Who Was Doing The Chasing?
This is a difficult book for me to review because I didn't like the main characters, Alexa Stevens and Graham Ryan. Alexa Stevens is an interracial, business owner, a supposedly strong woman. Graham Ryan is a very arrogant businessman who, for the most part, only has one night stands with women.
The story opens with Alexa and Graham in bed after a one night stand. Apparently, this was their agreement - sex only. Alexa wakes and has no idea where she is and once she remembers and sees him, she says "Why can't you disappear in a puff of smoke?" She showers, get dressed and prepared to leave. Graham insists on driving her, so she agreed but leaves while he's in the shower. At this point, Graham is indignant because Alexa stole his thunder. She did to him what he was used to doing to women.
They didn't even know each other's real names. He thinks she's Lola and she thinks he's Ryan. So when they meet later in Austin for business, they're both shocked. He owns the building where she's expanding her business. For her, she wants to forget that night and concentrate on business. For him, it's game on.
The book continues in this vein. She's not interested in a relationship with him but is very attracted to him - you could say she's weak for him. Is he really attracted to her or is a matter of pride?
Enters a third character, a British man, Adam, whom she had an affair with while in London. Once she returns to the USA, she's done with him. However, he continues to call her and finds a way to come to Austin for business for a couple of months. She goes back and forth between Graham and Adam.
There is so much drama between them, it gets ridiculous even though she's Graham friend and decides to give Adam a real chance. Graham hates her being with Adam and let's her know that she really wants him. Adam hates Graham and decides he's the only impediment to him having Alexa. Alexa often sees Graham with other women and inadvertently hires one of his women, Trista, who still wants Graham. After seeing him with Trista, Alexa is furious's and causes a scene. She realizes that Graham was using Trista, so she calls Trista, apologizing for the drama and tells that she still wants her come to work. That's one of the misunderstandings that she and Graham has.
This goes on and on. Both of their family and friends gets in invovled and take sides. They both had lots of friends who very outspoken about who they should be with. Hers are either team Graham or team Adam. For some reason, most of her friends and family went from disliking Graham, because he was a manwhore, to thinking he was the love of her life. How Adam, who appears to truly love her, becomes a cray-cray who stalks her. She finally gets a protective order against him. He calls her at her job and she reports him to the police and he disappears from the book. I blame the author for completely changing his character making him the bad guy. By this point, I disliked everyone in the book and just wanted it to be over for I had a severe case of whiplash. I agree with one reviewer that this is the most "unromantic" romance that I've ever read.
Graham and Alexa deserved each other and the book quickly ends. Yes, the Epilogue ends in a HEA.
