Hugh DeLuca wants to settle down and start a family. But the only woman he wants—the one he can’t get out of his mind—doesn’t seem the family type.
She’s Christine Hart, a tough-as-nails police detective, and she happens to be investigating a mob murder at one of his construction sites.
As Chris’s feelings for him start to show, Hugh struggles to keep his distance. He’s afraid the savvy cop will break his heart, that she’ll choose her career over him—or worse yet, her deadly job will take her away forever.
Little does he know, he’s the one who will break her heart…and turn the murder investigation upside down.

Damn, I want to say that I enjoyed this book as much as book one but sadly this fell a bit short. I feel like we get this big mobster execution murder from like thirty years ago, we get all the mystery, muss and fuss pertaining to the investigation and then BAM...its over! Nothing big happened, nothing exciting, just arrests after the FBI handed over the murderers information to local police, something they were blatantly sitting on for who knows how long. Huge buildup...minimal excitement...no blowout! I'm so disappointed!
Hugh and Chrissy were pretty boring compared to Finn and Mel. Hugh acted more like a jackass than anything else, interfering in Chrissy's job like he has every right. She was a cop way before he even met her and by all accounts a very good one and then he comes along and gets all pissy because of her dangerous job and tries to basically sabotage her career. That's not love, its selfishness and I'm glad his sisters set him straight. Men can be so obtuse. Chrissy was pretty tame for a supposedly tough as nails cop, still she did her job and didn't lose focus.
I hate that we don't get to find out what happened with the pregnant wife, does she live or die? Does she get to have her baby? What happens to the baby? She wasn't an integral part of the story but they made her a somewhat important figure towards the end so it would have been nice to know what eventually becomes of her.
Overall it was an okay read, wasn't thrilled with it, didn't love it but I will not give up on this series as I'm looking forward to reading Izzy and Janey's story!
We're introduced to Chrissy and Hugh in book 1, and I was eager to read their story. Chrissy came off as a tough detective in book 1, and it was so awesome to see her soft side with Hugh. Make no mistake, this career driven female will bow down to no one, but when forced with a choice between love and her career, she feels she has made the worst decision of her life. She's come a long way success wise, but knows Hugh and her have a connection on a very deep level. I loved how caring and considerate Hugh was, but at the same time was very territorial of Chrissy. This book is a great continuation of the DeLuca family, and again has displayed some fantastic action, and truly great writing talents by this author. I feel like I want to be friends with the Deluca family-they love fiercely and protect the same, and I appreciated how easy it was to connect with the characters again.- By Victoria
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, pain, twists & turns, suspense, and heartbreak.
Before reading this story please read the below books first Watch Over (The DeLuca Family Book 1)
This is Christine and Hugh’s story. Christine is a police detective that takes her job very seriously. She is investigating a mob murder at Hugh’s construction site. Hugh wants Christine but he is really to settle down and have a family and does not think she is ready for that. As the investigation unfolds heart will be broken and some might not make it out alive do these two have a future or is her deadly job about to take everything away from them?
I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I liked the first book in the series (Watch Over), this one, for me, lack the charm of the first one.
Oldest brother of the DeLuca family likes his younger brothers partner. And she likes him. He is afraid her new case will be to dangerous.
The romance... was a bit to fast and easy... in my opinion. I like when people have to struggle a bit, to get together. I didn't like the characters, the didn't stand out and weren't that memorable.
I wish there was more to the story. I would love to know a bit more about characters.
Review for Safe Guard by Amy Reece. Review by Jen M.
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Safe Guard was a delight to read. You were able to see into the souls of Hugh and Chrissy, and the love they had for each other. The importance of family and truth.
While Safe Guard was a good book it did lack the suspense in the plot that Watch Over book one of the series had.
I am loving this series so much!!! The DeLuca family is amazing and have so much potential for sexy stories, I am buzzing with anticipation!! This is Hugh's story. He's the oldest of all siblings and a protector. He's been crushing on Chrissy, his brother Finn's partner for some time now but having had a bad relationship is wary of taking the big step. Chrissy is a detective, woman in a man's world and basically a badass. When her long time crush Hugh finally opens up the bridge, their a relationship develops from their friendship. Their relationship is slow, careful yet deep. Both have some hard truths to face yet their feelings guide them over. This story was real and fun with a little bit of suspense. I am absolutely loving the DeLuca siblings and Chrissy is a perfect addition to this family. Waiting for more stories... *~*~*ARC generously provided by the author in exchange of an honest review *~*~*
Another 3 star DeLuca book, but more rounded up to 3, rather than not rounded up to 4. I.e. not as good as the first one.
Hugh (H) runs the family construction business. Chris (h) is his younger brother's partner in the State Police. Their lives cross professionally when bodies are uncovered at one of his job sites. Tension has been simmering between them since they met in book 1 (Watch Over), but can a real relationship survive the realities of their jobs?
I liked the leads, but - full disclosure - I had a large section of the book where I was just mad at Hugh. He had some Grade A alpha-hole action going on. She has busted her butt in a male-dominated field to achieve what she has. Yes, it's a new situation for him, especially seeing a discrete threat instead of the general concept, but she's good at her job and is proud of it. He goes caveman protective on her and meddles big time in her case and her career. It was condescending and arrogant and chauvinistic and a jerk move, and I was proud of Chris for sticking to her guns (literally) about her career.
That being said, I was really glad at how they worked it out. HE ACTUALLY SEEKS HELP!! Yay for normalizing counseling and therapy, especially in alpha types!!!! Life is hard, and sometimes we need a professional to sort through it.
However, there were some things that I wasn't as fond of.
The Lauren issue. It just felt half-done and unsatisfying as a plot device - stirring up emotions and painting characters in different (yet potentially unwarranted) lights without actually doing it justice.
But in general this title seemed to touch on a number of things without digging into them, like it was trying to stuff too much into the story so nothing got sufficient treatment. The romance is a bit too simple - basically they both like each other a lot, but he's nervous about her job safety and so he meddles. Though I did love Hugh making efforts - his baby steps - at growing into being a good partner for her, I didn't see Chris changing all that much though, which is always a little disappointing for me. I like seeing both leads grow with their relationship - personal preference. The suspense and mystery was cursory at best. Lots of threads but none really gone into much. Seriously, the first book (with the world's most obvious villain) had more suspense. Basically, for a romantic suspense, there was little meat to either the romance or the suspense.
Alternating 3rd person POV. No cheating, no love triangles, no OW/OM drama. What could have been a meatier story felt very simple and superficial - suspense lite? Still, the H had some great growth efforts, and it was nice seeing an alpha try to deal with his emotions instead of the h just accommodating the caveman antics. Fairly clean, not explicit - more 'behind closed doors' without being heavy-handedly obvious about it. HEA and short term epilogue. No cliffhangers.
Would I read more? Yes, I've picked up all 4 in the series as they've been free on Kindle at one point or another. While not an absolute favorite series, there's a lot I like and they make for easy escapism reads.
3.5 Stars Safe Guard is the continuation of the DeLuca family novels. Here we follow Hugh and Chrissy's story. Hugh is the eldest and understandably the over-protective type having 5 younger siblings. These are traits that run deep in all the DeLuca men but especially in Hugh. He met Chrissy when his brother Finn was laid up in hospital with a broken leg and has felt drawn to her ever since. These feelings however are in no way one sided and Chrissy cannot resist the tall good looking DeLuca male who turns her whole body to jelly with one glance.
For me this is a very fast paced book. The passage of time moves rather quickly as does Hugh and Chrissy's relationship. You can tell both are playing their cards very close to their chests as both have been let down in the past, although both have an optimistic outlook on life. The story is sweet and easy to follow, there could have been a bit more details given about certain characters, and a few lose ends could have been tied up before the end, but all in all I enjoyed the story.
I was surprised at the turn taken by Hugh and his sudden problem with Chrissy's job. It is understandable that there would be a certain amount of trepidation on his part given the dangerous nature of being in law enforcement, however Hugh takes a giant leap into irrational territory, and acts like a complete jerk. He never seemed to have a problem with Chrissy's job before and that should never change. To Hugh, his intention were good and came from the heart, but we all know what road was paved with good intentions.
Chrissy is a strong independent woman who is used to looking after herself and therefore is outraged by some of the actions that Hugh takes. She will not be controlled by anybody.
I was provided an ARC of this novel to provide an honest review
I really loved the first book in the Deluca family but only liked Safe Guard I couldn't really get into it but over all I did enjoy some parts . Was looking forward to Chis and Hugh's story from the way they would look at one another in Watch Over if you haven't read it I suggest that you do but it can be read as a standalone . I respect the fact that Chrissy or chris is a detective she's just awesome good at her job doesn't back down from challenges great heroine . Hugh is a likable hero but at times he did frustrate me but I realized he did try , adore his dog that's another thing I love about these books the animal aspect . They made a great couple Chrissy and Hugh shared a attraction that they fought but couldn't resist for long . Love the family and how much they care about one another can't wait to read more about them the banter and love that the DeLuca family is just amazing need more of them . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero = 8 heroine = 9 secondary characters = 10 Chemistry = 9 steam =5 romance = 7 humor = 5 darkness level = 3 enjoyment = 8 angst = 3 action = 3 mystery = 3 story line = 8 Story ending = 8 character development = 9 pacing = 9 Plot = 9 cover = stars = author = 8 would I recommend this book = yes would I re read this book = yes would I read future books by this author = yes
Safe Guard is the second novel in The DeLuca Family Series and so far my favorite. I really enjoyed Amy Reece’s first book in the series, Watch Over, but Hugh stole his little brother Finn’s thunder.
I wish all men were like Hugh. He was so protective, attentive, and just plain devoted to his Chrissy. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his girl. I honestly think he’d walk over hot coals while chewing glass if that’s what it would take to make Christine Hart happy. He was so strong yet vulnerable. He manned up to his mistakes and took care of them. Hugh just never gave up. I loved him.
Detective Christine “Chris” or “Chrissy” Hart was likable as well. She and Hugh circled each other in the previous novel but Safe Guard can still be read as a standalone. Chrissy was a strong female character who I couldn’t find any fault with. She stood up for herself but wasn’t extreme and she definitely wasn’t a doormat. Amy Reece did an excellent job balancing her personality- the female who succeeded in a male dominated profession while yet still feminine. I think her and Hugh complimented each other well and really worked toward a mature healthy relationship. They were just too adorable for words.
The story just flowed and read so easily that I knocked out over half of the book before I even knew it. It was just extremely well written. I think this will be one of my top picks in Romantic Suspense for the year. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
This is the second book in The DeLuca Family, which is Hugh's story. He's the oldest sibling who has strong protective instincts. Hugh has a thing for Chrissy, his brother Finn's partner, and finally acts on it. And Chrissy has had a crush on him for a while, so they embark on a relationship. All is going well, until Chrissy and Finn's new case puts them in danger. Hugh starts to become to protective, even putting her job on the line, and Chrissy isn't happy at all. He finally decides he will learn how to deal with her job, but will she forgive him? Safe Guard is a great story that gave me closure on Watch Over, so I'm very happy about that. Hugh and Chrissy were another great couple that I loved like crazy, even when Hugh went overboard with his protection. And Chrissy is a bad a** female in her field, which is predominately male, so I was girl crushing on her like crazy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these DeLuca's so much, as they all make up the entertaining cast of secondaries that kept me laughing hard, and CANNOT WAIT for the rest of their stories! Plus, the mystery surrounding this story kept me on the edge of my seat. And while I still have questions with this one, I'm hoping that the next book will put those to bed as well! I'm LOVING Amy Reece's talented writing style a lot, and I see a new addiction for the future, so it stands to reason that I'm going to be waiting for the next book in a state of impatience! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
**ARC RECEIVED IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW** I really enjoyed the first book in the series and had quite high expectations for this one. I felt like it started really well, the characters' realtionship was moving along, the 30 year old murder investigation was building the tension and I was totally caught up in the story. So much so that at one point I stopped reading and put it down for the night becuase I thought something bad was going to happen and I didn't want to know.
Of course I picked it right back up the next morning however I feel like the second half didn't grab me as much. Hugh was acting like a chauvanist jerk and his "solution" was a cop out. That he would have that much $$ also seemed out of place. Having said that I liked that everyone told him to get his act together, that Chris didn't let him walk all over her and that his sisters gave him a practical solution that more people should feel able to take up in real life. The action all did seem to resolve a bit too quickly though.
In the end I LOVE the DeLuca family and I really want to know the back story to Izzy and Janey especially so I will definitely be following the series. If you are after a fun, light read where you can get invested in the whole family of characters and follow their development through the series (even though they will still work as stand alone books) then this is for you.
Amy Reece was new to me when I signed up for Watch Over, book one in this suspenseful new series. I love a good book that keeps me guessing, on my toes and the edge of my seat and Reece nailed all of those with this latest standalone novel.
Safe Guard was so freaking good! A sexy, suspenseful, twisted, fast-paced, dangerous, and intense romance... these two had me hooked by the end of the very first chapter. Christine "Chris" and Hugh were magnificently penned, giving me that slight push and pull (or angst) I like in my books while having me fall hard and fast, just like both of them.
She is a fierce police detective and she is also the one to capture his heart. He wants it all and he wants it with her. But danger is lurking, heartbreak is looming, and roadblocks are imminent. It's gonna get complicated and messy but Chris and Hugh are so worth it in every way.
Swoon swoon swoon! I floved little brother Hugh! He definitely stole the show!
If you like your books a little easier but with huge splashes of danger, steam, and suspense then the DeLucas are for totally for you!
This book was all about second, third and even fourth chances for its characters to get their love and personal lives together. The main character had a major flaw in his character of over-protectiveness, which extended to not only his immediate family, but also to the people he loved, which of course caused nothing but problems. It also had a detective storyline going through it as two of its characters were state police detectives. I liked how Amy Reece develops her characters and intertwines their lives so seamlessly, while at the same time making you cringe or cry with the results. I will definitely be going back and reading the first book in the DeLuca family series, Watch Over, for further enjoyment. This was a voluntary review in exchange of a free copy of the book.
I have fallen in love with this series. It has everything I love about a romance book. There is love, murder and mystery, and most of all a sexy alpha man that you instantly fall in love with. Hugh DeLuca is one fine specimen of a man. Once I started on Hugh and Chrissy's story, I could not put it down. I felt that this book was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, and I was especially happy to see Hugh and Chrissy get the HEA they deserved. It was a whirl wind romance that left me all tingly inside. I highly recommend this book to romance readers. You will not be disappointed.
I'm so glad I discovered this author! Thoroughly enjoying the DeLuca family series! A hot, sexy, romance with a mix of mystery, action, and suspense, along with humor, heartbreak and angst make this a great read. Hugh and Chris, or Chrissy as Hugh calls her, are great together and after they get past fighting their attraction to each other they get their HEA. This story is just full of great characters and I love each member of the DeLuca family! Can't wait to read more of the big, loving, loyal, funny, DeLuca clan!
Not going to lie, this novel wasn't as good as the first book. It was more a relationship lesson than anything. We meet big brother Hugh in the first novel of the series. He is a mystery but it was clear he had a crush on Chrissy, Finn's partner. Chris is a tough bird, not because she is a detective but because she doesn't put up with crap. These two make perfect sense, however Hugh keeps screwing up the relationship. It's a little harder to get into their story. It lacks full enthusiasm.
This is the 2nd book in this amazing series, and is Hugh and Christine’s story. Christine is a tough police detective, and when she is called into one of Hugh’s construction sites, when a body is found, the chemistry between these two is smouldering. I really enjoyed this story, but it just did not grab me and enthral me like the 1st book in this series did, nevertheless, this is an enjoyable read. This author is one of my favourites, and I recommend her work for all readers. Great work Amy!
This was a great read with Chrissy and Hugh. It was great to learn more about both of these characters and I loved how strong Chrissy was and yet had a soft side for Hugh. At times I would of liked to strangle Hugh when he was being an overprotective male. The story was great with some action and lots of chemistry between the two and an HEA. Although this is the second in this series it can be read alone but the first book was great too!
I really enjoyed reading this novel. I was able to enjoy getting tangled in with the relationship of another DeLuca brother and his brother's partner on the force. There are lots of ups a downs, a sidecar ride-along mystery that is being investigated, and a few surprises along the way. No explicit scenes were written in this book...if anyone is romantically involved...it's just alluded to. I like how this author keeps it behind closed doors.
How could you not love the covert shy flirting between Hugh and Chrissy in the first book? I was excited to dive in and read this story. They are perfect for each other. Books that follow a family like this series is my weakness especially when each story is new and progressing forward. I liked that while he wanted to be a protector Hugh knew they Chrissy could hold her own. Bob the dog was the cutest. I really liked this book! On to the next.
I read this book because I read the first in the series and it was cute enough, but this one was not. There seemed to be a major plot point started that just…didn’t resolve? Or be a cliffhanger? And the two leads had some absurd lack of communication going on.
I have already read Finn and Mel's story and fell in love with the whole family. Hugh and Chrissy's story is no different. I loved it. I can't wait to read the rest of the brothers' stories. I just hope Seamus gets rid of the girl he is with ugh, she is awful.
This story has a lot of suspence, danger, and a little romance, keeping you turning the rages to read what happens next to the end, looking forward to reading more books from this author
Wow what a book. Hugh wants to settle down but only with Christine. She’s not easy to catch. Just loved this second book in the series. Received a free book.
