I think I only understood the book partially. It would probably be in my best interest to get to the source (Sartre's actual writing) and to not read it in dutch. Specific words in dutch and their double meaning made this a nightmare for me to read. Especially the famous subject object and "the look" were all explained very properly in this book. In the beginning some of his novels are related back to Sartre's personal experiences which helped gain vision and perspective on where those ideas might have originated from in his personal life.

I don't really see it as the book's fault that I had trouble comprehending some sections, the fault lay with me. I think it was an alright introduction all things considered.

Een inleiding op zijn werk. Heel moeilijk, droog en saai. Totaal niet slim om hiermee te beginnen, ik snapte de helft niet en van de andere helft had ik alleen af en toe het idee een vage algemene vibe te begrijpen. Maarja geef maar eens woorden aan de gedachten van iemand anders, dat is wat zo'n Martin Suhr doet. Ik vind het sowieso best apart dat er een hele academische traditie bestaat van het 'afstuderen op het gedachtegoed van een persoon'. Dat komt op mij toch over als een soort geobsedeerde persoonsverheerlijking, al zie ik mezelf het ook nog weleens doen bij een interessant figuur. Volgens mij is het leuker om Sartres eigen werk te lezen.

FINALLY! This was such a psychological essay. I'm glad it's finished. Still fascinated by Sartre, even after 200 pages of confusion haha
