I have been personal training women since 2008. It is my mission to bring incredible confidence and pride to women all around the world. We all deserve to feel great about ourselves. Everyone always says change your life today, but no one ever provides says how. My life goal is to provide the how to as many women as possible.
This book is more of a cookbook than an in depth analysis about habits and so forth. There is a lot of styling, pretty pictures and lots of recipes. aka instagram in book form. It's factually correct, but perhaps brief on the science. I am a nerd so I do prefer science, but totally get this isn't her background, I recommend "the doctors kitchen" podcast for anyone wanting to nerd up about nutrition btw (It's free go on).
There are sections on addressing a few common barriers to exercise, and eating well. They are brief though. For me without sleep working out and eating well is near impossible and it was nice to see that reinforced in the book. It also had some good tips regarding the importance of meal prep in actually sticking to a diet plan. This surprised me a little because her meal plan has always been out of reach for me because I work 50-60 hours a week and it's not in any way practical to be cooking multiple meals today which you might be tricked into with her "28 day meal plan". Her recipes look delicious though, and I look forward to incorporating a few into my repertoire.
i have followed some of kayla's online workouts and find them really intense and beneficial. i've also followed her instagram for years as well, so i thought i'd pick this up when i saw it at the library. she's not my "go to" exercise guru, and i've never liked her style well enough to purchase her app (which is HUGE by the way, lots of followers) and use apptive and peleton app workouts instead. after reading this book i might give her a go though.
the health motivation i found lacking and what was there could be skipped. the true jewel of this book is the recipe section. it should be marketed more as cookbook, and if i were her agent, i would insist that the next one be a cookbook without any of the health inspo.
colorful photos and fun layout...seems to be marketed towards's those in there 20's-early 30's. i hope a more mature, food based version is in the works.
Wow. I don’t know where to start. This is by far one of the worst cookbooks I own and is a huge disappointment as I was hoping to have some good, tasty, easy recipes to swap out on days with the first book. Nope. All I got was suggestions like ‘Apple Doughnuts’ and more and more smoothies. Mango, Mint and Macadamia Salad? Fruit Sushi (it’s literally fruit stacked on top of rice)? Are you serious? And some of the recipes such as the fattoush salad are nearly carbon copies from the first book. Some of the recipes are so in-depth and use almost every spice that’s sitting on your rack, yet somehow still manage to taste very average and in some cases extremely bland. The constant use of lentils throughout recipes is bothersome and her guide provides no information on a decent alternative to lentils. A cookbook designed to provide extra recipes for those who use the BBG, however it merely shows how out of touch Kayla and her partner are with their customers. I’m sorry, but many of your readers are average women working full time and don’t have a $200-300 grocery budget per week to spend on food. Never have I owned a cookbook with so many expensive, unappetising, time consuming recipes. This was nothing but another money grab. With the negative experiences I’ve had in dealing with this company directly, I should not be surprised.
Without reading her first book, I think some people would be lost reading this one. Like everyone here has said, the photography is incredible. Kayla's recipes again are easy to follow -- I learned so much about different marinades for meat, holy wow! The sections on motivation and habits are good, though, I wish they were a little more fleshed out instead of being an overview. I am super duper pumped though that this book comes with WEEKLY GROCERY LISTS!! HALLELUJAH! Makes cooking for the whole week so much easier! Overall, this is a good guide and it's easy to follow. I love her approach to nutrition and her emphasis on the "WHY" you're wanting to embark on a healthy/fit lifestyle for yourself.
If this were marketed as a cookbook I would have rated it higher - the recipes and plans are excellent (most include gorgeous photos), and the workout descriptions are brief but thorough. The rest of the book seemed unnecessary - a full page picture of Itsines on every other page and motivation/habits information that was very basic and would not be new to anyone who's read anything about it (fluff, as one reviewer described it... yes). But! If you're looking for a workout plan with meal/recipe suggestions, this is a really great start - I just wish it would lay flat (why don't all cookbooks lay flat??). I haven't read or subscribed to anything else from Itsines so this was my first introduction to her plan.
This book is visually good to look through. The photographs are clear. There are plenty of charts that are designed to inspire you to be "motivated." Will this work? If you have reader looked through fitness books in your life, this one is not going to offer new information but as I stated, it is a easy to read or flip through.
I've never read her blog or previous book, so full disclosure on that, I'm not a pre-existing fan. And probably won't be checking it out any time soon. This was mostly fluff. I think that the useful content for motivation and habits could have fit in a small booklet. The vast majority of the pages were filled with recipes, and a TON of photos of her in skimpy exercise wear.
I've read a lot of fitness books in my time but Kayla's is the only one that has a direct approach to not only weight loss but overall health and nutrition. I was excited to see how she deconstructed each method making it easier to understand so the reader can follow her approach better.
Very informative. Motivation is probably the hardest part of making any kind of lifestyle change and it is broken down very simply in the book. A must read if you have trouble with lifestyle changes.
I enjoyed this book a little bit more than the author's first book. I found the tips and insights into motivation and creating long term motivation more helpful for sustaining long term change.
I'd better not elaborate on my rating, I'll just get angry all over again. Stay away from this program if you want to look "toned". Read "Strong Advice" by Zuby if you're a beginner. Tom Venuto's books are also good. Susan Niebergall and Jordan Syatt know their stuff. In Germany we have Sjard Roscher and Mark Maslow. Whatever you do, stay away from fad programs like this!
