Charming Romance 3.5*
I enjoyed this book though I do think that I was at a slight disadvantage not having read the first two books in the series. Captain Jack Boone, now Lord Rothwell is asked by his foster mother to visit Lady Morehouse who has a magical problem. He doesn't expect when he arrives for that redoubtable lady to try and marry him off to her pregnant great niece, Alicia. However, he doesn't want to be disobliging so when Kate suggests that he marry her instead, he agrees!!! This was the fastest marriage proposal and acceptance ever, can't have been more than 5 minutes after meeting. One wouldn't have thought it would work, particularly as Jack was also taking on a sister-in-law who appears intent on blowing up everything around her but it does.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

Being a lover of fantasy and historical, this book was a nice surprise as it hits both of those genres in one. It was a little too tame for my tastes, both in the magical part and the romance, but the author does a nice job combining the two genres. Even though this was a series book, it held up just fine on its own. There is some fun banter between the characters and some fun with the magic tossed in. Reviewed by Cyrene

Another treat

Brinkley gives us engaging characters, witty banter, and an extended family to love. Each book is distinctive and well written. They do contain explicit sexual content, which isn't quite traditional Regency. I wouldn't find them a loss, but I love the threads of magic in this alternate world.

Lovely romance with magic thrown in. Captain Boone just wants to get back to his ship. Little does he know he'll end up marrying. Enjoyable but should of read the first two, although it still was understandable. Great author

The Romance Review

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

Surprising, in more ways than one!

Jack is a newly titled gentleman with an estate to run. As a captain for so many years, he is used to life at sea and knows nothing about managing a home or breeding pigs. The answer to his problem is to marry a woman with the knowledge to do what he can't so he can go back to his ship. So when the opportunity arrives, he jumps on it.

Kate hadn't planned to marry at all. Yet, when her sister falls into a delicate situation and reveals dangerous magical abilities, Kate knows one of them must marry. Still, Kate is stunned when she offers her own hand in marriage to the handsome lord, instead of her sister. The man is everything she never thought she would find. The problem is, he doesn't plan to stick around. Can she convince him that his place is by her side and not on the high seas?

It was the cover that first drew me to this book and I initially thought it was a historical romance. Well it is, but it's also a paranormal novel with several characters having or receiving magic throughout the story. I can honestly say that I haven't read anything quite like this. It was a traditional historical story in many ways, with English society's rules and yet it somehow incorporated magic without it seeming out of place or forced. Thumbs up, for sure.

Our couple's personalities were another surprise. Jack reminded me a lot of my own husband. He wasn't afraid of marrying a strong and intelligent woman and he had a perverse sense of humor. I chuckled a lot while reading the book. And Kate was both protective over her sister and loyal to her new husband. She was a girl after my own heart and easy to connect with.

I'm not used to reading stories where the couple are so perfectly suited and actually accept their relationship without a lot of strife. This pair saw an advantage to being married and jumped in without chapters and chapters of conflict. In fact, most of their troubles stemmed from other characters and uncertainties about the direction of their future. I was quite content while reading this story.

The romance was pretty good. The pair teased each other and communicated fairly well for two strangers. The bedroom scenes were glossed over. That was a bit of a bummer as I usually look forward to seeing the fireworks happen. The couple are intimate quite a bit, but we don't get to see much of it. While I don't necessarily think it took anything away from the story, I do wish we had gotten at least one one good love scene.

In closing...
I am curious about the other couples mentioned in this book. And I definitely want to know what happens with Kate's sister. Four suns!

This book focuses on Captain Jack. He makes small appearances in the other two books, but we get an idea of his character from what is revealed about him. He is a joker and loves his ship and sailing. He inherits/is given a title he doesn’t really want as he has no affinity with estate management. Through the involvement of others he marries very quickly to a woman he believes will be a good estate manager and companion.
They get on very well, but she is land bound while his love is the sea. Throw in an unmarried, pregnant younger sister, with explosive anger issues and their developing love and things get complicated. Finding a way to create a balance in their lives becomes top their priority.
Once again a delightful story, with great supporting family members. I hope some of them get their own stories in the future, I’ve become quite attached to them.
