There’s a lotta mystery in this history. Strange details. Riddles. Tests. References. How on earth is this to show me a teaching? Or correct, reprove, or train me for righteousness? Of endless interest though that’s for sure.

The Book of the Judges who ruled Israel after the death of Joshua. These included:

- Gideon who God used with 300 men to deliver the children of Israel out of the hand of the Moabits,
- Jepthah who made a vow to God and sacrificed his daughter after defeating his enemies;
- and of course Sampson, the strongest man who ever lived with the assistance of the Holy Spirit. He was deceived twice by women. First, by his Philistine wife who revealed the riddle to her people and then Delilah who handed him over to the Philistines when he revealed to her the source of his strength.

Judges is a very exciting book, the judges did great exploit, there was also the story of Micah and his Priest who was taken by the people of Dan. Also the wickedness of the people of Gibeah (of Benjamine) which lead to them being cut off from the tribe. I really enjoy reading this book of the Bible so much to learn.

Bless the name of Jesus!

A book about life without God. The tribes followed rulers but did evil or followed their own ways when there was no ruler. This is a book about appearances. The people appeared to follow God and be His people. They cried to God when suffering or oppressed. But their hearts were unchanged and they didn't fear God or follow His ways like King David. They weren't transformed by belief in God or a reverential fear of God. They chose their own ways like most people do today.

God's Word of course is high quality. Other thoughts: Samson was a fool. but God still used him. That gives the rest of us hope despite all our flaws. It is amazing the patience God has when you consider what various Hebrews were doing as recorded. I am thankfulfor God's patience.

Terribly Sad book of all the craziness that was the world of that time. Yet also some cool people who rose up to do what was right!

Reading this book as an American and a Christian in 2022 I think about statements like "They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways" and think we as a nation and a people are just like the Israelites. And so God is testing us. And it seems overall we are failing and bringing judgment upon ourselves. Yet God is good, and fair, and right, even as He allows them to have to endure wars and consequences of their sin and idolatrous lifestyles. God still sets up leaders and gives us periods of peace. He gives us opportunity after opportunity while there is still time to repent and turn back to Him.

I like the story about Ehud and the one about Deborah. I always like reading about Gideon and how God used such simple things to bring people to victory.

I wrote down Judges 10:15 and underlined how that verse ends.
"But the Israelites said to the Lord, 'We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.' Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And He could bear Israel's misery no longer."

And I am going to have to reread and study and pray and ask God to help me understand more about the Ehud story and judges 17-19 and maybe even more.

Truly shows that no one is perfect, but that doesn't stop God!
