the Nazi from developing nuclear weapons and using them to win the war. He is sent to recruit Emmerich, a disgraced German SS officer who barely escapes death after he was accused of homosexuality. Willing to aide in the downfall of the Nazi, but consumed with the taste of alcohol, Martin has his hands full with him. Auta is a daughter of a German general and is on the allies side. The three work together to reach their goal. Treachery...from both sides, danger, murder, trust, moral versus heart decisions, hot sex, love and extreme homophobia sets a pace that follows a dark and dangerous path. I needed a little sunshine after I read the story. The ending of the story is an HFN. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC story.

In this story Max covers the difficult topic of espionage during WW2 in Nazi Germany and the way homosexual men were treated during that era. Our hero Martin is trying to gain information about the Nazi's by befriending Emmerich Hubar but along the way they fall in love. Being homosexual was a criminal offence during this period and men were treated appallingly.
This is a very emotive topic and not an easy read but Max has dealt with the subject very sympathetically.

I found this very interesting. Max is back in the past with Martin and Emmerich. This has a bit of everything love, romance, thriller, spy and great setting. Two men on opposite sides work together to prevent a greater evil. I liked the setting and I loved the characters. I think that the story was well written. I enjoyed it a lot.
I received this as an ARC.
