Don Ball, Jr. was the author that introduced me to the world of railroad photography. I'll never forget the first time that I checked out America's Railroads: The Second Generation from my local library. The dozens and dozens of subsequent check-outs must have made the librarians wonder if I ever read anything else.

While the photography in most of Ball's books is always excellent, it is almost always feels documentary. Interesting to be sure but not the most artistic. That is certainly not the case with Rails. Ball transcends all of his previous works and delivers a fine art tour de force. Every time I pull Rails off of my shelf and slowly flip through its pages, I am in awe of the talent and artistic eye of Mr. Ball.

I highly recommend Rails for any fan of railroading or photography, but especially devotees of both subjects.
