Nagisa and Karma travel to the International Space Station in hopes of learning the secret to saving Koro Sensei’s life. Then, when academic setbacks lower the spirits of his students, Koro Sensei comes up with an ingenious—or perhaps idiotic—way to cheer them up. Next, Valentine’s Day arrives! 18 of 21 volumes done, and what is more improbable:

1) the teacher, Korio Sensei, is a many tentacled monster who loves to teach?
2) who is all-powerful and super smart?
3) who must be assassinated or he will destroy the world?
4) who teaches his lower track students how to excel on their exams?
5) who teaches them the best skills for killing him?
6) who is loved by his students even as they know they must kill him to save the world?

or

7) that I would read 18 volumes of something so ludicrous?!

This volume features a sort of dumb space mission briefly hijacked by the (middle school) students, and sets up the Final the action for the final 3 issues, reveals a couple villains, but is MAINLY about romance, and pausing in the (continuously attempted and consistently failed) mayhem to see that two teachers we were hoping would get together. . . oh, I can't say (blushing).

From orbital heights to the depths of obsessive hatred, this volume has it all. Even Valentines Day chocolate! Yes, we’ve arrived at February, and the world will supposedly be destroyed in March unless class 3-E can finally assassinate their teacher. No pressure or anything. Things definitely seem to be moving toward a climax. The bond between teacher and students is stronger than ever. And at least a few relationships are deepened …

The cover of this volume is absolutely beautiful. I love the Koro Sensei sakura blossoms. This volume also contains the first real narrative misstep that I’ve seen from this series. So some of the tension and conflict stems from the fact that Koro Sensei is so darn likeable, and an excellent teacher to boot. We want the students to succeed, but their success would seem to mean his death. And if they don't succeed, the world is doomed. Honestly, both of those options suck as far as endings go. Somehow, Matsui was going to have to come up with another option. And this volume sets up a possible scenario, but it's kind of just handed to the characters in a rather deus ex machina fashion. It's not a bad idea, and it would definitely make for a fitting conclusion. I just wish it had been set up better. As it is, it's a little on the hurried side, and Matsui’s pacing is usually so spot on. It's not going to ruin my enjoyment of this series, and, with three more volumes (that I know of) to go, it's possible that some clever twists could be thrown in. We'll see what happens.

Still loving this series. Highly recommended!

A lot of the sakura blossom motifs on the cover have Koro-sensei's face on them. Cute! In the author's note, Matsui says that he worked with the staffs of both the anime and live action* versions to make sure the ending was similar for all of them. That's cool.

* I've seen one or two live-action versions of manga and they're cheesy fun, but I wouldn't call them good.

After an excursion to space, things get back down to earth as the kids worry who is going to give and receive chocolate on Valentine's Day. The strength of this series in is the interaction of the students between themselves and with their teacher, and this volume leans into that, giving us a little breather before the climactic events start coming hard and heavy.

I absolutely loved the budding romance in this volume. I'm so glad that we are finally seeing some romance aspects to it but also more action. I would've read it on release day if I could've got it I loved it so much. Now I can't wait for December to come so I can continue the series.

"Regardless of whether you kill me or not, we will have to part from each other someday. That is what a classroom is all about."

This series lost me for a bit, but as we get to these last few volumes I'm enjoying it a lot again. Things are winding down and character arcs are wrapping up in a very satisfying way. I have more thoughts about the series overall, but I'll wait to see how everything pans out before I ramble too much.

Matsui loves this series and these characters, you can tell. The story takes a slight turn here, with more focus on getting into high schools and romance. There are a few little tidbits of culture here as well, with White Day and Shinto shrines. The end with Irina and Mr. Karasuma was pretty cute and I wonder what will happen from here???
Time marches relentlessly on...

I really enjoyed this part full of teenage romance on Valentines Day and them all looking towards their futures through their entrances exams.

The chapters between Okano and Maehara were so funny to me but also too right, Maehara hurt her.

I’m interested to see the assassination attempt from the world leaders.

Oh also Irina and Karasuma at the end! Yes!

Content warnings: violence, gun violence

This was another fun volume in this truly delightful series, and while it wasn't my favourite addition to the story, it was a nice, light-hearted step back from a lot of the main elements of the story and I had a lot of fun with it.

The end is near! I feel like I've avoided this manga because I don't want it to end. In this volume we see sensitive and the class celebrating what could be their last Valentine's day. This volume also is leading to the finale of several characters arcs.

Nagisa and Karma utilize their stealth skills to steal aboard the rocket headed to the space station, taking the place of the crash dummies, much to the surprise of the astronauts. Nagisa threatens them with a bomb (a fake one) and Karma explains their mission in order to gain their cooperation in gathering the data on Koro Sensei. When asked how they plan to return, they confidently say that they have that covered.

The two hitchhikers parachute back to their classroom, where they find a very angry Karasuma. But Koro Sensei convinces him that the information which the students gleaned from their trip, even outside of the data about himself, far outweighs any of Karasuma’s arguments. Going over the data, they realize that if handled correctly, the chances of Koro Sensei actually exploding and destroying the earth are minimal, and everyone rejoices. Can it really be that simple? But, also, is that a risk they can afford to take?

Koro Sensei wishes to schedule another career guidance session with each of them. Once they graduate, their assassination skills will no longer be of use to them, and they have their futures to consider. That is only 38 days away now. Not a lot of time. Plus they need to apply to the high school of their choice. For Karma, that’s an easy decision – he wants to attend Kunugigaoka High School and make the students’ lives miserable by outshining them lol Nagisa is conflicted about his career choice if he doesn’t become an assassin. He is surprised when Sakura asks him what else would he become but a teacher? That idea had actually never occurred to him.

The second Grim Reaper is still on the loose – and still determined to wreak vengeance on Koro Sensei! It’s unfortunate that he has teamed up with mad scientist Yanagisawa to take down Koro Sensei once and for all!

Valentine’s Day is coming! In Japan, that’s a time for women to buy chocolates for the men in their lives. And also for a certain teacher to indulge his matchmaking propensities! How many couples will he successfully match this year?

Time is ticking away, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance! As the students prepare for life after junior high, surely they must be wondering if there will be any life. They have discovered that the chances of Koro Sensei exploding are minimal, but they aren’t zero, so some sort of chance remains. And it looks like the wannabe Grim Reaper is more than happy to add to their confusion, along with the horrible man who made Koro Sensei what he is today. That can’t be good. Another great volume, only three more to go!

Overall Rating: 8/10 - I enjoyed this series. Original, full of detailed characters. The story is original and very well written. You end up hating and loving Koro-Sensei and understand the emotion each student goes through until the end. Ending is perfect, wouldn't change a thing. I recommend this series. ** Love those covers by the way, simple and perfect fit.

Do I recommend it:

Volume eighteen of Assassination Classroom was divided into three parts. The first part shows the results of Nagisa and Karma’s trip to the International Space Station. They persuaded the astronauts there to hand over the research data on Koro-sensei. The data suggests that the larger the organism, the less of a chance there will be for an explosion to take place. With the right serum, Koro-sensei’s chances of exploding would be reduced to less than one percent. This gives the students an option that doesn’t involve killing their beloved teacher. Despite this option, the students came to a different decision. They decided that they will still try and assassinate Koro-sensei, but if they fail to do so by graduation, they will cease assassination attempts and move on with their lives.

The second part of the book is a bit of filler material. Koro-sensei missed out on Christmas and New Year’s activities so he decides to celebrate them all at once in the month of February. This rolls into another side arc about Valentine’s Day chocolate that focuses on Maehara using Okano as bait in an assassination attempt on Koro-sensei. This, of course, breaks Okano’s heart and causes her to become very violent towards Maehara. Koro-sensei even states that he will list Maehara as a playboy on his report card if he can’t get Okano to give him chocolates. It was a fun way to build the relationship between the two of them and a pretty nice side story.

In between and after the holiday arcs, two new threats are emerging for Koro-sensei. We are revisited by Yanigasawa, the scientist that was responsible for turning Grim Reaper into Koro-sensei. Somehow, Yanigasawa got a hold of Grim Reaper II’s body after he was dealt with by Koro-sensei many volumes ago. It appears the two of them have teamed up and are looking to eliminate Koro-sensei once and for all. On the flipside, Karasuma caught wind of a major assassination plan being put into motion by the world’s superpowers. A glimpse of a massive device is shown noting that it’s only part of the joint efforts to kill Koro-sensei.

Our volume ends with a conversation between Karasuma and Irina where he alerts her about this plan and then conveniently asks her to give up her assassination career and to come work at the Ministry of Defense with him! This was an okay volume of Assassination Classroom, story-wise. The new threats to Koro-sensei made things interesting, but the filler arcs caused the story to drag on a bit. At this point, it just seems that Yusei Matsui is dragging the series out and with three volumes left, I’m hoping the story shies away from filler and starts heading into a better direction. When the main story is in full force, this series runs on all cylinders, but these side arcs are really hurting the pacing.

Assassination Classroom doesn’t really do a good job with character development. With a massive cast, it’s a difficult task to stay on top of every character, but it was good to see Maehara and Okano get a bit of advancement in their relationship. Takebayashi got the spotlight placed on him for the second time in this series, though. Sadly, it’s because he failed his entrance exam to his first school of choice so the rest of the class humorously tried to cheer him up, which did more harm than good.

Nagisa and Kayano’s relationship took a small step forward when Kayano was too embarrassed to give him chocolates, but after a lot of consideration, she mustered up the courage and gave them to him, even if it took a bit of her acting abilities to do so. It was a rather cute moment in the series and a nice wrap up to the Valentine’s Day arc. Since this was so prominent, most of the character development was focused on relationship building, but in a lot of cases, it’s futile since the class will be split up upon graduation and they all go to their respective high schools. It makes for a lot of bittersweet moments.

With only three volumes of Assassination Classroom left, volume eighteen looked to set the final stage for the series. It looks like there’s going to be a major battle ahead for Koro-sensei and with Yanigasawa/Grim Reaper II, the superpowers of the world and the students of Class E all gunning for him, he’s going to have a huge challenge in front of him if he is to survive. While the side arcs are entertaining, they really need to stop. Material like this is fine for the beginning or even midpoints in the series, but when you’re this close to the end, all efforts should be focused on wrapping the series up.

To go from Koro-sensei’s backstory into just bits and pieces of what’s to come next creates a broken flow that can take the reader right out of the story. Filler arcs are great for breaks after a major arc, but here it seems like they’re just being used to extend the lifetime of the series. Between volumes seventeen and eighteen, the final major arc has been built up and then interrupted with filler arcs and I just can’t express how annoying I find that. Despite all of that, the final arc does seem to be absolutely epic so I can only hope that Matsui-sensei puts the pedal to the floor and brings us a darker, more serious volume next time around!

Způsob, jakým byly vyobrazeny zkoušky, se mi moc nezamlouval a tyto části mě ani moc nebavily. Naštěstí tam byly pouze krátce a jen dvakrát.

Hlavně by mi určitě brejlatá holka sebrala Karmu a to bych jí neodpustila.

This is a pretty good one. Nagisa & Karma go to Space!
They intend to look for data about Koro Sensei in their
new quest to save him from exploding...
Koro Sensei celebrating holidays is so amusing.
Lots of thinking to do for these students. The possibility
that they might save the world and have to do things
after the assassination or saving Koro Sensei didn't really
come to mind before now. They might get futures...

*Spoilers*

I feel the interactions between the astronauts and the students were
a tad unrealistic lol... Even if they know about their teacher it seems
unlikely that they would help out so easily... idk.
The students came back from space, and I guess they didn't get any
tests on their bodies afterwards? Would they need them if they were only there
for a short time? I'm curious...
Now we know he might not explode at all, those are good odds.
Omgsh! Valentines Day shenanigans! Ahahahaha!
I liked that scene with Miss Vich and Karasuma. <3

This is one of those volumes that has so many cute character scenes that it's hard to talk about it without writing a full blown essay. Matsui does such an amazing job of giving so many of the smaller characters moments to shine, while still carrying the arcs of the major characters. It's really a talent to write about an entire classroom and their antagonists while making them all distinct - especially in black and white.

The story from this volume that will forever break my school girl heart though is Kayano and the chocolates for Nagisa. Her love for him is so unselfish and I hope someday he's able to give that love back to her in return. (Author's Note - I may have written a fanfiction to this end.)
