Velvet Lies #2

The Velvet Caress

Rate this book
When the final spank had slammed into her backside she was sobbing, but not with pain. Jen was so aroused she was literally crying with frustration. She kept saying 'please' over and over again, and I was pretty certain I knew what would wash the tears away.

When one lie is shattered, another begins.

My wife is on her deathbed and I’ve barely been married a day. The poison she took was meant for me. I should be the one lying in a hospital bed looking as though each moment might be my last. The guilt I feel is indescribable.

It’s a bit too late to realise I’m in love with Jennifer. I’ve screwed the poor girl over so many times she can barely stand to look at me. Every time I come near her she flinches, and I can hardly blame her. All I know is that I need to make this right. I owe her that much.

I used to be good at delivering the impossible, but this time I'm not so sure. The odds are not stacked in my favour.

Losing isn’t going to be an option, though. If I lose her, I lose everything...

Without interruption in the timeline, the storyline continues with the newlywed Jennifer Radcliff Matthews battling for her life due to a dose of poison. Shaken by the situation, Mark Matthews is concerned for his wife and will take all measures to find the culprit who seeks their demise. With guilt over his past behavior, Mark believes he deserves this turn of events and seeks penance in a place where he can atone and briefly forget about the consequences.

“The thing was, you couldn't take life for granted, it was precious and you had to savour each and every day you were given as if it were your last.”

With Mark standing firm with his decision with the need to be punished, he submits for one night to a Dominatrix despite his dominant nature. What occurs tests Mark’s threshold for physical and mental stimulation but it also gives him the reprieve he so desperately needs. Throughout his session, the methods used were deliciously erotic, quite edgy and tested Mark’s boundaries.

“I needed raw emotion, skin on skin contact, and a taste of something brutal. The dominant male had left the building, and all that remained was a shell of the man I once was. Would I always feel like this? I hoped not.”

As Jennifer recovers, it becomes clear there is a larger force at play regarding her family background. This knowledge adds to the ongoing plot points about Albrecht Stables and Michael’s Radcliff’s vengeful motivation but also creates questions about how it all happened. Though Mark has unlimited resources, it is difficult to find those he can trust and relies on a character who is eager to employ certain methods to make a traitor talk.

“Well, I don't actually know his name.” “You're fucking kidding me. Do I have complete twat tattooed across my forehead or something?”

With varying points of view, this narrative offers multiple and suspenseful intersecting plot points. Learning more about Jennifer’s background and her actions to protect Mark, she has evolved from a spoiled rich girl to a woman of substance. As for Mark, he is in a new position with loving feelings toward his wife but also acknowledges that he isn’t a vanilla saint. It isn’t a secret that Mark completely melts my panties and what occurs is kinky and combustible!

From the first page, I was completely enraptured by the storyline and how the circumstances continue to change in this ever evolving and ongoing plot. With suspenseful elements and stylistic writing, C.P. Mandara pushes carnal boundaries and keeps the reader wondering what is next. Needless to say, I cannot wait to see how it all unfolds in the next book.

The Velvet Caress would appeal to those who appreciate the exotic elements of kinkery and enjoy the tension of romantic suspense. I highly recommend!

3 'Mixed feelings' stars

You really need to have a great writing talent to be able to mix ponies, soap opera, and thriller without making it sound like a total mess. So, kudos for that!! Was this book well-written? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Sadly, not so much.

I was looking forward with sadistic glee in my eyes almost from the very start of this series to finally saw Mark brought down to his knees. Someone had to put this man in his place!! But in the end, his out of the blue sub session that took one-third of this book didn't really please me. I don't know, just wasn't feeling it *shrug* Then we had Leyland and Marianne part. I never liked Leyland so I didn't give a fuck about his POV; on the other hand, I was always fond of Marianne. I still think that her and Mark's scenes were the hottest in the series. I'm still dreaming about that special night in the club *fanning myself* However, she was kind of bland here and I don't care much if she and Leyland will become a thing. I have to admit, though, that Leyland brought some comic relief to the scene. This idiot is just asking for some feisty woman to bite his balls off LOLOLOL

Anyway, back to the story. The non-sexy-parts were deeply in crime novel territory. It's hard to keep up with who wants to kill who and it seems we're finally approaching the reveal of who's the biggest villain here. It might not even be daddy dearest because mommy dearest just made an appearance and let me say I'm intrigued. I'm tempted to place bets on who will come out of this alive *evil laugh*

I truly enjoyed the last 10% of the story. After two lengthy and disappointingly not very erotic tortures, there was some heath at last. I like Jen and Mark together but I'm not buying their love. They went from wanting to kill each other to giving life for each other in basically a matter of seconds, and it's not convincing at all. Yes, that kind of scenario can work in certain circumstances, I guess but it was not done well here. I think I liked them better in Albrecht stables because this newlyweds bliss doesn't suit them much.

I'll certainly read the last book because there are still a lot of questions I desperately want answers for. And I hope that book 3 will make up for the lack of hotness in this installment.

Genre: Erotica
Type: Book 2 of Velvet Lies series
POV: First Person – Multiple
Rating:

There was no wedded bliss for Mark Matthews and Jennifer (Jen) Redcliff. The ink on their wedding certificate barely dried when they had to face the first hurdle. With more secrets and lies along the way will they falter or grow stronger together?

A whip can break a man, but the pain could also reinvent him.

I've always love Mark's commanding personality. While he was he was stern, he was also flexible. And what he "sacrificed" to do in this book made me very happy and panting for more haha!

It was just my luck to have landed myself with one of the most challenging, independent and feisty women I had ever met.

Jen didn't appear as much in here but her character played a pivotal role in the direction of the series. I like how she could make light of things, but I also wanted to see more of her emotions/reactions when it came to certain revelation.

As for the storyline, as mentioned I love the part concerning Mark's needs and I also enjoyed the appearance of a character that I didn't think would have played such role in the story. There was barely any actual sex throughout the book but true to the author signature style, there were plenty of entertaining and creative ways to torture and pleasure both the characters and the readers.

How hard could that be? All we needed to do was talk. The trouble was, all we seemed to do was fuck, and whilst I didn't have a problem with that exactly, it didn't make a great basis for getting married.

The Velvet Caress continues Mark and Jen's journey in finding the truth behind their predicament while learning about each others at the same time. From the direction of this book, I'm looking forward to see what will come next in the series.

I'm currently re-reading/completing the Pony Tales series and I don't know why I only gave this four stars last time because I adored every moment of this book. It's a lot less steamy and erotic than the previous books though we do get one heck of a sensuous scene towards the end. The reason for the cooler feel is because this book really allows us to know and fall totally in lust love with Mark. Oh my word he totally and utterly earned his redemption here. I would have loved being a fly on the wall of Sophia's dungeon!

The story moves on at a good pace, with more intrigue thrown into the mix, more peril, a life-threatening danger for Mark, and an unexpected visitor. I adored Leyland, he wasn't quite the butt-hole I judged him to be in The Ties That Bind. We saw glimpses of a less bad man in The Velvet Chair but in this we see a man who is as devious as Mark, but who doesn't take himself as seriously. The scenes of him with Marianna were delightful and one day I'd rather like Ms Mandara to consider giving them a book of their own.

I utterly enjoyed every single word, line, paragraph and chapter. Totally recommend this series to those who enjoy BDSM accompanied by a good story and can't wait to read The Velvet Collar, though will be sad to have to say goodbye to Mark and Jennifer.

Even though it’s been a while since i read the previous books in this series,i had absolutely no problem picking up where i left off.
I was back into the story within minutes, kudos to Christina for making that happen.

Jen is very possibly dying from the poison she drank that was meant for Mark.
He is horrified by the events, but does everything in his power to make sure she survives.
After all,he loves his wife...if only he gets a chance to tell her that.
He’s going to atone for his sins while she’s fighting for her life, and it can’t hurt enough.
In the meantime the plot thickens and danger still lurks.....
A very entertaining part of the series,a series that i intend to finish.
Because i want to see those evil bastards get what they deserve.
And i want to see Mark and Jen get their hea.

If you have been a fan of Mark and Jennifer, since the Riding School Books like me, then this is a MUST read! The Velvet Caress is packed full of surprises involving both Jen and Mark. I enjoyed seeing what happens with some of the characters, like Marianna, from the last books. I never wanted to have to stop reading, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

The first book, The Velvet Chair, grabbed me from the beginning and I was so enthralled with the story, that I was excited to read the second book.
I had a hard time getting around Mark and how he goes off, while Jennifer is unconscious in the hospital, and I had to keep putting the book down, it annoyed me that much. I could not wrap my head around this.... sadly.
The story is a unique, totally unexpected tale. I recommend reading this series from the Pony Tales series forward.

A little too ott.

This review is for both books.

Okay, all I am going to say about this series is that I went into this not expecting anything since it's not the book cover that got me interested but the blurb. The story could have been an easy read but I guess the author wanted to drag on about Mark's redemption or was it, but in saying that, wtf Mark needed release *rolls eyes* because of his wife....seriously....that I kind of didn't care for, and the length of chapters let alone with Leylan's part it was more about the whodunnit and also Jennifer’s mum was a *omg* lol but everything comes together and understanding of how and why she married Mark.

Overall though, I do love their chemistry, Jennifer is just if not more fun to like and be annoyed at times but the story plot thickens and just keeps getting good and the BDSM is hot and kinkier.

The second book in the Velvet Lies series and it starts right where Velvet Chair ended. With the question did Jennifer survive???

The story is told from different points of view so you get the inside story from all the characters. I loved seeing how Mark finally admits his true feelings and the way he dealt with his pain and guilt.

Jennifer got her sassy side back and we find out a bit more about her background. I loved her and Mark together. There are still a lot of questions to be answered.

I couldn’t put this book down.

I really do like these characters. I looked at earlier books from the pony series that feature Mark and Jennifer, but it wasn't my thing. These, however, I enjoyed immensely. Pay heed to the warnings, though. This is not sugarkink in these novels.

I am quite... Disappointed and angry

I was hoping after the first book, I would get the H grovelling like hell and so long after what had happened to the h in the 1st book.

Wow it sure convenient for the H to decide he would undergo the pain punishment.
I don't like that it happened without the h participation in it. Too damn easy, idc his pain submission looks like hell. It still happened without the h, she didn't get to involve to see his humiliation and submission.

LOL I just love how the h easily acquiesce when she learned H told her the 3 words. All went rosy after, sure there were few hiccups but nooo she just roll on the floor, readily to please. I was expecting more from the h, alas.

God the disappointment.

Meh

Mark and Jennifer have been through so much to get to the point they're at. First, they dealt with Albrecht, then it's was Jennifer's evil and terrible step-father forcing them to marry. Mark started to get his own back on Jennifer for her father's plot but then realized that he loved her. Of course, he realized that just as Jennifer is dying.

This means that they are going to have to go through a lot more things, including estranged family members, murder plots, a coven of Dommes, and a whole lot of guilt.

Like any other CP Mandara book, this one is pretty intense. There is less sex going on in this one because of other things happening, but you still get trademark Mandara kink. I was exhilarated when I got to the end of the book because of the way it made me feel. I can't wait for the next one because I'm dying to know what's going to happen with all the plots and plans that are in motion. I know it's going to be great, since all of her books are.

The Velvet Caress, by C.P. Mandara.
When C.P. Mandara left her heroine Jennifer dying as a result of a misdirected poisoning in the first book of Velvet Lies, I wound up crying "no, no, no" just as it looked like she and her new husband Mark Matthews were finally coming to some understanding. I was so disturbed I wrote Christine and pleaded with her to reverse the action.

She told me a second book was on the way, and that all would be revealed. I bought it as soon as it became available, wondering how she was going to get her heroine out of her near-death condition.

She did it, but boy did she make her characters suffer. The Velvet Caress is a whale of a book, and writer Mandara outdid herself in the first few pages with a description of Jennifer's funeral--thank god, a fantasy in Mark's mind-- rather than a fact in life. After what Jennifer had been through in The Velvet Chair I just couldn't bear to learn of her actual death.

But that fantasy sets the scene for an ongoing adventure that shifts from one mess to another before it gets resolved in the most ingenious way. Jennifer and Mark are the perfect dominant/submissive couple.

The characters in this book, aside from Matthew and Jennifer, are fascinating. There is Jennifer's mother, a mystery woman with mafia connections; Leyland Forbes, a friendly enemy of Mark's; Marianna, a former sub to Mark who rats him out to Jennifer's father Redcliff and pays the penalty; and finally Redcliff himself, a villain's villain.

Every one of them is clearly drawn and memorable, and the book is so vivid in its descriptions, sex, BDSM and submission that I can't get it out of my head. That is really the mark of a successful novel for me, and WOW, there is a third book in the series in the works--The Velvet Collar. I simply can't wait for its release.

Christine Mandara is a brilliant writer who can take the reader from tear-jerking agony to laughter in the space of a few paragraphs! Very few authors can accomplish that feat. This series is a must read.

The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. I didn't know it was the second book in this series(velvet lies) or the eight one in the pony series, so didn't read the first books. I think it's wise to do so because this book starts after marriage and the poisening. What I understand the first book is about how they met. And it's nice to have some more backstory.
And the actual first books tell more about how she ended up where she is today.

It's quite a detailed book about his BDSM(being punished kink) life and it's not for the fainthearted.
I must say I'm impressed with how his journey in being dominated is discribed.
It's almost as if you're watching it happening while reading this.
You would think him being dominated makes him at least a switch and would have loved to see him being dominated by his wife. I'm a sucker for a strong femalr character. At least she's a sassy strong-willed character. But would have loved her also being a switch to make the bedroom escapades more challenging. Now he just wants her to be a submissive wife.

I had not read the first book in the series before reading this one. It would definitely be better to read them in order. However, even struggling to sort out what had happened before, this book was highly readable. It opens with newlywed Jennifer Radcliffe Matthews critically ill after being poisoned and husband Mark Mathews burning up with worry and guilt. A kinky BDSM dominant, he seeks to do penance by submitting himself to the attentions of some very scary dominatrixes. Meanwhile, in alternating scenes, Mark has another kinky dominant interrogating one of his employees whom he suspects knows who is behind the murder attempt. The BDSM scenes are intense. To make matters worse, Mark is framed for the attempted murder of his bride and lands in jail, where the danger is far more real. The book is well written and suspenseful, but might be over the top for some readers.

Jennifer and Mark have only been married a few days, and Jennifer is now unconscious after purposely ingesting a poison she was supposed to administer to her husband. Mark is confused, furious, guilty and heart-broken.

OMG! I love the way this author writes. She is able to use her incredible words to lure me into the paradox of Domination/submission as the story moves from Mark’s decision on how to handle his self-reproach to Leyland’s mission to deal with Mark’s former employee, who was paid to betray him.

I have NEVER read anything like this before. My stomach is in knots as if I can feel each person’s pain. My feelings are intense and frazzled. And the sexual interplay between the different characters is exciting, kinky, erotic, sometimes overwhelming, and for me quite surprising.

It is time for another lesson, but this time it is our hero who is learning new things. But will it be enough to save his wife, let alone their relationship?

This is book two of the series. It does okay as a standalone, but it will be much more enjoyable if read in order.

This is a dark erotic romance with surprising depth for both our hero and heroine. The story is well written and easy to read with plenty of dark and steamy content, exactly what one should expect from this author. The characters are well developed and quite intriguing. I enjoyed watching them grow and develop in this story, particularly our hero. The result was a highly enjoyable story and I am definitely looking forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

OMG!!! SPOILER ALERT

Holy moly!! I absolutely loved this second book as much as the first. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. It seems like we had to wait ages from book one to book two but it was so worth the wait. This continues straight off from the first one. Jennifer had ingested the poison meant for Mark and is rushed to hospital, Mark has realised he loves Jennifer and will do anything to atone his guilt. This book has some very Hot, sexy bdsm scenes not for the faint hearted. I can't wait for the next installment, I want Mark and Jennifer to get their revenge on Michael. Would also love to read about Leyland and explore the chemistry he had with Marianne.
Please put me out of my misery Ms Mandara and release the third book 🙏

Like C.P. Mandara can describe humiliating, sadistic, unexpected and cruel scenes and then make this look erotic, I think is a gift!!
I enjoy reading her books about Jennifer and Mark. And where Mark is always the one to do it to someone else, he's now the one who undergoes it to sort out his thoughts now that Jennifer is in the hospital from poisoning, not knowing if she can survive.

And then Leyland. A semi-rival of Mark who exercises his lust and tricks on Marianne to get information about who is behind the poisoning of Jennifer (which was actually intended for Mark)

A great book full of (BD)SM scenes that will make you hot and a continuous story of 2 great characters

This is CD Reiss at her best and focuses on Mark and Jennifer, but there is a lot dedicated to Leyland and Marianna and boy does she take a lot but the situation is not yet resolved and I hope she is helped. Mark willing submits to Sophia and the witches as a form of atonement but he is really innocent in all this. How he survived what he went through then and later is amazing and there were times I was cringing it was a little too much for me, but his interactions with Jennifer were very very hot. Jennifer found out some startling facts about her family and Mark and Jennifer come to an understanding about their future and acknowledge their feelings, book three should be spectacular.

Brimming with various erotic kinks, this is yet another great book for the international month celebration for masturbation. When it comes to super hawt naughty erotic fantasies, Ms. Mandara consistently delivers. This book should not be read as a standalone. It also should definitely not be read in public. This book is arousing and may cause a desperate need for "me-time".

Excellent story.
Book two of this series is just as dark and rather dangerous for Mark let’s just say he has a mother–in–law problems. This is Mark’s pov and he is coming to understand more about Jennifer her relationship with her stepfather. Now this one didn’t end in such a big cliffhanger but be sure the story is not ended. I have really become invested in Jennifer’s story I want there to be a happy ending but who knows what the author has planned. An excellent dark tale I hope you check this book in fact all the series is something you should not miss.

Another great book by CP Mandara who once again brings strong well developed characters and an intense story line. The author pulled me in and had me glued to the pages , reading as fast as I could to see what happened next. She paints her scenes in vivid detail helping to move the story fluidly. I'm looking forward to the next boo. Loved and recommend.

Mark shocks himself regarding Jen as she struggles for life. She has a surprise guest who is determined to find the one who brought harm to Jen. Count on Ms. Mandara to keep me in knots reading about Mark and Jennifer's first week or so of marriage.

Everything may not be as it seems, and meting out revenge or punishment, well…..

What Mark puts himself through! Or is it his fatigue driving dreams, visions...!

I don't want to say too much, but this series keeps me coming back for more.

Dark romance in an amazing series! Can't wait for The Velvet Collar!
