It's been so long since I've written a review. But I feel like if I don't write this then I'd go crazy. So here's my attempt at putting my thoughts into coherent words.

It's been so long since a book has affected me like this. The last time this happened I think it was 3 years ago with Vampire Academy. I've read many great books since then but not any that had me so emotionally invested that I tried to complete my exam early so that I'd get to read it while I waited for my mom to pick me up. (Don't worry, I passed my exams. Also, word of advice, don't start such long books just before exams.)

First I'll tell you the story of how I discovered this fanfiction. I saw a random fanvid in my Youtube suggestions which seemed pretty interesting. It was a trailer for House of Cards by Sapphiamur and I decided to check it out. Amazing is an understatement. Seriously the trailer is so well-made, it looks like a trailer for an actual movie! Just go check it out, it won't disappoint! I was so obsessed with it, I made all my friends watch it. In the description I saw that it was based on a fanfiction by sugamins so I downloaded it from Ao3 and started reading it after my midterms. Safe to say I was hooked!

House of Cards is so well-written that it's a shame it isn't an actual published book. The amount of research and thought that went into this book, this author has amazing talent! Even without a whole team behind her (him?) they were able to include details of cars, guns, drugs, businesses, police work, the underground world and I was constantly blown away by how much research went into writing this. This kind of dedication and hard-work needs to be recognized. I mean if trash fanfic like Fifty Shades of Grey can be a best-seller then House of Cards deserves way more recognition because it's actually good fiction.

There are very few authors who can write such complex characters. Who can make you sympathize with monsters. Who can make you hate a character one minute, then love him the next. This book showed that were aren't only good people or bad people. People are grey. And even monsters are capable of love. It played with my head so bad that I can't even explain it. These characters are extremely well-written, one of the best I have ever read and you'll only understand what I mean if you read the book.

In terms of the fanfiction aspect, I love how the author added little character traits that resonated with the actual BTS members. Namjoon being the selfless, smart leader. Jimin being tidy and wanting praise and attention (The way this was played into his back story was amazing). Yoongi's gummy smile. Taehyung's habit of wetting his lips. It was easy to imagine the boys as these characters. As if it was a movie and they were the actors.

I wanna talk about each character separately and to be honest I could go on talking about House of Cards forever, it's THAT amazing. But I want this review to be spoiler free so I'll stop here. I loved this book a lot and I know that it'll stay with me for a long long time. By the end of it I was a sobbing mess and books that make you cry like that with feels, you just know they're good.

I highly recommend House of Cards. Don't let the fact that it's a fanfiction stop you from reading it. It's better written than a lot of books out there. Also you don't even have to be a BTS fan to enjoy it. Its so good, I feel like anyone would like it even if they have no idea who BTS is. But do check the tags on AO3 before reading it because it has A LOT of sensitive content.

Hit me up if you decide to read it or have already read it. I need someone to fangirl with!

One hundred percent, this is one of the best books I have ever read. If you haven't read it, you need to. Granted, it can be really graphic, but there are plenty of warnings beforehand. Very detailed! It certainly makes you feel as though you're in the book in someway, possibly watching everything go down from afar. If you're an ARMY, you'll probably look at Jeongguk and Taehyung a little bit differently for a few days! Fair warning, LOL!

I read this nearly two years ago and honestly, it's one of the only books (yes book, not fanfic, because it deserves to be referred to as more than a fanwork) that has profoundly impacted me on just about every level. The writing in itself is exquisite and the story telling is a style like I have never really seen before especially in the fanfiction world. Probably my favourite thing about it is every character's development and the development of the relationship dynamics between them all. As for the ending, I loved how realistic it was to finish off such a 'realistic' - feeling story (which again, the fact the story felt realistic shows story telling mastery in itself). While not a 'sad' or cliffhanger ending, it's also not a cliché 'happy' one, left open with just the right amount of ambiguity and tenderness. This book ruined me in the best way possible and I so wish I could have a physical copy. Thankyou to sugamins for creating this masterpiece.

I really, really liked this book.
All characters have depth, you really empathize with them, even the darkest part of them.
The story is absorbing, interesting, it's a thriller that never leave you bored or with the known of what's going to happen next, it's always fresh and exciting.
Also, I really appreciate the poly-relationship; it's rare you see a real poly, everytime is just a couple with a third person less important than the other two...this is not the case. Every one in the trio is equal and special in his way, addicted to the other two for different aspects but in the same intensity.
I truly liked all this work.
Highly recommend.

I have so many things to say about this book but I feel like all of my words and thoughts have currently left me. Anything I would try to say now, won't do justice to how I actually feel. Basically, this broke me. I am and will probably be a mess for a long time. People are not just good or bad. They are gray. Monsters are capable of love. Love changes people in way nobody could ever imagine. "Good" people are capable of doing more wrong than supposedly "bad" people. Man, this book played with my head and emotions so hard...
This fanfiction was incredibly well written, the amount of research that went into it is amazing, I can only stand and applaud the author for that. The story was immersive and kept you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I can't fathom how this is not an actual published book? Because it was truly better than so many published books I've read in my life.
The characters: Incredibly complex and well developed. Yeah, they were the members of BTS but, what I loved was the fact that even though they were so different from real life, there were certain traits that were kept and that in a way, constantly reminded you of the real, human, existing side of this universe's characters.
Lastly, the depiction of mental illness was very well portrayed, detailed and not romanticized even in the slightest, which is an aspect sometimes(most times) overlooked in works of fiction.
I loved this so much. I truly wish I could erase my memory so I could start reading it again right away.
TW for a bunch of things, but the author lists them all at the beginning of their work. You can find their work here. Amazing. Truly amazing. I will probably never stop talking about this.

Honestly this book is more like a 3.5 but I'm giving it a higher review because admittedly it was a fanfiction and easily one of the best fanfictions I've ever read.

Here's the preface that I would like to set up for this story, none of the characters were truly characterized correctly to the actual members of BTS, and that's totally okay. The story was written a while ago and honestly their names and faces seemed more as a way to draw the reader into the story and less to actually adhere to their personality traits.

I mean Jungkook isn't actually a murderous psychopathic gang leader and that's alright with me, but I am aware that his name and face gains more clicks so honestly more respect to you author-nim. I mean I only read this story because other ARMY's kept recommending it.

Now onto an actual review.

This story's main brilliance was it's unpackaging of the "moral grey zone", our three main characters are incredibly complicated, with frustrating moral compasses, histories and value systems and the more you read into the story the more these traits complicate themselves. The story is wildly realistic, despite all of it's obvious stylistic choices and symbolism, almost every decision having a rather long complicated set of consequences on the psychology of the character. Each trauma is accounted for with painful precision, while ensuring the reader doesn't get desensitized to the abuse and the physical and psychological violence. The story isn't about good vs evil, or even examining the morality of the "moral grey zone", it was more about focusing on the psychological effects of actively living in the "moral grey zone" and making decisions with rather complicated motivations. The dramatic irony the author used to highlight this were actually some of my favorite parts of the story,

Also, and I feel like I may iterate this a million times over, but character writing. This book actually felt like a really good crash course on writing not necessarily reliable or likeable main characters but deeply naive characters. Taehyung is literally doped out through half of the story as well as emotionally manipulating or being emotionally manipulated by others. And due to the multiperspectival view that the author gives you, you know a lot more than your main character. Which induces a lot of panic, but also emphasizes what they are going through in a really visceral way. You begin to understand that these are essentially children being dumped in a situation that they're too naive to really understand, children who need validation and company. Children who are fundamentally depressed and lonely because of their circumstances. Children who play God and think they can control everything when at the end of the day they're powerless. Children who need to be needed.
With all of this in mind the writing is incredibly graphic and explicit, with scenes that even I had to skip, despite the fact that I literally read all of Game of Thrones last year. And while none of it felt gratuitous this book is definitely not for the weak stomached, I distinctly remember turning away from the story several times just to take a breather from it all. I'd also like to point out with the author's comittment to realism there's a danger in the story becoming kind of too immersive, which can make it kind of a dragger on your mood, but that might have just been me.

There's also just a lot of exposition, girl did her RESEARCH and it shows, but that does mean you have to go through a lot of kind of jargon stuff before you reach the really fascinating part of the story, which is the INTENSIVE characterization and plot.

The end of the book was also, something.

But all my qualms aside regarding the sometimes pandery writing I seriously appreciated the complexity of her characterization. Like seriously, it takes actual skill to make you sympathize with a guy who thinks ripping out someone's teeth is an enjoyable use of a Wednesday afternoon.

Also this story has some lines. Like LINES, mostly said by Jungkook, as well as one of the best chess analogies I've seen used in fiction. I'm not joking. I got chills at the end EVEN THOUGH I disliked the last chapter.

"Taehyung ran his fingers along the board before reaching in to start collecting the pieces, placing them down on either side almost as if he was going to start playing a game. A game against a ghost perhaps? He picked up the white king piece and he was about to place it down when he noticed something about it and he stopped. There was a chip in the piece. Taehyung lifted the piece closer to his eyes to study it better and sure enough he saw that there was a chip and when he ran his thumb along it he felt that deep notch in the wood. It was unmissable really and yet this entire time he had been so convinced that the entire set was in perfect condition. He has been wrong but the fact he hadn’t looked at the board in years might have clouded his memory. "

Honestly I'm just going to have a moment to appreciate some of the gorgeous pieces of dialouge in this story.

"I feel like I never got to be a child but I’m never going to…to be an adult because there’s just always going to be something missing. I can feel that hollowness just like you said, I’ve been feeling it my entire life and it’s still there right now."

"Worried about hell? I've been in hell ever since I was born on this earth. Living is fucking hell, but you don't need to worry about that any longer."

"One day we can play. Black versus white, the ultimate game of power. Maybe you'll beat me, no one ever has."

"I guess it just takes a monster to take down another monster."

"I've been playing war games since I was three fucking years old, and I've never lost. Not once."
"Just like chess"
"Just like...like chess" He agreed, the rifle trembling in his shaking hands. "Say it Taehyung finish the game."
"Checkmate, Jungkook."

I'm sure I could probably spend hours actually going over a proper analysis of this story, but I will save everyone the trouble and just highly recommend it. It really made me think and is definitely one of the best fanfictions I've ever read. Seriously. I can't recommend it highly enough, as well as the song it's based on. And the band. ;)

such heavy themes that I nearly stopped reading a few times but I'm so glad I kept going. Literally one of the best books I've ever read. Super confronting, intense and every character is complex. I love every single one of them and I'm not sure if I should.

The ending (and basically the whole book) killed me. I never knew what was going to happen next and the characters were scary unpredictable in a realistic way. Nothing was black and white and I never knew what to think about their actions. Literally caused me to SOB a few times, I was a wreck at the end, I couldn't believe it was over.

So so good and I'm so so glad I read it but it's definitely not for everyone.

This was the best book i read in 2017. it'S 400K words and i read it in less than 24 hours. I love the writing, Tae's journey and the world created in it. I've wanted to re read it and that is very rare for me.

please don’t judge. this fic lives in my head too much for me to not log 😭😭 tbh, i dont even read this as /fanfiction/ this is a full blown book with its completely unique characters and everything for me. it feels wrong to me to associate it with the fandom atp, it’s a masterpiece on its own completely unrelated to the source.

This is one of my favorite books of all time and i have read a lot of books in my young age. I wish this was published so more people even outside the fandom could havethe privilege of reading this. Currently re-reading and it's as good as the first time . This story is proof that "fanfics" can be considered litterature . Author created a whole ass world and personalities and storylines , only the singer's names remain with a few characteristic ( and i'm saying this as something positive as much as i like the real peeps ) ok imma stop because i am bad at writing in english lol

PLOT: The fiction contains 25 Chapters of 400k word count so yeah, it's pretty long. The story starts when Kim Taehyung, a rookie Police Officer was sent to infiltrate a big Korean Mob led by the Mob Founder's son Jeon Jungkook. As he successfully infiltrates the mob and gets close to Jungkook, all sorts of crazy shts happened for Taehyung in order to survive and from there you just can't stop reading. This story is, for one thing, very original. I love reading both fanfiction and non fanfiction and this truly is one of the most memorable pieces of literature I have ever come across. I don’t mind reading violence and gore, but even I was really surprised at the details this story involved. I mark this as a masterpiece in psychological thriller.

CHARACTERS: The characters are all BTS members who functions in different parts of the story. The Main Characters Kim Taehyung, Jeon Jungkook and Park Jimin were complex in more ways than one. There are very few authors who can write such complex characters. Who can make you sympathize with monsters. Who can make you hate a character one minute, then love him the next. This fanfic showed that we're not only good people or bad people. People are grey. And even monsters are capable of love. It played with my head so bad that I can't even explain it.

REALISM: House of Cards is so well-written that it's a shame it isn't an actual published book. The amount of research and thought that went into this book, this author has amazing talent! Even without a whole team behind her (him?) they were able to include details of cars, guns, drugs, businesses, police work, the underground world and I was constantly blown away by how much research went into writing this. Some aspects somewhat makes you dumbfounded that they actually happen in real life and people do these things in order to survive.

HIGHLIGHTS: Everything. Hahaha You have to appreciate every part of this because it's just that awesome hahahah! Okay kidding aside, I love Yoongi and Jimin interactions. They're sincere to each other and they don't need intimacy to prove that :)

BEST QUOTES: "Out there things are going to get terrifying for you. You will see things and hear things that will fuck you up. You will do bad things. Because that's how you survive. But you're one of the good guys. No matter what happens, I know you won't let that shit destroy you." -Kim Namjoon

MEMORABLE AS: Psychologically driven, Thriller, Explicit Sexual and Language Content. Yoonmin moments, Memorable dialogues!

House of Cards is one heck-of-a-ride so it's a shame it's not a book (yet). I mean if fanfics like Fifty Shades of Grey can be a best-seller then House of Cards deserves way more recognition because it's actually good fiction.

For warnings, this fic has a lot of sensitive content. Do read the warning tags before you proceed. But if you're okay with that and just want to see a nice gem, then please read it because you'll be missing a great story here if you don't!!

This fic fucking ruined me. IT FUCKING RUINED ME.

It's a story about a police officer Taehyung going undercover to take down the criminal group in Seoul. The head of the gang is Jeon the father of Jeon Jungkook. So Taehyung by Jungkook's insistence gets close to him, really close to him and he has a big shot of taking down the empire.

I won't spoil it for you but let me tell you my feelings for this fic. Why did it ruin me you ask. Well have you ever felt sympathy for a murderer? Have you ever cried because of a fucking criminal? HAVE YOU EVER FELT BAD ABOUT A FUCKING CRIMINAL? WELL THIS BOOK MADE ME FEEL FUCKING SYMPATHY FOR THE WORST PERSON IN THE FIC AND IF THAT'S NOT TELLING OF HOW HIGH QUALITY THIS FIC IS I DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL.

The fic was a rollercoaster ride. At the beginning of the book my main feeling was disgust. I felt disgusted about what was happening inside Tae's head and in general I felt disgusted by what was happening in general. I also felt guilty for feeling aroused in certain scenes that I felt like I shouldn't have. But then that disgust turned into understanding. This shit is crazy the author played with my head so well I started understanding the situation of the bad guy. The only person I dont feel guilty feeling sympathy for is Jimin. I swear Jimin is a fucking Saint that just got caught up in the mess and was just collateral damage but Jimin is a fucking Saint.

I want to talk about Yoongi too because that guy is a nice guy too. Has too many problems but he is one of the only decent guys in the fic. The only moment I got to laugh in this fic was because of him. A drug dealer that has no idea what his drugs are called. Fucking hilarious really made my day.

Anyway, even though I knew that what was happening was all wrong and DEFINITELY whatever they were feeling was NOT love I just couldn't stop feeling SYMPATHY for them. I was REALLY FEELING LIKE SHIT. Oh and let me tell you about the end of the book I was feeling ANXIETY ALRIGHT? THOSE LAST CHAPTERS HAD ME ON EDGE AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT OUTCOME I PREFERRED MORE BUT I WAS FUCKING ANXIOUS AND I COULDN'T BREATH. And when the shit went down I fucking started crying? I FELT BAD FOR THE BAD GUY? TELL ME HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE LIKE I WAS FUCKING SOBBING? The whole situation is fucked up fucked up that's why the fic is so good because it fucks you up so good you start feeling bad for the characters you definitely shouldn't feel bad for.

A masterpiece not for the weak 5 stars well deserved.

People have often accused fanfiction writers of thriving on the achievements of others as if the authors need not do extra researches, work overtime or sometimes stare at screen for as long as months before the words trickle down little by little like blood. Same goes for this masterpiece. For a book lover who was completely against fanfiction this book was a manna. I found my way to a world that is definitely worth it.
The book is completely a cherry on top for all lovers of books who are not into cliched romance or one dimensional characters.
When I first went through the book reviews and the trailers of the work, I was half disgusted. I am what you would call a faint hearted reader who finds the meaningless murders and the grotesque killings or kinky sex a bit too unpalatable for my delicate taste buds. But I was in for a surprise when I first held the book.

From the beginning, there was not a single character who did not resonate with my heart even for once. As a matter of fact, the book was like a journey within my psyche where I found different parts of me within the work.
Kind but deeply haunted Namjoon, cheerful Hoseok, stuttering and timid Tae, deeply caring Jimin, a scarred man-child Jungkook and finally, the master of the spies Seokjin...just looking at the description of the characters might give you an idea about what I am talking of: intense and endless diversity.
Moreover, the level of research that has gone into the work is simply phenomenal. You cannot deny that the author has delved deeply into the darker sides of life and imagined them all giving us a fresh new perspective regarding everything.

So will I say that the work is harmful or not for the fainthearted? I definitely will not because at the end of the day, I think it is the innocent ones who can truly understand the inner child within all the characters and that is what this book definitely is about; finding your inner child and a closer introspection into who you are.

After all, even the angels can be devils if they stare at the devil for long enough.

...

I swear I have never read a book that has broken my heart more thoroughly than this one.

I could not stop reading this story, in class, at lunch, in every snatch of a moment until I finally finished the story, face wet with dripping tears. Oh. My. God. This story... I don't have the words to fully grasp the... the intensity that it grabbed me with. I could go on and on and on and on about this story and NEVER have anything bad to say about it.

Break my heart, over and over again. Please.

This story... it topples just about everything else I've ever read. No published book has ever made me sob like this, a feeling of apprehension in my stomach. I can only ever have the highest praise for "House of Cards" and I hope I'll have it for "Ophelia" too, which I'm currently reading.

Sugamins, this author, whoever you are, I hope you have a published book because that... this much talent can NOT be wasted. Not that this was ever a waste, such a breaker of hearts as it were. But... wow... I salute you. This story was, is, will be amazing. Forever.

And I doubt there could ever be a book better than this. If I could give more than five stars, I truly would. Honestly. And that's a very heartfelt compliment from someone who's been so skeptical of so many books, scoffing at published works for their un-original ideas and plotholes and ideas that just fall flat when they could have risen.

Thank you so much for this emotional rollercoaster.

I hope "Ophelia" will be just as sensational.
