Welcome, friends, fairies, and creatures of the night. Tonight, you are in for a night of magic, mystery, and mayhem. Welcome to the Rose Circus!

The last thing Ara expected was to be forced into a traveling circus of immortals led by a cursed Ringmaster with a dark past.

She quickly discovers that when it comes to the Rose Circus, nothing is as it seems. The group she’s traveling with are cursed members of the Fae who have had their magic stolen, which protects them from powerful enemies. Fitting in is hard enough without learning that she is capable of breaking the curse protecting them if she and the Ringmaster can’t set aside their growing attraction, putting a target on her back.

When she finally makes her escape back to reality, she is captured by a powerful Fae queen and finds herself in the middle of a centuries old war, with all of the magic left on earth at stake.

Carrying a legacy of magic, herself, the only way Ara is going to make it out of this alive is if she can find a way to unleash her own hidden power.

After having read Dyan Chick's YA Illaria series, I was intrigued to see what she had to offer for an urban fantasy. What I found in Fae Cursed, between the characters, the storyline, and the writing was quite a pleasant surprise. The character of Ara speaks to the reader of a young woman with a complex past who is just trying to do right with her life and the family she has left. This relatability at a core level is something I am finding Ms. Chick to be very good at doing. Ara's "accidental" stumbling over the Rose Circus and the world of the fae, has the reader always wondering what will happen next and hoping Ara will be able to hold her own in the process. The subtle references to a more common fairy tale story are expertly woven in, and to be honest, I didn't even make the connection myself until about one third of the way through, despite knowing about it in advance. This book kept my attention so well that I actually found myself playing the "one more scene" game before bed, which I haven't experienced from a fairly new author in a long while. Whole heartedly looking forward to the next addition to this tale.

In full disclosure, I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

Thanks to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This doesn't in any way influence my opinion on it.
description
Fae Cursed is the first book is a dazzling new series from the multi talented Dyan Chick. Her foray into Urban Fantasy is a brilliant culmination of superb writing, amazing characters, refreshing storylines, hot romance and amazing magic. Ara goes looking for her brother Ryder at a party (which is not usually his style) but instead comes in contact with The Rose Circus who are the entertainment of the party. They're kind of like a circus but their stunts are so real it's confusing. Ara gets drawn in a creepy cat and mouse game with the mysterious Ringmaster of the Rose Circus that results in her making a deal with him to save her brother. Ara will work for him for a year until they're back in Chicago to work of her brothers debt. Working with The Rose Circus changes Ara's life as she slowly realises that the members of the Circus aren't human. They are various different creatures of many species and she's the only human among them for reasons unknown to her. Things are confusing at first as Ara tries to find out her true purpose being in the Circus and the whole story of how everything came to be the way it is. She gets closer to Brenon (The Ringmaster) but there are just too many things that don't make sense but matter because they could make or break whatever's growing between them. Ara discovers that the Fae have been banished from their kingdom and their magic was taken from them while a curse was placed on them to make them Immortal and only a human can break such curse. Not wanting anything to do with wars and magic immortal beings, Ara escapes the Circus with a little bit of help. But unfortunately she falls right into the hands of the Fae Queen, She is a menace who is determined to do whatever it takes to get the Fae back to their original glory. And as it so happens to be, Ara is the key to getting everything she's worked for and she is willing to get it in any way possible. Ara realises she's in trouble when it's too late but she also knew she's going to have to find away out of her predicament and get her life back or die trying. A lot of action went down in the ending and all the things laid down from the beginning of the book culminated in an explosive battle that left me wanting more in this series. The romance between Ara and Brenon is hot and sizzling despite the many complications and obstacles in front of them also the fact that he is a tad bit too manipulative at times. Fae Cursed is a thrilling ride of magic, monsters, action, romance, fae, adventure and danger. I can't wait for the next book in the Legacy of Magic series by the amazing Dyan Chick.

P.S:That cover is just so beautiful, love the colour and symbolism it really captures the essence of Ara's magic.

2 1/2 stars. Ara is a complex character who has struggled hard to get clean and sober after being in the party scene. She finally has a good job and thinks her brother has navigated through the perils of adolescence and is off to college. Unfortunately he get himself into trouble gambling and she gives up everything to save him.

So far so good. The premise of being stuck for one year at this Circus of the cursed fae is interesting and has potential. Things slowly unfold, secrets are revealed in layers, and there is plenty of action. What annoyed me was Ara's saying over and over again, I don't understand. She thinks that she can just storm off to the ringmaster and get her questions answered. Hello, she did this to save her brother, she is over the barrel, he doesn't have to answer anything.

I also don't get the attraction to Brenon. She insists she is only there for one year then she's out. Ara has every reason to stay away from him: Brenon trapped her into this situation, people threaten her to stay away from him, she discovers her life is in danger by a powerful fae Queen if she is on his side. Yet she reaches out to him when she doesn't always like him. I just don't see the appeal and she is old enough not to fall for the forbidden fruit path.

Things get better as time goes on. There are some nice moments between Brenon and Ara. She stops being completely useless by not saying I don't understand all the time. Ara begins to fit into the Circus group and comes into her own.

Some good and some annoying things.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

I just didn't like the plot, or the characters. -- I'd liked the first book of her other series 'Dragon Mage'. I'm pleased I read this one second.

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

I received an ARC copy of Fae Cursed in return for my honest opinion.
WOW! I stayed up way too late finishing this book last night- but I couldn't put it down. From the beginning the pace was wonderful and I was never bored as the story was slowly revealed as we found out there were more and more secrets to discover. I adore magic worlds and Dylan Chick has created a wonderful, unique take on fae and I can't wait for the next book!
Ara struggles to stay away from the mysterious Rose Circus that threatens to pull her back into the life she has worked so hard to leave behind. When circumstances lead her to commit to traveling with the circus for a year she never expected her life to be at risk. Now she must stay alive and discover the secrets of the Rose Circus while fighting her attraction to the mysterious Ringleader.

Unique idea? Still confused about the ending showdown with terra. Was it conjured by Brenon or real? I don't know. The shower scene was a bit out of the blue. I almost wish Ara was like "Boy you better get yo ass out of here before I kick it out. I ain't getting naked for you."

But we all know that didn't happen. o_O It didn't feel erotic when they were washing each other. It felt creepy. He had his hands all over her and then was like "now wash me". She immediately jumped at the chance to wash him, of course, because he's sooooo hot. bleh.

Fantastic new series

Staying the responsible one is harder than you think when the deck us stacked against you. Being the stronger person and being the adult can unleash the feelings inside and letting yourself go can help you see the magic. Nicely written, a story to capture your interest and your heart. Can't wait for more

This one started a little slow for me but if you stick with it, it turns out to be a good read. It's a good start to the series and has a lot of the background detail you need for everything to make sense. Lots of mysteries that don't all get solved until the second book.

For those who want to know: This one has violence.

It's different

I find the plot interesting, it's definitely different from what I have read before. There were a lot of characters involved and I did catch on after a bit. There was something special about it though....i have it a 5 star for creativity

Decent

The storyline was good but took too long to get to where you could grasp where the author was wanting to take you. The book was rife with grammatical errors as well which also detracts from the story.

Great story. So fascinating that I read it nonstop. Somewhat reminiscent of the Beauty and the Beast. There's a great curse and somewhere there is a method to break it. But should it be broken?
