Riley temp, twink, geek… sleuth?

Maybe Riley isn’t living up to his full potential, but being a temp executive assistant suits him. He’s never bored at work, he’s got friends who let him geek out, and he’s got a carefully crafted twink exterior… which might be getting constrictive now that he’s on the other side of thirty. Life isn’t perfect, but it’s comfortable.

It all unravels when he takes a job working for a tea-obsessed cosmetics queen, the owner of Gautier Cosmetics. During the launch party for a new product, Riley finds his boss dead under suspicious circumstances, and the homicide detective is none other than Tadeo Martin, Riley’s high school obsession who never knew he was alive.

Tad drafts Riley to get the scoop on the inner workings of Gautier, and for Riley, it’s like a drug. His natural inquisitiveness is rewarded with more and more Tad. Unfortunately, his snooping puts him in the running for two other suspect and victim. The killer doesn’t care which.

We meet Riley while he’s working as a high-powered executive assistant temp at a cosmetics company. From the beginning, the drama between the various characters at the company was apparent. Suddenly… his boss des and that changed everything. Because who walks in? None other than his high school crush, Tad. Now things really heat up. I really liked both Riley and Tad. Riley was smart and confident...even if he did apologize or felt he needed to justify why he was “only a temp” a tad too much. He was funny. Through all the drama, he remained true to his character all the while trying to find the bright side of everything. He was shocked to see his ex-crush walk in and find out that he was now a detective. Riley was more than skin-deep – and seeing his evolution with his own self-worth, his interaction with his family and of course, with Tad – was truly fun part of the story… especially along with the suspense. Tad’s character could have been a bit more developed, but that was more than likely the point of the story. Tad was a tough guy in school, but now he's been transformed into a cop, but he just can’t stop his renewed attraction to Riley. This wasn’t the most topsy/turvy, who done it story I have ever read... but there were a few very interesting twists. One of my favorite things about the book, was how everything fit together and tied up at the end. Nothing felt out of place or over-done, which is always welcome. This is a good book for anyone who loves the high school/adulthood plot line. It's also an interesting murder mystery with a delightful "Happy Ever After."

Tea for two and two for tea...me for you and you for me...

'Tea or Consequences' is a fun mystery with a side of romance and I really enjoyed this one. Set in the city of Toronto...you guessed it!!! CANADA!!!! Ok, that's my squee, I'll try and keep my inner geek under control from here.

Riley works for a temp agency as an executive assistant. He loves the challenge of what he does and the newness of working for someone different all the time and he's really good at what he does. So good that his latest position working for Gabrielle the cosmetics queen of Gautier Cosmetics lets him know that in no uncertain terms she wanted to keep him as her PA.

Everything's going really well for Riley...right up until his boss turns up dead and his high school crush turns up as one of the lead investigators on the case...Riley's well ordered life is suddenly thrown into chaos as he and Tad work together to figure out who wanted Gabrielle dead because there's no shortage of suspects with this case.

I liked the character of Riley. To say the least he's someone who's organized and efficient. You can't be a good PA much less a good temp PA and not have those qualities nailed down but I think what I love the most about this character is that he's representative of so many people who have found what they want to do in life and are doing it because it makes them happy and their lives are fulfilled not because they're meeting everyone else's expectations but they're meeting they're own and doing what makes them feel happy, successful and fulfilled.

Tad was a little harder to get a grasp on because for most of the story it wasn't clear whether or not Tad remembered who Riley was. Tad was also frustrating because of his reluctance to be in a relationship with Riley, not because he didn't want to be with Riley...in fact it more like the opposite Tad definitely wants to be with Riley but for him it's a conflict of interest in regards to his job and at the same time it also felt like he was using Riley to get information that he wouldn't have otherwise had access to for his case. The bottom line is that Tad may be trying hard to do what's right it's not without a price to both his and Riley's happiness.

As much as I enjoyed this story I do have to admit that it required a big suspension of belief when it came to some of what happened in this story. I'm not going to go into the details but let's just say in regards to the police procedures...it's FICTION!!! And this one really was built on that premise. In general this was a really entertaining story and I think a lot of that was due to the fact that the author didn't try to adhere to police procedures and it allowed them to use Riley in a more active role for the mystery part of the story and I mean more active as in...I'm not sure how the police would have solved this without him. This also facilitated Riley and Tad's relationship progressing as well.

The romance in this one was definitely a secondary factor in this story but at the same time it never got lost from the story...it just took a bit of a back seat at times but the connection was always maintained allowing the romance and the mystery to transition back and forth in terms of priority.

Darcy Stark was the narrator for this story and while he's not a new narrator...he's a new to me narrator and one that I think I need to check out a little more because based on this audio book, he's a narrator that I'm going to enjoy. His voices were unique, expressive and consistent. He added depth to the characters and the story making for a very enjoyable listening experience and story.

Set in Toronto, Tea or Consequences gives readers a murder / mystery with plenty of suspects and enough twists and turns to keep you wondering until the final reveal. At a new product launch party, company founder Gabrielle Gautier ("a sophisticated, glamorous woman in her midfifties who’d built a thriving company while raising two children as a divorced single mother") is found dead. Is it food poisoning? An allergic reaction? Or is it murder? Are Gabrielle's obnoxious entitled children Francois and/or Floriana involved? What about the new VP Cody? Or do the police suspect Gabrielle's temporary executive assistance Riley?

The premise of the murder/mystery is good, but there are some inconsistencies that bothered me, although if you don't spent an inordinate amount of time watching crime procedural shows like me, they probably won't bother you. However, I tired of Riley's amateur sleuthing at times, i.e. he is confused about the availability of penicillin and wonders: “Who would even have penicillin? I mean, it’s not the sort of thing that’s popular with drug dealers, is it?” Aarrgghh. Again, your results may vary ...

In addition, Tea or Consequences didn't work for me in the romance aspect. IMHO, Tad and Riley don't have a lot of sexual sizzle and because we don't get a lot of character development for either man, it's difficult to become invested in their romance. Also, Riley over-analyzes everything:
He liked the Bier Markt, but it wasn’t nearly as close to Riley’s condo as Alberto’s. Did that mean something? If so, what? He hadn’t heard from Tad since they’d kissed on Monday. Did it mean something that he’d waited until Thursday to contact him? If Tad wanted to date while having no-strings sex, wouldn’t Friday be a more appropriate date night?
Finally, I felt there were so many tangents and subplots that didn't really go anywhere, i.e. Riley's friend Shaun, family troubles with brother and his wife Meredith, Aaron Brown (Gabrielle's former assistant), Riley's gamer group, etc. that the romance got buried. Tea or Consequences was a miss for me. 3 stars.

Riley Parker is a temp to Gabrielle Gautier, owner of her own cosmetics company. He’s been working there for several weeks and he’s satisfied, but things get hectic when Gabrielle, a known tea junkie, dies at the launch party for their newest product.

There was discord with Gabrielle and her grown children—both of whom have positions of power within the company—which only heightens when they discover Gabrielle has a secret newly-wed husband, Cody, a man many years Gabrielle’s junior. Was there foul play? The police certainly seem to think there might be. Riley’s concerned. And distracted by the detective on the case, Tadeo Martin. Tad was two years ahead of Riley in school, and he’s even more gorgeous all grown up. Yep, Tad was a heartthrob for Riley back when he was lanky and awkward, but now, with his tinted contacts and highlighted hair, Riley thinks he might be worthy of his high school Adonis. If Tad swings that way…which he does.

I’m not sure if it’s the narrator himself, or if the author’s writing is not as polished in this story as in others I’ve read from her in the past, but I found this murder mystery to be quite elementary and often boring. Clues were very simple, and unless the narrator was emphasizing them as he read, they were quite evident to listeners. The style of narration was somewhat bland and several words were strikingly mispronounced, taking me right out of the story. So obviously, the narration did not add to my enjoyment of this story at all. If anything, it detracted from it.

The romance was unrealistic for many reasons. It was insta-attraction, but right from the start, Tad, the cop, said it could only be a quick hookup due to the case. Umm, unless Riley was shockingly gorgeous, that’s hard to believe. A cop shouldn’t even glance at a witness, never mind agree to a quick hookup. The whole setup was inconceivable. And then Tad constantly dropped by with lunch or invited Riley to dinner or a drink—it just didn’t jive with what he said.

And then, the high school angle was so irritating to me, and it only got worse as it was repeated throughout the book. Riley was hiding the fact that he knew Tad in high school when Riley was a geeky gamer and Tad was, of course, a popular athlete. Riley crushed on Tad but Tad had never looked twice at the geek. That trope might have worked if they were both in theie early twenties in this story but they are in their early thirties so the whole ploy seemed childish and immature. Who really still lives in their high school days in their thirties? To the point where it was obsessive. Grow up already. Sigh. Sorry, I digress.

I generally love this author’s work and I strongly suspect that the narration is responsible, in part, for my dislike of this one. The main crux of the story is a murder that takes place where Riley is working as a temp executive assistant. His boss is killed just before launch of a new product line and just before her secret marriage is revealed. In addition, she was about to announce her new husband’s new VP position in the company—a VP position in which he’d share responsibility with the other VPs who happen to be her two adult children. So lots of suspects abound. And Riley, an innately snoopy fellow, is enlisted by Tad to keep his eyes and ears open. Naturally, he takes it too far and is nearly killed for his snooping efforts.

I wish I had read this or listened to it from a different, more dynamic narrator. My hope is that the story is better than my perception, and looking at reviews from others who read the e-book version, it appears that they believe it is really good. So, if you enjoy this author and you like a light mystery and romance, try the book. I can’t recommend the audio version at all.

I am not sold on the romance part. Probably because everything is written from Riley's perspective, and I can't help to think it's a little bit one sided with Riley's old-crush over Tad back in high school. I don't really know how Tad feels -- it is muddled with whether Tad really stays contact with Riley because he likes Riley or because Riley is a wild card to find more clues inside the company.

BUT, I really enjoyed the mystery part!! It's been a while since I read a book with someone stumbled over a dead body indoor. And doing a little snooping as amateur sleuth. The whodunit plot definitely keeps me reading until the very end.

I liked the mystery side of this book, this alone made me stuck on my seat to read it. As for Riley and Tad's relationship, well, I was kinda wanted to shake Tad a whole time to put sense into him! But I think after he explained it to Riley, I understood his 'reason', but still.
Tad and Riley's relationship is a slow burn, not that I'm complain, but this kinda a bit of clean romance. I can't find a 'real' steam on page, there's sex of course, and kisses, lots of kisses.
Not the kind of romance I expected, but I can breath through the end, at least I know that Tad has passed his stupidity in relationship.
Enjoyable, especially for the mystery.

Riley Parker is an administrative assistant that works specifically for senior executives. He works for a temp agency because he gets bored easily and likes to move around a lot. He had just been working at Gautier Cosmetics for 3 weeks when he finds his boss dead.

The detective that is on the case is none other than Riley’s high school crush Tadeo Martin, or Tad now. Riley is stunned stupid in the first interview, but who wouldn’t be after finding a dead body, when he first sees Tad. He plays it cool like he doesn’t know who he is and answers all his questions.

Now at this point I think I’d quit. I mean if I could get hired on at a different company through the temp agency there’d be no doubt about it. I’m gone. But, no, Tad not so bluntly asks Riley to snoop around and get the inside scoop of the ins and outs of the place. Really?! Sorry, but that’s Tad’s job. Riley being nosy though accepts the offer of sleuthing for him.

Next thing we know Tad and Riley are on a date and yes it was a date! Poor Riley doesn’t know what’s going on and Tad is leading him around like a puppy.

I really wished we could have gotten Tad’s POV, so I could know what was going on in his head. I needed that because all I know is that I thought Tad was a jerk. But, I’m sure he wouldn’t have been if I knew was going on in that brain of his.

There was definitely more of the case here and less romance and I wanted more romance. The whodunit was nice, but I didn’t feel the connection between Riley and Tad because they were working too much.

I also wanted more interaction between Riley and Jonathan. I think Riley should have made him grovel a little more than we saw. I could have used more of THAT story and less of the Gautier Cosmetics one.

Overall, this wasn’t my favorite KC Burn, but it did keep me guessing.

REVIEW OF AUDIOBOOK; DECEMBER 23, 2017
Narrator: Darcy Stark

After a promising start, ToC fell flat for me and while I can easily give the romance 4 stars, the murder mystery was meh all the way. My feelings about the book is the opposite of Ami (her review) - she wasn't sold on the romance and loved the murder mystery. I, on the other hand, found Tad's attraction to Riley pretty clear from the get-go and all those "dates" that Riley wasn't sure were dates or part of the investigation, were so glaringly obvious to me, as is always the case when we aren't the involved party! Every time Riley questioned Tad's motive, I wanted to slap him up the back of the head because, c'mon, no cop/detective who is on the case involving you would buy you dinner, breakfast, bring dinner to you, press his leg against yours at the diner (or was it a restaurant?) and not like you, as in want-to-get-in-your-pants kinda 'like'! In fact, Tad was so into Riley he did the no-no when it comes to murder investigations - tell Riley, a witness, everything about the investigation. I was, frankly, aghast, used to, as I was, to the usual "no comment as this is an ongoing investigation."

I found the murder thread lacking in suspense and lost interest several times. The author's attempt to explain why Tad was sharing information about his investigation so freely with Riley was unconvincing (because he didn't consider Riley a suspect, nor did his partner). Burn should have given me Tad's POV as well and show me why he didn't consider Riley a suspect when even Riley himself saw how easy it could be to view him as one.

So, in the end, as a romantic suspense, ToC failed for me, and its only saving grace was the relatively angst-free romance between Tad and Riley - even the problem of Tad getting together with a key witness was resolved without much trouble. I didn't have a problem with that as I was in the mood for an free-and-easy romance so the quick resolution the author gave was fine with me.

The narration was problematic for about a third of the audio because Darcy Stark was gulping breaths at the end of every sentence! Ugh. I guess someone must have told him and the rest of the audio was de-breathed and I was able to finish the audiobook. I really do wish studios would de-breath their audiobooks, ie, the breaths that are not part of the character script.

I fared much better with the author's Toronto Tales and Galactic Alliance, though sadly, the 3rd installment of GA, Voodoo 'n' Vice. never made it to audio.

Audiobook review

I quite enjoyed listening to this story. It might be a story we’ve heard variations of countless of times before. But that doesn’t mean we can’t listen to it again and again. Because there’s something about that secret high school crush coming back into your life, turning it upside down that’s appealing. And personally, when you add in a murder mystery, I’ll be jumping of joy.

Riley loves his work as a temp executive assistant. His boss might be very strict and demanding, but he loves the challenge and variation his job offers. That is until he finds his boss dead in her office, making everyone he works with a suspect. Added to that, his high school crush Tad seems to be the detective in charge of the case. And him.

The two had chemistry, you could feel that right from the start. Watching them dance around each other was entertaining – especially with Riley being on the oblivious side in the beginning. Early on Riley insert himself into the investigation, he is a natural snoop after all. And it did get him into trouble more than once. But luckily he had a knight (detective) in shining armour (badge) to swoop in to save him. The mystery and investigation wasn’t always credible, but they were entertaining, so I didn’t mind in the least.

It wasn’t only the main characters that I like, there were a few secondary characters that I fell for as well. Especially Cody. His grief was the most palpable for me. Theirs was a love that never would have been easy, constantly being judged and frowned upon by others, still they stayed the course. I wished they’d had more time together.

I only have one complaint and that was that last chapter. It was too neat for me. Sure we got that HFN that I wanted for these guys. They deserved it. At the same time I don’t feel it was all that believable. The red bow was a little too shiny for me. Then again, this was a romance novel, so I’m not sure it could have ended any other way.

Darcy Stark really enhanced this story. He lived in it and he made the listener live in it too. I loved how he made the characters and events feel real. I loved how he made Riley’s voice squeak or break when he first met Tad, it made me smile. It’s those little things that might seem unimportant, but they do so much for an audiobook. It shows that the narrator goes that extra mile to enhance the production.

Tea or Consequences is definitely a book to pick up when you are looking for something low on angst with a murder mystery to spice things up.

M/M Romance
Triggers: Murder
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

This was a fast paced, who did it story. At first, I was kind of skeptical because it seemed that it was more about the spoiled kids of the great Gabrielle.

Riley had a major crush on the police detective who is investigating his boss' death, Tad. Riley has a fairly good life and he likes what he does. Working for a temp agency allows his scenery to change. It seems that the one regret in his life is his relationship with his brother. Jonathan raised Riley for a while and now, despite wanting more from Jonathan, Riley doesn't really know how to break through Jonathan's awful wife. I wanted to do some bodily harm to her and Jonathan.

Tad is a hard working detective who doesn't seem all too comfortable in his own skin. However, while investigating a murder, he runs in to an old school acquaintance - Riley. Tad knows that he's crossing some boundary lines, but he can't see to keep away from Riley.

The mystery within this love story is a good one and keeps you guessing. Once the main characters figure out that they can't be without each other, it's fairly typical.

Overall, this was a good mystery with a good romance woven in.

A murder mystery with an m/m romance subplot. It was interesting, though I found it slightly too easy to identify the culprit, though it is about at the level of difficulty to solve for a cozy mystery. The final reveal of the culprit was a bit hurried, but at least it was free of monologuing. I did like the characterization and found the two MCs likeable and interesting.

There are too many misused words and grammatical errors, to the point that I found distracting from the good points of the book. The pacing was good and the steam-level for the romance was about right considering that was a subplot.

So, in summary, I found this a good-but-not-great cozy mystery.

Enjoyable, a bit predictable, but with enough twists and turns for a few second guesses, I did get the right person from the start though.

My first M/M book. Well written. I had to get used to the descriptive male/male scenes. Really liked the story. The intrigue of a murder and finding out "who dun it" was wonderful. I love how KC Burn writes - drawing you into the emotions of the moment. Feeling what Riley was going through. Again, very well written.

This was hard to rate because I absolutely loved the mystery! It had me intrigued and turning the page to try to figure it all out and I didn't. Lots of suspects, fun twists and turns and one of the best mysteries I've read. However, the romance just didn't work. It was a bit out of left field in the beginning and it was a bit too hot/cold for me. On top of that it ended up being instant and with a contrived ending that was clearly written so the two could be together.

Kinda loved the temp getting in on the mystery of who done it, the cop pulling the no strings card due to Riley being part in the ‘case’ didn’t fly with me. It got extra points for being set in a Canadian city and it involved tea. Would have liked some more character development, especially with the supporting characters, and more of reunion between Riley and his brother.

Riley Parker works as a temp for Gabrielle Gautier, owner of Gautier Cosmetics. Being a temp suits Riley just fine, he gets to move on to somewhere new whenever his contract finishes, so he never gets bored or frustrated with being in the same place or working with the same people, and it also pays well. But deep-down Riley is a geek at heart, he’s always been this way since high school, and loves nothing more than joining his friends for gaming days/nights. Riley may still be the same inside since high school, but on the outside, he’s made some big changes. He’s changed his style, dyed his hair blonde and wears blue contact lenses to change his eye colour, but his love-life is still practically non-existent. In the few weeks that he’s been with the company, Riley has become close to the receptionist, Alisha, and they have formed a good working relationship and friendship. And although some people find Gabrielle hard to work with, Riley really enjoys being her assistant, she’s even got him interested in her favourite drink, Tea. Gabrielle’s children, François and Floriana, are VP’s of the company and like to make clear their distaste for most of the staff, especially Riley, and some of their mother’s plans and ideas.

Riley’s parents died when he was twelve, so his older brother Jonathan raised him, but they don’t have much in common due to their age difference, and they’ve never been very close. That distance has increased over the last few years because of Jonathan’s wife, who Riley doesn’t get along with. So apart from his friends, Riley is pretty much alone in the world, but he’s okay with that.

When Riley discovers Gabrielle’s dead body in her office on the night of a launch party, he’s overcome with shock and grief, but when the police arrive to investigate, Riley is even more surprised to find that the detective assigned to the case is none other than his high school crush, Tad. In school, Riley was often picked on by Tad’s friends for being a geek, and also out and proud, but it didn’t stop him fantasising about the things he wanted Tad to do to him, even though he knew there was no way it would ever happen. Riley couldn’t be more glad that his appearance has changed since school, that way Tad won’t remember him, and he can pretend he doesn’t recognise Tad either, even though just seeing him has made all his forgotten desires and fantasies come rushing back.

Due to the investigation forcing Riley and Tad to work together to find out what happened to Gabrielle, Riley begins to crave attention, contact, and time with Tad. He thinks that if he can snoop around and try and find some clues as to what killed Gabrielle, then he has an excuse to meet up with Tad to pass on the information, without it looking like it’s because he’s attracted to him. Only, Riley didn’t plan for the fact that Tad would be the one who made excuses for them to spend time together, and in that time together, Tad seemed like he was interested in Riley’s life, not just the investigation. When their relationship makes the change from witness and detective to friends and lovers, Riley and Tad need to do what it takes to keep their liaisons secret from everyone around them, while trying to find out what caused Gabrielle’s death. But keeping feelings and relationships hidden is easier said than done when Riley gets caught up in the crossfire.

I loved this book, the story was really enjoyable and interesting and had me completely hooked. I was really impressed with how the story spun and who the killer turned out to be because I was thinking it was going to be someone completely different. The author has done a fantastic job putting this storyline together and writing realistic and believable characters. I really don’t think there’s a negative thing I can say about it.

If you want a book that will captivate you and have you thinking the whole way through, then this book is right up your street, it’s a perfect little whodunnit.

4 Super Fun and Sleuthy Stars
I didn’t really know what to think about this book from just the blurb, but I was… intrigued. We meet Riley while he’s working as a high-powered executive assistant temp at a cosmetics company. From the beginning, the drama between the various characters at the company was apparent. And suddenly… his boss’s death changes everything. Because who walks in, other than his high school crush, Tad. And from there, things really heat up!

First, I really, really liked both of these characters. Riley was smart and confident (even if he did apologize or “justify” why he was “only a temp” a bit too much) – and he was funny. Even through the drama, he remained true to his character and tried to keep finding the bright side of everything. His almost swoon over seeing his ex-crush walk in as the detective, was perfection. Riley was more than skin-deep – and seeing his evolution with his own self worth, his interaction with his family and of course, Tad – was truly fun to read… especially along-side of the suspense. Tad’s character felt a little less developed – but that was likely due to the POV of the story. He was a tough guy in school… transformed into a cop who just can’t stop his attraction to Riley.

Now, I will say… this wasn’t the most topsy/turvy/twisty/who done it story out there, but there were a few interesting twists. One of my favorite things about this book, was how everything fit and led up to the end of the story. Nothing felt out of place or over-detailed, which is a welcome surprise! This is a great book for anyone who loves the high school boomerang plot line, an interesting murder/mystery and a delightful HEA through a lot of turns.

Riley is happy working as a temporary executive assistant. He goes in, gets the job done, avoids all the office politics, and leaves while everyone’s still smiling. I actually envied him this and wished I thought of it when I was working in the corporate world. Anyway, he takes a position in a major cosmetics firm and enjoys working for the owner, a ruthless businesswoman who doesn’t want anyone to see her soft side.

When she’s murdered on the night of a big launch, there’s a whole room full of potential suspects including Riley—who found her—and her kids, two ansty, graspy, unlikeable characters. Enter Tad, former classmate, one-time crush, and the detective on the case. Riley doesn’t think Tad remembers him and the circumstances of their reunion aren’t great, but it doesn’t stop those old feelings from resurfacing. This all made for a great whodunit, some steamy romance and a happily ever after that, if we were skimming the surface, would have been very satisfying.

Sometimes, I wish I could stop there, but my first WTF moment was when Riley went back to work. Like, dude, you just found a dead body, it’s time to put that temp role to work and move on. But no, he went back and started digging around. Not only that, he reported his findings to Tad who encouraged him (say what?). And of course, they get into a “no we shouldn’t, yes we should” sexual relationship that was as hot as it was frustrating. Not because they were breaking all sorts of rules (like, the list was LONG), but because when it came down to “are we more than hooking up?” Tad used it as an excuse to back off. Oh no, we can’t, you’re a witness. Having encouraged Riley into that role, he lost me there and I wasn’t all that interested in seeing Riley forgive him.

That said, this book was entertaining with interesting and sometimes amusing case of side characters, and a mystery that kept you going back and forth between the two standout suspects.

I received an ARC of Tea and Consequences from the publisher in return for an honest review.

Review can be read at It's About The Book

Riley works as an Executive Assistant through a temporary service. He's working for the head of a family cosmetics' company. During a launch party, Riley finds his boss dead at her desk, and Riley's life becomes crazy. The detective sent to interview him is someone he went to school with, Tad, and who Riley had a crush on. Through the investigation, Riley meets with Tad over dinner to share information he's come across since he's decided he's in the perfect spot to investigate from within the company. Riley is confused by Tad wanting to meet over dinner and paying for dinner. He's attracted to Tad and is unsure if they have a professional relationship or if it's more.

This story was more of a mystery and less of a romance. I thought the mystery was well done, and it kept me guessing throughout the book. There were twists, turns and secret husbands to keep my mind engaged. And you may think you know who the killer is but you'll probably be surprised when everything comes out.

This story is told completely from Riley's POV, and in this story, it felt like a disadvantage. I liked Riley and I think he's really shortchanging himself by being in a relationship with Tad. Because we don't get Tad's POV, I'm not sure what his thoughts are but it really seemed that he was using Riley. He ran hot and cold; his words saying he only wants a professional relationship between them but his actions saying something different. I didn't like Tad and I don't think that opinion ever changed.

It's hard for me to say this is a HFN or HFE when the MC's didn't actually become a couple, or whatever, until 97% into the book. But, again, I really think this is a mystery book that just happened to have two characters come together at the end of this story.

When I read the synopsis for this I was so on board. It sounded majorly intriguing. Murder, mystery, and mayhem. What’s not to love?
This is told entirely in Riley’s POV. That was interesting. He’s a temp working as an executive assistant to Gabriella Gautier, boss lady extraordinaire. It’s no secret that she’s the murder victim in this. We read that in the blurb. I didn’t realize we’d actually get some page time with her. That was awesome.

I paid attention to everything she said and did in the short time she was here and I have to say, when it came to the discovery of the who, what, where, when, and how, she was pretty vital.

Riley, he’s wonderful. I wasn’t sure he’d be able to carry the whole book but he did. The detective on the case is his old high school crush. Riley looks a lot different than when he was in high school but Tadeo doesn't and he still does it for him.

So much of this story is the murder mystery. Yes there’s sweet romance but I didn’t feel like it was the main focus of this story. At one point I wasn’t sure Tad and Riley actually would get together in the end. The chemistry seemed to be there a little, but for a while I just was like, “If it happens it happens.” It just didn’t call to me as something that needed to be. It wasn’t until the last 20% of the book that these two starting clicking for me.

I loved Riley though. His friends, all the adventures he goes through while trying to find a killer and not be their next victim.

If you LOVE whodunits then I really do feel like this is an awesome book for you!

I really enjoyed this!

I always love a good murder and romance and this one had just the right amount of both! When Riley finds his boss dead, he soon finds out that the death is suspicious and the biggest suspects are the very people he continues to work for. Wanting to help the detective (and his high school crush) Tad, Riley begins snooping around.

Riley's snooping was very believable, which is not something always pulled off in this kind of mystery book. Riley uses his job as well as a fair amount of know-how and know-who around the company to get by where he needs without bumbling about. I was interested in each direction that he took and was guessing all along who it was an was not disappointed by how it all turned out!

The romance was equal parts cute and sweet with hot and sexy mixed in. Riley is dealing with a huge high school crush and those thoughts come flooding back in, which has a bit of puppy love to it. At the same time he has the experiences of an adult and those lusts, so he has plenty of heat in his feelings toward Tad. When the two get together they spark, but they also have very sweet simple moments that I enjoyed.

This was an excellent book with the added bonus of a setting close to home that I really enjoyed! The characters were great and the mystery was a lot of fun with a good bit of danger. Great book!

Audio Review
I love this cover. I can see this as Riley.
Tea or Consequences is a great who-dun-it mystery with many characters to choose from. Riley is a temp assistant to a busy corporate woman. She has two children a son and daughter both working in the company, There is a receptionist that becomes his friend and a secret younger husband.

The investigating officer happens to turn out to be Riley's first crush, Tad. Riley helps to find the real killer and clear his name putting himself in danger.
There are so many twists and turns here and the story is fast paced keeping you wanting to turn the page or in my case listen till it's over as I did.

Darcy Stark is a new to me narrator but won't be a stranger. I loved his mellow voice, the pacing was fabulous and he had distinct voices for most of the characters.

3.5*
I did enjoy this, a closed room type murder in that the suspects are employees at a company launch party.
Riley is the outside guy, working as a temp who becomes embroiled when he discovers the body and then the lead detective, Tad, is an old school mate (though they were not friends then).
Riley really is super temp, the assistant we all need. But his amateur sleuthing is a bit haphazard!
The story is only told from Riley’s pov so we don’t get the thoughts of the other characters - this works well for the murder as we don’t know who is innocent or guilty, it all has to come from their actions.
On the romance side, it means that Tad comes over as remote - does he like Riley or using him (both are a bit ethically dodgy to my thinking!)
My two culprit options were wrong but with plenty of twists towards the end (and a TSTL hero) there was still a few Aha moments.

TEA OR CONSEQUENCES by KC Burn

Riley Parker: temp, twink, geek… sleuth?

The murder of Parker’s boss brings in homicide detective Tadeo Martin, Riley’s former high school obsession. TEA OR CONSEQUENCES is an enjoyable M/M romantic adventure where Riley’s natural inquisitiveness puts him in the running for two other roles: suspect and victim. The killer doesn’t care which. A suspenseful MM second chance love romance with Jessica Fletcher spin makes this book a delightful read. I received this copy from the author, and this is my honest review.
