Tanglewood #3

The Pursuit of Lady Harriett

Rate this book
When wills clash and hearts collide, who will reign victorious?

Termed an Incomparable during her first London season, Lady Harriett Cavendish is beautiful, spirited, and confident, capturing the attention of a great many suitors. Unfortunately, they all failed to capture her attention, and she concluded the season as unattached as she’d begun it.

Only weeks prior to her second season, Harriett encounters Lieutenant Christopher Jamison while visiting Tanglewood Manor. Recently returned from war, the lieutenant is everything that Harriett's previous suitors were not. He’s arrogant, ungentlemanly, irritating, and challenges her at every opportunity. When he goes too far, Harriett decides that it’s time to turn the tables on him. But as she sets out to put the lieutenant in his place once and for all, she discovers there is more to him than meets the eye, and when it comes to matters of the heart, she has no control whatsoever.

Does anyone else remember that old commercial of that lady standing outside the closed store saying, "open, open, open?" Well, I feel like I'm standing outside the book store just waiting for this book to be released... "release, release, release." Is it August yet?!?!?!

***********************************************

Well, I was finally able to sit down and devour this book! I absolutely loved it, from start to finish! It's one of those books that suck you in and you just can't put down. I've enjoyed all the Tanglewood books, they're all great, but this just might be my favorite of the bunch.

Harriett and Christopher were such fun and likable characters. They have wonderful banter, great chemistry and some really sweet times together. I felt their relationship progressed at a natural pace, I am not a big fan of insta-love and I liked stories like this that they are falling in love without even realizing it. It just sneaks up on them.

Overall, this is a wonderful regency and one I will be quick to recommend. It has officially been added to my favorites shelf! Rachael has a knack for writing regencies, endearing characters and swoony romance!

4.5* rounding up

Lady Harriett has a problem, a thorn in her side, a nuisance, a bother, something she wants to squash, something she wants to defeat in battle, a force of reckoning, a burden, something that is wreaking complete havoc on her whole self, something that has filled her every thought (in searching how to remove and finish it off), something she is ready to pluck from her side and send scurrying back to London. If only...

Lieutenant Christopher Jamison is said thorn. How dare he come into her life and outwit, outdo, outmaneuver her at every turn. She is Lady Harriett, a female of high ranking, and very sought after by the gentlemen of the ton. Yet, this thorn, seems to disregard her completely unless he is teasing and frustrating her. This will never do. She must retaliate and out plan him. She will catch him unawares and send him packing to his parents in London, only then can she have peace again.

This was a fun battle of the wits type read. Two very strong characters have come head to head. It was fun to watch how they met and what first started their little feud, although, maybe everything they think about the feud is wrong. Misperceptions abound as these two try to outdo the other. Will they ever call a truce and get to know the other? Or will they continue on, feuding and outwitting until there is no hope of recovery?

Plenty of great quips and humor written into this novel. As well as more tender and emotional moments (yes some romantic but not all are).

I will say that I absolutely loved the last part of the story. It was great. This author can definitely write well developed characters, fun plots, and some sweet romance.

For goodness' sake, why was he still here?

"It's a lovely evening, is it not?" he said. Harriett almost laughed. Already he was commenting on the weather? Goodness, this conversation was certainly doomed to failure.

"Tell me, Lady Harriett, where do you hail from?" Apparently he did not prefer to walk in silence as she did. "Heaven, of course," Harriett quipped, causing him to chuckle...How irritating. "What about you, sir? Do you come from Heaven as well, or...someplace else?"

"To have courage does not mean you won't feel fear. It means you are willing to face your fear."

Those are just a couple of the quotes that I liked. Some humorous, and one thoughtful one. If you are a Rachael Anderson fan, I think you'll enjoy this one. This is book #3 in the Tanglewood series, and the final one, so it's time to say goodbye to these characters (unless of course you reread the books). I've enjoyed all three but still say that book one, The Fall of Lord Drayson, is my absolute favorite. Another great part about this book, is that we get a glimpse of all the main characters from the first two books and get a wrap up of their happily ever afters.

This is third in a series and characters from the second are frequently present. I don't think you need to read the second to understand or enjoy this one, but I may be biased because I hated it so much and want to give others an excuse not to go there.

I ended up liking this quite a bit, though much of that comes down to the ending. Harriett is awesome, but I already knew that from her brief appearances in the other stories. I liked her adventurousness and that she doesn't let being popular go to her head. I also liked that she had such strong support from her family and the confidence that gave her in dealing with others (i.e. she knew that they'd support whatever choice she made for marriage, including not making a choice any time soon). So her tolerance of Christopher was her own decision and she didn't need to balance outside constraints, only her own heart. This was a nice touch for a Regency Romance.

Christopher was much harder to like. Yes, he was easy going and his humor was very well-depicted so that you can see the joking and teasing and know that it comes from a place of good will. His inability to see the hurt his teasing sometimes gave was exasperating, though, and having him fail to grasp the pain he'd inflict brought me out of charity with him. As it did Harriett, really. We see enough of his charm and kind heart to understand Harriett falling for him and enough of his carelessness to understand her hesitation in giving him any more than she did.

But my favorite part (and what bumps this to the four stars) is going under a spoiler and I hate that. It's a light spoiler, though, so brave it if you can. I loved when

So this was a steady 3½ stars because Christopher was so exasperatingly clueless. But it pushed to a solid four on the deft wrap at the end. Anderson built all the right notes leading to that climax and then hit that climax right on the mark.

A note about Chaste: There's only a couple of kisses and they aren't long or terribly steamy. They were pretty outstanding, though, so this was very well-done.

I read a lot and there's not a lot more that causes me to hunker down and laugh, smile, and sigh than fabulous witty banter and a chase, of sorts. This is one that had me captured from the first mistake to the final page. And there are a few different definitions of the word pursuit, just so you know.

Christopher is a pretty clueless "gentleman," although if you were to ask Harriett, a gentleman he most definitely is not. He's a big tease and whether it's conscious or not, he pushes buttons better than a curious toddler. A former war general, he's good at strategy and is determined to employ some of these tactics with this feisty, intriguing, beautiful lady. On the other hand, Harriett is determined to drive this man mad with her sarcasm, tricks, and annoying behavior. The results are hilarious and I loved every minute of their interactions and banter.

Anderson is an author who can really engage a reader with her unique characters and situations. The characters become life-like and seem like dear friends and the events that occur are very interesting and entertaining. I know I'll never feel like I just wasted a few precious hours when I'm able to dive into one of her books and I always look forward to a new release. I absolutely adored this story and didn't want it to end--I loved it!

This was a very proper, fun regency romance. It started a little slow but then took off and I did not want to put it down. This is well written, this author knows how to write people well. This could be a real romance. I am pretty sure she wrote my husbands personality into the leading man. How many men are just like this. I loved how it all came together. I especially loved how honest and real Harriett got, in the beginning I wasn't sure I liked her much. This was very character driven. Not much action or adventure just a well written romance.

Rachael Anderson is one of my favorite authors no matter the genre she is writing in. Any day I get to read one of her books is a great day. I was really looking forward to this book because the previous two books in this series have been fabulous! You don't have to read this series in order as each book can stand alone easily, but I would recommend you read in order if you can. It just helps with loving the characters. :)

I was a bit worried in the beginning of this book because Harriett was such a brat! I thought, "oh no, I don't like her at all!" And in the beginning of the book, I really didn't like her. She was mean. Christopher was a bit oblivious, but not really deserving of all she dished out to him in the beginning. This started a bit of a war of sorts- each trying to up the other one because Christopher is not one to stand there and take anything. It was a bit amusing, I have to say. There was some excellent banter and some sparky moments of romantic tension. Harriett grew on me- especially as her softer side began to emerge. I loved Christopher from the beginning. He's a funny guy. And so very oblivious.

The ending was superb. There was such a build up throughout the book which made the ending ever so satisfying. I loved it. This book was engaging and fun the whole way through.

If you haven't read this series, you need to. It's so, so good!

This was a disappointing finish to an otherwise great series.

The protagonists were exasperating. Harriett (with two T's) was inconsistent, vain, and expected more from people than she was willing to give. The lieutenant, well.. there really was nothing to him. But, I will say out of the two, I liked him better. There was no storyline. The whole premise of the book was to watch two people bicker and annoy each other.

Frustrating. I'm just fortunate that this was available with my Kindle unlimited subscription. I recommend the first two in the series, and a pass on this one.

This wasn't a great choice for my first "To Marry a Handsome Duke" type of book for 2022. There wasn't much action and the romance fell flat. Harriett and Chris, the two MCs, do nothing but annoy and misunderstand each other over and over and over again. I was definitely on Team Chris more often than not. We were constantly told how witty, delightful, and smart Lady Hariett is supposed to be, but her actions more often showed her to be humorless, petulant, and kind of thick.

Here is the problem with the book in a nutshell:
Harriett didn’t know why she still held onto any expectations with regard to the lieutenant. It wasn’t as though he had ever done or said what she thought he ought to.

So Lady Hariett would do something annoying and decide that Chris should respond in a certain way or say a certain thing. And when he would NOT do or say that specific thing, she'd get have a hissy fit and huff off to her room. YAWN. There was no chemistry at all between these two and I never felt like they should end up together.

Really enjoyed this one! Oh the witty repartee, jokes, and pranks between these two who started off as combatants to becoming madly in love. I really liked that Chris loved Harriett for her inside character and mind and not just for her spectacular beauty that other men only saw. I hated that Chris had problems feeling comfortable expressing emotions and everything had to be a joke to him. I was like there is time for humor and there is a time to be serious and be honest about your feelings. Of course there wouldn't have been a conflict and drama to the romance if he hadn't been a comedian sometimes when he should have been serious. Of course our hero also has a redemptive arc where he has the epiphany to finally be vulnerable with his emotions. Boy does he do it in a big way! LOVE THAT ENDING!!!

Language: No profanity.

Violence: None. Chris was a naval lieutenant officer in the Peninsular War, but never describes what he saw and what happened to him or any under his command during the conflicts.

Sensuality content: Clean traditional recency romance. Kisses only.

This is a fairly by-the-numbers regency romance - in this case, two stars really does mean "it was okay." I think your enjoyment of this novel will depend on how seriously you can take passages like this one:
Tall and lean, his strong and broad shoulders supported a sturdy neck, and his eyes were the color of stormy gray skies. He parted his dark blonde hair down the middle, letting it rise and fall to each side like waves cresting and crashing in an unruly manner. It was an unusual hairstyle for a man, but it seemed to suit him. His closely-shaved mustache only added to his rugged masculinity.

Dude has a middle part!

But seriously, one of the virtues of this book is its sincerity. The writing is sincere in its depictions of the characters, particularly Harriett's longing for someone to see past her outer beauty to truly love her. Love, as represented here, is pure, and both characters need to overcome their fears about being truthful and sincerely confess their feelings to each other. If you are drawn into the book early and like these characters, you'll enjoy the read.

... and if you don't, you're out of luck. I found Harriett rather inconsistent and sanctimonious, and the lieutenant to be exasperating at best and annoying at worst. This zigzags between several tropes and doesn't do any of them that well . By the middle of the book, one of the key themes seems to be Harriett's search for her own talents and characteristics, which gets somewhat dropped in the lieutenant's sections as he rhapsodizes about how interesting and willful she is. There are a lot of adjectives thrown about to describe these two people, none of which rang very true to me, and by the end of the book both of them are not only unlikeable, but uneven characters. It's hard to care.

Also: I'm going to spend the next week inserting "During the war ..." into every conversation I have. ("During the war, I was frequently cold until my car heater warmed up.")

Loved it! The characters of Harriett and Christopher are vibrant, even in their flaws. The banter is oh-so-good, and I loved how they tease and one-up each other. Their interest in each other turns to attraction, which develops to deeper feelings. Harriett has certain expectations when it comes to romantic love which don't align with how Christopher keeps emotion at bay with a quip or diversion.
They brought out the vulnerable parts of each other, even though they are both attempting to protect themselves from hurt. The author struck a great balance between humor and heart, and I felt the angst and feelings of the characters through their highs and lows where they learn what they can accept in each other and what they must change in themselves. A great love story that shows the give and take necessary in a relationship.

Harriett has completed her first season and though it was a success, she didn't find anyone who captured her heart. She is visiting Tanglewood as she awaits the start of her second season, when Jonathon Ludlow's friend, Lieutenant Christopher Jamison arrives. He angers her, charms her, and generally confuses her. But can this man who loves a good joke ever be serious enough to capture Harriett's heart?

I enjoyed going back to Tanglewood again and glimpsing previous couples and how their lives were turning out. Harriett has appeared in the other books and I was glad to hear this was to be her story. She is such an interesting heroine who gets herself in a lot of funny situations as she tries to put the lieutenant in his place, yet he refuses to fit into her expectations. Some of those instances painted her in a petulant and immature light at first, but what will draw readers to her character is that she has a believable growth arc throughout the book that really redeemed her. I thought it was relatable that she had self-esteem issues and of course, couldn't read our hero's intentions very well which led to several misunderstandings between them. All of those misunderstandings heightened the angst of the story and made it so readers will be turning pages long into the night to see if Christopher and Harriett get their happy ending!

This was a fun, romantic, afternoon read, especially if you love Tanglewood and the world Ms. Anderson has created through this series. (Although this book can stand alone, you'll definitely want to read the other two if you haven't already!)

It's not often that a book begins with the female MC having mud splashed all over her when a man on a horse doesn't notice her on the side of the road. It was really rude. Then to find him at Tanglewood, the same place she is staying, it becomes intolerable. Christopher is annoying, rude, insensitive, etc. Of course, it is of no notice that he is handsome and has a brilliant laugh.

This is a fun book to pick up and set aside your worries and cares. It is full of humor, embarassment, and challenging wits. I love it when a book contains banter and a couple who are evenly matched. Of course, it begins as a challenge. Harriett wants to prove that she is better at something than Christopher, he seems to beat her at everything. She is stubborn and refuses to give up or in. It leads to great moments, like tree climbing.

The book has a great ending, proving that Christopher is really a gentlemanly catch. The book contains some mild kissing.

This book is so much fun! I laughed and at times was sad for the characters but mostly I laughed. There is battle of wills and wit and bantering back and forth, midnight cake, and matters of the heart. Harriett and Christopher are similar yet totally opposite at the same time! I loved every minute of their conversations! It just shows how some people struggle with showing feelings and how different we each are! Sometimes we will do whatever it takes to win the one we love!

If you love plotting for silly revenge, small dogs, rain, mud, ill tempered names, birds, midnight cake runs, ponds, horses, accepting others quirkiness, sonnets, climbing trees, clean reads, then this might be for you!

Regency romance. This story was fascinating yet
frustrating. I finally decided on 4 stars.

Lady Harriett (2 Ts), sister of an earl, wanted men
to see beyond her beauty & arrogant Lt. Christopher
Jamison, recently of the Royal Navy, came across as
light-hearted and seldom serious.

Chris started off by riding his horse too fast and un-
knowingly spraying Lady H w/ muddy water. Lady H
refused to forgive Chris who made light of several
instances of her hurt and/ or humiliation. She did
juvenile stunts to pay him back in kind. At one point
Chris admitted to himself that he was too long at
war and needed to be more considerate of ladies.
Lady H's BFF, Cora, equaled the voice of reason.

The push/ pull of the H+ h was @ times exhausting.
Besotted Chris compared wooing to warring (strategy)
& struggled with the words to use. We saw the under-
lying love. Enjoyed his clever, courageous gesture
toward the end.

I loved this book! I was so excited to be back at Tanglewood and read Lady Harriett’s story. She is such a vivacious young lady. Christopher was a great match for her. She wants to be seen as more than a pretty face, and he does that from the beginning. He sees all the wonderful things about her. The banter between them was great! I laughed and smiled throughout the book. I loved that what she saw as a battle between them, he saw as just enjoying each other’s company. He definitely confused Harriett, and I really felt for her. I loved watching her stand up for herself and force him to figure out his feelings. The ending was so sweet! He chose the perfect way to show her how much he cared.

This is one of my favorite series! And one I will definitely be re-reading!

I received a copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.

Lady Harriett is currently staying at Tanglewood while Cora and Jonathan are on their honeymoon. Lt Christopher Jamison, a friend of Jonathan is expected to arrive. Harriet can be there to greet him and tell him that Johnathon is already on his honeymoon.

However, while Harriett is out for a walk she sees this rider going break-neck speed and therefore doesn’t see her and splatters her with mud. Lt Jamison is told that Jonathan is not at home but he is convinced to stay by some neighbors who Harriett finds ensconced in the drawing room. Harriett is not happy about this development as she was hoping he would leave as he needed to visit his parents in London in a week.

Harriett is determined to ruffle the feathers of Lt Jamison as he is always besting her at something.

“Apparently, no matter what she said or how she behaved, Lieutenant Jamison was determined to think well of her. Was this another of his many attributes—to find something “delightful” in everyone no matter their intelligence or personality?”

The share in some wonderful witty banter and they challenge each other. I really enjoyed watching their relationship develop and grow and come to the realisation about how much they meant to each other.

This book, along with the others in the series was such a delight to read. Harriett was such a wonderful character; she is sweet but she also knows her own mind and fights for what she believes. Christopher is playful but also has a series side to him, he is dependable and gives Harriett the challenges that she needs.

This series has been such a surprise and I have loved all the books (I don’t know if the series will be continued after this one but I hope it does). I really enjoy the regency style of the book and the perfect book for when I am in the mood for some historical romance.

I have really enjoyed this series by Rachael Anderson. Characters from the previous 2 stories played roles in this book and it was a nice finish to the 3 book series.

In The Pursuit of Lady Harriett, my favorite aspect was the witty banter. Rachael Anderson must have had a fun time writing this story and dialogue. I was laughing out loud.

At the same time, there were parts where I hurt for Harriett. I was impressed with Harriett's strength and willingness to be open. She really made herself vulnerable. In contrast, as much as I found Lieutenant Jamison humorous, at times he annoyed me so much I wanted to throw something at him. He often acted so juvenile that I wondered how these 2 people could love each other. And here the author brought about a growth in character that made me smile. Lieutenant Jamison matured a bit at a time during this book to the point where I could finally see how these two would make a good match.

This book made me laugh, brought me to tears, and made my heart happy.

This is the eleventh Rachael Anderson work I have read and it was an absolute delight to read. This is a clean historical romance that was very well written with a story-line that kept me engaged from page one to the very end. I loved the interplay between Harriett and Chris that actually had me laughing out loud as she gave as good as she got. I wish I could give more than five stars to this offering as I rate this as probably the best of the eleven books I have read from her pen. I highly recommend Rachael Anderson for those who love clean historical romance because the bulk of my reviews of her work have rated five stars.

Three romance books in two days...apparently this genre is my cure to a reading slump haha.

I think this was my favorite book in the series. I love Harriett and I think she's such a fun character to read about. She was honestly very dramatic even when she didn't need to be, but that made the story really entertaining. And she was super open and upfront about her wants/needs which I really appreciated. (Admittedly, she did literally run away after doing that, but I'm still gonna give her credit.)

I will definitely be re-visiting this book in the future. While it's not a new all-time favorite I can see it being a good comfort read when I want something light and fluffy.

I loved this book! It was difficult to put down, and I thought about it when I wasn't reading. I enjoyed getting to know Harriett better and enjoyed seeing her relationship with Captain Jamison develop. This story had a great mix of lightheartedness along with some seriousness. I can't say enough about how wonderful this book truly is. It is well written, has great characters, and a wonderful plot line. I definitely want to read this book again and again.

In honour of this upcoming book that will be the last of this series, I decided to reread the two previous novels. That abolutely increased my love for this book/series, because you can read them all as standalones, but the best way to read them is by reading them in order. The same characters come back every book. In the end the second one is my favourite, but all three books are cute and easy to read.

In this book we encounter Lady Harriett who has not found her love during the last London season. While her friend is on honeymoon she stays in their house, waiting for the next London season to start and all is well untill another young man comes to stay there as well. This book was quite funny and I loved how it relates to the previous two books.

I would definitely recommend reading this series if you are a fan of a good romance novel!

I was disappointed. I reread the first two books in the series because I hadn't been able to get this one close to reading the other two. The first was still 5 stars for me but the rest of the series doesn't hold up to the charm of the first one. I liked Lady Harriett in her cameos in the first two books. She seemed strong, sure of herself, a true friend, etc. In this book she seems very insecure and constantly needing reassurance. Now that could be who she was all along but it didn't come across that way in her previous appearances so it was a let down because what drew me to her as a character and made me want to read her story just wasn't there. I didn't even like Chris that much either. He seemed like a jokester who didn't take things seriously. I'd only recommend the first book in this series.

If you are interested in clean, historical romance then I highly recommend the Tanglewood series. I have enjoyed this series so much and I am sorry to see it end. I don't want to say goodbye to the characters. I loved this story. It wasn't hate but more a one sided dislike to love turned romance. At first I was afraid Harriett's attitude towards Christopher was going to be annoying but instead I found it amusing. I loved Harriett and Christopher. They were so good for each other and I enjoyed their banter. It was fun watching them fall for each other. I will definitely reread the entire series in the future.

This book started out a lot slower than the previous two in the series. It was difficult for me to recognize the Harriett from book 1 and the Harriett in this book.

Personally, I wasn't captivated by the characters and their escapades did not intrigue me either. I wasn't opposed to the adventure, but it just did not tickle my fancy in the same way that the first two books in the series was able to do..

It is a clean story, stands on its own, and delivers an H.E.A.
