It's a re-read and the massive battle between Heaven and Hell is still in the progress of building up. Friends turned into enemies, a mysterious person from the past came back to haunt a certain character, both demons and angels battled in front of the Gate of Paradise fighting over the one and only chance to enter God's private garden.

Meanwhile High Angel Rosiel defeats his greatest foes but his victory also costs him his sanity, but with Demon Lord Lucifer still under Rosiel's control, will the MCs and the angel-rebels stand a chance of winning?

First and foremost, the artwork is just so fucking great, the half-mad Rosiel Lucifer and his demon army really steal the show, while the good guys all struggling to keep their heads above water, I'm fully entertained! LOL

Review for complete series

No matter how hard he tries, Setsuna always manages to run into trouble, and his love for his sister is just one of many things that seem to be going wrong. It is only when two demons appear and make his life an even bigger mess that Setsuna comes to realise all his misfortunes might be linked to the fallen angel Alexiel.

I would definitely consider Angel Sanctuary a great and classic manga. But for all that, I am sure it does not appeal to everyone. In addition to the incestuous relationship between Setsuna and his sister Sara, there are drugs and alcohol, gruesome murders and mutilations, rape, child murder, a twisted view on religion and god, suicide, characters whose minds turn grotesque and obsessive - the list goes on. These are subjects that might be very appealing to some, but also very problematic for others.

I belong to the latter - usually, these subjects would automatically cause me to stay clear from such a book. It is truly a macabre tale, and that's just the way Kaori Yuki's works go. Yet despite my reluctance to give such subjects a try, I can say that whether one likes it or not, there's no denying that this is a brilliantly crafted story with an impressive amount of meaningful characters.

Kaori Yuki's art and stories all suffer and gain from the same thing: the sheer mass of detail. Her art is absolutely gorgeous with all the fine hair and cloth and just all the immense details. But at times, it can make the pages overcrowded and confusing - it certainly takes a longer time to read than your average manga. The story is at times likewise confusing as anything - it can be hard to keep track of which panels come first. But it's the wonderfully interwoven plot that remains a solid point throughout. The smallest details from the first volume can become relevant in the later ones and there is one plot twist after the another. There's never a boring moment as we follow Setsuna unravelling all the intrigues that surround the large cast.

Although I would consider the plot a strong point of this work, it is yet the characters who seem to turn it into something special. I have rarely come across a manga with so many characters who all have diverse and deep personalities. You get to love and hate all of them as even the most villainous ones prove to have something very humane and rather pitiful about them. In the end, one wonders - who was the true villain, if there was one at all? But with all the variety, there's no denying that the majority of them are broken characters. Every one of them seems to be involved in one twisted mess or another.

Luckily, there are great bonds of love, friendship and family that stand strong throughout the story and every now and then offer a well deserved comic relief. Angel Sanctuary is most certainly worth a try for any who enjoy strong character-driven stories that'll leave you with a hard time picking out a favourite character.

This really was Kato's volume. The action is pretty much non stop here. Yuki's comment in the afterword about Metatron confused me a bit... did'nt he survive, that's what I got from the end of the last volume at least. Rosiel gets crazier and crazier. Down to 2 to go...

As the pieces fall into place, Rosiel's plan becomes obvious... He plans to enter the highest plane of Heaven, Atziluth, and use the Tablet of Heaven to bring back his beauty and make him invincible! Not only that, but he has some sort of stone that keeps Lucifer under his command... Is Lucifer's actions truly his own? Focusing on the most important matter, Setsuna and his team must get to the Grand Cross before Lucifer and Rosiel, so that they can keep them out of Atziluth. But, as Kato's body deteriorates along with his memories, his only self-assigned mission is to kill Lucifer, the man that is desecrating the image of the person he had loved most in all the worlds. Knowing only one way any of them could get rid of Lucifer, he unveils the egg of wormwood! When the egg is hatched it will bring the final judgement down and the end of all worlds. It is said to only kill those with evil spirits, but it seems it actually seeks out all life!

So, Kato finally dies for the last time. I'm going to miss him, again, I think. But how many times has he died now? And yet, somehow, Setsuna and the others feel the crushing blow of his loss even more, every single time... I don't think I could do that. I admire and respect them all the more for that. Also, I'm so sad that there are only two volumes left. :'( After it's over, I think I'll need to reread Grand Guignol Orchestra, or perhaps start on the Cain Saga or Fairy Cube for closure. TT~TT One last thing... If everything outside of those gates is dead now, then does that also mean that Sara will finally die for the last time too? *Gasp*, and did Raphy go with them? O_O I really hope he did. But didn't he stay behind for Sara? To treat her, then look for her? AAHHHH, RAPHHYYY D'':

I couldn't tolerate where the story was heading, so I skipped a couple of volumes only to see Sara, utterly brainwashed (her pathetic character is striking a nerve); Michael and Uriel supporting Setsuna; and Raphael grieving.
It took a few moments of, "What in the world is going on?" before I realized I pretty much skipped very important scenes. No surprise seeing how action-packed and complexly woven Angel Sanctuary's storyline is. Setsuna remains my favourite character. Even while Kira takes his turn for the worst but not much of a surprise, seeing his role as Lucifer, fallen angel of the underworld.
Setsuna's loyalty, bravery, and love remains an epitome of an outstanding spirit that embodies the soul of a former archangel, the made up angel Alex who I find is over mentioned. It was clear from his arrival to the upper spiritual levels of the world, that Setsuna is no Alex. Setsuna is Setsuna and that's all that has to be said.
