I first read this book when I was about 10 years old.

I am amazed that this book is not more well-known. It is very well written and interesting.

It is about Chief Mangas Coloradas and his life among the Apache Indians just as the white men (not the Mexicans, they came earlier) are beginning to appear.

I would say that it is at the 6th grade reading level.

For anyone who is interested in a good juvenile book about Chief Mangas Coloradas or the American Indians (Apache), this would be a very good book. (less)
