Southern Eclectic #1.5

Peachy Flippin' Keen

Rate this book
A prank war erupts in Lake Sackett, Georgia and coroner Frankie McCready has to turn to the gorgeous but surly new sheriff for help in Molly Harper’s newest Southern Eclectic novella, perfect for fans of Kristan Higgins and Amy E. Reichert.

The McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop has crickets running rampant in the store and hot sauce in the Snack Shack’s ketchup bottles. But as the county coroner, Frankie has enough on her plate without worrying about the increasingly mean pranks being played at her family’s business. And the arrival of Sheriff Eric Linden, both devastatingly attractive and painfully taciturn, is enough to push her over the edge.

Linden, who didn’t seem to get the memo about men in uniform and Southern charm, is condescending and cold, revealing absolutely nothing about his past as an Atlanta police officer, while also making Frankie’s job as coroner as difficult as possible. And with the town’s Fourth of July celebration coming up, it’s essential for McCready’s to be cricket-free and in good working order. Strangling the sheriff will make her job even harder. Can Frankie hold off the threats to preserve her own sanity?

With her trademark “clever humor, snark, silliness, and endearing protagonists” (Booklist), Molly Harper invites fans to return to the family they first met in Sweet Tea and Sympathy. Y’all sit down and stay a while, won’t you?

Don't be taken in. This isn't a story. It is, at best, an extended prologue to Ain't She a Peach?. And I have to admit, I'm a bit upset that none of the storylines setup here are resolved here. I'd feel foolish if I'd had any indication for what it is, but since I didn't, I'm blaming the story. At least if fit into Audible's Romance package so I'm not out anything but the wasted time listening. And, since it's Amanda Ronconi narrating, I don't really begrudge the time. So two stars for being a take-in rather than one for wasting my time with a take-in...

I highly enjoyed this fun and southern novella! This was a quick read that I devoured easily in sitting and was desperate for the next in the series to get some answers and it was based off my fave, Frankie McCready! From reading the first book in the series, I really enjoyed Frankie's character. Frankie is a bit of a misfit and always is rocking some wild fashion statement. She's a southern rock chick which I can totally relate to that. I can also relate to the fact that she battled something harsh like cancer and still has to deal with people treating her a certain way or not understanding because she was sick a lot. She is also just so freaking hilarious! I love it!
The reason I am not giving this a novella a five star rating is because it just left too much hanging like I don't even know if you would call it any cliff hangers. I am hoping though that it will all make sense in the next book but overall this was a highly enjoyable read with the unusual McCready southern charm that I never want to miss out on!
I want to thank NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I appreciate this opportunity and all views expressed are my own.

This is a novella mainly focusing on Frankie, the sassy undertaker and county coroner. The family is in the midst of a prank war when a one night stand turns up and announces he is the new sheriff! Yikes!

Peachy Flippin' Keen

Molly Harper

PEACHY FLIPPIN' KEEN is the second book in the Southern Eclectic series by Molly Harper. It centers around Frankie failing to figure out why so many things are going wrong with the family business. Her family runs the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop. There is a prank war going on in Lake Sackett and poor Frankie McCready has no choice but to ask the crabby new sheriff for help. Eric Linden, the new sheriff, is big city and has no idea how to to handle this small town family, but he had me laughing out loud many times through out this quick novella.

Frankie's family is very large and very nosy and I found myself giggling out loud over and over again. Eric knows nothing about this part of the south and their customs and southern ways and it is hysterical as he learns the way of life in Lake Sackett. PEACHY FLIPPIN' KEEN is a very entertaining read and once I started reading it was very hard to put down. It is total culture shock for Eric and oh, I forgot to mention that he is also Frankie's latest one night stand. That was before she knew who he was! Frankie called an Uber in the middle of the night and ran as fast as she could. Trust me, this novella is just too funny.

I devoured every single page of PEACHY FLIPPIN' KEEN and when I finished I found myself wanting more. I loved all of the characters and wish I had a crazy and funny family like Frankie does. The tender moments in the story really pull at the readers heart strings. I loved how Frankie owns her quirkiness. She is the local coroner and a funky fashionista The banter between Frankie and Eric is funny but also frustrating at times. Both of them agree that they aren't in the right place in their lives for a relationship and agree to just be friends. Well, you know how that is going to go right? PEACHY FLIPPIN' KEEN is southern charm at its finest! I can not wait to continue this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.

Peachy Flipping Keen is a fun start to Frankie’s story. I can’t wait to find out more about Eric, the sheriff in town. Also I hope Frankie takes down that little shit, Jared.

A very quick and entertaining novella that leads into Ain't She a Peach?. You can read it, or not...it doesn't really matter but I liked it and I think it's worth it. I read this after Ain't She a Peach and it was fine but it would be better to read it first.

3.5 stars

Suprisingly enough, I liked this novella more than I liked the previous entries in this series. Mostly, this might be because I like Frankie so much. She made the book vibrant and fun! Yes, the range of other characters and their quirks make the book interesting too, but Frankie is just plain awesome. Margot and Marianne are interesting too, but reading about them in their books was a bit dull... Perhaps Frankie's novella is more interesting because it was shorter?

I will say this novella is definitely a lead in for the next book Ain't She a Peach and it feels like it. Nothing is really figured out, but it is all introduced and Frankie has finished trying to be nice. It feels more like a sneak preview than a standalone, which is how I prefer even my novellas, which is why I took off half a star. It seriously does feel like the beginning of a book -- and if cut down could possibly be included in the next book... maybe, I have yet to read it.
But, I did like reading this, so I'm glad it exists... quite a conundrum I'm feeling.

So, I'm glad I hopped on this and I look forward to reading the next book soon.

I’m going to put this out there right up front... I am giving this book a C+, even though I really liked the main charters, and I found the story engrossing and dialogue sharp. But here is why it’s not getting an A or B... Peachy Flippin’ Keen starts the story of Frankie McCready and Eric Linden, but comes no where close to finishing it. Peachy Flippin’ Keen is a fantastic beginning, but without the closure of the primary plot nor an HEA/HFN.

Told exclusively from Frankie’s POV, we learn about newcomer Sheriff Linden, who inherited a mess and is trying hard to make his office and position respectable again. He’s a bit cold with Frankie, but that’s probably because the weekend before he arrived in Lack Sackett, the pair had a one-night-stand, and Frankie Uber’d her way out in the middle of the night without saying goodbye. I enjoyed watching the pair tiptoe around each other, marking territory and setting the stage for what hopes to be a promising romance. But by the end of the book, the two aren’t even friends.

Equally entertaining and frustrating is the plot surrounding someone playing pranks on the McCready Family businesses. While Frankie is certain it’s a troublesome teen whose parents think the sun revolves around him, there is no evidence as to who may be playing the bothersome jokes. Unfortunately we still have no clue by the end of Peachy Flippin’ Keen.

It’s not that the book is a cliffhanger. It’s not. But it’s not a complete story either. It’s more like the first eight chapters of the next full-length title, Ain’t She a Peach, which is scheduled for release on June 12th. My recommendation is to wait until June to read this one so you can finish Frankie and Eric’s story without the wait.

My Rating: C+ Liked It, but I had issues

After reading some great reviews on earlier additions to this series and experiencing my first book by the author a short while ago, I decided to take the plunge into Lake Sackett, the McCready family, and all the fun smalltown living can bring.

Peachy Flippin Keen follows after book one. I hadn't read the earlier books, but this novella actually worked great. It's not a standalone story, but it works well as a first read to the series. Here, let me unconfuse you... It introduces the players and the setting to the series and the next novel-length book about Frankie McCready and Eric Linden. There are a few plot threads with a little resolution, but its very obviously just an intro and not a complete story on its own.

I had a good time with this one though at first I thought my antipathy toward the snarly Frankie was going to get in my way. Frankie has a cynical outlook and comes across as rather spoiled- and, to herself, she'll admit that she is. She lives at home with a doting set of parents and the family cabin is nestled among the rest of the family. She has a job she loves working in the funeral home side of the family run funeral home and bait shop along the lake and she has part-time work as the County Coroner.

The story gets rolling when Frankie encounters the new sheriff, Eric Linden, and discovers that he's the guy she had a one night stand with and did a grab her clothes and run in the middle of the night because she was terrified when she caught feelings since she prefers the hit it and quit it method.

The sheriff is none too impressed with one Frankie McCready. And, this is when I started to have fun. Frankie is doing all the narration so not once are Eric's thoughts revealed though she thinks she has him pegged. This was the moment that through family and friends observations of the way she bristles up and gets snarly around the sheriff that she likes him, but doesn't like the fact that she can't use her usual ways (favors from family and friends and knowledge of her small town giving her an advantage) to get her way. He's a by the book, solid law man and she likes to cut corners and do whatever it takes. They butt heads and she is in denial that there are any sparks there.

There's an accidental death on the lake that has them working together and there are several acts of vandalism to McCready family businesses to keep everyone busy. This shorter piece ends at a good point leaving the reader ready for more hijinks from Lake Sackett and ready to see what comes next between Frankie and Eric.

The humor, small town quirky charm, and plotting were utterly engaging and I can't wait to dive into Ain't She a Peach as well as go back for the earlier stories with Frankie's cousins. Definitely recommended.

I rec'd this book from NetGalley to read in exchange for an honest review.

Despite my having a TBR that is taller than I am, I couldn’t wait to dive into this book. Frankie is the undertaker for the McCready Funeral Home and Bait Shop in little Lake Sackett, as well as the county coroner. After surviving childhood leukemia, she spends her days living life exactly as she chooses: novelty t-shirts, inappropriate footwear, rabid loyalty to family and a determination to give every client in her downstairs office the best treatment possible. She’s also determined to live life on her own terms, which is why she travels to Atlanta to ‘let loose’ away from prying eyes. But, her last trip somehow followed her home in the form of the new police chief, a man she thought was left in Atlanta.

As if having him here isn’t enough to cause her grief, his disbelief at her qualifications and his inability to interact with any sort of ‘human feeling’ she’s also got Jared Lewis causing trouble. Son of the county manager, he’s yet to ever receive any punishment and she’s going to remedy that. From having the ‘real’ impressions of Jared, which she shares with his parents “when Jared eventually gets caught doing something awful that lands him in a cell with a roommate named Big Larry, I want you to remember something. People blame the mother for a reason.” She could now honestly tell her family she’d tried.

If you are a fan of Molly Harper – you’ll love Frankie – she’s gutsy, funny as hell and totally lovable – even in her most prickly moments. From her laughing at her mother and her “Disney Princess” approach to anger, to her quiet menace as she quietly explains “Mama always said that if you can’t say anything nice, it’s best to just smile until the murderous urges go away….Well, she doesn’t say it often, Ike. That’s how you end up with witnesses.” She’s also one of those people whose compliments, while well-intentioned are always funny, and her reactions are almost better.

“Frankie tilted her head and stared at Landry for a moment, as if she’d just watched a turtle play Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony on a harmonica.” HOW can you not love that?

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I love this series and these characters. Unfortunately, all of this can really go before the next actual book in this series and really didn't need to be a .5 as this basically sets up that story. I'm glad that I got to experience these characters again, but this felt unfinished by the end.

4 ½ stars for the series. A nice escape - being in a small town for a while.

This review is for all four books.

I’ve read two Molly Harper books in the past and was not wowed enough to buy more. They were both told in 1st person. But when I saw this new series being told in 3rd person I thought I’d try it. And yes, I really enjoyed it. Why is it that I feel like I can relax and enjoy a 3rd person book, but 1st person seems stressful?

The setting is a small lakeside town in Georgia. There is a romantic relationship in each book, but there is more of an emphasis on the town and things happening to various characters than on romance. I liked the way this was done.

You can read each book as a stand-alone except for Book 1.5. That book is the beginning of Book 2. You will be unhappy if you read 1.5 without continuing on to 2. But you can read Book 2 without 1.5.

In the first three books there were no sex scene details, but maybe a few references to “staying the night.” The fourth book had two sex scenes, briefly described, no body parts named.

Book #0.5 Save a Truck, Ride a Redneck - 3 stars
novella, 136 pages
Carl the auto mechanic and Marianne who recently graduated college with plans to go to law school. Nice story but I wanted more relationship development.

Book #1 Sweet Tea and Sympathy - 4 ½ stars
307 pages
Margot lost her job as an event planner in Chicago. She comes to Lake Sackett for a while at the request of relatives. She meets her biological father Stan and Kyle the elementary school principal.

Book #1.5 Peachy Flippin’ Keen - 3 stars
novella 75 pages
Frankie the female coroner and funeral home director meets Eric the new sheriff, formerly a cop in Atlanta. Someone has been playing mean pranks and vandalizing the family business - funeral home and bait shop. When I read this I was angry at the way the story stopped. But I soon learned this is the first chapter for the next book #2. So plan to read them together.

Book #2 Ain’t She a Peach - 4 ½ stars
304 pages
Continuation of the story about Frankie, Eric, and the vandalizing of the funeral home - and other things going on in town.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Amanda Ronconi narrated all four of these, and she did a fine job. I think she changed the way she does voices, since she was not good in a couple other books that I listened to.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Swearing language: mild and rarely used. I think the f word was used once. Sexual content: mild. Setting: current day Lake Sackett, Georgia. Copyright: 2017 and 2018. Genre: womens fiction with romance.

Peachy Flippin’ Keen was a quick but highly entertaining novella in Molly Harper’s Southern Eclectic series where we got to know Frankie McCready, the local coroner, a whole lot better. With her funky fashion sense and abundance of sassy wit, she was one heroine I fell for right away.

Although this can be read as a standalone, Peachy Flippin’ Keen is the continuing story of the McCreadys in Lake Sackett, Georgia. A quirky family who combined two unlikely businesses in one location: the McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop, and who pretty much all live on one piece of land they call “the compound”. Leave it to Molly Harper to create a group of likeable Southern rednecks who love each other as fiercely as they bicker and argue. And I loved every single amusing moment of our time with them. I received this book for free from NetGalley for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

It's taken me a bit to get used to the locale and its unique characters but I'm enjoying the Southern Eclectic series.    This short novella focuses on Frankie McCready, the town coroner.

I was just confused by Peachy Flippin' Keen. It is a setup of a situation, and it reads well.  We get to see some of the characters from the rest of the series.  It is, however, just the foundation, with the story barely started. There is really no romance or mystery concluded.

At first, I thought it was about 200 pages, and with the next one, Ain't She A Peach being just over 300, I knew a romance couldn't be over 500 pages. But this is only 92 pages. And I started the next, since it is also Frankie's book, and there are portions of setup repeated which seem the same.

I enjoyed this novella. I love Molly Harper. Honesty though, I think Peachy Flippin' Keen and Ain't She a Peach should be one book. The rest of the story will be released June 12 and I'll be reviewing it also.

My Review:
Okay, this is going to be a short review because this is a short novella. And honestly you should know going into it that none of the story lines are resolved within this book. That looks like it will happen in the full length novel that comes out next.

What this novella does do though is give a good intro to the two main characters and exactly why there is conflict between them. While I'm sure the full length novel will give a briefer overview of that, this story was good for a Molly Harper fix while we wait and to whet your appetite for the next story.

I'm definitely looking forward to it. I'm really enjoying this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Harper’s books call to me on a level that I cannot ignore and definitely cannot deny. This particular series isn’t as long or evolved as Harper’s paranormal romances but her ability to make me laugh hasn’t dulled any. Franky is a cute character and Eric needs more story devoted to him because there’s potential in there, but the overall continuation of the story is interesting and, like I said, funny as hell. There is only one issue with the book and that is it is short. It is a novella and I expected that but it feels a little unfinished.

I read the Molly Harper novella as a precursor to her latest novel, which releases next week and for which I do have an electronic review copy. I flew threw this brief audiobook, entertained the entire time, and cannot wait to get to that review copy. If the novella is any indication, that next book is going to be so much fun.

I love how salty Frankie is, she makes me laugh. I'm glad that her family gets her and at their efforts to reign her in. I think Frankie is right on who's behind the pranks and can't wait to see her catch them. I'm intrigued with the situation with the new Sheriff and look forward to seeing how that resolves. In the meantime their verbal battles are fun.

I'm a diehard MH fan! Just needed to get that out. But I've never experienced this with any of MH's books before, far as I can remember, but this novella was not complete. Usually there's a resolution (even in novellas) but this one, which I didn't realize until I was done with it, was a set-up for the next book. However, in spite of all of the above, you'll get the same awesome sarcasm, laugh-out-loud scenes, wonderful characters (even the bad guys), and a great setting. I really dislike cliffhangers, and this felt like one, so from now until the next book releases, I'll be sitting here wondering what the heck is going on with Frankie and the gang in Lake Sackett.

I loved this novella in the "Southern Eclectic" series. As I suspected, I still want to live in this little Southern lake town. I love that this book is told from Frankie's perspective. if I could go back in time and do over my life properly, I would be Frankie. She's young and deeply invested in her career as a mortician. She's confident and has a big, warm heart, but no lack of sarcastic judgment for those who deserve it.

What do you do when a one night stand from a vacation, turns up as the new sheriff in your small town hometown? This is what happens to Frankie McCready in Peachy Flippin’ Keen by Molly Harper.

Frankie’s family owns a lot of businesses that are connected to each other. Businesses that shouldn’t necessarily have any connection to each other. Frankie is the town coroner. The funeral home that she works in is connected to a bait shop and a small eatery. She has been the town coroner for a small amount of time, but she does a good job.

The McCready businesses have been experiencing small pranks lately, and being that it is the busy season, they are having customer issues. Frankie is determined to find the culprit. She is sure that she knows who it is, but she wants to investigate before she calls the person out.

Sherriff Eric Linden shows up and sort of offsets Frankie. It is funny when they both realize who each other are. The animosity that comes from their connected past is great. Eric is very put off because Frankie snuck away after a one night stand. But can you blame the girl for not being clingy?

I liked the book. I wish that there was more to it though. I do understand that this was just sort of an addition from two previous books and to sort of give a prequel to Frankie’s full-length novel. I would be interested in reading the full length novel. I want to see what happens between Frankie and Eric. And I am also interested in seeing what happens with the prankster.

Four stars

I don’t know how anyone could read Peachy Flippin’ Keen without already having a copy of Ain’t She a Peach since it leaves you hanging and thankfully I had review copies of both. 🙂

Molly Harper takes us back to that crazy town by the lake, Lake Sackett, Georgia and the McCready Clan to spend time with Frankie McCready. Frankie was my favorite character of this series, even over Tootie, and I was excited to see that her book was next.

In Peachy Flippin Keen, which is a novella Molly put out back in April, We are introduced to the new Sheriff in Town, Eric Linden, as well as Frankie’s nemises, Jared Lewis, a local teen who has been trying to get into Frankie’s morgue for a peek at the dead people. Frankie and the new Sheriff aren’t seeing eye to eye and that might be because he doesn’t like the way Frankie dresses or the odd colors of her hair, or the fact that he is embarrassed because Frankie know that he can’t stand the sight of dead bodies. But when someone keeps trying to break in, Frankie just knows it has to be Jared, she just has to get Eric to trust her.

Reading this novella without a copy of the next books, will just make you crazy since it leaves you wanting answers: Is Frankie right? Why does the Sheriff treat her so badly? What is going on in this crazy town? So make sure you have both books before getting started.

In Ain’t She Sweet, we get more information about Eric and why he has come to the small town of Lake Sackett. We also get to really know Frankie and while she appears to be full of self-confidence, we see how she allows her parents to baby her almost to make up for all the years they thought she would die young from the Leukemia. She wants to move out and grow up, but her parents make her feel guilty so she is stuck in a little girl’s room, living a little girl’s life. And we see that her choice of clothes and hair allow her to take control of the stares she always received around town as the little girl who was dying. As the story goes on, we see that Frankie’s self-confidence is a fascade. That part disappointed me since I liked Frankie’s self-confidence and I-don’t-care attitude and to learn it was all fake was a let down.

This is a crazy family and you just don’t know what is coming next but since Molly Harper is involved, it will surly give you a laugh.
