Edelie Flummox runs a flower shop in the Haymill neighborhood in Brooklyn along with her two sisters. Not that she’s particularly interested in flowers, or running a store. Edelie is, after all, a witch, and feels she should probably be doing witchy stuff instead of playing store. Unfortunately, the Flummox triplets are not exactly the world’s most competent witches, and their grandmother has decided to strip them of their witchy powers to save an unsuspecting world the aggravation. When one of Edelie’s neighbors is murdered, and handsome local cop Sam Barkley proves clueless, she decides to look into the murder herself, and try to catch the killer. Soon she’s in way over her head, hounding suspects and ferreting out clues. And when the houseguests of her grandmother’s new bed & breakfast prove unusually annoying, it looks like Edelie and her sisters don’t even need witchcraft to make life very complicated for a lot of people. Witchy Start is the first book in the humorous Neighborhood Witch Committee cozy mystery series. It follows the Witchy Fingers series, which introduced the Flummox triplets, and is complete at four books. You don’t need to have read Witchy Fingers to enjoy this new series, however, as it stands alone.
Nic has a background in political science and before being struck by the writing bug worked odd jobs around the world (including but not limited to massage therapist in Mexico, gardener in Italy, restaurant manager in India, and Berlitz teacher in Belgium).
When he’s not writing he enjoys curling up with a good (comic) book, watching British crime dramas, French comedies or Nancy Meyers movies, sampling pastry (apple cake!), pasta and chocolate (preferably the dark variety), twisting himself into a pretzel doing morning yoga, going for a run, and spoiling his big red tomcat Tommy.
He lives with his wife (and aforementioned cat) in a small village smack dab in the middle of absolutely nowhere and is probably writing his next ‘Mysteries of Max’ book right now.
The Flummox sisters are not my favorite Nic Saint characters. To tell the truth they irritate me sometimes. But this new series in which they are floundering about after having their powers removed by their Grandmother seems to show promise of improvement. They are more focused on the murder mystery which to me was a problem with the original Flummox sisters series; they were all over the place. I think this new start for the sisters was a great idea, and a great time to change the time a bit. Overall, the mystery was entertaining which is all I can ask.
One of the most evil and nastiest persons in New York is found in church with the huge wooden cross on to of, having fallen off the wall. Was this a random act of God or did some one murder her. The sisters start to in estimate all those neighbors that Mrs. Peach tormented past and present. Grandma Cassie has a priest staying at the B&B. Will the girls find out why Mrs. Peach ended up dead? You will have to read to find out.
A very enjoyable book. What do you do with witch’s who cause havoc whenever they try to use magic? Well these three witch’s had their magic taken away by their Grandmother who got tired of correcting their mistakes. Add murder to the mix and you have a fun book. You never know what will happen next or what trouble will befall the town when the three sisters are around.
Cute paranormal, romantic murder mystery. Triplets, inept young witches whose powers had been had been taken away by their grandmother, manage to get into trouble without their powers. A fun read.
It's a really fun read. I would recommend this series of books to anyone who likes lighthearted mysteries. It is delightful and will read more from this author.
This is a great fun book with a good murder, lots of zany sluething and some romance. It hilarious, can’t wait to see where it all ends in future books
The witches are a strange lot but, their cousins are even stranger. This is a good read for such a quirky bunch. It was easy though to pick out who the murderer was
The Saints rarely disappoint , and this was no exception. The sisters still have no powers and feel they are being treated unfairly by their grandmother. After all, solving murders would so much simpler if they could just use witchcraft. I thought that the characters were well developed. The story line had enough twists to keep your interest, and the ending was a surprise. What more could a mystery buff want. Worth reading.
