I'm not going to torture myself any more with this, and I hope none of you choose to do the same. That's right, bitches -- I'M GOING TO REVIEW A BOOK WITH HAVING ONLY READ HALF OF IT.

description

So, let us begin on our journey...

Prolouge

When people say "This is the worst book I have ever read" in their reviews, I used to think they were overreacting...

TEN REASONS WHY I STOPPED READING ANGEL STAR

1. The Plot

Or, more accurately, the lack of one.

Let me tell you two solid things I should see by page 100.

Firstly, the antagonist. The closest thing we have to an antagonist at this point is Brynn, the head cheerleader of the book who bullies Teagan. (I'll get into that and the idiocy behind it later.) Now, even if Brynn was the real antagonist she'd suck as one, but once again I'll get into that later. But Brynn isn't the antagonist. I know for a fact that some joker named Hadrian (lol, seriously? Hayden is cool, Adrian is cool, but Hadrian? Really?) is supposed to be the antagonist.

So...where the fuck is he?

description

Secondly, I SHOULD SEE SOME HINT OF A PLOT THAT I CARE ABOUT. Let me tell you the plot of what I read of the book so you can see for yourself...

1. Teagan wakes up and goes to school for ten pages.

2. Teagan is bullied by Brynn.

3. Teagan meets a hot guy.

4. Teagan falls in love with the hot guy.

5. Teagan goes on a date with the hot guy.

6. Teagan haz psychic dreamz!

This, yes all of this, for 100 pages. This is me:

description

I mean, really? WE WASTE 100 PAGES ON THIS? THAT'S ALMOST HALF OF THE BOOK. By now we should have had the inciting incident, the villain should have been introduced, the subplot should have been introduced, and you should be building to the midpoint of your story -- aka the false happiness. But what does Angel Star do?

description

I spent a good three to four days of my life reading this. THOSE ARE DAYS I CAN NEVER GET BACK.

2. Claire

Well, there isn't really much you can say about Claire...

description

Um, so maybe there is one thing you can say about her...

description

Perhaps there's something that makes her stand out from any other YA herione's best friend...

description

OH MY GOD I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE!

YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH? HUH? DO YOU?

THE TRUTH IS THAT CLAIRE IS THE MOST SEXIST BITCH I'VE EVER, EVER SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE!

Teagan tries to tell us that Claire is a headstrong person and a wonderful best friend, but it is ALL LIES . Want me to show you? Want me to give you a peek into the book at the sheer fuckery that is Claire? Okay...hold on to your hats!

"

Claire smiled as she flicked my arm with her finger. She stared me up and down for a few seconds then said in a serious voice, “You need a boyfriend.”

I stuck out my jaw and sighed. Like that was going to happen anytime soon.

“You know, someone to save you from the evil witch who walks these halls.” Claire’s gaze drifted out into the traffic of students.

"

Let it sink it. Let is melt in. Reallyyy think about that for a while. You done? Okay.

Here are some of my thoughts on it:

description

description

Okay, WHAT? WHAT? Okay Claire, are we cavemen now? Are we in the fucking dark ages? Is "U NED MENZ 2 PRTECT U" really something you can even think without recoiling in disgust from your own words?

Let me tell everyone just now the difference between a badass best friend and a punk ass bitch:

The badass will slap any idiot into next Tuesday who thinks it's a good idea to pick on her best friend.

The punk ass bitch will mildly snip to the idiot who thinks it's a good idea to pick on her best friend, and then she will tell her best friend to get a man to protect her.

We clear on that? Good :)

3. The Prose

description

Let me give you an example...

The tall boy stood in front of me, his features soft, yet chiseled, and I couldn’t help but notice the way the sunlight played with his sandy hair. The way it curled loosely around his face, capturing the specks of light that fell onto us from between the branches. But…his eyes. They were the warmest, most endless aqua —and inhumanly hypnotic. Suddenly, I couldn’t recall any sort of discomfort in my head, just a soothing warmth flowing within me, and the panic of the morning -- the taunting, the winged mirage in the hall—simply melted away at the sight of him.

description

Okay, what the hell. Is. That. I'm getting Twilight flashbacks. Here's a game! Re-read that whole passage three times without stopping for air! Then again...please don't! We don't want poor little ol' Sev to get sued by your family and friends once you go into a Angel Star induced coma, now would we?

Since the passage pretty much speaks for itself, I'll just say this : even ignoring the things such as...THE TENSE CONFUSION THROUGHOUT THE BOOK, Angel Star has some of the most horrific prose I've ever seen. I can't believe I was talking bad about Shiver's prose...ack...

description

I-I'm sorry...just give me a minute before we continue....

....

....

Okay...I think I can move on now...

4. Brynn

description

She is a fail in every sense of the word.

Her entire purpose is to be a bully so we feel sorry for Teagan! Well, it didn't work. I just didn't care.

Brynn has no motivation for her actions, no personality besides "bitchy" and no depth. Seriously, I don't even know what the author was trying to do with her.

Ick. Even typing her name makes my skin go all slimy.

5-6. Gareth and Gareth&Teagan's Epic True Love

description

Oh my god, I don't think there has ever been a more boring person and couple in the history of the universe.

Gareth is nothing but a hot boy! He has no personality what so ever. My god, I was crying at the screen to make it stop. It's sort of obvious why Teagan is in "love" with him, but why is he in love with her? THERE IS NO REASON WHATSOEVER. He's just there to be her perfect boyfriend! She even admits she has no idea why he's interested in her!

Don't even get me started on their relationship. Well, okay, you want to know what it's like? Do you want to know? Look here:

Teagan(thinking): Oh my God. Hot boy. He is so hot.

Gareth: *talking about something*

Teagan: Huh? Oh. Hi.

Gareth: lol, *says something "dazzling"*

Teagan: *swoons*

Gareth: Can I randomly ask you out on a date even when we've only known each other for a hour and a half?

Teagan: I'm so desperate and you're so hot...

Gareth: What?

Teagan: I mean yes! *giggle*

Gareth: Bye!

Teagan: *swoons*

*later*

Teagan: The hot boy! I mean, Gareth! Hi!

Gareth: Let's go on that date!

Teagan: *swoons*

*at coffee shop*

Teagan: *swoons*

Gareth: *talking abo

Me: description

ACK, IT'S JUST SO BORING! I'm falling a sleep simply transcripting their conversations!

7-10. EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS ATROCIOUS BOOK!

In Conclusion

Dear Angel Star,

High School somewhere. I’ve-Got-One-Friend-Besides-My-Mom–Some-People-Say-I’m-Pretty-But-My-Mirror-Says-I’m-Not-Freak-Girl is hit on / stalked by Mysterious-New-Guy-Who-Makes-Everybody-Swoon-But-Has-Only-Eyes-For-Her.

On the second day of his school career he says “I make up to you for missed lunch [He had to see the counselor / coordinator] this afternoon,” and sweeps her off to a near-by playground after stopping at a Starbucks on the way to parade her proudly in front of her enemies ("Lookee HERE!! I elevate your former freak to school goddess by the power of my good looks!"). She thinks for a quarter second of her mom, who is a bit peculiar about getting into cars with strangers. “But that doesn’t count if the stranger makes you feel so saaaafe like being in a bubbbble, smells like your favorite brand of incense ... and has a rosary, which is a family heirloom, swinging on on his rearview mirror”, she explains to herself and smiles contentedly. The rosary means he surely is of “good stock” (=quote).
After the gulping down of their lattes and the fingering the rosary, the date, which doesn’t count as a date, proceeds on the playground’s set of swings, where he speedily gets down to business:

He (let’s call him Gary, which means lightning) twinkles at her with his Chlorox-blue eyes, which complement her mouldy-toilet-water-green ones: “As we are swinging now (coincidentally).... do you ever think you could FLY???”
She (let’s call her Coffeegan, which is Irish) giggles with modest embarrassment: “Umh. Yeah. I thought so, when I was young.”
Gary, who kicks the ground deftly with his Timberlakes to lift him higher, while never letting go of her hand, which he even held when he was paying and drinking her latte, grins: “Coffeeee, come on, come on, come ooon, admit you still think so today.”
Coffeegan smiles (she feels safe anyway, so there is no danger in admitting things): “Well, um, yes. You got me there. I still believe I can fly. I am totally into wings. I doodle them on my margins, too...”
Gorgeous Gary whispers (totally forgiving her that she missed the point), his latte-breath tinkling her her while they swing in synchrony towards the setting sun: “Baby, come on, come on, come oooooon. You think it ALL THE TIME. So now. First hint covered. Next. (You have to be home soon.) Since we know each other more than a day now and I have already saved you from a mysterious black cloud on the school’s parking lot, which is pretty paranormal, I ask you: DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD? DO YOU BELIEVE IN ANGELS?”
Coffeegan rips her thoughts away from the nightmarish idea that he would have to let go of her hand when he dropped her at her house later, which would surely feel like losing your bladder or your heart, and breathes “I DO.”
Gary is proud of himself to have come so far. “Sooo. You sometimes think I am too good to be real, am I right? Can you guess what I am? It’s difficult, I know (Cinderella complex, anyone?). If you didn’t get, I’ll quizz you again tomorrow before midnight. I might even give you a few more hints,” he says with his lips mopping through the air around her neck, while swinging wildly to and fro.
“Alright,” she says, a bit unsure, but feeling quite safe, soooo safe (personal space is really overrated these days), “But you will visit me tonight in my dream, won’t you? You can do that, can’t you?” She is a little afraid the answer might be negative. That sexy black-winged thing of her recent dreams gets a bit too boring from time to time. Chlorox-boy seems to be quite the opposite and should provide a good past-time. “Okeydokey,” he promises. I can do EVERYTHING, when I am not real, which I might be. So, I bring you home now. Lesson One: Check! Haha. Don’t forget to call your friend Klaire (see how observant I are? I remembered her name) to tell her how magnificient I am. I don’t need friends beside you, don't you worry. But I sure want to earn a reputation – in case my stunt at the Starbucks went by unnoticed.” Coffeegan feels like being in HEAVEN. "Klaire was right: I REALLY needed a boyfriend", she muses happily.

(Here we are at around page 50 or 55. The book continues to tell the wonderful story, but alas, I have other books to read, unfortunatey.)

If i were to describe this book in a short sentence, I would say, "I loved every single page i read". And let me just say this, that there are certain points in your life that is defined by certain incidents which can make all the difference in our life.

Let me briefly start with the long journey i took with this book. If you do read this, you won't regret it. The day i got this book was actually rather bad cos i was going though some really bad situations that week. But the fact that it arrived was the only joyous moment that day for me. I started reading the book instantly. It started off really well and i must not lie that, during the first 2 pages it did remind me a bit of Hush, Hush. That was where the similarities ended. I was sucked in literally from that point onwards. The words were simple and straightforward. But the complexity of the plot was evident even from the beginning. So i started reading... and thats when I met Teagan.

Teagan... hmmm... She is complex to say the least but at the same time she is simple in the sense of how a 17 year old girl is. She has a sense of clarity in whatever she sees which nowadays most people lack which happens to be the clarity to see everything for what it is. I found something in her that did take me a while to see even if it was right in front of me. It was the fact that she is forgiving. Its her weakness to an extent but her strength as well. Even though she is imperfect, Its that imperfections that makes her perfect. Her transition from the girl she was to the woman she is becoming is one that you should read the book to fully understand. I should say that the author did an excellent job with her character development which is rare in most of the books that come out these days.

Now, Claire is the next one i met. She happens to be the comic relief in this book. And to an extent was somewhat of the support for Teagan till the her Angel arrives. I did predict a fallout between them cos of the love between Teagan and her boyfriend/angel. But never in a million years did i think that she'd fall for a mistake that ended up taking her life. But still, it was a choice she made and the choice did cost her, her life. But certain things no matter how deep you think into it always ends up the same way in life. Every single person i met till now has denied the existence of fate or the existence of a bigger plan underneath all that we do, even. In the end, her loss, even if its cruel for me to say this... was just a necessity as well as predestined for the bigger plan.

Now onto Garreth, the angel of light, the man with the deepest character I've ever seen. Even though i didn't get to see much of his true nature in this book or his past, the base of his character does revolve around his love for Teagan and the lengths to which he will go for her. Still I was ultimately in the end sure that this was one character that can be explored beyond the limits of what has already been written in the book. To tell you the truth, you may think that you have him all figured out by the end of the story, but trust me, you ain't seen noting yet! Maybe i am taking a blind swing at absolutely thin air, but lets wait and see what does transpire. So... where was i?... Oh! yes, Garreth's character. Well... Garreth to me is the somewhat of a part of God himself with an unending reservoir of love. Even though he is just a character in a book, we as humans can learn one thing from him. Which is the courage to take risks and to step up for the ones you love and care about. When i saw the love he had for Teagan and the way he protected her, I thought... is it so hard for us to do the same? Live for someone, and when needed even put your life on the line for the one you love or literally sacrifice every single thing that you hold dear for the ones we love. Its a question i will leave for you to answer?

Hadrian... His name does always brings a smile to my face for the simple fact that i do share a bit of his character in myself, which i am sure enough to say that i knew even before the book did get into my hands. Hadrian, well... The dark angel. To say about him briefly, even though he may seem like an angel, his mask once removed reveals everything that defines a human. Conceited, Overconfident and Evil... but still holding deep inside the creature of light he once used to be. I saw him as being conflicted between his wants and his purpose. Ultimately, he epitomizes everything that a human is and has the same flaws as well. This may not have been what he was, but its what he is now. Let me just leave the rest of the finding for you to decide cos its better that way. Hadrian is a character for each and everyone to understand and discover for themselves.

I did find Teagan's Mom to be sometimes just like most mothers but sometimes the little things she did for her daughter like leaving her alone when she needed and understanding her for what she is going through was just lovely. I think more mothers should follow her example. Indeed in todays society, after we reach a certain age, we fail to remember how we ourselves were when we were young. It's a flaw of sort that emanates within us as we get older. But still, its better to try, isn't it?

Now the rest of the cast. Ryan for me was the typical cute boy in college character but had made appearances at critical points in the storyline. Brynn and her friends were the typical plastic, snobbish and Make-Up factory made girls now widely seen in Colleges. Maybe not all of them, but trust me I've seen my fair share of them in all the Colleges i went to.

Let me just say a word or two about the book in its entirety and why i am so into it.

The book does have something that most books lack these days. The book has life. Simplicity of words, believability of the situations and the reality of an invisible war in a realm beyond our own (Biblical in its origin), did breathe life into the story. This is entirely my opinion on the book and i may or may not or wouldn't fancy anyone agreeing with me either.

As i said before, i was going through a rough time while i got hold of this book. But it made it all worthwhile. Cos i found comfort in Teagan and Garreth and their life. One thing that surprised me was the similarity in the way I and Garreth talked. Trust me when i say this, that most of the conversations i had with my love are exactly the same to the last word (minus the angel/saving the world thing). It did give me back memories which made me smile when i did think all was lost for me. And in the end, this book, did fill me with hope. Hope for life and the hope that even when every single thing to the last smallest detail does seem like the end, there is still a way and there is still hope. Just holding on to the things that you hold dear makes all the difference and even though i did know that i should hold on... this book made me stronger and to live not for myself but for others too.

And finally, let me just say that opinions vary from person to person. And all that i shared may not be what you see in the book. But i do hope that you can see the life it holds and the message it gives out.

"I somehow feel that this book is gonna be just amazing. Even though there might be a few 'Angel' themed books out there right now, i somehow feel something different and unique about this book. A recent, short but friendly chat with the author has also made it clear to me that this book is going to be unique in its genre. I am really looking forward to reading this book."

I finally found the angel book I’ve been searching for... Angel Star by Jennifer Murgia is a amazingly well written tale about a girl named Teagan, who’s guardian angel temporally hangs up his wings and becomes human to warn her, of the evil lingering in the darkest corners of her life. From page one this story just pulls you in and never let’s go.

The main character, Teagan, starts out as a shy girl. Her best friend, Claire, is a character at the beginning of the book that helps shield her from life’s disagreeable obstacles. But when the situation changes and everything in Teagan’s world turns upside down, she doesn’t fall a part. Unlike most YA characters she doesn’t whine about her circumstances or hide from her problems. Instead she chooses to rise above it all and with the help from her angel, Garreth, she confronts her fears head on.

And as for Garreth…all I can say is move over Patch there’s a new angel in town. Garreth is a selfless character who’s soul responsibility is to take care of Teagan. He’s got good looks, he’s charming, and did I mention the hotness factor? I have a feeling Garreth will leave countless readers swooning and wishing for angels of their own.

This book will take you on a rapturous journey that will leave you praying for more. Jennifer Murgia went above and beyond all my high expectations.

This novel is a definite read!

There is no way I could possibly give this book anything less than 5 stars. Jennifer Murgia is a rare talent, able to weave a beautifully sweet love story so eloquently the words flowed together effortlessly on the pages. Her descriptions are so exquisite that I could close my eyes and see it clearly. She takes us into a world where angels fall in love with their charges and ordinary girls have the power to save the world.

The relationship between Teagan and Garreth is touching and sweet as they tentatively explore the exciting but frightening first stirrings of true love.

Enter Hadrian: The dark angel. Persuasive and seductive, he is determined to keep Teagan from fulfilling her destiny and he uses whatever means necessary , including seducing her over to the dark side. What makes matters worse; though she loves Garreth, Teagan can’t help but be drawn to Hadrian.

The story was fast paced and I found myself eagerly turning the pages to see what would happen next.
All I can say is that I can't wait for the much anticipated sequel, Lemniscate.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story of first love, seriously hot angels and angelology.

Astonishing, Amazing, Awe-inspiring!

ANGEL STAR is one of those books that I've been dying to get my greedy little hands on. With high expectations, Jennifer did not disappoint! It was everything I look for in a good escape and so much more!

Forbidden Romance. A Destined Fate. An Unforgettable Journey that will inspire the Ultimate Truth.

Teagan McNeel is a shy, quiet seventeen year old girl who has a pure heart. It's only been her and her mother since she's never meet her dad. Not the most popular girl, being tormented daily from Little Miss pom-pom is irritating to say the least. But she has her best friend, Claire to help with the insanity of her life, but even she can't stop the feeling that something is building up, something that feels off, missing, and her nightmares aren't helping matters.
One day a new boy comes to Caver High and as soon as they meet an instant connections flares between them. Like somewhere in a dream, Teagan knows Garreth Adams, feel safe around him, like he's there to be with her and only her. But why...?
Soon she discovers that Garreth comes with an eight-point star marked into his palm; The mark of an Angel...

Jennifer Murgia, weaves a mesmerizing and irresistible story with a concept that is not only refreshing but utterly brilliant. She masterfully adds personal touches that we can relate too and sets vividness in the world she created.
This plot is thick and rich, filled with intrigue, mystery, suspense romance and grace. I loved how natural it felt to read about this particular take on Guardian Angels. How we as humans are protected, that heaven is alive in us, with us, and all around us. It's beautiful. The purpose of what this book is truly about is gripping, ingenious and mind boggling and as we get closer to the reasoning you can't help be at the edge of your seats seeking answers with sweet anticipation.

These characters are completely remarkable! Teagan (great name) is one of those great characters who grows with in the story, making someone who is shy and unsure be strong and brave once this is said and done. I love being proud of the characters I read, and Teagan is one of those characters.
Garrath is wonderful. He's kind and has an amazingly fierce passion of protectiveness that you can't help but cherish in a main character. But he's also so new, unsure and it makes my heart go out to him that much more. There romance may seemed rushed, and I'm one of those readers who don't like instant romance in books, but in this case it was different, necessary and worked like a charm. It was breathtaking. I'm a sucker for a good romance, waiting to be swooned with the words and wonders. Teagan and Garrath have a graceful chemistry, something that is precious and a boundless, an all consuming love that will make you ache in all the right places.
Hadrian (great name) is a wicked mess of deliciousness. I've always had a big thing for bad boys in books, and Hadrian is just a well-welcoming twisted treat. His role in this triangle brings on a whole new meaning to temptation. It's sinfully mischievous.
But at last, my heart belongs to Garrath...well at this point anyways;)

Angel Star is a wonderful must read gem for all fans who love complicated romance, a new and exciting approach to Angels and an experience that is like no other!
A glorious start to a series that I already absolutely adore!
It will leave you...wanting!

Congrats Jennifer on a FANTASTIC debut! Loved every moment, it was truly awesome hun!

I really really wanted to like this book. I kept seeing all these great reviews and I was excited to visit a new pn creature, a guardian angel. I don't know if I need to start finding a new genre or what but this book fell flat.
The story is about a girl (yes I have already forgotten her name) and her finding out she has a guardian angel that has come down from above to help her and profess his undying eternal love. Okay that sounds very hokey so I can't believe I was actually excited about this one. Anyway there is a bad boy of course and I believe he is the brother of Lucifer. This brother (again sorry, but the name has slipped my mind) wants total control over all guardians with this he would also gain control over humans. And the love triangle begins of course. I actually found myself rooting for the bad boy as at least he had a personality. The guardian angel was so boring and all he wanted to do was keep his heart beating at the same pace as his one and only. If you end up reading it that will make sense, but it is very sickenly sweet and way over the top. Also I felt like the authors descriptions needed a lot of cleaning up. I got lost do many times because the scene would suddenly switch to a dream sequence and then jump right back to reality. I felt very disoriented and by the end I wasn't sure which way way up.
I will definitely not be picking the sequel up. I know this book will appeal to the YA fans, but it didn't work for me.

Angel Star is in one word: perfection! Jennifer Murgia's book had me excited right from the beginning. She drew me in and her world refused to let me go, not that I wanted to leave, lol. I was so far from disappointed, in fact she surpassed what I had even hoped for. And did I mention this is her debut YA novel? I know...amazing!

Who doesn't love the idea of a guardian angel? I know I do and I can only hope that mine is as dreamy as Garreth! We meet our main character, Teagan in Angel Star and I just loved her. She's kind, brave and has such a big heart, and did I mention brave? Guardian angel or not, this girl has got guts!

And as I mentioned before, Garreth *swoon* is wonderful. He's the definition of good, protective and all around perfection. But where there is good, bad is always close behind. Enter Hadrian. All I can say is that he's got the tall, dark and dangerous vibe down to a tee.

The truth is, no review can do this book justice. It's just that good! This is a book I will read again and again, it's already a favorite. Some books (and they are few and far between) just stick with you, and that is Angel Star for me. I can't express how excited I am for the sequel to come out and am only sad that it's not already on the shelves.

This book has it all, light vs. dark, good vs. evil, discovering what really matters and fighting for what's right. It's also about sacrifice and standing up for what you believe in. It's deep and emotional and will have you going through a gamut of emotions.

Murgia has a talent and is a natural story teller, so she's in the right business. Like I said...perfection!

Angel Star is completely perfect and captivating. I fell in love with it from the very beginning. It swept me off my feet leaving me in a contented feeling of pure bliss. The writing was beautiful, pulling me into the story. The romance was wonderful. I loved all the characters. They had so much depth, and I felt their love and sorrow. Teagen was a great character. I loved her purity and innocence, but also that she wasn't perfect, and has a small portion of the dark side. And I loved Garreth. He was so perfect and swoon worthy. He was kind and gentle and so in love with Teagen. The meaning in this book was so deep and caught my attention. Jennifer did a superb job at creating a truly wonderul gem of a story, one that will stay close to my heart.

RATING: 0.5 OGRE FARTS

Seventeen-year-old Teagan McNeel falls for captivating Garreth Adams and soon discovers that her crush has an eight-point star etched into the palm of his right hand - the mark of an angel.
But where there is light, dark follows, and she and Garreth suddenly find themselves vulnerable to a dark angel's malicious plan that could threaten not only her life, but the lives of everyone she knows.
Divinely woven together, Angel Star takes readers on a reflective journey when one angel's sacrifice collides with another angel's vicious ambition in a way that is sure to have readers searching for their own willpower.

Angel Star is nothing but a rectangular object filled with bullpoop. I read a lot of reviews and not many were raving about how super awesome this book is, so I didn't have high expectations for it. But as I read the first five chapters, I already wanted to kill Teagan, crucify Garreth, push the author off a bridge, and light the book on fire (the chapters are short, btw). And when I finished the book, I wished I had the power to grow twenty feet tall so I could easily climb the Empire State Building and let out a Tarzan-King-Kong kind of jungle roar that would've hopefully fully expressed my frustration and annoyance with the YA-book world. And maybe I would've snatched a few authors just to make my point clear.

The problem with Angel Star isn't just one thing; it's EVERYTHING! Not only is the protagonist all "Bella, Bella," but the love interest is a pansy, the plot is fast, confusing, hazy and incoherent most of the time, and I don't see the need for a love triangle. There were some ideas that I really liked: When I came across some sort of originality, I perked up a little. I thought, "Hey, things are looking up! The sun is peaking behind the clouds! World peace is about to settle! No more famines and droughts and poverty and homelessness in the world!" but then Teagan would say or think something stupid (like, "OH, GOSH! GARRETH'S EYES ARE SOOOOO PRETTY AND SOOOOO BLUE AND SOOOOO LIGHT THEY ARE ALMOST THE COLOR OF WATER!" << I know! I was like, "WT-HUH? Since when does water have a color? ") or Garreth would say something stupid (like, "Oh beautiful Teagan, I stalked you ever since you were born, but it's not stalking really 'cause I'm your [awesome, hot, swoon-worthy] guardian angel! And I'm in LUUUUUUUUUUUURVE with yew!" or something ridiculously stupid and cheesy like that) or the author wrote something stupid (like, EVERYTHING! ) that I just gave up hoping the story would turn out even remotely good or time-worthy. The sad thing is, I woke up one morning with my heart pounding with anticipation to continue with the story (apparently, I'd forgotten all the stupid, stupid STUPIDITY--a euphemism for a VERY, VERY STUPID, TWILIGHT-CLICHED plot), but when my eyes settled on the words, my heart sank with the painful realization that it was NOT a good book and my head started aching. I wanted this book to be over faster than the words, "I love Garreth [the pansy]."

I've been rambling on and on about how crappy this book is, so why don't I point them out?

1. The Author's Writing: I'll just describe the horror called Jennifer Murgia's Writing in simple words: horrific, ridiculous, offensive, anti-feminist, appalling, enraging, immature, Kindergarten-ish, grammar-less, blasphemous, contradictory, nondescript, redundant, superfluous... I can go on forever.

2. The Characters: There is honestly nothing remarkable about Teagan. She is just that sad, pathetic puppet the author uses to express how awesome [the author] is. Teagan is NOT the example of the perfect heroine--not even close! She is the perfect example of why people like her should be locked up in a BAD HEROINE's jailhouse. She is so stupid and so full of herself and so selfish and stupid that it's not even funny! For example: Ugh. *rubs temples to soothe migraine.*

Then you have pansy Garreth who I doubt is really a guy. Really, Ms. Murgia, really? Couldn't you have added a little more traits to Garreth to clear my confusion? Like his love for pink and rainbows and makeup and dresses and whatever else (same goes to all those authors out there who have wimpy "guys" as main characters)? Men in love aren't all about acting as ridiculous as a girl would. This is the problem with female authors: they don't know how a guy actually thinks. They just add traits that they'd want their fantasy guy to be, and thus, the story is ruined, and the reader wants to hunt them down with pitchforks and torches and order them to get the hell out of town (or the universe, maybe, in my case).

But honestly, who wants a pansy for a boyfriend?

Then there's Hadrian. Hadrian, Hadrian, Hadrian. What is there to say about him? Yeah, random moment...
Anyway, I don't know if Hadrian is or isn't a random character thrown in to this mess of a book to add drama, although it sort of feels like he was thrown in 'cause it seemed to me that Teagan and Garreth were having a wild time all by themselves (note the sarcasm. They hardly do ANYTHING interesting). And I still don't get the love triangle. What is so nice and sexy that emanates from him that make Teagan forget her name and [pansy] Garreth's?

NOTHING! 'Cause the character development is NADA!

3. The romance: I know I'm reading a good romance when I feel the sparks zap at me, and all the love diffuse into me, and when the two of interest kiss, all the chemistry hastily accumulates and is thrown head-on at me, causing me to burn and melt. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that at ALL with Teagan and Garreth, and Teagan and Hadrian. For Garreth and Hadrian, their love for Teagan is practical, since they've known her since ever, but Teagan's love for both of them is just like, wtf? Since when does someone go head over heels over someone the moment they make mere eye contact? It's irrational. And anyway, there's nothing remarkable about Teagan. She's just a very boring person who was probably dropped a little too many times on her head 'cause a lot of her actions were just nonsensical.

4. The Plot: The story seemed to last 50 pages, not the 200 and so. The pace was so fast and confusing and instead of imagining the proceedings going on, I imagined a whirlwind, and when I finally realized what was going on, I had a migraine.

Furthermore, there's no plot. I'm serious. The plot is another of those Twilight cliches where there's a very loose plot just so that the reader wouldn't feel like they're reading a sappy, love story. I mean, I'm sure the author would just LOVE to write about Teagan and Garreth's [nonexistent] romance all day long, but then again, she doesn't want to be cast out of the universe.

But I'mma hunt her down anyway (:

My first thoughts after having just finished it -

Sadly it's not mine to read again - sadly I must send it on it's marry way tomorrow or Wed. to the next lucky reader....

But thankfully it's preordered, thankfully I will have the ability sometime soon, to enter the world of Angel Star again - to greet Teagan again and to vist with Garreth....it's official release is only a month away, right?

Angel Star is amazing - the story telling was brilliant, it's a book that I will feel honored to own, so that when I am feeling the need I can pick it up again and reenter the amazing world.

How do authors do it, create worlds where you feel like you have completely lost yourself and are LIVING inside the book? I dont know...but today, sitting outside reading Angel Star, I took a minute to look up at the sky and for just a minute I could have sworn that it was the same sky that Teagan looks up to - gosh that seems silly...

It's someone with such passion for what they do that can create something like what I found in Angel Star...

Honestly from the minute I read the Prologue, to the minute the last page was read - was about 10 hours - I pulled myself away to make sure the kids did homework, ate and got to bed - then I was back into the world. It's the kind of book the draws you in not letting you go...the fresh prospective on the whole "angel" story was so original – yet I must confess half way in I was NOT very happy with Jennifer....but then, well I can't say what happened....

But anyway – from the painstakingly, original details, to the down to earth yet kick ass characters – Angel Star is a book that's risen to the top of my pile of beloved books – it's right up there with titles like The Pace, Seers of Light and Fallen....

Move over Vampires, demons and Werewolves – there's a new sheriff in town and Garreth is one kick ass Angel that I cant wait to read more about!

Ster van Acht
Jennifer Murgia
Dutch Venture Publishing
🌟🌟🌟☆☆

My obsessions with vampires are over. Replaced by angels. I have read three YA books that were angel related. Only one of them actually piqued my curiosity but that one was vampire-angel crossbreed. It was not solid but it was better than the other two. My problem with the other two ranges from lack of info about its angels, excruciating and long snore inducing story line and a disappointing turn of events. I was crossing my fingers on this new one, I had high hopes for it. After months of waiting I finally got it, an advance copy, I put all the other books aside and started reading it. The prologue captures you right away... Welcome to Angel Star.

Teagan has been seeing things. Shadows, darkness so consuming that every time she see it the world disappears. There she was minding her own business, coping with the Bitch squad, being mousy, hanging out with her best friend, when Garreth and Hadrian came into her life. A myth older than all myths has been revealed to her. Angels are real. She can see them, she can feel them and two of them are interested in her. One because of love and one because he wants power. One is her Guardian Angel and the other one... let me just say that his identity will stun you. I remember my reaction when I read that part. Bewilderment and awe. After the secrets was relayed to her, Teagan found herself leading a battle that turned her world upside down. She was forced into this mission, one that she only got fresh knowledge of and some she still couldn't understand. No pressure. The fate of mankind only rest in her hands. Nothing to worry about. The ordinary girl she knew days ago was gone. A new Teagan has been born.

I like Teagan both when she was mousy and being pushed around by Brynn and I liked her more when she started gaining the confidence that she is indeed stronger. Both mentally and spiritually. She has a lot of faith in herself that was both impressive and comforting. She did not waste time whining or questioning why she was placed in that situation. She has a very open mind. That was so refreshing. Another thing I like about her is the love she have for Garreth. The faith and the belief that connects them was so cute and tender. I find myself smiling the first time she told him she love him. Garreth and Hadrian created a perfect supporting character for her. Both were described as handsome and strong. One is dark, dangerous and provocative while the other one was simply lovable and perfect.

Guardian Angels? What do I really know about them? Nothing much. I grew up taking catecism classes as part of the catholic school curriculum but I don't remember learning anything about angels or maybe I missed the lecture either way I think it is a shame that all I know about them is the basic, they are there to watch over us. What does that even mean? I could enumerate tons of hypothetical answers but I never thought about Jennifer Murgia's concept before. Her angels can make of break their human charge. I wouldn't want to spoil it so that is all I can say at the moment.

I know I don't have to say it since it pretty much written on my review. But I want to say it. I LOVE THE BOOK!!! There are sufficient background about the characters, angels and the octagram that made the story plausible. The emotions are heavy, romance and action wise. Suspense and mystery is a part of it too. There was one scene wherein I felt really sad (even this is not a bad thing) and I kind of question why?! Not because I think it was unnecessary or cruel but I kind of felt Teagan's pain. It was a brilliant move, it served its purpose well. As far as the covers. The haters can say all they want to say. I couldn't think of a better cover for this book. It is perfect. It is simple, meaningful and it targeted the content of the book. Remember, do not judge the book by its cover.

Jennifer Murgia did a really good job on writing the first book of this series. It has in depth exploration of symbolism, delicious prose, well thought, sweet & beautiful love story and a great aspect about light and dark. If you are still searching for a great YA angel related book, this is a book to start and end your search.

i had a hard time finishing this book. the writing was very choppy and the story dragged on a bit at the beginning. i seriously contemplated abandoning this book altogether if not for my almost obsessive-compulsive need to finish stuff that i've started. i also didn't like how the author just seemed to breeze through a character's death mid-way through the book as if it wasn't that important. the one bright spot in the story is hadrian and his conflicted ways. i liked the end part of the book because of him.

2 stars: one star solely because of hadrian and a measly star for everything else that i had to slug through just to finish this book. heh, maybe i really am just a sucker for bad boys.

I've got a bit of a love/hate thing going on with Angel Star. There were parts of the story I really enjoyed, and other parts that made me want to stop reading in frustration. I did read it in one sitting, though, so I think that counts for something.

I'll start with the good first - the angels. I love me some paranormal YA, and I don't think that'll be a big surprise to anyone. I'm a big fan of Hush, Hush and Fallen, and thanks to them, I have an interest in angels, whether they be of the fallen, earth-bound or evil kind. There's something about these celestial beings that fascinates me, and I'm probably going to have to blame that on their wings. They sound beautiful and haunting, and something I would give an arm and a leg to see in real life.

Murgia's angels are of the beautiful variety, and are assigned to humans as Guardians. Of course, there's the odd evil one out there, and that particular personality trait falls to Hadrian, twin brother of Lucifer. The mythology of Angel Star is very interesting, and is different to the other YA angel books I mentioned above. Light and dark features a lot, with Garreth and Hadrian representing each side of the spectrum. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the angel plot, and it is something I'd like to read more about. For me, the problems lie with the rushed introduction and noticeable similarities to other books (if you read it, you'll see what I mean).

If Angel Star would have been written as a 400-page series opener, I think everything would have been fine. The first 30 pages could have been dragged out, and the events unfolding would have been more believable. I really struggled with Teagen's character, because of how fast she accepts her fate, Garreth's revelation and the truth about her destiny. Huge life-changing moments like these should come with time, ensuring at least some semblance of realism. As it is, everything progresses far too fast, and before you know it there are declarations of love all over the place, after only three or four days of Teagen and Garreth knowing each other. I'm pretty good at accepting that in paranormal YA, but this time it didn't work for me.

I realise that a lot of my problems with Angel Star are just personal preferences with how YA romance is handled, and I hope my review has succeeded in nicely explaining why I'm on the fence about this one. It's by no means the worst book I've ever read, but neither is it up there with the best.

*2.5*

Going into Angel Star I wanted to love it. I mean, it's about one of my favorite topics in YA (angels) and it seemed like it had a unique premise. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy Angel Star nearly as much as I hoped I would because not only could I not really connect with any of the characters, but everything always felt a little too clichéd and predictable for my liking.

As Angel Star begins timid and shy Teagan has just received yet another spiteful e-mail from the Miss Popularity in her grade. But soon everything begins to turn around when Teagan meets Garreth, a delightful, alluring, and mysterious guy who picks her to crush on out of everyone in their school. Teagan is thrilled because she finally feels like everything is going her way. But Garreth, her beautiful charming Garreth, is hiding secrets from her, one that might even change her entire life.

The characters in this, especially the secondary ones, were not nearly as developed as they could have been, leaving for me to not be able to relate to them in many ways. And even the one who was developed the most-Teagan-left a lot to be desired. I felt that for most of the book she was in many ways a coward, especially in the part dealing with her best friend, though I will admit that she stepped it up a lot in the last few chapters but, overall, it didn't really change my whole perspective of her. Garreth, on the other hand, was someone I felt I didn't learn nearly enough about. Instead I just got one rushed relationship between him and Teagan.

Further more, while I did feel like the plot had a lot of potential, and was interesting enough, Murgia made it be predictable with obvious twists and turns, which never really left for me to be on the edge of my seat, enamored in the world she had created. Though, her writing was decent enough and moved smoothly.

In all, Angela Star just wasn't the book for me, sadly enough. I will admit I can see why others enjoyed it so much, but I just didn't see the same spark in it they obviously did. And I have to say I'm not really sure I'll be picking up the sequel to this, but who knows maybe if I do give it try come it's release, I'll love it a lot. I mean weirder things have occurred, right?

Teagan McNeel falls for Garreth Adams, the new guy at school, who turns out to be an angel. The idea of guardian angels and their relationships to their human charges, often unknown to the humans, in this book was original (though at times the writing style tried to be a little too breathy and flowery for me), as was the idea of one of them seeking to take advantage of those bonds for his own gain.

However, too many crucial parts of this book had me saying, “Really?” When Teagan’s friend and others act completely out of character, instead of thinking maybe it had something to do with the bad guy, she wonders why everyone’s acting so strangely. Also, when one truly bad thing happens (I don’t want to give it away, so sorry for being vague) I thought Teagan’s reaction was completely off. You can blame so much on being numb or focusing on concern for your boyfriend and the big picture, but an event that should have been the emotional equivalent of a punch to the solar plexus never had the impact on Teagan that I felt it should have.

I also thought faceoffs with Hadrian were resolved too quickly and cleanly and, to me, the sudden infatuation with him seemed tacked on as an afterthought and wasn’t believable. Teagan seemed to be swayed too quickly and easily, and for someone as strong as she supposedly is, I didn’t think any of Hadrian’s words or actions should have affected her as they did, especially when she’s already found the love of her life.

We already know there’s going to be a sequel, so I won’t totally write this series off, but I’m skeptical that there will be enough of an improvement in the second one to keep my interest.

I loved it! Jennifer Murgia has written a beautiful, refreshing and captivating story.

This is one of those books as you read on it gets better and better. Even at the beginning it moves quickly and it doesn't take long to get wrapped up in the story. It was such a unique take on Guardian Angels, especially the concept of the eight-point star. I wish I could say more but I don't want to spoil the book.

Tegan, the main character was sweet, shy and very likeable. By the end she was strong and confident. She was very accepting of everything even in the beginning. And Garreth....mmmmm I really liked that he was so true to himself never swaying from his task and and the way he felt about Tegan. And how can you forget Hadrian, again mmmmm.... I definitely look forward to finding more about him in the second book. The only thing I wished for was some more of Tegan and Garreth's relationship in the beginning of the book but that was because I love their moments together as they were so sweet and beautiful.

And of the course the ending left me wanting more. It does leave some uanswered questions but at the same time still puts a smile on your face.

Overall, a great start to the series, a must read.

I still refuse to accept the fact that someone decided to publish this ... uhm book. It was by far one of the worst things I have ever read, if not the worst. It read like really really bad fan fiction. Lexically it was absolutely simplistic and I believe the vocabulary of a 8-year-old could be quite complex compared to this one. And the plot ... oh my... don't get me started. I was reading, scratch that, breezing through the story and couldn't believe how utterly stupid it was. The main characters, I'm sure, had a negative IQ. I could go on and on with my rant about what a piece of crap this book was but there is no need. It will suffice to say that it would make everything I read next a complete literary masterpiece, it won't be easy to find something equally as bad.

Uitgebreide recensie: http://thebookreview.nl/recensies/fan...

Can there be light without dark? How do you keep the necessary balance between both? Jennifer Murgia’s ANGEL STAR took me on a journey of the choices we face and the importance of balance within our lives.

ANGEL STAR begins with Teagan McNeel. Used to being ostracized by others, Teagan is known as a freak at school. Then she meets Gareth Adams. From the moment Gareth – Swoon – stepped onto the scene, I found myself looking forward to their interactions with one another and the connection they shared. There’s nothing like new love blossoming in the air! And let us not forget the dark and provocative Hadrian. Hadrian’s dark nature offered the perfect contrast to the goodness radiating within Gareth, and his character was an important addition to the storyline.

When I first heard about ANGEL STAR, I knew I had to get my hands on a copy. After reading the book, I’m thrilled to say that it exceeded my already high expectations. Murgia’s writing captured my heart. I grew to care about these characters and found myself rooting for them all the way. Teagan’s quiet nature and insecurities drew me to her and that, combined with Murgia’s easy writing style made it easy to empathize with her. Teagan was open to the changes evolving around her. She definitely stepped outside of her comfort zone with Gareth and I enjoyed watching her character grow as the plot unfolded. I also loved that’s she didn’t take forever to accept the reality of the situation nor did she neglect the importance of her own role in events to come.

ANGEL STAR is a breathtakingly fresh debut novel with exciting characters that jump off the pages. It was a perfect blend of romance and mystery surrounding the battle of light and darkness within ourselves. Will the characters defeat the ominous forces threatening their lives? This had me frantically turning pages. And with that cliffhanger ending, I can tell you I’m waiting on pins and needles to see what happens next.

Readers looking for a mesmerizing love story will be sure to devour this novel.

Garreth... Garreth is Garreth. Garreth is leuk.

Teagan McNeel is an average teenage girl that often gets bullied by the mean girls in her school, but thankfully, she has a reliable BFF, Claire, and a caring mom. According to Teagan's mom, Teagan's dad "disappeared" when she was just a little kid, but Teagan figures that it's code for he walked out on them. A new guy, Garreth, transfers to Carver High School and he's super good looking, charming, nice, and is the quintessential good guy-- he even has a rosary in his car! Much to Teagan's disbelief and the mean girls at school, Garreth actually pays attention to Teagan. As they get to know each other, she notices a star on his hand and his other mysterious ways. She comes to find out that Teagan is an angel, but not just any angel....her guardian angel. Garreth warns Teagan of a dark angel that will cause some problems for her. But Teagan wants to know what on earth a dark angel would want with her? On top of that bad situation, the more that Garreth tries to protect Teagan, the more energy he loses, which puts him in a compromising position. Teagan realizes the seriousness of the situation at hand; she must not only protect herself, but also her friends and family, and maybe even Garreth. Jennifer Murgia's debut novel, Angel Star, is an engaging read that fans of angels will delight in.

It's no surprise that I am a fan of angels. After reading Hush, Hush, I became even more of a fan of angels in literature; I definitely will take them any day over vampires or werewolves. So, needless to say, I was a fan of Murgia's use of angel mythology in Angel Star. I liked her take on angels, especially guardian angels. There's really something special and magical about guardian angels and Murgia truly portrays that. Garreth is exactly how I would picture a guardian angel to be.

Regarding the plot, it's definitely fast paced. I finished this novel quickly and there were moments that were suspenseful. Murgia definitely surprises her readers at a few points in the novel, which only increased my suspense. It's the perfect combination of anticipation, romance, and fantasy. Lastly, I really like the fact that I can easily recommend this to my students as it isn't too edgy or inappropriate, which is always good to know.

My only issue with this novel is how quickly the relationship formed between Garreth and Teagan. Now, don't get me wrong. I think Garreth and Teagan's relationship was extremely endearing and romantic. But for me, it didn't seem believable at times and was rather rushed. Historically, I complain about this a lot when it comes to relationships in YA so maybe it's my problem? Lately in YA, it seems that boy and girl meet, boy and girl talk, and immediately boy and girl fall in love. I know some readers enjoy this immensely, but it always irks me. I recognize that this has worked for Shakespeare with Romeo and Juliet and countless other stories, but in most YA novels, it's just not believable. My students probably enjoy the whole love at first sight or syllable scenario, but I am a sucker for the type of relationship where the boy and girl are friends first and gradually fall in love as they get to know each other. But that's just my personal preference and I know a lot of bloggers that disagree with me. To each its own. And keep in mind that this slight issue will definitely not deter me from reading the sequel entitled Leminscate, which is due out March 21, 2011.

All in all, Jennifer Murgia's Angel Star is a strong debut that fans of not only angels will enjoy, but fans of the paranormal genre as well. I mean, really, who doesn't love angels? I look forward to meeting Jennifer at Bring YA to PA later this month!

I really love books that have angels in them, no idea why, but there’s something about their celestial manner and heavenly heiarchy that just makes them so good, or so bad.

Review
Jennifer Murgia’s debut young adult novel, ‘Angel Star’, was a marvelous, fast-paced adventure of a young girl faced with a new awareness of non-human beings and the danger surrounding her knowledge. Murgia explores symbolism and the existence of ‘guardian angels’ that will take you on a journey of a lifetime.

One aspect of ‘Angel Star’ that I highly enjoyed was the picture that Murgia painted with her words. The details that she illustrated were very concise and specific without being overdone. I appreciated the world that she created and I felt welcome to jump right in for the ride.

Along with being in the young adult genre, ‘Angel Star’ explored teenage issues, such as insecurities, bullies, best friends, and first love. All Teagan wanted was a regular high school experience, since growing up without a father made her home-life not so normal. She lacked an outward confidence that her best friend, Claire, made up for during the constant harassment by most popular girl in school. And first love, le sigh, in walks in Garreth, her Guardian Angel (literally). But with light comes the dark to balance it out, and Garreth opens Teagan’s eyes to a frightening truth and dilemma that only she can undertake.

I adored the characters that were portrayed in this book. Teagan was so easily identifiable as the normal girl that just tried to survive adolescence unscathed. Claire was so likable as the fun-loving partner in crime that challenged Teagan’s boundaries each day. And I was absolutely smitten with Garreth. He was the most perfect angelic love interest. His unwavering love for Teagan was sweet and charming.

On the other spectrum was the mysterious and provocative dark side that threatened to tear Teagan from her world and her new-found love. She had to learn to use what she has buried inside of her to save what matters most in her life. But the dark side explores passion and the excitement of danger that overwhelms and confuses her during this momentous situation.

The fight between light and dark consumed me while reading, I was not sure at any point what would happen. As a whole, I really enjoyed this book. The concepts that Murgia introduced were so creative and fresh that I was on my toes the whole time. This story had so many twists and surprises I was completely mesmerized and never wanted the story to end! This story left a big cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read the next installment called ‘Lemniscate’.

This is a book I have totally and completely fallen in love with. I kept telling my sister and friends- You got to read this book! You got to read this book!- until it made them mad! LOL!

Angel Star is a book that will draw you in from the very first page and preoccupy your mind and sort of even monitor your actions(you may spill the milk while thinking about it,lose track of what you are otherwise talking about and only want to wander in your Angel Star world, etc) until you are finished with it!

Jennifer Murgia has most skillfully united the worlds of mythology, fiction, fantasy, fact and the Holy Bible. Her extensive research has made the book even more interesting to read, easier to love and more delectable to devour! She has written a brilliant novel-one that will stay with you for a long time.

I loved the characters of Teagan,Garreth and Hadrian. The transformation in Teagan is dealt with carefully and with a lot of care. Garreth is such a calming presence in the book. Hadrian is a more complex character, but so effortless in his charms! Generally preferring the ‘good’,Jennifer Murgia had the power to sway even me towards the ‘dark’ side with her writing! I was torn between Garreth and Hadrian. Now I know how difficult it must have been and is going to be for Teagan! *empathizes*

Another thing I must mention is the relationship between Teagan and her mother. I adored the mother-daughter bond. So deep, loving and caring. I rarely read about such a bond in YAs. It’s more about neglecting mothers and abused and tortured daughters! *not a fan*

The book will take you through such a glorious journey replete with bullying, love, action, romance and surprises, that you will be praying for more and more. I certainly felt a void in me after I was done with the book! I agree that Angel Star ends with a cliffhanger but its one which for once, didn’t bother me much. Firstly,I want to read more and more of Jennifer Murgia and secondly, the book granted me an extremely satisfactory ending. Its an ending which will leave you complete and incomplete, wanting for more.

Get over Patch! There are two hotter, sexier and more mysterious and more gorgeous angels waiting for you in Angel Star. Go grab your copies today! Read it! You can never be disappointed with this one. I am totally and completely smitten! I so cant wait to read the sequel Lemniscate! 2011 is ages away!! :(

*off to dream about Garreth and Hadrian*

Angels seem to be the newest paranormal sensation and it’s easy to see why. They are beautiful, protective, powerful, sometimes snarky and sometimes gentle. The angels in this book fit this description perfectly; if all angels are like this, then more angels please!

Angel Star is the story of Teagan, a seemingly ordinary seventeen year old girl, and Garreth, the new boy who might just be something more than he seems. At first, parts of the beginning seemed very familiar, almost as though the reader could see Ms. Murgia’s inspirations. But as the story progresses it was clear that Angel Star is a unique story. I really liked that the story had two overlapping themes. The first was learning about and accepting your own special gifts. The second was the battle between good and evil or light and dark, and the acceptance that everyone has some of both. There were a few mentions of religious themes, but they were touched upon very broadly and integrated into the story so well that they were not jarring nor did they take away from the story.

What really stood out the most was how relatable Teagan was throughout the entire story. Even as she began to see how truly extraordinary she is and what her true purpose was, she remained relatable. Overall, Teagan’s story arc was wonderfully executed as she went from the girl who gets picked on by the popular group to learning about and accepting her inner strength. Garreth, as her protector, strikes the perfect balance of caring, strength and vulnerability. They complimented each other very well and it was clear they were meant to get to know each other. Together they were one of my favorite couples to read about and get to know.

The action really started when Hadrian came onto the scene. While there were small glimpses of Hadrian throughout the first half of the book, the reader learned about him though Teagan and Garreth’s discussions about him. He is quite the character - dark where Garreth is light, very confident and magnetic. It is easy to see that Teagan and Garreth will have their work cut out for them in the sequel.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Angel Star. It will definitely be one of those books I will buy and reread several times.

Angel Star is not a common young love or fantasy story, is deeper and meaningful. It talks about a fight, the one we all know: Good vs Evil, but not only covers what happens around Teagan, but what happens in the inside of her mind, is her personal interior battle the hardest to fight. Teagan is like any girl, pretty normal- apparently- but you can see how she gets more mature, who she changes and that even when everything che believes in is not as she thought it was, she relies in herself, she trust her heart and soul to know what to do.
Even when it felt like the story had some holes in it, like some pieces didn´t click together at some points, which take some of her initial strength, the background of the story is very well thought- besides having strong researched basis- and is powerful, so it compensates any missing piece.
One of my favorite parts was the romantic part, because Angel Star presents a very powerful love, transcendental and completely pure. Is not a teenage crush, or something based in physical atracction, is LOVE, and I think that´s hard to achieve in a teenage love story.
The pace feels like sometimes gets stuck but is actually really good, because things are developing and then just happen, so you cant stop to expect something blowing up in your face. And the final part is really good, leaving exactly the necessary for the next book: Lemniscate.

My thoughts...I am going to keep this a short review because I don't want to give away any spoilers. Let me say that this is a great read and I highly recommend it to fans of YA paranormals, especially ones with Angels as the main characters.

There were several memorable characters in Angel Star. Teagan, the heroine, is a typical teen, struggling to fit in and deal with the usual bullies. She has a strong sense of right and wrong. While she is not without her flaws, I like her confidence in her beliefs, even in the face of temptation, danger, and peer pressure. The predominant male character Garreth provides us with just the right amount of mystery and intrigue. He possesses that personality and confidence that most people flock to. Another character that sticks in my mind is a girl named Brynn. She is just downright mean, so much that I have to wonder if she has an ulterior motive.

The storyline in Angel Star was easy to follow, fast paced, and very enjoyable. There was a perfect blend of action, romance, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. The story uses some symbolism in the form of the Angel Star on the cover. Jennifer Murgia did a brilliant job of describing the scenes and providing vivid imagery of each situation. I felt like I was really there.

Overall, Angel Star is a very well written debut for author Jennifer Murgia. I will be watching for more books in the series, as well as different titles from this talented author. This is one to add to your wish list!
