ARC provided by Netgalley for a fair review.

Prince Lincoln not only is a skilled demon hunter, but also will do whatever it takes as his role as prince that his duty calls. That includes marrying someone he has hardly even spoken to to form an alliance, though he has always known that he will not marry for love. In the midst of his own political scheme that risks his own life, but could potentially save many other demon hunters, he finds himself distracted by a half human half demon warrior girl.

The Story
Okay, I am going to be honest. I don’t remember requesting this book at all from Netgalley. I haven’t read the Angelbound books prior to this, so I probably have no place reviewing a novella. None the less, I still read this and enjoyed it enough. since it’s a novella it’s rather short so I was able to get through it in a single sitting. The only problem is that since I hadn’t read the other books I found myself a little lost on some elements within the world. That all aside, I could honestly say that if the rest of the books were written in the same manner as this one, I probably wouldn’t read them, even if the world is intriguing enough.

Why? Because it’s written in that first person point of view style where it’s read like someone is telling a story or you’re reading their thoughts. Lines such as:

“My heart lightens. Can it be?”
“It’s a mystery, but it’s one that’s proven unsolvable. It’s certainly nothing I’ll figure out right now. Besides, I have far better things to do…”
“After Walker leaves, I start doing….things. I believe reviewing paperwork and meeting some of the Earls is involved.”

I personally just don’t like this style of writing and find a lot of it to be just filler. In fact, I find that it takes away from the plot and world building, which in this case I found lacking.

The World Building
Honestly, it’s my fault I probably found this lacking. This is what I get for reading a novella for a book series that I haven’t read. Again, I didn’t realize I had even requested this, but what am I to do?? I can’t let the publisher down now! I am guessing this is supposed to be a urban paranormal fantasy?? There was mention of Twinkies and parks that close at dusk, so that was really my only guess to that. Aside from that, I was put into a world with ghouls, demons, thrax (whatever that is?) and quasi demons, etc. There wer some small little world building bits sort of thrown in as a side comment, like why guns don’t work on demons (another hint to the urban paranormal bit). Anyway, a little less personal thoughts in the writing and a little more scenery description could have gone a long way and been a lot more use of page space/word length in my opinion. But you all know how much I like to mentally escape in my fantasy novels.

The Characters
Lincoln seems like he is set up to be the ideal guy, and I guess that’s okay, but I personally like a guy with some flaws. Then again, maybe that comes into play in the rest of the series.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have enjoyed reading all of the Angelbound series and this was interesting being from Lincoln's point of view rather than Myla`s. It was very short so the reader had less time to become totally involved but having read the other books in the series made it more accessible. I would happily recommend it to in particular to fans of Lincoln and Myla.

*Thoughts*

Duty Bound, by Christina Bauer, is the prequel to her Angelbound Originals series. This prequel features 18-year old Lincoln Vidar Osric Aquilus, High Prince of the Thrax and a Demon Hunter of some renown. This story takes place in the months before Angelbound where readers will meet Myla Lewis. Thrax normally live underground, but in this story, Lincoln's family is living in Purgatory. While Myla makes brief appearances, this story really is about Lincoln's struggles with his impending marriage to Lord Aldred's daughter, and his struggle to find a way to bring down the pig headed Lord who is doing more harm than good. This is my first reading of any of the authors novel, but I do want to continue with Angelbound since we all know that Myla is the one who is something unique and different, and supposedly untouchable because of rules between Demon Hungers and Quasi-Demons. Alas, in case you missed it, Purgatory is a place ruled by Ghouls. They are all extraordinary tall, and wear long black robes. One of the Ghouls is named Walker, and if you've read Angelbound, I am sure you know who he is.

Duty Bound (Angelbound Lincoln #1) by Christina Bauer

ARC provided by Xpresso Book Tours and Christina Bauer. All opinions are mine and freely given.

Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Facebook

02-18: 'Duty Bound' is a short prequel novel in the Angelbound series by Christina Bauer. Lincoln, the High Prince of Thrax is a demon hunter. Their world consists of Heaven, Hell, Earth, Purgatory, and a place called the Dark Lands, and in addition to his kind, there are humans, ghouls, and a what seems to be a number of other races.

There's a neighboring kingdom called Acca that he and his royal family struggle to manage.. run by an ambitious man who costs many warriors their lives to serve his personal agenda. Which of course, incites the prince. He wants to put an end to all the senseless death this story is mostly about the pursuit of that, as well as the structure he works within.

As it's brief, it's tough to say much about where the story is going, without spoilering it.. and I don't wish to ruin it for anyone who might want to read it. I'll say that Lincoln and his mother, the Queen, have an interesting relationship. It sometimes seems hostile, but I don't think it really is. She's suspicious by nature and he's often up to something. They spar verbally, but in a really amusing tone. Honestly, he plays word games like a 10 year old with her, and it's kind of hilarious.

He's kind though, he's good to others, he's supportive of young thrax coming up in training, and he wants what's best for everyone. Of course, then there's a girl. We don't find out much about her, only that she is.. well.. everything he's not supposed to like.

The real struggle is between him and the Earl of Acca. The Earl has his sights set very high and in his unscrupulous ways, is attempting to reach them.. while Lincoln is trying to stay a step ahead without losing his.

It's a fun little novel and I'm eager to move on in the series and see if it develops. The story is well-written, the special weaponry Lincoln uses is very creative, and the races seem pretty well fleshed out. In fact.. the demons have some pretty cool fighting abilities I haven't seen before too.

Reviewed on Behalf of http://bookaddict.live,
Finally I have the opportunity to read Duty Bound the prequel to Angelbound. In some ways we all feel we know and love Lincoln. The one thing that stood out for me was the pressure he is under and how alone he feels. As we know in the later books, the trouble the house of Acca cause for our feisty heroine in future books in the Angelbound Series.
Also after reading this book, it explained his absolute devotion the Myla as she was made for him. The book is an eye opener as it was great to hear Lincoln voice, it’s a treat I wouldn’t have wanted to miss. More from Lincoln Please Ms Bauer. I’m just off to read Angelbound for Myla and Lincoln’s first meeting again.

Christina Bauer had blessed us, people! I know that she isn't one of the authors that believe in "just leave it at that", looking at how she repeatedly gifted us with more and more prequels, sequels, and stories of our beloved baby Lincoln our savage queen Myla.

One thing (if I remembered right, I've mentioned before) I loved the most about Bauer's books is the tone. Bauer had this distinct attitude when it comes to writing her narrations, which includes some of the best sarcasm, savageness, and badassness that I have ever seen in any book ever. In fact, if you give me a Bauer book, didn't let me know the title or the author or anything about it, and just let me try and guess who the author is, chances I I really would think Bauer as a possibility in my head. That's how distinctive her narrations are.

This book is no exception. This book, by writing from Lincoln's perspectives, proved how Lincoln has just as much brains, sass, and fighting skills as Myla (if we didn't already suspect that before). It was just a novella, and a prequel. It was simply a treat for us to get more of them, that I most definitely enjoyed a lot.

I really liked how Bauer managed to make this book so interesting for me, despite its short length. I especially liked how this book taught me so much about their world's demonology on Class A, B, E, F demons, etc. The actions scenes were excellent quality and did give me some adrenaline when reading, all these stuff and more just made me have so much fun reading it.

I really do suggest people who have already read the Angelbound series, you'll enjoy this so much because we get more Lincoln (and Myla, kind of). But even if you didn't read the series...I actually do think that if you read this book before you start, it can help get you pumping and excited for the other ones because this book can really show you what you're going to receive.

I finished Duty Bound last night as part of the A-Z Reading Challenge. I requested this book on NetGalley, not knowing it was a novella (stupid, I know). HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised by how I could follow the story. I did miss some world building, but that was to be expected. I won't judge this book based on that, because it was my own mistake.

I will start with saying: Walker is my baby and I will kill anyone who tries to hurt him. That being said, the author managed to make me like and hate characters in a novella smaller than 200 pages without a lot of buildup. That is impressive.

Lincoln is a ballsy character and I love it. He knows what he's doing and he doesn't act without thinking. I love the relationship he has with others, for example with his mother and with Walker.

I'm excited to read more about Lincoln and the mystery girl. Despite not having enough world building, I'm glad I got to read it before Angelbound because it gives you more information about Lincoln. I can't wait to start Angelbound!

I really feel like I should've read the Angelbound series before I started this one... Having enjoyed Bauer's other works, I requested this one from Netgalley without much thought, which I now regret.

Because this is a prequel novella, the worldbuilding is pretty fuzzy. We're sent into this with the assumption that we know the races and politics of this world, which wasn't true for me. It wasn't a big deal, but I would've enjoyed this much more if I would've understood everything

But, the real thing that killed this for me was the insta love. I hate insta love, and it was even worse than usual in this one. I mean, our characters never actually spoke, but Lincoln was convinced he was in love. I still plan on reading the next two books, but I wasn't all too impressed by this one.

Thanks to Christina Bauer and Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!

This was an excellent prequel from Lincoln's POV! The best part about this novella is that it's a story unto itself. It's got some good cameos and it gives great insight to what Lincoln is up to during the beginning of Angelbound.

I am completely new to Christina Bauer's book, so I wanted to pick one of her November Paperback releases that was the start to a new series. So even though, a bunch of the series look awesome, I chose Duty Bound because it was a prequel novella, where some of the other books were later novels in the series. I really enjoyed Duty Bound. It is the prequel novel in the Angelbound origins series, and best of all it is told from the point of view of the main male character, which is such a rarity in YA books. I love seeing a male point of view.

Prince Lincoln's family fights demons. Lincoln himself is a great character! He is very strong willed but he is easily someone that you want on your side, because he will really fight for what he believes in. Duty Bound did an excellent job of wetting my whistle and making me want to continue on in the Angelbound series. I believe the next book in the series is told in Myla's point of view, so I am curious to see how that will change my opinion on any of the characters. As it stands, I am very much enjoying this series. It is perfect for fans of paranormal romances. I have been on a demon kick lately when I pick up paranormal books, and this was a great series to dive into. I can't wait for more. I need to grab the rest of the books ASAP. (And I need to grab some of Mrs. Bauer's other series as well. I can't wait to read the Beholder series and the Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series.)

Angelbound, Dutybound (Book 1 of the Angelbound Lincoln Series) – Christina Bauer

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher so I could provide an honest review.

Christina Bauer is an American author who writes many fantasy stories. Besides the “Angelbound Offspring” series she has also written the “Pixieland Diaries” and the “Beholder” series plus many more.

Lincoln is the Prince of the Thrax and has a hard time stating out of trouble and listening to the rules that his parents have set out for him.

Namely, he has to marry the daughter of the Earl of Acca and his parents insist that love not be a factor into the consideration of the union. Further, and probably the hardest part for him, is not interfering the in the Earl’s reckless deployment of his soldiers against the demons that threaten the humans of Earth.

And honestly Lincoln is fine with the arranged marriage – kind of fits into his plans of disrupting the Earls deployment of his troops, which is something he will never stop doing.

But one thing threatens all of this – a mysterious quasi demon girl in purgatory. And Lincoln isn’t normally one to let a girl district him.

“Dutybound” is a short paranormal fantasy story that has the first stirrings on romance entwined in the tale. If you are wanting a short read that will keep you entertained on a train ride or a short road trip to see a friend – then I would definitely recommend this one for you. The only complaint I have is that this ending left sooo many unanswered questions, but as its book 1 of the series – I can look past that!

Thank you to Netgalley and Monster House Books for sending me a copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

As someone who hasn't read the Angelbound series before, I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book, but I was pleasantly surprised! It was extremely engaging and kept me wanting to know more about Lincoln and his world. I enjoyed the worldbuilding that took place and thought that it was very unique. I haven't read anything like it before, but it reminded me of Supernatural, and I loved that.

Lincoln was a very interesting character, and I enjoyed being introduced to the conflict he's dealing with and seeing him grow even in such a short amount of time. I also can't wait to see where things are going to go with the mystery girl.

This seems like a really great introduction to these series, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

If you're a fantasy romance fan, you'll want to check this series out!

This was so much fun. I like the characters, the magic system and world building. Lincoln was an interesting and fun character to read. I loved his personality and that he didn't back down when he knew he was right and for the right reasons. It was super fun.
I'm very excited to keep reading about this world.

I received this book from NetGalley for review
Even though it's been a while since I read the first book in this series and I forgot the minor details of what was happening on Myla's side of things. This was still a really enjoyable read. I want to re-read the series again. Partly because when I first read the series, Acca and Thrax weren't out and Armageddon was the third book. So there's been changes made to the series, some gaps that I had previously thought needed to be filled that seemed to have been filled.

Intriguing new paranormal romance, this demon world feels a bit like Buffy the Vampire slayer vibe which I enjoy. The reader is quickly thrown into a world where there are slayers of demons. With a bit of political intrigue, Lincoln is the heir apparent who will be committing to a royal wedding of convenience.

This tale is promising as the reader learns about an aristocratic world where Thrax are demon fighters. And it is a kingdom with issues that Lincoln does not fully understand. There is some confusion for me with Lincoln being so young, yet deemed as not so young. This series has all the things I like to read about: an evil villain, blackmail, a mysterious love interest and a protagonist who wants to protect his people. Lincoln is an idealist and it will be fun to see how he grows. More specifically it will be interesting to see if this series is written in a progressive manner.

There are a couple of hooks in this story which makes me want to read on. What is going on with Lincoln's father? Will Lincoln really get married to his betrothed? And why are the females not fighting or being trained to be warriors anymore? This teaser prequel is tightly written and piques my interest. Recommended to paranormal romance readers who enjoy sexy demon fighting slayers.

Goodreads Synopsis:
By popular demand! A prequel novella to the best-selling Angebound, told from Prince Lincoln's point of view!

As the High Prince of the demon-fighting thrax, Lincoln knows he must marry for political gain. Not that he minds. For all of his eighteen years, Lincoln’s been bound to his duty. Fighting demons is his life, and he’s never given romance a second thought. Instead, the High Prince lives for the days when he leaves his hidden realm to fight demons on Earth.

Then, everything changes.

Lincoln and his nobles become forced to visit Purgatory, the home of quasi-demons (who are mostly human with a bit of demonic DNA). Here Lincoln spies Myla Lewis, a lady warrior who enflames his heart, ignites his interest, and inspires his respect. Trouble is, Myla’s also a quasi. By thrax law, Lincoln must kill anything demonic—not date them. For the first time in his life, Lincoln wonders if he’ll follow his duty…or heed the demands of his heart.

My Review:
Yes I'm reading another installment of the Angelbound series, and yes I like the cover. This one, however, is a little different than the others. This is a prequel, set before the first book. The cover is really pretty, and it fits well with the other books in the series. Yet another story about Lincoln and Myla, and I'm not disappointed by it. They've been the same characters we know and love through the story, and that doesn't change in this book.

A little different than the others, this book is from the point of view of Lincoln, the High Prince of the Thrax, otherwise known as demon hunters. It begins with him stating how many demons he's killed to date, one thousand four hundred and thirty-seven, but he has troubles connecting with his mother. Especially when she's interrogating him about Adair, from the Acca house. Even worse, Adair's father is killing off his own army just to spite Lincoln. To top it all off he can't stop thinking about a certain quasi-demon that he saw.

I really enjoyed this book and it was a nice addition to the series. I liked seeing things from Lincolns point of view, and getting to know Walker better too. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.

I received this eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.

Lincoln, High Prince, is having a rough go at things lately. He has to leave his homeland to stay in Purgatory, because an angel requires them to. Then he has to be around demons daily, which he usually kills them - so his self restraint is being tested. He has to deal with Aldred's incompetence of leading his army, because eventually he will have all of his soldiers killed with his terrible calls. Lincoln has a plan to fix that, but it could end very badly. And now he's obsessing over a quasi demon who is keeping the doxies out of his horse stable. Out of all of this, the girl is what is on his mind over and over again. Which is silly, since Lincoln wouldn't be caught dead being attracted to a demon, right?

Life for Lincoln has always been tense - with being in line to be the next King - but right now, he's just trying to live minute by minute and figure out what is the right choice in every event.

This was a great novella! I actually read this after Angelbound because I knew it was written after the first book, and I wanted to get a feel of the world Christina Bauer created before going into a short story about a main character. And I'm so glad I did, because it gives me a whole different perspective of Lincoln! I can't believe how much he thought of Myla before he even met her! It makes every conversation between them so much better in Angelbound!

Lincoln takes on a lot of responsibility, and I can't believe what happened between him and the Accra tribe - Amazing! He is one stubborn and stern headed person, and I now know that him and Myla belong with each other.

Plus I loved being able to see him with his parents - it gives a lot of perspective to their relationship as son/parents and as husband/wife. You can tell that his mother wears the pants in their relationship :)

I'm so glad this story was created and the reader got a chance to dive into Lincoln's head :) I can't wait for the rest of the series that I'm about to dive into!

I’d like to thank the publishers and netgalley for an arc in exchange of an honest review.

Okay so I understand this book is apparently part of a wider series, but this wasn’t at all obvious when I requested it. I believe it is the first book from the Male MC rather than the female character, a la midnight sun style. Is this something that is in right now?

Anyway, it’s a short book, and doesn’t take very long to get through. Probably about two hours maximum if you read the same speed I do. I’m not sure if this is shorter or longer than the original? Can someone tell me?

Anyway, the MC Lincoln is highly unlikeable and cringe. I really wanted to smack him. Or maybe it’s all the cultural references to make the book seem self aware even though they’re not human? I’m really not sure but in the first 10% Batman is mentioned about five times alone, so is cable and tv and a band which I already forgot but one of the traditional rock bands everyone had T-shirt’s for but haven’t actually listened to.

This book feels like those people. Trying to be cool but kinda missing the mark. I didn’t like it personally, but it’s a bit of fun so if that’s your deal you’ll enjoy it. The writing isn’t bad, I just didn’t like the tone and characters. It felt like a big juxtaposition between tones to have people royal all dressed up and in purgatory talking about cable and Batman. Also whoever eats wilted strawberries for breakfast concerns me.

This wasn’t for me, but give it a try if you’re into more paranormal romance lit.

Book Description:
As the High Prince of the demon-fighting thrax, Lincoln knows he must marry for political gain. Not that he minds. For all of his eighteen years, Lincoln’s been bound to his duty. Then the prince glimpses Myla, a part-demon girl.
Everything changes.
Emotion blossoms, along with a single question: What happens when a woman you’ve never met upends your life completely?
Lincoln’s about to find out.

My Thoughts:
When reading the description I thought this would entail some kind of romance. It's not. You don't even get to meet the character Myla...like it says you get a glimpse of her. The description is very misleading and has nothing to do with the story. The only thing that is true is that Lincoln is going to marry, but you don't get to meet that person either.

The characters in this story were unbearable. Lincoln...is the self righteous...I am the hero of the story type of character. He is over confident in his skills as a demon hunter and says he knows all, but he also has a friend that tells him this information. I can't even describe why his parents annoy me.
The character I hate the most is Altred, the father of Lincoln's soon to be bride. A man who is overwhelming into himself and thinks he is the best person ever, but in reality is just an asshole who is okay with getting his team murdered.

I loved this look through Lincoln's eyes. It is a short novella but so great. He is duty bound to do what is right for the thrax. He is also compelled to because he is a good guy. He is kind and loving to his mother. He respects his father, though he is unhappy with how he handles some things. Then there is the intrigue when he sees the 'demon girl'.

I have grown to love these characters through the series and seeing them in a new way just makes it better. I still dislike Aldred and maybe more now seeing how horrid he was from the start. It was fun to see how indifferent Lincoln really was to his 'future bride' and then to be so enamored with Myla just on sight. I loved it.

It was a 5/5 for me. I would love to see the whole series from his perspective.

Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Overall a great book. Picked this up without reading the genesis series because the it got recommended to me at some point. The world is interesting and the magic system is unique.

Lincoln change from an apathetic prince to a love struck man drives most of the story and this type of character focused novel is exactly the thing that is missing from most paranormal romances. Though insta love isn’t my favorite group due to most writers using it as a crutch, it is done really well in this case. Rather Lincoln’s love struck moment servers as the spark that drives the rest of the story instead of consuming him.

Taking a step back, though the pacing of the book feels off. The book leaves on a cliff hanger but there is not resolution or climax to the book. While I am glad I found this book after the entire series got published, I feel for the readers who read this right after it got published because it feels like half a story. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Dutybound is a prequel Novella to the Angelbound series, which I haven't had a chance to read yet.

So despite the fact that I knew nothing about this story, the Novella proved to be an absolutely entertaining read.

My favorite thing is that none of it was confusing in the slightest. At times, when I read a prequel to a book, it has some references to the original book one which makes it confusing for the people who haven't read the book yet.

Thankfully, that didn't happen here.

I liked Lincoln, but my favorite character was the Earliest of Striga. Though he doesn't have much of a role in this novella, I am pretty sure he'll play a major role in Angelbound.

All in all, Dutybound was a fun, short read and I'm looking forward to reading the book one. After all, who doesn't love a badass warrior heroine?

Duty Bound is a SciFi kind of book - not really sure hoe it fits in with the Christian genre other than he fights demons and falls in love with a half human and half demon. He was raised to kill demons and their in in lies the conundrum, but basically that is about it. In a nutshell - and he is a Prince bequeathed to be married to someone he will never love who he can never let know what he does which make it somewhat a pickle - since he is in love with the demon girl.....phew wow poor guy. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this book are all my own.

Usually I would prefer the heroine's pov or a mix pov between the h and H, but this is Angelbound Origins we're talking about. And we all know how obsessed I am with Myla and Lincoln. We all heard Myla's pov so why not peek into Lincoln's right?

Nope. I was so prepared for all the paranormal goodness but unfortunately all I got is a repetition of Angelbound's prologue. With a tiny bit of extra thoughts on his arranged marriage and.... family or Thrax stuff... Despite it being told in Lincoln's pov It doesn't seem to intrigue me enough to give it a 4 star.

Still enjoyable and would recommend to read as a part of the series but I personally wouldn't re-read it.

This is a great change up for this series. I have always wondered what Lincoln was up to before and when he’s not with his quasi girl. I do love me some Lincoln. #TeamLincoln

It’s an interesting turn of events too. To see it all from his point of view, to get a deeper look into who he is, why he is the way he is. This side of the story also lets you see more of the inner struggle of the Thrax. It makes it easier to dislike the jerks. Lol so it’s... let’s just day it’s a humdinger of a read. Or listen in my case.

The author narrates her books and let me just say, she does a dang good job. I can’t wait to see where Lincoln takes us next!

The first in a series and I got so involved I read it in one sitting. Lincoln the noble Prince of a warrior race who fight demons to keep the humans safe on earth, tries to trick his future father in law into giving up leading demon hunting squads as his subjects keep dying. This is a great introduction to the character of Lincoln who is trying to do the right thing by his people. In this instalment that means saving the warriors lives whilst balancing the demands of his parents thag he narry for duty and never fall in love. The only problem is he is being distracted by a demon human warrior whom he can't get out of his head.

Looking forward to seeing where the story goes next!

This is a quick, engaging read that will captivate you from the start. If you've read the Angelbound series, then you're already somewhat familiar with Lincoln - and this is told from his POV. He's a great character, and if you weren't in love with him before, there's no way you won't be now. (You don't have to read Angelbound to dive into this, Bauer does a great job of establishing Lincoln as a character, and it won't be too hard to follow everything). This may be short, but along with the character development there's excellent world-building, setting us up for the installments to follow - and I can't wait to see where Lincoln's story takes us next.
