The dead wait for no one.
When a teenaged girl is discovered in the woods, Medical Examiner Summer Jordan suspects her death is more than an overdose. Still new to small-town southern politics, Summer charges ahead with her theory and draws the ire of one of Roselea’s most powerful families.
Investigator Cage Foster convinces Summer to work with the sheriff’s office instead of going rogue. Together they follow a trail of teenage sex, drugs and lies.
Summer soon has the killer in her sights, but before she can cast the net, he strikes too close to home. Alone in the woods, Summer knows she must strike first. How far will she go to bring justice to a grieving family?
Stacy Green is the author of the Lucy Kendall thriller series and the Delta Crossroads mystery trilogy. ALL GOOD DEEDS (Lucy Kendall #1) won a bronze medal for mystery and thriller at the 2015 IPPY Awards. TIN GOD (Delta Crossroads #1) was runner-up for best mystery/thriller at the 2013 Kindle Book Awards.
Stacy has a love of thrillers and crime fiction, and she is always looking for the next dark and twisted novel to enjoy. She started her career in journalism before becoming a stay at home mother and rediscovering her love of writing. She lives in Iowa with her husband and daughter and their three spoiled fur babies.
She is currently working on a new crime fiction series and is represented by Italia Gandolfo of Gandolfo, Helin and Fountain Literary Management for literary and dramatic rights.
Summer Jordan is the busy, sleep-deprived medical examiner in a small Mississippi delta town. An Iowa transplant, she’s still getting the hang of Roselea’s politics. Unfortunately for Summer, when it comes to speaking her mind, she doesn’t hold back, and this doesn’t endear her to those around her. This is a problem when one has to deal with living, breathing, human beings. With the dead, not so much. “The dead wait for no one.” Dead Wait is Stacy Green’s sixth installment in the Delta Detectives series and features Jordan, a character we’ve seen in previous books, but she’s mostly been in the background. This time, she’s front and center.
Inspector Cage Foster is also very weary because he’s a first-time father of a three-week-old daughter. He calls Summer to a death scene in an isolated forest late one night. The body of a teenage girl has been discovered, and almost immediately, Cage and Summer sense that something isn’t right. They suspect drugs but will wait for Summer’s autopsy and pathology results to show them the way. We get an introduction to the potential rift over jurisdiction in the person of Zane Roane from the Forestry Department. Fortunately, he’s not there to haggle about whose investigation it is, but there’s obviously no love lost between Summer and Zane. I would bet that the delta seldom gets freezing temperatures, but it's obvious that Cage Foster felt the frost between those two!
While Summer Jordan may question her ability to get along with living folks, she shows great respect when handling remains of the deceased. She is fully aware that this body was someone’s daughter, and she feels a profound duty to find answers. How did Hailey Carter die? Who was responsible? She promises Hailey’s parents – and herself – that she will find the answers. Does she cross the line in her inquiries? Where does her role as medical examiner end? Summer is a very capable professional, but does she become too zealous in her probe? We learn some background about Summer that tells us who she is and gives us insight as to why she feels the way she does. Green leaves some gaps, which makes me think that we will see much more of Summer Jordan in the future. I do hope that she won’t take new daddy Cage out of the picture too much, however. He’s quite a likable guy.
Dead Wait is a fast, easy read at 87 pages. Early on, I had a wild idea about who I thought might be involved in the killing. That was quickly kiboshed, and the true explanation became evident well before the end. As usual, it’s well written. Because it’s a novella, there isn’t time to stop and smell the magnolias. I missed the old mansions and Cage’s wife Dani, but there’s only so much a novella can offer. This one packs a solid, if predictable plot and a promising character in Summer Jordan.
Stacy Green's Dead Wait focuses on Medical Examiner Summer Jordan in this fast paced mystery. When a teenage girl is found dead Summer suspects there is more then meets the eye and is determined to find the truth, small town politics be damned! Once again Stacy is able to transport us into the heart of a small southern town as we watch as the mystery is unraveled and the truth is finally unveiled!
Cage Foster and the Delta Detective series by Stacy Green are one of my favorites. Investigator Cage Foster is called in when a teenage girl's body is found in the forest. Summer Jordan is the ME and she responds to the crime scene and examines the body. During the autopsy she finds a needle mark on the girl's foot but she doesn't believe this is a case of accidental overdose. As the medical examiner she speaks with the family who don't believe their daughter does drugs or is sexually active. Summer feels a personal connection to this case and does some additional investigations of her own. She finds that in the South things are a little different and politics, socio-economics situations should be handled with finesse and that she needs to be a team player if she wants to earn the respect of the local law enforcement and citizens. Some twists and turns and lots of lies and cover-ups.
