راز مادرم رمانی است به قلم جی ال ویتریک، داستان زندگی خانوادهای چهارنفره لهستانی است که در آستانه جنگ جهانی دوم در آلمان زندگی میکنند. یک پسرو دختر به نامهای هلنا و دامیان که پدرشان مکانیک و مادرشان آشپز یک خانواده ثروتمند آلمانی است. هیتلر در ۳۰ ژانویه ۱۹۳۳ صدراعظم میشود. مادر خانواده معتقد است که باید به لهستان برگردند اما پدر علاقهای به این کار ندارد چون فکر میکند بازگشت به کشوری که از آلمان عقب افتادهتر است کار احمقانهای است اما زن به همراه فرزندانش به لهستان بازمیگردد و در زادگاهش خانهای کوچک و تکه زمینی برای کشاورزی میخرد. غافل از این که جنگ با آنها چه خواهدکرد

Once in a while a book comes along that makes you want to be a better person . This is a moving , beautifully written novel based on the true story of Franciszka Halamajowa and her daughter , Helena , who saved Jewish families in Poland during the German occupation . It's impossible to describe the unbelievable courage and humanity of these women who risked their lives for others because they believed it was the decent thing to do . It is a small book with enormous heart and hope and I cannot recommend it more highly .

What an amazing story But this is a fictional account inspired by the courage of Franciszka Halamajowa and her daughter Helena. The characters in this novel are fictional but a lot of the events are true with the happenings at the time.
Its an amazing story but unfortunately I found the writing very childish and disjointed and wasn't sure exactly what was real and what was fictional until the end where the author does explain in her Epilogue.
Five stars for bringing this story of two remarkable and courageous people to my attention. Franciszka and her daughter Helena risk their lives to shelter Jews in Nazi occupied Poland although the penalty for doing so is the death sentence and yet they saved the lives of 15 people in their tiny home.
I love reading stories of ordinary people in times of war who go above and beyond to make a difference and what a difference these two people made and it is heart warming and inspirational to read stories like this.
However while this book is a moving story I felt the writing was a bit of a let down. Character development was poor and the story felt quite disjointed. While I know the characters were fictional I couldn't get a sense of any of them and really felt there could have been so much more to each of these characters. The book lacked a sense of time and place also and this was disappointing also.
However at the HEART of this novel is a remarkable true story of two amazing and courageous women who put the needs of others before their own and not only did they save 15 people they probably saved hundreds as those 15 people have probably gone on to have families populate the world all because of Franciszka and Helena.

Having read this inspiring book in one sitting, I am overwhelmed with emotion and hope. This fictional account of a true story of two women's heroic actions to save two Jewish families and a German deserter during WWII restores and deepens my belief that there are angels among us. And I'm thankful that on a whim I picked up this short, poetically written novel because I've needed to have my faith restored with all the turmoil and tragedy in our world. I've read so many Holocaust novels, but this tiny book captures the horror, fear, bravery, moral decency and love that the people who endured this horrific war experienced.....at least in this one corner of Sokal, Poland where 6000 Jews perished. As humans we are capable of unimaginable savage cruelty but as this book demonstrates...also great love, bravery and sacrifice for our fellow human beings.
There is a plaque and a tree at the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem honoring Franciszka Halamajowa and her daughter, Helena. Those who helped the Jews escape execution during the Holocaust are recognized as "the Righteous among Nations"......indeed they were.
My deepest wish is that this novel shows up on every required reading list in our schools.

در این روزهایی که کشورم در میانهی یک دوران گذارِ سخت است—گذارى که با همهی طاقتفرسا بودنش میدانم و ایمان دارم موقتیست—طبیعی است که آدم دلش بخواهد برای چند ساعت به چیزی آشنا تکیه کند؛ چیزی که بتواند ذهنش را آرامتر کند و ریتم روز را کمی قابلتحملتر.برای من، برگشتن به «راز مادرم» دقیقاً همین بود.
اینبار که سراغش رفتم، دنبال کشف دوبارهی داستان نبودم؛ دنبال همان حس آرام و آشنایی بودم که از اولین خوانش در ذهنم مانده بود.شاید چون در چنین دورههایی، آدم بیشتر قدر چیزهایی را میفهمد که بیصدا کنار آدم میمانند و حضورشان خودش آرامش است؛ چیزهایی که نه برای فرار، بلکه برای یک لحظه فاصله گرفتن از آشوب کافیاند. «راز مادرم» برای من یکی از همان حضورهای آرام بود.
روایتگری، چندصداییِ روان و خلاقانه، بدون سردرگمی:
یکی از برجستهترین نقاط قوت کتاب، شیوهی روایتگری چندلایه و چندصدایی آن است. ویتریک داستان را از زاویهی دید شخصیتهایی روایت میکند که هرکدام بخشی از گذشته را در خود حمل میکنند؛ اما این تغییر صداها نه ناگهانی است، نه گیجکننده.
نویسنده با دقت و خلاقیت، روایتها را طوری کنار هم میچیند که هر صدا، قطعهای از پازل را کامل میکند—بدون اینکه چیزی لو برود یا خواننده احساس کند از وسط ماجرا شروع کرده. این انسجام و چینش دقیق، کتاب را از بسیاری از رمانهای چندروایتی امروز متمایز میکند؛ جایی که تغییر زاویهی دید معمولاً باعث گسست میشود، اما اینجا تبدیل شده به نقطهی قوت.
در همین بخش، جملهی مهمی از کتاب هست که بهنظرم روح روایت را روشن میکند:
«مادرم میگوید: اگه آلمانی باشی و کسی بهت بگه تو برتر متولد میشی، معلومه حرف قشنگیه و خوشت میاد. از اینم بهتر اینه که بهتون بگن اگه روزگارتون بده به خاطر یهودیاست و تقصیر شما نیست. مردم این چیزا رو بهتر قبول میکنن تا دلایل و توضیحات منطقی.»
و بعد ادامه میدهد:
«نه همهی آلمانیها خوبن، نه همشون بد. یهودیا هم همینطور.»
این نگاه، هم عمق اخلاقی روایت را نشان میدهد، هم ظرافت نویسنده را در پرهیز از قضاوتهای کلی و سادهسازیهای خطرناک.
مفاهیم: لایههایی که آرام و بیصدا در ذهن مینشینند
ویتریک مفاهیمی را در دل داستان جا داده که بدون شعار و بدون تحمیل، در ذهن خواننده رسوب میکنند:

نه بهخاطر خشونت یا روایت تاریخی، بلکه بهخاطر انسانیت آرام و بیصدایی که در دل داستان جریان دارد.کتاب نه میخواهد شوکه کند، نه قهرمانسازی کند؛ فقط میخواهد نشان دهد آدمها چطور در دل تاریکی، نورهای کوچک خودشان را پیدا میکنند.
جمعبندی: کتابی دربارهی حقیقت، انسانیت و انتخابهای کوچک
اگر بخواهم خلاصه کنم:
«راز مادرم» کتابی است دربارهی اینکه حقیقت همیشه ساده نیست، انسانیت همیشه پررنگ نیست، و انتخابهای کوچک آدمها—در هر دورهای از تاریخ—میتواند سرنوشتساز باشد.ارزش خواندنش فقط در روایت روان و منسجمش نیست؛
در یادآوری این نکته است که حتی در سختترین دورانها، نگاه انسانی و فردی میتواند راهی برای ادامه دادن باشد.

For me, returning to My Mother’s Secret was exactly that.
This time, I wasn’t looking to rediscover the plot; I was looking for that calm, familiar feeling that had stayed with me since my first reading.
Maybe because in times like these, one learns to appreciate the things that stay quietly beside us—things whose very presence is a kind of comfort, not as an escape, but as a brief distance from the chaos. My Mother’s Secret was one of those quiet presences for me.
Storytelling: A Smooth, Multi‑Voiced Narrative Without Confusion
One of the book’s strongest qualities is its layered, multi‑voiced storytelling. Witrick narrates the story through characters who each carry a piece of the past within them; yet these shifts in perspective are neither abrupt nor confusing.
With precision and creativity, the author arranges the narratives so that each voice completes a piece of the puzzle—without revealing too much or making the reader feel as if they’ve been dropped into the middle of the story. This coherence and careful structure set the book apart from many contemporary multi‑narrative novels, where shifting perspectives often disrupt the flow. Here, it becomes a strength.
There is a passage in the book that, to me, captures the moral core of the narrative: “My mother says: If you’re German and someone tells you that you were born superior, of course it sounds nice and you like hearing it. Even better is when they tell you that if your life is hard, it’s because of the Jews and it’s not your fault. People accept these things more easily than logical explanations.”
And she continues:
“Not all Germans are good, and not all are bad. The same goes for the Jews.
This perspective reveals both the ethical depth of the story and the author’s refusal to fall into broad generalizations or dangerous simplifications.
Themes: Layers That Settle Quietly in the Mind

روند داستان شتاب زده بود و اونجور که باید نتونستم با شخصیت ها ارتباط برقرار کنم. عدم پرداخت به جزئیات (حتی سطحی) به روایت شدیدا لطمه زده.

اینکه در بحبوحهی جنگ، زمانی که بعضی انسانها از انسانیت دست میکشند و به نهایت پستی و شقاوت میرسند، کسانی هم وجود دارند که با به خطر انداختن جان خودشان و خانوادهشان به کمکِ کسانی که در خطر هستند میشتابند و از هیچ چیزی در این راه دریغ نمیکنند،نوید دهندهی این است که همیشه و هنوز خوبی و انسانیت وجود دارد ❤

گاهی ما به دیگران خوبی میکنیم چون خوبی “ در دسترسمونه” و هزینه زیادی برامون نداره
اما آیا اگر بخاطر انسانیت لازم باشه جونمونو به خطر بندازیم میکنیم این کارو؟
لازمه این فداکاری داشتن ایمانه. ایمان به اینکه کاری که داری میکنی درسته. دقت کنید این ایمانی که دارم میگم ریشه مذهبی نداره و دستور ارباب آسمانی نیست. بلکه یه تفکر مقدس بشریه. که همین عجیبتر میکنه داستانو. چون بیشتر کسایی که حاضر میشن ریسک کنن جونشونو با یه باور مذهبی تغذیه میشن در کنارش که بهشون وعدههای جذاب میده
اما آیا ما حاضریم برای چیزی که “خودمون” انسانیت میدونیمش و حتی نزدیکانمون اسمشو میذارن «حماقت» ، جونمون رو بذاریم در طبق اخلاص؟
این کتاب پره از افرادی که آدمای خوبیان، اما جنگ باعث میشه یه کاور ضخیم بکشن روی روحیه همنوع دوستی
جنگ با آدما چیکار میکنه؟ چند درصدمون واقعا میتونیم به تمام اصولی که بهشون افتخار میکردیم پایبند بمونیم در حالیکه برای قدم به قدمی که برمیداری باید حساب پس بدی به دیگری؟
کدوممون شجاعت فراتر رفتن از اون قالب سه در چهاری که برامون ترسیم کردن رو داریم؟
فرانچسکا داشت
زن بینظیری که با این که یهودی نبود در دوران جنگ دوم جهانی جون ۱۵ یهودی رو نجات داد
روایت جالبیه از زندگی فرانچسکا، دو خانواده و یه سرباز که در پناه خونه فرانچسکا نجات پیدا میکنن
شاهکار نیست ولی کتاب گیراییه و احتمالا تو یه نشست میخونیدش
اما آیا اگر بخاطر انسانیت لازم باشه جونمونو به خطر بندازیم میکنیم این کارو؟
لازمه این فداکاری داشتن ایمانه. ایمان به اینکه کاری که داری میکنی درسته. دقت کنید این ایمانی که دارم میگم ریشه مذهبی نداره و دستور ارباب آسمانی نیست. بلکه یه تفکر مقدس بشریه. که همین عجیبتر میکنه داستانو. چون بیشتر کسایی که حاضر میشن ریسک کنن جونشونو با یه باور مذهبی تغذیه میشن در کنارش که بهشون وعدههای جذاب میده
اما آیا ما حاضریم برای چیزی که “خودمون” انسانیت میدونیمش و حتی نزدیکانمون اسمشو میذارن «حماقت» ، جونمون رو بذاریم در طبق اخلاص؟
این کتاب پره از افرادی که آدمای خوبیان، اما جنگ باعث میشه یه کاور ضخیم بکشن روی روحیه همنوع دوستی
جنگ با آدما چیکار میکنه؟ چند درصدمون واقعا میتونیم به تمام اصولی که بهشون افتخار میکردیم پایبند بمونیم در حالیکه برای قدم به قدمی که برمیداری باید حساب پس بدی به دیگری؟
کدوممون شجاعت فراتر رفتن از اون قالب سه در چهاری که برامون ترسیم کردن رو داریم؟

روایت جالبیه از زندگی فرانچسکا، دو خانواده و یه سرباز که در پناه خونه فرانچسکا نجات پیدا میکنن
شاهکار نیست ولی کتاب گیراییه و احتمالا تو یه نشست میخونیدش

داستان در لهستان در زمان جنگ جهانی دوم میگذره
من داستان هایی که به این برحه زمانی برمیگردن رو دوست دارم و موضوعش رو هم دوست داشتم
برخی رمان های مشابهی خونده بودم تو همین موضوعات که خب خیلی قوی تر بودن
این یکی نسبتا معمولی تر بود و به نظرم داستان جای کار بیشتری هم داشت برای پردازش اما در کل تقریبا خوب بود

«این کتاب بر اساس داستانی واقعی از زندگی فرانسسکا هارامایووا نوشته شده است. فرانسسکا و دخترش هلنا، جان پانزده یهودی را نجات دادند. قبل از جنگ جهانی دوم شش هزار یهودی در لهستان بودند؛ تمام آنها کشته شدند جز سی نفر! نیمی از این سی نفر را فرانسسکا نجات داد.»

This is a good time to read about decent people who did the right thing, not for personal gain, but because it was the right thing to do. A story based on a mother and daughter in Nazi occupied Poland during WWII who hid 2 Jewish families and 1 German soldier who had deserted, all unbeknownst to each other. They all survived the war after 20 months in hiding.
This was such a simply written book that it would be perfect for middle graders who are learning about WWII.

عشق تنها چیزی است که آن را بیشتر از وقتی دادی دوباره دریافت میکنی...
چه کتاب تلخ و غم انگیزی،نفرین به جنگ و خودخواهی آدمها...
این کتابمن رو با خودش برد به عمقهولوکاست و فجایع وحشتناکیکه دولت ها به سر مردم بی گناه آوردن!
اما با خوندن سرگذشت هلنا و مادر فداکارش فهمیدم که هنوز انسان های قوی و جسور وجود دارن.
این کتاب به حدی شاهکاربود که من هنوز هم بغض دارم از خوندنش
نمیدونم چقدر ادبیات جنگ میخونید اما این کتاب جزو عالی ترینهاشه

خیلی فشرده و تلگرافی داستان از زبان چهار نفر روایت میشود.
این داستان بر پایه یک زندگی واقعی در جنگ جهانی دوم نوشته شده و میتوانست از لحاظ شخصیت پردازی خیلی بهتر باشد ولی انقدر روایتها خلاصه و کوتاه هست که لطمه وارد شده.

از داستان هایی این چنینی که از زندگی واقعی افراد الهام گرفته شده خیلی لذت میبرم.
نویسنده خیلی خوب تونسته بود با اون حجم کم داستان هارو به هم مرتبط کنه.

I read this book in two sittings but I made myself take a couple of days before attempting to review. It is one of the hardest ratings I've ever had to make a decision on. (not the written review itself, I'm simply saying the number of stars it deserves) I'm going to call a spade a spade here. If I was an English Prof. and I was grading this manuscript for a creative writing class I think I might have sent it back for many, many revisions. As it is written I would have had to assume the intended target was lower middle-grade students instead of adults. However, I would have been puzzled because the themes and how they were handled was definitely not entirely suitable for impressionable middle-grade students. (Maybe US 7th grade and above would be ok with some of the scenes). However, the language and sentence structure is honestly about a 5th grade level and even then not a very challenging read. (again not content)
So, you're probably wondering why I gave it 5 stars then aren't you? I'll also say here I'd have given it 100 if I could have!!
I do not know for certain the reason the author wrote this book with such simple mechanics and language. I've seen the argument since finishing that it was purposely simplistic to let the story shine and not the words. However, I read the book with the mindset that the author is not really an author by trade or training but she so desperately wanted to tell a story. (After finishing this book I learned my assumptions were probably accurate). The author simply felt compelled to write a fictionalized story based an a true-story and get it into reader's hands. The true-life story behind this book touched her profoundly and she tried her hand at writing a book. I say kudos to her. If you read this with that mindset you will see just how beautiful the story is. I was so touched during one particular scene that I had to close the book for the night otherwise this could easily have been read in one setting. I don't want to spoil that scene for others but I'll just say the incident that sucked the breath from my lungs did so despite years and years of reading Holocaust and/or Genocide based literature. I have extremely thick skin and have seen and lived through a lot but I thank our dear God in heaven that I cannot truly imagine what it was like to be in that mother's situation. (I'm crying just typing this!!)
I plan to have my 14 year old son read this book. As much as his father and I would like him to love reading, he simply does not. He will only read when he's forced and that's certainly not fun for any of us. He just finished a elective history class in his school that was all about the Holocaust. In that class they were required to read "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom. I have not read the book so I can not be sure of it's suitability for him or how it compares with this book but I can say HE struggled and hated it. I wonder if this book would have been a better for him? Perhaps all of the kids? (of course, I really think the kids should have read both!) The only sense worthy criticism I could get out of him was that "The Hiding Place" felt too preachy. I laughed because this is came from a child in Christian school. But then after reading My Mother's Secret it dawned on me that perhaps this story that was not faith based would actually have been a better fit for him. It showed situations straightforward as they were. There are characters who are not necessarily Christian but still doing what God would want them to do. The same characters were sometimes shown to be doing things God would not necessarily want for them. There were flawed characters. There were devout characters. There was divorce. The was a bit of romance. It also touched on the fact that evil walks in many forms too. Maybe that's what he needed! He needed to see the goodness in the world is not only done by Christians, and he needed to be able to relate to the characters in the book he is reading.
Ok...just read this book! Overlook the simplicity. Just absorb the meaning!

"I always thought that courageous people were those who were not afraid. Meeting Franciszka and her daughter, I realize that courageous people are afraid like everyone else. They just act despite the fear."

A wonderful "true" story of a woman and her daughter who harboured Jewish families at their farmhouse during Poland's occupation from Nazi Germany. The lady, and her daughter were not fictional. The story however is somewhat fictionalized. You'd think from the reviews this book should be, or was the top book of 2013. It's a heartwarming story, has no unique aspect from literally thousands of stories along this topic in print, and is written by a woman, who writes like she is a young teen. Chapters are short, choppy, and simplistic. The style of writing suggests the writer has no experience writing, except perhaps children's books. So disappointing. Character development was almost non-existent. I see either an author who truly wanted to write this book because it resonated from her heart, or someone who wanted to make some money. I doubt we'll hear from her again.

The writing is almost sophomoric which, in my opinion, is in sharp contrast to the subject matter. The books is told in 4 points of view... Helena who helps her mother hide these families, Bronek head of his family hidden in the pigsty, Mikolai a young boy hiding w his parents in the cellar, and Vilheim a German soldier who defected.

«آدمها مثل آب توی تالاب هستند. شما نمیتونید کف تالاب رو ببینید؛ فکر میکنید خیلی کم عمقه اما فقط وقتی که شیرجه بزنید، میتونید بفهمید، عمق واقعی آب چقدر زیاده.»
داستان کتاب درمورد خانوادهای هست که مادر نقش محوری داره. زنی که در جنگ به دوست و دشمن پناه میده!
درمورد جنگ جهانی کتابهای داستانی زیادی خوندم و با اختلاف این کتاب «خوشترین پایان» رو داشت. با وجود اتفاقات تلخی که در داستان افتاد، تقریباً مثل سریالهای ماه رمضونی با عروسی و سفرههای دورهمی تموم شد و حیرت کردم از این حجم هپیاندینگ در یک داستان با اتمسفر جنگ! اصولاً جنگ ــ بالاخص جنگی به وسعت و قساوت جنگ جهانی دوم ــ هیچ پایان خوشی نداره! بعد که درموردش خوندم، فهمیدم داستان بر اساس واقعیت هست و پایان انقدرها هم رویایی نبوده و نویسنده از اتفاقات تلخ در امتداد داستان قلم گرفته! و این به نوعی توهین به رنج و عذاب جنگدیدگان هست!
با این حال یک مقدار خوشی هم ببینیم، زیردلمون نمیزنه! و داستان جالبی بود. البته با توجه به اینکه از روی واقعیت نوشته شده، نویسنده نقش چندانی در خلق داستان نداشته و صرفاً روایتگر این داستان بوده که از پس همین کار هم به خوبی برنیومده.
چند جمله و پاراگراف جالب داشت؛ بعضیها واقعاً وصلهی ناجور کتاب بودند و به زور جا شده بودند و بعضی دیگه به شدت روی داستان نشسته و دلچسب بودند.
اما چیزی که بیشتر به چشم میاومد، کوتاهی جملات و فصلها بود. حتی خود کتاب نسبت به بازهی زمانی طولانی روایت و تعدد شخصیتها بسیار کوتاه هست. از ابتدای داستان فکر میکردم که این کوتاهیها هدفمند بوده و نویسنده قصد رسوندن پیامی رو به ما داشته یا صرفاً در حق داستان کوتاهی کرده!؟ به جوابی برای این سوال نرسیدم، اما حتی اگر هدفی هم در پس این جملات رباتگونه و منقطع کردن و مثله کردن فصلها بود، باعث از بین بردن احساس همدردی با شخصیتها شده.
داستان پتانسیل بسیار زیادی برای تحریک احساسات و به درد آوردن قلب مخاطب داشت. در واقع هر داستانی که در فضای جنگ و زیر سایهی مرگ و فلاکت نوشته میشه، چنین پتانسیلی داره؛ اما نویسنده نه تنها ذرهای ازش استفاده نکرده، بلکه تمام احساس بالقوهی داستان رو لگدمال کرده بود.
در طول کتاب چند بار حیرت کردم از شدت بیاحساسی کاراکترها! چه طور میشه مرگ عزیزت رو، پارهی تنت رو ببینی و خم به ابرو نیاری! بله جنگ، جنگه و مرگ در جنگ چیزی عجیبی نیست! شاید نشه مثل زمان عادی سوگواری کرد، ولی دو قطره اشک که میشه ریخت؟ یکم آه و ناله که میشه کرد؟ با همین فضای جنگ جهانی، کتاب «سگ از اشمیت» رو خوندم؛ احساسی که شخصیت اول داستان به یک سگ ولگرد داشت، از مجموع احساساتی که در این کتاب در و بدل شد بیشتر بود!! در این داستان طوری مرگ خانواده و اطرافیان براشون بیاهمیت بود که انگار جسد رو بکاری تو خاک، بهار سال بعد هفت تا ازش درمیاد!!!
درمورد نویسنده اطلاعات زیادی در دسترس نیست از جمله سال تولدش، فقط در این حد فهمیدم که تایوانی هست و کانادا زندگی میکنه. کاش درمورد حمله ژاپن به تایوان مینوشت. از جنگی که حتی اگر ندیده بود؛ اثر و تبعاتش بر زادگاهش رو احساس کرده. به جنگهای جهانی در شرق کمتر پرداخته شده و نوشتن ازش میتونست حرفی برای گفتن داشته باشه اما انگار نوشتن از کلیشه سرباز آلمانی دلرحم، ایده بازاریتری هست.
کتاب رو با خوانش مترجم، خانم سمیه نصرالهی گوش دادم؛ این چند وقت انقدر کتاب با ضبط استودیویی گوش دادم که خوانش طبیعی با تپق زدن و غلط خوندن از یادم رفته بود! اما در مجموع قابل قبول بود.
اگرچه برای من لذتبخش نبود و بیشتر حرص خوردم که چرا انقدر سردستی و بی حوصله نوشته شده، اما با توجه به ریویوها، این کتاب برای بعضی از دوستان بسیار دوست داشتنی بوده. پس کسی رو از خوندنش نهی نمیکنم، اما قطعاً پیشنهادش هم نمیکنم! مشابه این اثر، کتابهای بسیار خوبی در فضای جنگ جهانی وجود داره که در اولویت هستند.

You run across a book now and then that just hits you directly in read feels. Yes, I know - it's a fictionalized story based on true accounts in recounting the history of the bravery of Helena and her mother Francszecki Halamojawa. The names of others were changed. It's the account of what transpired and the end result that are the factual foundation this story is built upon.
Do any of us know exactly how brave and courageous for Helena and her mother to hide Jewish families ( Helena did not know that there were 15 in hiding in their small, unassuming farm. She also hid a Nazi ( in uniform only ) soldier . All he (Helmut) wanted, was to go home and farm (like his savior) and take care of his Oma (German for Grandmother- who raised and taught him right from wrong. Which is probably why he couldn't shoot another human, nor could he shoot an animal)
All in all, at one time there were 6,000 Jews in the small town of Sokal, Poland. But by 1945 there were were only 30-- 15 of which Helena and her mother saved by hiding them..
Can these atrocities ever be repeated? Does history really repeat itself? Will we sit back , keep our mouths shut, turn a blind eye to what's going on directly under our noses? Do any of us know exactly how brave and courageous for Helena and her mother to hide Jewish families ( Helena did not know that there were 15 in hiding in their small, unassuming farm. She also hid a Nazi ( in uniform only ) soldier . All he (Helmut) wanted, was to go home and farm (like his savior) and take care of his Oma (German for Grandmother- who raised and taught him right from wrong. Which is probably why he couldn't shoot another human, nor could he shoot an animal)
All in all, at one time there were 6,000 Jews in the small town of Sokal, Poland. But by 1945 there were were only 30-- 15 of which Helena and her mother saved by hiding them..
Can these atrocities ever be repeated? Does history really repeat itself? Will we sit back , keep our mouths shut, turn a blind eye to what's going on directly under our noses? And keep our ears deaf to the howling of the pain, the injustices committed against humanity?? Because to remain silent and do nothing, is the true evil of sin.

With simple prose, J.L Witterrick has written a stunning novel of bravery and sacrifice during World War II. Franciszka is a Polish cook with two children married to a brutal Ukrainian seduced by Hitler's promise of prosperity. She leaves him to move back to Poland to live with her children, selling eggs to the locals. Like a diary, we watch the horror of the war unfold and new characters are introduced. There is a poor Jewish family, a wealthy Jewish doctor and his family as well as a war weary German soldier. All their stories intersect, their destinies knitted together as their lives are saved by the courage of a Franciszka and her daughter Helena. This is a book that teaches us that heroes come in all sizes from heartbreakingly thoughtful children, to women who willing to sacrifice their futures as well as their very lives, to stay true their values. A quick but intense read, this book captures the spirit of "Righteous among the Nations" and is a testimony to their courage. J.L. Witterrick is a master of understatement, with a deft hand on knowing that her spare, but intense chapters tell a profound story of the human spirit. Well done!

This book is one of the most beautiful I've ever read. While it's set in the time of the Holocaust, there is love, joy, compassion and profound bravery. This is a novel, but it is based on real people, a woman and her daughter, who saved 15 people from death despite the many difficulties and sorrows of their own. This will make you remember how good people can be, how amazingly resilient they are, and what even just a couple of people can do to truly change the world. This book renewed my faith in humanity, and I will put this book in as many hands as I possibly can.

بعضی از وقتها با شنیدن یا دیدن فداکاری و مهربانیهای مردم، احساس میکنیم ما هم دوست داریم اینطور باشیم. موقع خوندن کتاب راز مادرم کاملا این احساس به من دست داده بود.
داستان درمورد یک مادر و دختر لهستانی هست که طی جنگ جهانی دوم به تنهایی جان ۱۵ یهودی(درست نصف تعداد یهودیهای نجات یافته بعد از جنگ) رو بدون توجه به مذهب و عقاید اونها نجات میدن؛ اون هم زمانی که نتیجهی پناه دادن به یهودیها اعدام بود. یکی از افرادی که فرانچسکا هالامایوا بهش پناه داد یک سرباز فراری آلمانی بود! جالبتر اینکه این داستان یک روایت واقعیه.
وقتی که قسمتهایی رو از زبان خود خانوادههایی که نجات پیدا کرده بودن میخوندم، ارزش این کار فرانچسکا و دخترش برام دو برابر میشد. فرانچسکا پسرش رو در جنگ از دست داد ولی این باعث نشد کینهای به دل بگیره و با این وجود به هر شخصی که بهش پناه میبرد، چه آلمانی و چه غیر آلمانی، کمک میکرد. یکی از بهترین کتابها درمورد جنگ بود که تا به حال خوندم.
این یک تکه کیک معمولی است اما او ماههاست که چنین چیزی ندیده است. میگوید: "بابا، این خیلی بزرگه. دوستش دارم اما دوستم ساری هیچ وقت همچین چیز خوشمزهای نداشته، برای همین میخوام فردا کیک رو باهاش تقسیم کنم."
اولین چیزی که به ذهنم میرسد این است: "نمیدونی برام چقدر سخت بود که اینو برات پیدا کنم؟ نمیدونی همهی ما گرسنهایم و اینکه تا جایی که میتونی باید برای خودت و خانوادهت غذا ذخیره کنی؟"
با اینحال از اعماق وجودم به او افتخار میکنم. دلم میخواهد به جنگ فکر نکنم و به او بگویم: "والتر، تو خیلی مهربانی و بهت افتخار میکنم." اما ما وسط جنگ هستیم و برای زنده بودن باید خودخواه باشیم. به عنوان پدرش چهکار باید بکنم؟
میگویم: "ساری خیلی خوششانسه که دوستی به مهربونی تو داره." از لبخند زیبایی که تحویلم میدهد میفهمم که کار درستی انجام دادهام.
معتقدم شخصیت او باارزشتر از یک تکه کیک است. نمیخواهم جنگ کاری که با ما میکند با والتر هم بکند.

Tem uma excelente classificação, é baseado numa história real, lê-se num ápice, tudo ingredientes para um livro memorável... Mas faltou-lhe algo, nem eu sei dizer bem o quê... :(

Although the writing is very simple and spare, the subject matter is anything but. It is not often that one reads a book about the holocaust and finds it life affirming, appalling too, but that is not the overall tone of the book.
Taking her daughter and her son, leaving her husband, an avowed supporter of Hitler, Francisca returns to Poland from Germany. The Germans invasion of Poland touches their town of Sokal and soon Jewish policies are enforced and all are moved to the ghetto.
She would eventually hide two different Jewish families and one young eighteen yr. Old German soldier. Just because it was the right thing to do. We hear from her daughter, the soldier and the two men of the families. In this town which once had 6000 Jews, only thirty would survive. Franciska saved fifteen. How amazing and this is based on a true story and a real person.
This book is more about the message because the tone is rather informal. It is told in a very unemotional way and in a way I felt it kept me from feeling connected to the characters. The book was easy to read and it was wonderful reading about someone who helped with no question or soul searching.

Having grown up listening to stories of the Holocaust and the things that people had to do to escape the brutality of the Nazis, when I was approached to review this book I knew I had to. There's something that is amazingly powerful and beautiful about the stories that come out of this moment in history.
I must say that this book follows suits of all the other stories I've heard or read. It is written in a way that seems to flow through the mind as you read the words. It is beautifully crafted.
I love how you get more than one perspective- allowing you to see the different stories and ways things are looked at differently. This is a great book to get older children and YAs introduced into the nit and grit that was part of the Holocaust. But that doesn't mean that is should be limited to youths. I'm 28 and I enjoyed it.
This is a powerful, amazing story that everyone that has any interest in the Holocaust should read. It's beautiful!

پنج✨ نه چون خارج العاده بود بلکه چون دوستش داشتم
کتاب خیلی قشنگی بود از امید و جنگ و ترس و شجاعت
تمام تضادها در کنار هم کتاب از چند دیدگاه و چند شخصیت اصلی روایت میشه و هر کدوم با عنوان ها مختلف و کاملا متفاوت داستان خودشون رو تعریف میکنند و می گذرانند ما بر واقعیت جهان جهانی دوم در لهستان آشنا بشیم
اولش که خلاصه کتاب رو خوندم با خودم فکر کردم خدای من چرا خانواده اصلی به لهستان برگشتند کاش درون آلمان می مونند اما در طول داستان فرشته هایی رو دیدم که تنها لباس انسان داشتند
کتاب رو بخونید هم کوتاه و هم مفیده و مطمئنم پشیمون نمی شین همین دیگه
