The Survivalist #10

National Treasure

Rate this book
Just when it looks like Deputy Marshal Mason Raines might finally settle into a life free from violence, he receives an emergency distress call from the New Colony. Not only has his handler been brutally attacked, but the life of a treacherous woman he once loved is also in danger. Forced to choose between contentment and duty, he must once again forsake his own happiness for the welfare of others. This time, however, he would be well served to remember that the motives of those being rescued are anything but pure.

Faced with an equally daunting challenge, Tanner and Samantha travel west to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Their goal is as simple as it is impossible: to rob the nation’s Gold Vault of all its remaining treasure. The trip takes an unexpected turn, and they find themselves recruited by an old woman eager to lay her husband to rest. But even that task is not without moral choices that have them questioning what it means to be one of the nation’s last remaining survivors.

Events have made me who I am, neither a hardcore survivalist nor an all-trusting soul. I am a Boy Scout in the truest sense of the word—dedicated to family, country, and good citizenship. As you may already know, an enabling element of those ideals is being prepared.

It took the horrific events of 9/11 to wake me from my routine complacency. In one single moment, I came to realize that our world is not as safe as we would all like to believe. We have no guarantee of safety in this world. Disasters occur on an almost daily basis all around the globe. Major events in recent years have included the devastating tsunamis striking Japan and the coast of Sumatra, the rash of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. in 2011, Hurricane Katrina, the deadly earthquake in Haiti, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to name just a few.

I believe with all my heart that we have a duty to prepare our families for the dangers they face. I started my preparation by reading nearly every disaster preparedness book currently available. If you check Amazon, you will see that I am the #1 reviewer for many of these books. Even with all the material out there, I could not find a single book that offered a complete, well-reasoned approach to practical preparedness. As a NASA engineer, I took up the challenge by conducting very careful research – disecting fact from folklore. Three years and many thousands of dollars later, I have finally released a handbook that offers well-researched advice that can be put into practice in the real world by normal families.

I wrote this handbook for my own family, but I would be honored to share it with yours. If you are not fully satisfied with the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family, send it back, and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.

[See the review of the whole series in the Book 1 entry, "Frontier Justice".]

Funny, coming back to this series after a long break, it had lost its magic. Before I was totally into the story, invested in the characters, etc.; now they just seem to be wasting their time on trivial errands while the world goes to pot. Much of the survivalist glamour has faded, with most things taken for granted and only occasional interesting flashes.

I reached p.132 (61%), when it suddenly hit me that the mere idea of an old man and a twelve-year-old girl stealing the gold from Fort Knox is inherently ludicrous! Not to mention the repulsiveness of the mutated plague victims, multi-breasted Mother, etc… Why am I wasting my time on this stuff?

So, sorry, Bradley, but you've lost your touch. Not interested in following this series any further.

Mason's sense of duty takes him back into the fray at the farm and he's back up to being neck deep in trouble when Mother's mutated army is on the rampage seeking revenge for their brethren being used as food in Locke's meal bars.

Sam and Tanner on their way to Fort Knox to check that the gold is still their have an equally hard time of it with events twisting and turning and Tanner's good deeds coming back to cause more trouble.

There is as always plenty of action, fighting and dying and the more time that Tanner spends with time, the more you see changes in him that certainly wouldn't have happened. Character development is good for all the main ones and the excuses for actions by secondary characters are things that make sense and though not quite to the extreme of the books content, the reasoning that people use now to justify their actions or lack of moral guidance.

There are some good morality stories to take from this along with the usual being prepared knowledge which are described so well you could apply them fairly easily and would just need practice to hone them.

Again for some reason, it seems the proofreader had taken a siesta though not as badly as he/she did for the previous book. It doesn't stand out too much but is annoying compared to how well done the first 8 books were.

No Need For A Review

If you have read the nine previous books you know the quality Bradley delivers and this one is no different.
As a husband, dad of two tots, a full time + employee, and grad student I don't have time to waste on weak storylines with shallow and predictable characters... The Survivalist series continues to reveal fresh twists and new depths for Raines and Co.
Can't wait for the next one!

Not bad. Unbelievably strong, unstoppable heroes, mutants, hot women... It's almost cliche but you know, sometimes you need something like that to read.
