Sam Hayward's parents think he has a boyfriend. And he does... in his dreams. But when they insist Sam bring his partner to the annual Labor Day family reunion, his options are to either admit it was all a lie or find a stand-in in a hurry. The trouble is that his lies have all been based on one very real man.

Ben Matheny has been hurt before. When he's bribed into playing a part by his friends, he fleshes out Sam's dreams, but it's like flying too close to the sun. He's always had a crush on Sam, and now they're going to the Hamptons to spend a weekend pretending they're lovers, everything is getting harder.

When Ben uncovers another lie Sam has told - that Ben is every bit as rich as Sam is - things begin to unravel. If Sam isn't happy with who Ben is, Ben can't stick around to get burned again.

With their hearts on the line, the two must fight for their dreams as the pressure mounts. It would be so easy to admit that it was all a sham, but some dreams are worth the risk.

I had to stop. Too juvenile for men in their early 20's "Do you think he likes me?" and convoluted circumstances over what is considered a lie or a LIE. "I can't believe you LIED about this!" when the entire premise of the story is lying to Sam's family about having a boyfriend. I just couldn't go there any more.

No rating since I didn't finish.

Even though it's relatively slow-burn, and there's that lovely and sweetly frustrating fact of "mutual pining", this one was low-to-nonexistent angst. And boy I needed something like that!

Even though I would have preferred it if it was low on the sex (I wouldn't have minded-more, I would have welcomed- if there wasn't actually any on-page sex at all), it was still fairly enjoyable. I can also appreciate the fact that the evolution of the characters' relationship happened at the pace it did- it was just nice, just right.

The conflict did seem a bit childish for the ages of the characters, but I guess it still makes sense given the circumstances, so I'm not complaining big about it.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by this author!

Okay, so this is another new to me author and I will be going back and finding more of her books! She mentions in her acknowledgements that writing contemporary books was stepping out of her comfort zone, she does it flawlessly!

Sam Hayward works in the Press Room, a coffee house even though he comes from a very wealthy family. A family he has been lying to and telling he has a boyfriend. Sam's family is accepting of him, they're just not very close. Although the does have a special relationship with his Grandma. Sam has invented an imaginary boyfriend to keep his family off his back, an imaginary boyfriend that sounds exactly like Ben Mayheny.....his crush. That's been working until his mother demands he bring home his "boyfriend" for their family party.

Ben is a local photographer and a regular at the Press Room, especially when Sam is working. Ben is one of 7 children from a working class family and has been making his own way in the world since he turned 18. Pete and Faith, two of Sam's coworkers, convince Ben to go home with Sam to play the role of his imaginary boyfriend for his parents Labor Day weekend party. Ben and Sam are friends, neither know the other has a crush on each other. They spend some time practicing "boyfriend" answers. What could go wrong? Ben knows Sam is lying to his family about their relationship, but he is thrown for a surprise by another one of Sam's lies and he's hurt by it. He's not sure if he and Sam can ever really have anything more than something fake.

I loved these characters and the Press Room! These were quirky, fun people that you could see yourself being friends with. The Press Room was a place you would want to hang out and have coffee. The author wrote such likable characters, I wanted Ben and Sam together from the first few pages. Even in the ups and downs, you root for each of them both individually and as a couple.
I hope the author will dip back into the contemporary pool again.

Sam has a huge problem. Not only does he have a crush on one of his customers, Ben, but he has also lied to his family and told them that Ben is his boyfriend, so they'll stop hounding him about getting a boyfriend and settling down. Now his family expects Sam to bring Ben to the Hamptons with him for their annual Labor Day reunion. Sam's friends/co-worker's convince Ben, who unbeknownst to Sam reciprocates his feelings, to go with Sam and pretend to be his boyfriend. While there, the two men finally discover they have feelings for one another and act on them, but Sam has not only lied about Ben being his boyfriend, he has also overindulged in his description of Ben's wealth and professional success to impress his family. Can Sam make it through the long weekend without everything blowing up in his face?

This was a cute, if a bit predictable read. I really liked both Ben and Sam, although I really wanted to knock their heads together at times. They were both so oblivious to what was happening around them it wasn't even funny. I know Sam escaped his family and their value of money that he didn't agree with, but I really liked his family. If it was the author's intent to have Sam's family come off as feeling like people with less money and stature are beneath them, as Sam insinuated throughout the story, she failed. They actually came off as quite friendly and caring.

While I liked Sam and Ben, I found their reactions to certain situations to be a bit over the top. I also thought that Ben's reaction to Sam's family having money was a bit immature and it made little sense. It made him seem petty and he almost had a reverse prejudice to the fact that Sam's family had money.

Sam and Ben had a good chemistry and the sex was steamy, as well as passionate and sweet. I really thought they fit well together and enjoyed their story. The progression of their relationship from friends to lovers was natural and well-paced. This was a sweet and enjoyable read with just a hint of angst, that I'd recommend!

I'm super late with this review - my apologies to the author.

This book uses the fake-boyfriend trope, in which the fake boyfriend eventually turns into a real boyfriend.

Sam has been lying to his parents about having a boyfriend - and it's even worse, because the man Sam pretends to be his actually exists, even though Sam has created a whole persona that is based on lies. And now Sam's parents insist that Sam bring his boyfriend to the annual Labor Day family reunion.

Ben is a struggling photographer and the man featuring prominently in Sam's desires. And Sam's lies. He reluctantly agrees to accompany Sam to the family reunion after being bribed into it. I say reluctantly because even though Ben is half in love with Sam too, he always thought him way out of his league.

Because Sam has money and Ben does not.

Sam works because he wants to. Ben works because he needs to.

Ben is a bit wary at first, especially since there's someone in his past who hurt him badly, by making him feel that he wasn't good enough.

I liked Ben, and I liked most of Sam's family (his grandma especially), but I didn't really like Sam all that much. He comes across as a spoiled brat on occasion, and he sounded younger than his actual years a few times.

Of course, as expected, Sam's lies begin to unravel over their weekend in the Hamptons, and he hurts Ben badly when the truth comes out. Inevitably, they make up and get their happy ending, because, after all, this is a romance novel.

It's a sweet story, with a well-used trope, and while it ends on a good note, I had reservations about Sam's maturity level and his reasons for lying - he made out his family to be so much worse than they actually were.

This is the kind of story that you read when you need something fluffy with little angst.

Sam is annoying. That’s not a bad thing, strangely enough. You can want to shake someone and still think they’re a decent character… and yes, I wanted to shake Sam a few times. Sam can brush off money when he’s living off a trust fund, able to take a job just because he likes it, drives a new car, has a nice apartment, and knows that he’ll never really want for anything. He seems to view his family wealth as some great burden, but… it’s a joke with no punchline. Sam’s family seems decent enough, for the little we see of them, and while Sam’s behavior towards them hints at a backstory, it isn’t reflected by anyone else save for a few token mentions of his sister’s husband, Matias, not being welcomed with open arms. Sam hints that it might have had to do with his lack of riches and wealth, but we have to keep in mind that Sam is a very unreliable and heavily biased narrator.

Ben is in a similar situation, viewing Sam’s family — and Sam — through rose colored glasses. He’s had a crush on Sam, is intimidated by the family mansion, but is taken by Sam’s grandmother, nieces, nephews… pretty much the whole family. His own issues come to a head, though, when he confesses to Sam that one of his past lovers tried to ‘improve him.’ To fix what was wrong with him by elevating his conversation, changing how he dressed, and treating Ben more like a pet than a person. When he learns that Sam built this mystery boyfriend on him, he’s flattered and a little uncertain, and when it comes out that Sam’s imaginary Ben is not only famous but rich, it hits Ben in a very tender spot and he makes it clear to Sam that he’s done playing and wants to go home. Now.

Exposure ticks a lot of boxes of tropes I like to read about - friends to lovers, pretend boyfriends, assumed unrequited feelings, rich boy/poor boy. All fit together nicely to make a highly enjoyable story.
I was instantly drawn to the MCs and wanted to see what path they were going to go down. They were extremely relatable. Most of us have been in Ben's shoes and been desperate for a way to get closer to and spend time with a crush. And although most of us aren't super rich like Sam we can understand sometimes feeling out of place even within our families. Author does a good job of not making Sam into a poor little rich boy character. I totally saw where Sam was coming from but I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the page examples of his difficulties with his parents, the things that lead him to be estranged from his family and the issues they've had. Just in order to fully appreciate why he did what he did, so I won't want to kick his arse for hurting Ben.

This is the author's first time writing contemporary MM. It was really well written and an enjoyable read. Look forward to seeing what Aly comes up with next.

I was really excited about this book. I was so hopeful for these men, the premise, and overcoming misunderstandings and untruths. The reality, however, wasn't as awesome as I hoped. Overall, though, the book was enjoyable. It had feels, groveling, family, quirkiness, passion, and confessions. All the makings of a delightful read.

So why did it not meet my expectations? It was small things, really, and not even enough to base a full rant on. I can honestly understand the hurt caused by lies. I know that Sam was wrong to say what he did, but I never doubted his heart. I feel like Ben was blind to that heart because of a dick for an ex. Yes, that's absolutely valid. But did it excuse Ben from making an awkward and hurtful situation worse? No. I'm not a fan of how he reacted. Sam knew what he did was wrong and knew he only made things worse by not coming clean early on, but who could blame him? He was constantly made to feel less-than by his parents and wanted to make them at least a little proud of him since his lifestyle wasn't something they understood or approved of. They might have meant well, but the way they went about things was upsetting to say the least. He padded the boyfriend brief because he wanted them to be satisfied and also to pave the way for them to like the not-so fictional boyfriend. Those intentions were a bit cowardly but also honest from a hurt little boy's perspective. It doesn't make it right, but it does make it understandable and not a little sad.

Why couldn't Ben look beyond that to see what Sam's intentions were, to see the truth beyond the words said to parents long before the weekend ever came around? Ben was pig-headed and frustrating because he hurt Sam worse than the lie could have hurt Ben. He also got so many people on his side to hurt Sam even further. A place that was a home, a haven for Sam became a place of derision and insults. He deserved some of what he got, but not everything they dished out on him.

The way that Sam groveled was really the best. He was honest and his words were heartfelt. There was no way to misunderstand his apology and he really tried his best. That best was pretty much trampled on by Ben and Peter, but his heart was so visible, so vulnerable. He eventually got his point across, though, and Ben's acceptance, though grudging at the start, was complete and open by the end.

These two men came from very, very different backgrounds and have a hard road ahead when they have to deal with those differences but their determination to make things work is commendable. I have great hopes for them because I know how much they want each other, that they are also committed to being honest. It helps that Sam's family is warmer to Ben and Sam after all the frustration that was caused by Sam's exaggeration of circumstances. I'm also glad that Sam had people like his grandma and his brother-in-law on his side to love him, accept him, and to give him the kick he needs to be better. Everyone needs support like that and as Ben and Sam make their way together that support will continue and help them grow into what they have every potential to become.

Exposed was graciously provided to me by Gay Book Promotions for an honest review.

"You're Nose will Grow, Pinocchio.."

I think it's pretty safe to assume that every child, at one time or another, was told something of the ill affects of lying. Whether it be a complete or little white one, they weren't recommended. Despite these recommendations, some have still felt the need to slip in a lie for one reason or another. As in the case of one of the mc's from the most recent book I have read. Exposed, which does have a very unique double entendre, is a story, at first glance, about the after affects of one such lie. Well..it does..to an extent. I found that much of this extremely slow-paced storyline to actually be about two young men, Sam and Ben, and how they tip toed around one another, due to various reasons, while debating whether or not each should approach the other. As feelings of self-doubt, second-guessing, wonderment, and denial, were prevalent throughout much of the story, a lie was then formed.

I liked the hidden inner concept of this book, that, regardless of one's upbringing, follow one's heart. I've seen this in other books as well, and, have consistently felt the same way. And, I doubt that will ever change. As the men, from Exposed, by Aly Hayden, continued with their budding friendship, many friends and family members, some more polite than others, questioned its existence. As it was absolutely exhausting for even this reader to have to read about these kinds of trying interactions, I was not surprised that for the two mc's, as a result of the intermingling of others, the relationship had indeed developed along with the aforementioned lie, but, as almost like a tag-along with its repercussions in the end. I enjoyed reading about Sam and Ben and their welcomed times together, especially when out in nature as well as with a certain sweet youngster. And, I was also glad Sam and Ben had ultimately found one another, however..found it difficult to make that strong connection, as a whole, even though there were many teary-eyed as well as hot and sexy moments. And, I really wanted that strong, melting kind of connection, but, for some reason(s) it wasn't found.

As this particular book is a part of the, Drawn Together series, even though the plot, was unclear at times, and seemed to be buried amongst the excessive and often repetitive, inner dialogue, and, I had wished there was more character background as well as more of a development with their families, as well as another run through the editing process, when the mc's finally got together, and actually started talking about their feelings, while at times a tad unrealistic, I really was happy for them. :)

Sam is a barista who has a very strained relationship with his family. When a lie told to get his parents off his back comes back to haunt him, he does the unthinkable and brings a pretend boyfriend, Ben, to the family reunion. The problem? The boyfriend he made up for his parents was actually based on Ben, who Sam has an enormous crush on. When it turns out that the parents are also rich, as in RICH, things get very uncomfortable for Ben.

I liked getting the family dynamics as Sam and Ben navigate their way through the weekend and I liked the back and forth, does he or doesn’t he, can it be real or not, vibe. However, at times I just wanted them to ASK HIM ALREADY! Sam doesn’t care that Ben doesn’t have money and that he’s a struggling photographer and Ben is just so happy about that. As the two get closer, they bond in a lovely way – over being themselves.

Of course, Sam’s lies have to come back to bite him and so one big one does. It is made particularly bad since Ben has a similar experience in his past that makes it so bad for him. I had some questions when I finished, such as I didn’t understand the animosity Sam had for his family, who definitely weren’t perfect but didn’t seem nearly the way he portrayed them. I have to say, I felt the blurb tells too much of the story but I did like it. This is a very angst-free story with sweet characters. This was my first book by this author and I will be trying another one.

Never tell a lie. They will come back to you and sometimes in the worst way. So, I am not going to lie. This book is great. It is well written with a steady pace. I read it in one sitting.
Sam and Ben have been hovering around each other for months, both too afraid to ask the other on a date. When Sam needs to come to a family party with his boyfriend he has to own up to his lies and asks Ben to join him. Although they know each other for a long time they don’t really know each other that well. A weekend in the Hamptons change that for the better and for the worse.
On the one hand, it is a slow-burn love story considering the time they know each other. On the other hand, the clients to friends to lovers evolve quickly on their first weekend together. It is written in a really convincing way without it being forced or unnatural.
The author created real and authentic characters. Sam and Ben come from different stations in life and that is what this book all about. What is normal for one is not for the other and how to make the other understand what you mean. Not everything is always what you think it is and might surprise you. Their feelings and interpretations are masterfully written. It is not always easy to forgive and forget but it is the stronger man who can do that.
I truly liked this book and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

The relationship between Ben and Sam is a slow burn. Although they are friends, somewhat, they are both hesitant to tell the other about the attraction they feel because they are afraid of ruining their friendship and honestly, because neither of them want to get hurt again.

Sam conjures up a fake boyfriend to appease his family. He based on the real man, Ben, he has a crush on since they'd met the year before, and while he thought that he could keep his crush to himself, the lie came back to bite him in the ass. Due to some finagling, Ben agrees to pose as Sam's boyfriend during Sam's family's get-together for the Labor Day weekend. Sam is worried that his secrets will be exposed, but at the same time, he's falling harder and harder for Ben.

Having Ben and Sam truly get to know one another was fantastic. They learned about what made the other hesitant, but it also deepened their feelings for one another. But almost as soon as they admitted their feelings, it all fell apart.

I couldn't finish the book fast enough because I wanted Sam and Ben to have their HEA. I don't want to give anything about this book away, but it is sweet with a little heartbreak and a wonderful ending that I absolutely loved!

Exposure is the story of two friends - Sam who manages a coffee shop and Ben who is a regular customer there - who are both totally into each other and so right for each other, but neither has worked up the courage to ask the other out! Throw in silly lie that Sam tells his family and a couple of interfering secondary characters, and Sam and Ben end up heading to the Hamptons to see Sam's family, where Ben is to pose as Sam's boyfriend. I loved the premise!!

This was a lovely story - such a nice, easy read. There was a bit of drama towards the end but it resolved itself fairly quickly and wasn't too over the top, and the romance was sweet. It was a slow burn, which I liked, and the connection and back and forth between Sam and Ben was wonderful. The "I love you" part felt quick for me, but I guess they had known each other for quite some time and had been friends for many months. I also shouted at my Kindle "just bloody tell him you like him!" about ten millions times haha!

I would recommend this one if you're looking for light and fluffy, and don't mind a bit of back and forth of "does he like me or not?" It's a quick read, perfect for an evening or a few quiet hours :)

Lies, no matter the reason always finds a way to come back and bite you. The more important the reasons for your lie the bigger that bite will be. Sam finds this out and it could cost him the love of Ben.

Sam works at The Press Room as the manager. Every day for months now Ben has coming in and orders the same thing. And Sam has been crushing on Ben for just as long. Unknow to Sam, Ben has been crushing right back.

When Sam’s family starts to pressure him about a boyfriend he makes up on using Ben as the model. And maybe, okay he did embellish some, making his boyfriend rich and well known. What’s it going to hurt? Nobody is ever going to know. Except now his family has requested (ordered) Sam to bring the boyfriend to the annual family gathering for Labor Day. Through shenanigans of co-workers, Ben is talked into posing as Sam’s boyfriend for the weekend. While they are there things between them change.

I don’t want to say much more because of spoilers. But I encourage you to read this book. It is a sweet, warm and easy to read story. The writing is great and pacing of the story is well done. The characters are wonderful and real.

“Exposure” by Aly Hayden is a m/m contemporary romance featuring photographer Ben Metheny and coffee café manager Sam Hayward. The two men have been dancing around their mutual attraction for months, but the unlikely arrangement that catalyzes the start of a romantic relationship is based on a lie…and Ben hates lies after his experience with his ex. Sam strives to find a way to restore Ben’s faith, but some things may be impossible to forgive.

I enjoyed the slow burn between these two shy guys who have struggled to be accepted for who they are. Despite coming from very different backgrounds, they search for middle ground while trying to overcome the scars inflicted by those they had trusted. The author did a great job of creating personable characters and a believable conflict, and although there was a sense of the inevitable crash and burn looming, I still was invested in the story. I wasn’t quite sure I saw all of the issues with Sam’s parents and I would have liked to see Ben’s family, but I was happy to have read this story and would definitely look for other works by this author.

Exposure is the first book in Aly Hayden's Drawn Together series. It is a fun and wonderful fake boyfriend romance.

Ben and Sam become fake boyfriends to fool Sam's family, as Sam needs them to stop pressuring him to date. Both men have liked each other, but never told the other.

During their time together, they have to deal with their families being completely opposite in personality, as well as lifestyle and wealth.

One of my favorite moments is Ben in the swim trunks! Omg. Loved it.

Their journey is full of fear of rejection, hesitancy, courage, making changes, and bravery, in addition to lies and deceptions. Their story is interesting, flirty, and completely entertaining.

I am happy to have discovered Exposure and will be reading Aly's other books!

This is why I read romances. Ben and Sam are a wonderful pair. You've got the stuff that a great romance needs. Nervous and fearful of ruining a friendship, a lot of miscommunication, sweet touching moments, and steamy sexy times. If you're looking for a sweet romance with some angst and some tears, this is the book for you. I have to say Ben is my favorite. I was given the privilege and opportunity to receive an advanced reader copy and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Fake boyfriends.

The fake boyfriend trope never fails to entertain . This one had recipe for disaster written all over it. The lies Sam had created to get his family to stop nagging him spectacularly blew up in his face. What started off as fake, turned into reality, and with the discovery of the extent of the lies, it left Ben angry and hurt. Sam realized that he would have to seriously prove himself to get Ben back. I loved it. Looking forward to next one.

There were parts that I enjoyed, but others I just couldn't get on board with.

I really liked Ben. He was sweet, but this totally had the whole Junior High vibe going on at times. "Do you like me? Check Yes or No"

Loved Sam's grandma! She's the reason for the extra 3rd star.

Cute

This is a sweet story about fear, family and love. I enjoyed the progression from friendship to romance and even the separation, hurt and anger. I like when characters aren't being perfect, but still redeem themselves.

Definitely so angsty feels

There is so much I want to say, but then again-spoilers are no fun. I enjoyed the angst and the gambit of emotions given. The plot and cast of characters were likable and made the book an enjoyable read. Definitely a book worthy of a reread.
