Bianca: The Brave Frail and Delicate Princess

Rate this book
Princess Bianca had never set foot outside the castle walls. Not once in her over-protected, pink, fluffy life. But when a dragon was spotted in the land and fear spread that the monster had conquered the king and his brave knights, Bianca realized that it was her duty to protect her kingdom. She will have to prove that she can be braver and stronger than anyone believed because the threat outside the protection of her castle tower was more dangerous and magical than she ever imagined possible, except in a fairy tale.

Princess Bianca had lived all her royal life within the Kingdom of Pacifico. Her mother, Queen Ariana the Kind, had not survived giving birth to Bianca, and she was very poorly at birth too. Her father, King Dominic, couldn’t lose his daughter as well as his wife, so he had nurse look after her, but once she was better, they still stayed. Now thirteen years later her father still felt she was too frail and fragile to leave the castle.

Bianca had a tutor to school her. She was never allowed to play or meet with other children, in case they carried diseases, and she had never been outside of the castle walls. She felt like a prisoner, whilst her father thought he was protecting her from harm.

One day whilst eavesdropping on her fathers council meeting, she learnt that the kingdom was in danger. A fire-breathing dragon had been spotted nearby and he was going to fight it. King Dominic gathered his bravest knights and set off in search of the dragon to slay it and protect the people of Pacifico. Three weeks after her father had ridden off to slay the dragon he still hadn’t come home. There was only one thing for it.

Princess Bianca would show everyone that she wasn’t weak and frail, she was going to let them see just how brave she was by going to find the dragon, and her father, alone.

Bianca is a very sweet children’s story. She is a lovely little girl, fed up of being wrapped in cotton wool and treated like she might fall apart at a moments notice.

The villagers loved her, but she only ever saw them from her window and she wished there was more to her life, she wasn’t living, she was existing.

I love how the book naturally flows and hooks you into the plot. The story is engaging and makes you want to keep reading, eager to find out just what will happen next. It felt like I was reading a fairy-tale.

Children of all ages will enjoy meeting Princess Bianca, from little children who can listen in awe, to older children who can read it for themselves. A very delightful book that I can see being a big hit with the kids.

The cute cover lured me in and I was thoroughly entertained by Bianca by Meg Welch Dendler. It may be recommended for ages 3+ and up, but I think everyone will fall in love with the characters that come into Bianca’s life. I know I did.

Bianca is a thirteen year old princess considered so frail by her father, King Dominic, she ias kept isolated in the castle, not allowed to go outside, let alone play with any of the town children. Her highlight of the day was her subjects amassing below the castle tower window, cheering and waving at her.

No one knew, but she entertained herself, running and playing on the stairs, sword slashing at imaginary foes, and lots and lots of reading. Don’t we all get lost in stories?

No one expects her to do anything but be pretty, don’t worry about anything, and eventually get married to her chosen mate. But when her father and the knights never return from the hunt for the dragon, she makes up her mind it is her duty, as the princess, to find them.

She sets off with Sammy, the donkey. Imagine never doing anything for yourself, never having been outside, never feeling the sun on your face, the grass beneath your feet, the dust in your nose. The stories never prepare you for ‘real life’, but Bianca has no fear. She will figure it out, whether it’s finding shelter or cooking her own meal. A very determined young lady that any child would love to emulate.

She meets a witch, fairies, a magical cat, a dragon, a wolf and other animals that hang in the forest. I worried for her…a little…but she had magical help from the animals around her and I knew they were looking out for her. And the dragon…Well, you will have to read for yourself to find out with him.

If you are looking for a children’s book that will give yourself and your little ones hours of reading pleasure, look not further. This is it. I couldn’t stop reading it once I started and it took me under four hours to finish it. I debated on the rating because I love heavy and dark reading, but this is a children’s story that I loved and think ‘children’ of all ages will too. A well deserved four stars.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Bianca: The Brave Frail and Delicate Princess by Meg Welch Dendler.

Thirteen year old Princess Bianca has led a sheltered life. “Her father, King Dominic, loved her to the point of smothering.” She is tutored and cared for by a bevy of servants who won’t allow her to lift a finger. The queen, Ariana the Fair, had died giving birth to the princess and the court doctors had decreed Bianca a frail and delicate baby who might succumb at any moment. But Bianca has defied the odd and grown into a beautiful and healthy teen-ager. She is kept in her tower room to avoid her exposure to germs and illnesses. She isn’t even allowed a pet although she would dearly love a dog.

To put it bluntly, Bianca is bored with her life. She seeks adventure and almost anything out of the ordinary piques her curiosity. Until the day a dragon threatens the kingdom and the king with his knights sets off to battle the fierce creature. When the war party fails to return Biance assumes control and sets off on her own to save her father and his knights. She takes with her only a few meager supplies and Sammy the opinionated donkey to save the kingdom.

Meg Welch Dendler has created a fairy-tale masterpiece. Reminiscent of fairy-tales of old, readers will fall in love with Bianca. Her adventures are appealing to boys and girls of all ages. Complete with a dragon, fairies, and the requisite witch, Bianca the Brave Frail and Delicate Princess is an endearing story that will endure. Brava!

This reader looks forward to reading some of Ms. Dendler’s other books.

The heroine of this fairy tale is Princess Bianca, who has lead an isolated and cosseted life for all of her thirteen years. When her father fails to return from an expedition, Princess Bianca’s extreme sense of duty kicks in and she sets off on Sammy the donkey, to find him, and the deadly dragon he is pursuing.

What a treat to find a main female character who is strong, brave and adventurous! Bianca embarks on a journey where she meets mystical creatures who equip her with powers needed to continue on her dangerous mission. When obstacles block her path she refuses to give up, she faces her fears and finds that everything is not always what it seems.

She also finds that she isn’t frail or delicate at all, quite the opposite in fact!

Children will be mesmerized by this beautifully written story. Princess Bianca is just delightful and all the characters she meets are captivating and thoroughly entertaining.

Some valuable life lessons can be learned from this story, especially that determination can conquer everything and that people (and dragons!) can be badly misunderstood!

Thank you Meg for a copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly and fairly.

Ever since Princess Bianca was born, she has been determined to be so frail and delicate that she needs to be diligently protected. Thus, she has never once been outside the castle where she lives, even at 13 years old. Every day, Princess Bianca wakes up and follows the same exact (very boring!) routine, but one thing always managed to cheer her up: reading her favorite fairy-tale books. However, things slowly start to get weird when Bianca starts to hear rumors that something very scary and very dangerous is coming to her village of Pacifico. Bianca discovers that it is a dragon that is trying to come to her village, and her father and some of the royal guards set off to find the dragon and protect Pacifico. After weeks of not hearing back from them, Bianca knows something has gone terribly wrong. If no one is going to do anything to save her father and her village, she knows she has to. But how will a sole princess, who has never even been outside her castle, be able to protect her whole village from a dragon?

Opinion:
I loved this book! The writing style was very smooth, and I enjoyed how the author was able to seamlessly weave in some great vocabulary such as "frolicking" and "safeguarding". I also enjoyed how the author gave descriptions of the supporting characters through actions such as showing us how the Nanny is strict but caring. We also got to see a lot of Princess Bianca's personality through this such as her being grateful for the comforts she has in life but also knowing there is more she wants to experience. There was the perfect amount of suspense throughout the story, and the pace of the story was consistent throughout. The plot of the story was also very interesting, and I found that I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. The concept of the story itself was really cool, and I liked how we saw Princess Bianca gain confidence as the story went on. I highly recommend this book to readers looking for a story full of adventure.

This book was provided to me for free in exchange for an honest review.

Princess Bianca of Pacifico has never left her castle. Every since her birth, in which she lost her mother, her father has been obsessed with her safety. Always worried she may fall ill, become injured, give herself a fright, Bianca was closed off from the world around her. Her schooling through carefully vetted tutors and sneaking through the castle eavesdropping were her only means of learning about the outside world. Upon discovering that her father and his knights were leaving the castle in search of a dangerous dragon terrorizing the countryside, Bianca's interest in the outside world peaks ten fold. After three long weeks, when the hunting party still has not returned, Bianca takes matters into her own hands, stealing away to search for her father and deal with the dragon herself. Can Bianca survive out in the world by herself and put an end to the dragon drama once and for all?

What a lovely read! Geared towards a more 5th-7th grade reading level I found this one lots of fun! I especially loved what a strong and courageous character Princess Bianca was, #girlpower! I love books with strong female characters and think they are so important especially for the younger readers. So many great underlying themes dispersed throughout the book; courage, defying stereotypes, being open minded, kindness, breaking out of gender norms. I would definitely recommend this one to read with your kids, boys and girls alike. There was tons of adventure to keep any overactive imagination occupied. The author has really opened up an endless world of adventures for Princess Bianca and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future!

I enjoyed this story of Bianca, the frail and delicate princess who is kept locked up in her father’s castle in case of accidental death. When danger threatens the kingdom, it’s up to Bianca to save her realm.
This is very much a fairy tale with Bianca setting out on a quest and encountering various characters along the way who give her advice or magical items to help or hinder her. There’s a talking dragon, a flying cat, witches, fairies, and (surprisingly to me) mention of an Easter egg hunt. I particularly liked Bianca spending her days secretly running and playing around the castle which built up her stamina, unbeknownst to all her servants. I loved her courage and her determination to save her people from the dragon. Bianca has never been allowed to get close to animals of any kind in case she catches something, so I was bit surprised she thought badgers and other woodland creatures ‘boring’, had ‘no use’ for a cat (which of course she did) and was ready to hit a donkey with a heavy stick to get it to move. The latter turns into an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of using a carrot over a stick (literally), as Bianca reflects how using the stick probably wouldn’t have worked (not that it would have been cruel or wrong). Bianca, as a princess used to being waited on, is a work in progress, and I have no doubt we will see her grow further over the course of the series.
The plot is quite simple, but the story flows well and is nicely told, and kept my interest throughout. I think the book is closer to elementary standard than middle grade, but I have no doubt that younger readers will greatly enjoy Bianca’s adventures.

Bianca the Brave Frail and Delicate Princess is about a young princess who has been locked up in a castle all her life. Not for some fairy tale reason but because she was born very weak and her father, the king, is very overprotective of her. When her father leaves to fight off a dragon in the kingdom and doesn't return in a timely manner, Bianca decides that she is going to go out and fight the dragon for him. She leaves the castle and starts off on an adventure.

I really enjoy Meg Dendler's stories, she has a wonderful way of immediately getting the readers attention. I was interested in how Bianca makes her own way and how she experiences the outside world. I actually would have liked more of her experiences being outside of the castle but overall the story was well-paced.

Bianca was easily likable and didn't have a completely woe-is-me attitude which was refreshing.I loved her interactions with the other characters and animals throughout the story. She was a good main character to follow along with.

I really enjoyed the whole story. It ended a little abruptly but I thought it was a lot of fun.

Bianca was a lonely little princess, her father the king was an overprotective man, he turned her life into a boring one, to think, she had never been allowed to venture outside, feel the sun on her face or even frolic in the wonderful grass, no she was denied all these and more. Her only adventure and knowledge came from the wonderful books she had, which were her companions. As she grew older she wanted more, she had imagined and pretended lots of situations while sneaking about her lonely castle, praying to be able to actually do some of these things one day, alas her prayers were answered much to her sadness. This has been a delightful read, the storyline is good and the characters are quaint and interesting, we have dragons, faeries, witches, fairy cats and a normal donkey or is he?

I had such high hopes for this one, but it was terrible. The writing is awful - in parts, it felt like a 10-year-old had written it. It occasionally uses words wrong, or that don't exist (mamothsome?). The world-building is actively bad (everyone is happy in this kingdom! There is no crime! Because everyone knows everyone else! In a kingdom thousands of miles wide! Oh wait......). The "adventures" Bianca has make no sense either, and fail to form a cohesive narrative. Very disappointing.

I read this book with my eight year old and we both loved it. A great story about brushing off the stereotypes people place on us and being true to oneself. A few quotes from my daughter: "This should be a movie!", "I did not see that coming!", and once we finished, "I don't want it to be over!". We will be reading a lot more of Meg Welch Dendler.

Cute story

Told in a similar way as The Paperbag Princess, this tale blends magical creatures, a dragon, a cat, a donkey and an endearing princess into a fun romp through the forests and farmlands.

Charming story of an over-protected princess who heads out to save her kingdom. The princess reads a bit young for 13 and she sees so few people it's a bit hard for her to show off her personality, but she struggles through and makes some choices.

Just a short and sweet chapter book, very much in the vein of a younger Dealing with Dragons. It's very short and quite simplistic - everything happens very easily - but I liked Bianca's determination and courage, and I could definitely see my sisters loving this!
