A Soul Full of Stars

Rate this book
Sonnet Cole wants nothing less than absolute poetic devastation at the hands of a broken heart. After all, how else will she know that hers is beating?

If you ask her best friend and tattoo artist Vaughn, however, he’ll tell you (with an eye roll) that she is far too caught up in her excessive dream world to ever fall in love in the first place. At 25 years old, Sonnet has curated a near-perfect life for herself: She owns an artistic salon right next door to her two best friends’ tattoo parlor, both of which harbor fantastically interesting clients. She lives in an adorable loft right in the middle of the city, she satisfies her love of poetry in her spoken word group, she lives for making her melancholy twin sister and mother of two laugh with stories of her “life of luxurious freedom.”

There is one very important thing missing from Sonnet’s life, though. She’s never been in love. More importantly, she’s never had a broken heart, and that’s what she craves most as a poet and as a human being.

And what better way to confirm that she is alive than to have her heart ripped from her chest?

But when Sonnet finally gets what she wants, well, we all know how that is going to end. Or do we?

Filled with steamy poetry, sex-positive tones, hilarious and beautiful friendships, loyal sisterhood, and (maybe) more than one epic love, A Soul Full of Stars will have those belly butterflies swarming.

You guys… I did it. I published my debut novel and I’m so excited to share it with you!

Almost every author I admire has had the same advice: write what you love. And that’s what I did.

I adore stories about close friendships and relationships between siblings, I love contemporary poetry, and books that give me feels and butterflies… and I always appreciate a bit of steam ;)

So, that’s what I wrote. I wrote what I love and I hope that maybe my fellow romance readers love it, too.

If you’d like a copy of the ebook in exchange for a review consideration, let me know :)

This was a really nice, easy read and a very cute romance novel. The novel has such an easy-going, yet poetic and descriptive writing style which allows the story to flow seamlessly across the pages. I loved the in-depth descriptions of all the small details, they added extra interest to the story and made it a very enjoyable read. All the little things in this story really stand out, and they come together wonderfully in the poetic narrative.

The characters in this novel are the absolute best. I don't normally focus very much on character names, but these ones suited the characters so well that I just had to stop for a moment and think about them. Lyra is my favourite character, I love how she is so realistic and the way she and Sonnie get along so well. I love all of Sonnie's unique quirks. She is completely unlike any other book character I have ever read about, and I have read a lot of books! I like how she is confident despite the fact that she knows she is unusual. She is such a well written character and I loved reading from her perspective. Hunter was perfect. I don't really know how else to describe him, but he's brilliant. I wish we got to read more about Connor, and also Sonnet's mum. They both seem like excellent characters, but I wish their personalities were elaborated on a bit more. I didn't feel as though I knew those characters as much as I would like to. I don't think I can describe Vaughn without you having read the book, but he was a well-written character, even though he wasn't my favourite.

There were some parts at the beginning which I thought were unnecessary - mostly the sections with 'cute chef' in them - and some parts at the end unfolded very suddenly, and I had to reread sections to be sure of what just happened. But overall, I really enjoyed this book. My biggest issue was that I have to wait for the sequel. The door for the next book is left hanging wide open, and I need to know what happens next! I highly recommend this book to anybody who likes cute romance novels. It is an exceptional debut novel and I can't wait to read more!

*Many thanks to the author, Bree Lauren, for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

This was a very cute debut novel! I follow Bree's booktube channel and I can definitely say that her kindness and optimism can be felt throughout the book.
If you like storylines on the milder side of angst, featuring genuine characters, with an artsy writing style, then you'll like the story of Sonnie and Hunter, two talented souls brought together by their love for poetry and music.
Sonnie is a commitment shy girl and, apart from her sister and longstanding friendship with Vaughn and Connor, she had no real relationships until Hunter.
Hunter has a bad history with cheating so he doesn't react very well to Sonnie's very close yet platonic friendship with Vaughn. Until Vaughn realizes that he is losing Sonnie and decides to confess his true feelings.
This story had potential to be much more angsty given the topics. There were times were I was feeling so much emotion and times when the story was dragging a bit. It was an overall nice debut.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

A Soul Full of Stars was one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading or in this case listening to as it was the audible version. This novel was the perfect blend of humor, friendship and romance. Bree Lauren was able to capture so much emotion in this story and was able to make the characters so very relatable and likable that you could not help but love it all.
This is Sonnet (OMG... I just loved that name) or as her friends call her Sunny's story and Bree Lauren took us on an incredible journey with her. Sunny was so full of life and energy, it was fun reading about her.
The sext poems were so unique and a marvelous addition to the story. There were so many amazing lyrics and poems throughout the novel and I loved them all.
The audible version of this novel was narrated by Leslie Gray Robbins and she did an amazing job of bringing Sunny to life. You were able to feel Sunny's energy while listening to the story.
For a debut novel this book was phenomenal. It was engrossing and will have you hooked until the end. I would highly recommend it to all lovers of contemporary romance.

3.5! So much potential. Loved the real-ness of the characters. A soul full of stars didn't feel like something I had read before, like many are in this genre. Just a bit here and there that could be cut. Other parts so good, I'd love to see them developed further. Worth a read, for sure.

I just finished this book and I am really having a hard time rating it!

As I started reading this debut novel I was in awe of her writing style. It's easy and poetic. The characters are quite 'real' and it gives the story something extra.

I did have some difficulties with the extensive descriptions of conversations, music, what people were wearing and stuff.
And I was utterly at a loss why a date with some douchebag was included. It did not add to the story in my opinion. Not everything had to be told or discussed extensively so I do think some parts could have been edited, conversations could have been shorter for example. It made the story lag a little in the beginning. I was thinking 3 stars, still loving the writing.

However, as soon as the relationship between Sonnie and Hunter was developing, the story perked up and I absolutely loved the poetic sexts, the honesty between the couple and such. The author's love for poetry and music is shining through.

The last part of the story totally surprised me. I was really disappointed in Sonnie even when I could understand her reasoning. The story does not end on a cliffhanger, but leaves a door open to the next book (I think about another couple?) and I can't wait!

In the end I decided on 4.5 - 5 stars as I really enjoyed the book once I was past the first part.

Love the characters because they are not cookie-cutter / unbelievably "perfect" people. The dialogue is snappy and funny or real and emotional. I believe there will be Vaughn vs Hunter camps, which makes discussions all the more fun! A must-read. By the time you finished the book, you'll be clambering for the next book in the series ....

Before I start my review, and in the interest of full disclosure, I consider Bree Lauren to be a friend. She was one of the first bloggers I "met" on Goodreads. She's been very encouraging to me as I started my own blog and I absolutely adore her! That said, I would never let me friendship with an author color my review so everything I am about to write is 100% honest and unbiased.

That said.... I haven't read a book in a long time that made me swoon so hard!

So Sonnet Cole is our heroine. Everyone calls her Sonnie. She is a spoken word poet who likes to write what she calls "poetic sexts" and send them to her best friend, Vaughn. He doesn't seem to appreciate them, so she decides to send one to a virtual stranger. She sends this:
"I’m the sweat pooling between your shoulder blades, the sheets tangled among your calves, the tongue at your collarbone, and the sigh caught between your lips. I am everything you dream about when waking, aching."

I know right??? That's one poetic sext! What's really crazy? He. Answers. Her! I was hooked by the concept.

I love, love, LOVED the poetry in this book. Lauren's writing, even in prose is so lyrical and descriptive. I really got into it! It was just beautifully written.
And I had real appreciation for the characters too. Sonnie reminds me so much of my  best friend growing up. She's creative and blunt and funny. I love her relationship with her two friends, Vaughn and Connor. She's also got a beautiful relationship with her sister, Lyra. All the characters feel like genuine people with real friendships! None of the conversations felt fake, even when our hero was delivering swoon-worthy lines.

I like a romance hero as much as anyone else, but don't you sometimes just want to roll your eyes and say, "Real men don't talk like that!" Not in Lauren's book. The guys talk like... well, guys! And sometimes so does Sonnie – just like a woman with two guys best friends would!

For the longest time I thought Vaughn might be the one who was texting her, but in secret. I found myself telling her (you know, cuz she's my friend and all), "Sonnie, wake up! Vaughn is the one you are supposed to be with!"

I vacillated back and forth between who I thought was Sonnie's soul mate. I'm not giving any spoilers here, but I was very happy with the book's resolution. As soon as I finished I ran to my email to ask Bree when she was writing another book! Good news. She says she's working on it!

In the meantime, I will be rereading Soul Full of Stars because, guys, It. Is. So. Good!

Yeah, my friend wrote it. But even if she didn't, I'd still give this book all the stars in the sky! So. Good!

Emotional Blackmail and Ultimatums

The writing of this story was well done and I wasn’t bored. I absolutely adored the poetry but as one of the elements I loved, unfortunately it petered out pretty quickly and became a distant side note in the rest of the book. SPOILERS AHEAD

I didn’t love Sonnet in the beginning, she seemed flighty and unwise, oblivious to what was going on around her and consumed with Champagne problems (like ohmagad everybody loves me!). She purposely set out to mess with men’s emotions: making them “love” her just in time for her to lose interest in them. Is it any wonder it bit her in the butt?

But the emotional blackmail that happened in this book was upsetting and what Sonnet put Hunter through was what really broke the camel’s back. It really made me dislike her, and pretty much hate Vaughn, even though she was clearly unhappy as well. Nearly to the point that I wasn’t convinced she deserved an HEA much less the love of not one but TWO dear men.

I gave this 3 stars because of the poetry and the writing but this book is otherwise so against my personal preferences in a romance that I can’t really provide a higher rating. I dislike other woman/ other man issues and there was obviously a big one here.
Besides that though, the way that the OM was handled was just fully unpleasant. When Conner laid into Sonnet and/or Vaughn I could have cheered! Unfortunately Conner’s insight didn’t really redeem what Sonnet put Hunter through and he took her back basically no questions no reprisals.

Sooooo yeah, this was a miss for me. But if these wouldn’t be deal breakers for you, please enjoy and ignore my rant!

When the Poet met the Poem...
Having endured the Rock N' Roll scene for over a decade, hunter finds himself searching for a deeper, more meaningful relationship than the usual groupies hook-up. Meeting Sonnet he feels he finally has a solid chance at something more and with substance. Sonnet, however, has always been free-spirited, relying on her freedom and doing as she has always pleased. This whirlwind affair has them both wondering what is happening... for the first time one has lost every ounce of control over her emotions while the other seems to have complete control over his. A beautiful story about meeting your One and Only when you least expect it. 5 Poetic Stars for "A Soul Full of Stars."

A soul full of stars was on my list of books to read for a few months, and knowing the author (who is also booktuber) I already had an idea of what to expect.

The dynamics of Hunter and Sonny was amazing and the maturity of the characters (most of the time) made me happy. I'm used to read dark romance, so I'm always happy when I get a book with healthy relationships hehe

I highly recommend it, the story developed very well and I didn't even feel the time pass :)

Swooooon....
This book was so beautiful and I really love it. I had been looking for sweet romance that made me smile and swoon and this book was really perfect.

I was so smitten with Hunter and Soni the way the start their relationship and how Hunter want to do things perfect to make it work was everything, he is soooo awesome.

All the characters in the book are very easy to like and all of them were a great addition to the story.

This book also has it's angsty moments and some parts were I was cursing and scolding to some of the characters because of some silly decisions they made and how they behave. I was like " jeez don't do it please just don't" but of course they wouldn't listen to me Lol.

I have many favorite parts in this book that I can't put here in order to make it spoil free.

I am really looking forward for the next books, I want that Vaughn, Lira and others find their HEA.

The narrator was really good is my first time listening to her I like the pace and sound of her voice and the way she portray the emotions is really good.

This is a super cute, heartfelt book. Quick read, and very entertaining.

The writing was absolutely beautiful, I loved the lyrics and poetry within the book. Definitely a slow burn, but I love that. No OW drama but a bit of a triangle going on there - but done so well, that even when people hate love triangles, they'd dig this one.

Really digs into emotions of friendships as well as falling into love for the first time. It was relatable, and the main character, Sonny was SO cute and quirky - But super honest in such a likable way - I could totes hang with this girl if she was real.

I loved The chemistry between Sonny & Hunter - even though I secretly wanted Sonny to end up with Vaughn, I'm excited to see how his story progresses in possible future books. I give this a strong 4 stars, only because I like drama, and feel this could've had maybe a little more drama too it. But all-in-all I loved it!

I must state in full disclosure, that the author and I are friends. However, I am not one to pull punches when reviewing, beta-reading, or editing any work for someone I also know well. Therefore following is my honest opinion of SFOF...

I am perhaps at heart a sci-fi junky, but I'm also a complete bibliophile and voracious reader. I rarely meet a well-written book I don't enjoy, with rare exceptions, and I enjoy a wide range of genres. Romance is actually a genre I enjoy quite a bit. I was very excited to read one by a friend, knowing anything I'd read of hers was well crafted. SFOF did not disappoint.

The story centers around a bright and funny hairdresser with the enviable name of Sonnet Cole, though she goes by Sonnie. She's fun and creative and as a character, very likable. I think one of the things I liked best about this story was the interactions between the characters. The back and forth in convos were funny and felt very true to life. I love, love, LOVE the clear focus on not only the love story but the FRIENDSHIPS between characters within the book. It was heartwarming and really made me invest in the characters and their relationships. The characters are very well developed and Bree does an excellent job of building atmosphere. You can see things like her salon, the bookstore, etc. very clearly in your mind's eye. It's a really fun read, and I chuckled as I read often at the interactions and dialogue.

Without giving spoilers, let me say there is an interesting plot twist for the "boy loses girl" part of the traditional romance/romcom formula the story follows. I felt the tension and even got angry with certain characters. At first, I did struggle with some choices Sonnie made that I felt were a little unrealistic. However, one neat thing the writer did was have a character literally take the words out of my mouth and berate Sonnie for that incredibly dumb decision. You feel pretty justified in your irritation with her when another character actually makes the same points you wished you could spout to Sonnie.

One part I thought could have used better development was the main love interest, Hunter. I think Sonnie and her close circle of friends were a bit more "real" to me. I liked him, but it was a little hard to root for him as much as I wanted to. I know the story was largely centered around Sonnie's POV, but perhaps a few more scenes or interactions could have made him as personal to me as her close friends. I will add, it's been a while since I read it, and I plan to re-read. I might revise this when I go over their relationship a second time.

One of the BEST things is the poetic "sexts" that Sonnie writes. They are spellbinding... I think this was one of the elements that best brought excitement and steam to the relationship. Bree Lauren has a flair for poetry, and the sexy ones will literally make you fan yourself (unless that's just a hot flash). The sexts were SO good I actually demanded the author text me some (unexpected benefits to knowing an author!) I also insisted my guy write one, which he surprisingly did justice to. This is my new favorite art form EVER.

I will mention that if you are an X-Genner like I am, you might find the book a little "Millennial-ish." I wasn't familiar with a lot of the music references and some of the other pop culture aspects. Also, though my generation may have started the process of mainstreaming tattoos, Millenials have certainly run with it. Just some little elements in the book reminded me of how the experience of reading it was similar to how though I loved both, I related more with Sex In the City than Girls, heh. It did not in any way get in the way of my enjoyment of the story though.

I'll end this review by saying that I loved reading SFOF and when I finished the book, immediately wished the 2nd book was available. I would have bought it right then to read next. I wanted to hang out more with Sonnie and her friends, I wanted to see what happened to her friend Vaughn. I even demanded she let me beta read the next book. I've also added re-reading SFOS to my Summer reading plans. As a debut novel, this book stood out in the quality of writing, and I know the next story in the series will only get better.

3.5 stars of Aww. So many sappy sap and sweet moments with mostly little angst. I read this when I wanted something easygoing and light, so I enjoyed it for that. Hell, it was so easygoing in some instances it bordered on real-life boring, which actually worked for me. It was like sitting around with freinds and family and just being a little silly and a lot familiar and comforting.

On another note, Sonny was kinda shallow in her brain, but on purpose, because it's easier that way considering her greatest role model's life choices. She has issues as a result, and don't we all for pretty much similar reasons?

Even though she's slutty, she's among the few fairly likeable promiscuous characters (male or female) I've read recently. She's slutty because that's who she is (you know, until she finds 'the one', though she's initially skeptical about that ever being a thing for her), as opposed to female characters who act that way to please others.

I didn't much sympathize with her in the last conflict or anywhere else in the book except with her sister, but thankfully things ended well despite her brushing aside some vitally obvious things. I can't say she grew up exactly, since she didn't seem to reach any important conclusions or epiphanies on her own, but she did move past her own stupidity and get on with things. Good on you, Sonet (and I must mention what an interesting and unique name she has).

"A Soul Full of Stars" is a debut book of a new series by Bree Lauren, an author, that I am a subscriber to her YouTube channel. I found out her book when I was looking for her here in Goodreads. When I saw the book at KU, I borrowed it right away. Even though I have the book since April (2020), I decided that July of 2020 is the time to read it.
This novel was the perfect blend of humor, friendship, and romance. Bree Lauren was able to capture so much emotion in this story and was able to make the characters so very relatable and likable that you could not help but love it all.

The sext poems were so unique and a marvelous addition to the story. There were so many amazing lyrics and poetry throughout the novel, and I loved them all. (The e-book has an interactive surprise that I fell in love with.)
"A Soul Full of Stars" digs into emotions of friendships as well as falling into love the first time. It was relatable, and the main character, Sonny, was SO cute and quirky - But super honest in such a friendly way - I could tote hang with this girl if she was real.
I'm a sucker for a good romance novel, and A Soul Full of Stars did not disappoint. Once I got started, I couldn't put it down! I can't wait for the sequel.

What I loved most of all in A Soul Full of Stars is the friendship between Sonnie, Vaughn, and Connor – it’s equal parts sweet, hilarious, and admirable. It’s the kind of love story you don’t expect to find, but end up loving even more than the main one you came for.

I absolutely loved this book! The writing was beautiful but also so realistic like I could picture and believe every character and every moment. I love romances that incorporate texts and emails but the way that Sonnet and Hunter sexted in this was so unique. Overall, I was absolutely hooked on page 1 and I was even more invested in all of the characters which is unusual for me because I usually find myself skipping through side character plots. Anyway, 5/5 stars would totally recommend!

I’m not usually a huge fan of romance, but this one pulled me in. It’s fun, easy to read, and definitely puts a modern spin on romance. The way Bree Lauren spun music and poetry into this book is amazing. The characters feel a little too cool; I feel like they could have had a few more flaws.

Overall, I really liked it. I would read it again.
