Air Marshal Mohammad Asghar Khan was the Pakistan air force's first native commander. Entering politics after a storied tenure, Khan became one of the country's most prominent proponents of democratic rule. His works largely document Pakistan's drift towards military dictatorship and his own ultimately unsuccessful political struggle.
Politics is grim business in Pakistan,a spell in jail is almost mandatory for the top politicians, alongwith the risk of being assassinated. But this book,a slim volume, presents the lighter side of the power game.
This book is a fair bit of fun.Air Marshal Asghar Khan, former chief of the PAF,had ambitions to become a politician. Those ambitions were not realized but he was sent to prison by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.Asghar Khan still found something to smile about remembering those times and the trials and tribulations of his political life,as life in jail became increasingly difficult.
Interesting anecdotes from a bygone era, including those from his air force days and about Ayub Khan, the former military ruler. The Shah of Iran also makes an appearance. He also talks about political rioters in Karachi and flying a plane all the way to the US for training there,in those early days.
Though a former military man himself,Asghar Khan was against military rule.He was supposedly a clean politician, and his political career didn't amount to much.Ironically,Bhutto who had sent him to prison, would himself wind up in a death cell, on his way to the gallows.
A limited release from the 1980s,this book would be hard to find.Made me smile,it was a slim volume,I was left wanting more.
