If you like raw emotion, fast-paced stories, and characters that are imperfect and real, then you are going to love this contemporary romantic drama.

Aya Johansen is a young nurse working with refugees in a war zone, when she's captured by fanatical religious warriors. She's determined to break free, even if it means compromising her own values and starting a relationship with one of her kidnappers.

Kato wants to do the right thing, but helping Aya could cost him his life - and he's smart enough to know that if she ever escapes he'll never see her again. That alone makes it impossible to let her go.

Will Aya be able to convince him to free her before she's branded and sold as a slave? And if she achieves the impossible, can she ever live a normal life again and forget about Kato?

I love dark stories and those with themes of captivity/abduction are amongst my favorites. After reading the blurb for this freebie, I figured it would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, this short book failed to deliver the dark, gritty story that I craved.

This book tells the story of Aya, a young nurse that has volunteered to provide assistance in a country in the midst of civil war. From the start, their is an ominous feel to this story. You're just waiting for something bad to happen. She catches the eye of a handsome stranger at the market one day, only to end up being kidnapped by him and his fellow warriors later.

This is where I expected the story to get really dark, but it never did. Don't get me wrong, there were some abusive and downright creepy activities that took place (hitting, leering, etc.). However, this story did not really delve into the "dark" side like I expected.

Instead, Aya is repeatedly rescued by her handsome stranger in a nick of time. Then, the two quickly become an item and are lovey dovey with each other. Aya went from terrified captive to amorous girlfriend in no time flat.

Given the circumstances, much of Aya's behavior didn't ring true. This was one of those stories where I found myself rolling my eyes a lot at the implausible storyline. I wasn't buying it.

The writing also seemed choppy and needed some work, in my opinion. The characters were poorly developed and the storyline was also lacking. Instead of embracing the dark subject matter, the author seemed to be afraid of tackling the darker topics, which doesn't work for me. If you choose to write dark stories then do so. If not, then don't. Just don't try to straddle the line.

Overall, I give this story 2 - 2 1/2 stars. It needed some work. I won't be continuing this series presently.

This book was an okay read for me. It was one of those I'm not home to read the series I am on now so I just grabbed something off Amazon that was free. The Accidental Slave could have been so much better if it would have been believable. The truth is there were parts of the book that were so outlandishly unrealistic that it was hard to really connect to it. That being said it didn't bore me and once I just let go of things being realistic I was entertained. This book was a little dark, but when I got it I thought it would have been darker. Not bad for a freebie.
If anyone would like to read this book it's still free right now on Amazon. I don't know how long it will be free but go check it out here is the link.

I received a free copy from instafreebies.com.

Be aware that this review will spoil everything.

A beautiful cover and a captivating title, but I hated this book.

Aya is our main character. She is a nurse helping in a country during times of "war". I put it in quotes because no war was actually described. I was only told that the king-in a 21st century setting....-has declared that no slaves (women whom are raped) are allowed, opposing the religious practices of the Masi Warriors. So they got mad and war occurred. But what is this war? You get barricaded windows and sometimes waking up to shooting. Sounds like living in an unsafe neighborhood.....

So Aya is a nurse working in this war zone. She basically treats the raped women/victims. I'm not really sure who the Masi are at war with. Maybe themselves, the king, foreigners. Im not sure. But there are others who are working in this charity organization. One in particular are security personals. Who do what? Who knows.

Aya and one of the security personals go to the marketplace where they are both kidnapped. But I must question, why in a war zone do two people wonder the streets??

Anyway, Kato, our oh so handsome Masi warrior is one of the four who kidnapped Aya and her friend. Oh and he just finds Aya so beautiful with her innocent blue eyes.

Aya is branded as a sex slave to Kato's brother. While her friend is kept for ransom.

Kato's bother must "consummate" the branding of his ownership by raping Aya. Upon shots firing, Kato's brother leaves poor naked Aya tied to the bed. Kato comes and saves the day and has this protectiveness attitude. But then he starts to flirt with her TWO FREAKIN SECONDS AFTER HE UNTIED HER FROM THE BED. And Aya didn't feel like she should be afraid. No she liked it. All Masi are know as rapists, but gosh, was he just so sexy.

In the end, Kato buys Aya from his bother but must let his brother watch as he has sex with Aya.

Now Aya calls what Kato's brother did to her as rape, but when this attractive guy tells her they must do it or his brother will rape her, then Kato is just having sex with Aya. Not rape. Even though she said she didn't want this. See the author is playing with the word rape. Aya said no but gorgeous guy insists they have no other way. So it's not rape. So Aya makes a big show in this. Making Kato moan and all while his brother watches. Then his brother shots itself in the head while Aya and Kato have not-rape. But let me tell you the power of not-rape. Someone, not more the five feet away, shots himself in the head and you don't hear it. Only find out when your not-rape is over. Wow the power of not-rape sounds loud.

Skipping a few, Kato and Aya have sex, again. Yes permission is involved. But they may consider it now as "love making". I guess not-rape creates insta-love. So be aware to all those who hate insta-love. But on the plus, there's a new twist.

Aya manipulates Kato into helping her escape, thus letting him go home as well since Kato really is just an English man trying to get over his ex-fiancé cheating on him with his best friend. So why not go to a war zone, kill a few people, and possibly buy a slave and rape her,or him, depending on his preference, of course.

So as they escape, Kato kills his uncle, who is the general, because he made Kato whip Aya. Oh she had such a horrible whipping. You should read it. (Sounded like this just might be a new love thing the two of them may try out later). Buuut the WAR HAS ENDED! How? Who knows!!

So they escape blah blah blah. Kato really is a millionaire and Aya becomes a millionaire from the insurance company due to her rape and kidnapping (I'm no expert, but this just doesn't actually happen). Aya is Norwegian and Kato is English. But hey they're neighbors.

Skipping a lot of stupid, Aya is pregnant and Kato and Aya continue to have sex, but keep leaving each other, continuously mentioning all the things you assume they want to forget. Then they marry and at the end are pregnant again.

This book was insulting to all women who were victims of war and/or rape. I was offended for those women the entire time I read this novel. I'm still offended and hate the author for her lack of portraying a woman in times of war trying to survive while simultaneously, somehow falling in love. But that didn't happen. Aya was a victim for FOUR days and the author tried to make it as eventful as she can. But all we get is Aya wanting to sleep with one of her captures who isn't like the rest of them *rolls eyes*.

I would say the author played Stockholm Syndrome but she just didn't.

This was a horrible novel.

Aya gets taken and is sold as a slave to a man who is evil. She wants nothing more than to go home. Will Aya be able to get out of an her worst nightmare and get home and at what cost? Be forewarned this story is dark and not for people with triggers. The author writes a story that will have you screaming at the pages telling Aya what to do. I felt all of her emotions and could not put the book down. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and loved the characters! This is the first part of the three part Slave Series. Highly Recommend!

I received this book in exchanged for an honest review. This is the second series I have read by Elin Peer and I did not fully enjoy this book until I was almost half-way through.

Aya Johansen is a nurse helping in a war-torn third world country treating former sex slaves and refugees. Working for a charity organization called Spread Life, Aya is determined to spend a year helping where she believes she is needed.

During a visit to the marketplace, Aya literally runs into a local named Kato. The connection between each other is instantaneous – almost as if their souls recognize each other. The feeling is interrupted when Aston, Aya’s Security Officer comes to her ‘rescue’ and warns her about hooking up with locals. Aya doesn’t see Kato again until she is kidnapped, marked and sold as a sex slave to his brother, the second to the General of the Masi Warriors.

Kato joined the Masi war after listening to his father’s tales of his life in Spirima. When the king announced there will be no slaves, his uncle and family lost everything. Believing he could help his brother and uncle, he joined the Masi war and quickly learned that once you join the Masi warriors you are forbidden to leave. Longing for the life he had long ago, Kato hates the life he is living now. No longer recognising his own brother for what he has become and realizing his uncle is an evil S.O.B, Kato doesn’t recognise himself anymore besides following orders and dreaming of home.

From the moment Kato lays eyes on Aya, he is reminded of an angel and after she runs into him, his arms immediately envelop her. He is shocked when she laces her hand over his shoulders and asks him if they have met before. As she continues to speak with him, he is reminded there is still light in the darkness that surrounds him.

Kato hates himself further when his brother Jonul kidnaps, then buys Aya as a sex slave. He is in a state of shock and self-hatred which quickly redirected towards his brother after he finds Aya, naked, afraid and tied to his brother’s bed. When he realizes they haven’t consummated the tie between Master and slave, he knows the only way he can always protect her is to buy her from Jonul.

Aya is determined not to be one of the poor souls she nursed in the refugee camp. When Jonul tried to rape her after tying her to the bed, she fought him as much as she could until he left after hearing gun fire nearby. Although disgusted with the knowledge Kato is fighting for the wrong side, she is grateful for his protective attitude when it comes to her safety.

When Kato explains the only way to ensure her safety is to buy her from Jonul, she reiterates to him she will not belong to anyone. He assures her the purchase is only as a protective measure but Jonul will only agree to the sell if he is able to watch the consummation between them. Although scared of the proposition, what begins as a ploy to make Jonul jealous of the love and desire from Aya to Kato, quickly becomes much more and when the act is over, Aya and Kato find the room empty before a gunshot is heard. Jonul has committed suicide.

Aya convinces Kato to take the chance to be free and go home. Using his protective nature to her advantage (whether it is to be a conscious act or not), Kato obtains documents to allow them both to travel as a husband and wife. In the dead of night, he hides Aya in a house opposite the General’s headquarters in search of a car and insurance to get them across the border. It is during this time, Aya is found by another Masi warrior who tries to rape her again. Knowing she is so close to getting home, she fights back but is overpowered by him before being thrown over his shoulder, to be a gift to the general. Aya is saved again when Kato orders the warrior to remove his hands off of her, but unfortunately, the general takes it as a sign she had escaped and punishment must be given.

Knowing that Kato doesn’t have a choice, she bends over a desk and is whipped by Kato – who is just as twisted up about the act of hurting her as she is at receiving it. The general on the other hand wants to see Aya suffer, so he takes over and whips her harder. When his back is turned, Kato stabs him in the back and they take the opportunity to free Aston and the slaves before seeking freedom themselves.

The path to return home is dangerous. Following the death of the general the remaining Masi warriors surrender and the war is declared over. All Masi warriors are to be executed so it’s now Aya’s turn to ensure Kato is able to return home to England.

Posing as husband and wife, they are able to escape but returning home is not all as it seems. Aya is confused about her feelings towards Kato especially knowing that he was one of her kidnappers and although she tries to distance herself from him, she cannot stop the strong pull towards him. Taking a chance, she catches a flight to England and learns that Kato doesn’t just work with computers, he is the owner of one of the leading Computer and software firms in the Country.

It is during this visit a lot of unresolved issues come about. Hiding secrets from those around them and not being open to one another about what happened and also their pasts, keep the distance between them. Although saying yes to his proposal, Aya still leaves Kato after learning Jonul was his brother. What frustrated me is that I felt she was sending him mixed signals. She was insecure about his relationship with his ex but after returning home to Norway, she thought it was okay to go on a date with her ex. She wanted Kato to be truthful but then she was never fully honest with him and so they kept repeating the cycle.

It took the world learning about Kato’s gap year to finally see that she can be his protector too and when the opportunity to help win him back came along, Aya took the chance. The ending was good but short. I felt the epilogue could have been a little longer.

This is a long winded HEA which to me could have been finished about 70% in, but in all, it was an average read.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Aya went to Africa to a war torn country to work as a nurse in a slave refugee camp and found a totally different world from Norway in every way including the weather. Treating the victims of the brutality of being a branded slave was eye opening and repulsive at the same time. At the local market she met the eyes of a man and felt something she never felt before and didn't understand.

Kato, Mari warrior felt the same and more as he saw Aya and felt a light he had not felt for over a year since he came to be with his brother another Mari warrior. One day the Mari captured Aya and another aid worker, Austin and her captivity began with being branded as a slave. She was sold to Kato's brutal brother and Kato set out to save her.

The Accidental Slave: Aya's Story is full of violence and pain, so if you find that objectionable this is not a story for you. It is also full of adventure, suspense and love despite the horrible situation and most importantly it has a happy ending.

This is the first book I have read from Elin Peer and had me hooked from the beginning. This book starts with a dark read, leaves you gasping your breath, wondering what on earth will happen to Aya, will she survive after being kidnapped and branded for slavery. Soon she is saved and Kato makes it his mission to save her, get her to safety. Once safe they both attempted to get on with their lives, only much to their denial of falling in love.

This book contains kidnapping, in a foreign country, beating, rape, slaves, suicide, murder and a powerful love story. The book is full of mixed emotions with lots of drama.

WOW. I read a lot of new authors and this one has nailed it first time. Exciting, sexy, romantic, sometimes funny, all rolled into one. Not full of fluff like the colour of the carpets and the style of the windows etc. I have since read parts 2 and 3 and would recommend these books to anyone who likes a book they can't put down. For as long as she keeps writing I will keep reading.

Gripping

Aya is strong, courageous and willing to do anything to survive. Between her and Kato they find a connection that keeps her alive while his brother owns her, until Kato buys her off of him. Their connection will hopefully help them both stay alive. Good, thrilling story.

Horrible

This edition is riddled with typos that are distracting. The story is ridiculous. It’s not “dark romance” it’s just a waste of time.

The Accidental Slave

Just finished reading this book. What a roller-coaster ride! The first section tells the story of a kidnaping by brutal religious fanatics and the action is horrific enough-reminiscent of the worst excesses of ISIL. But it's the aftermath of the kidnaping of Norwegian nurse Aya that really appalls.

Author Elin Peer has really got a grasp on her two main characters, Kato and Aya. and a deep understanding of slavery and its psychological effects on two people who start as enemies and become lovers.

In a way the treatment of the lovers is more brutal than the kidnapping itself. The western media never lets them alone as they struggle with their traumatic experiences and the meaning of them when they try to assume a "normal" life.

The highs and lows of those experiences kept me on the edge of my chair as I read right through to the end at one sitting. I wasn't even sure I wanted to read the book, which came to me free from the author, but having read it I bought the other four books in the series. Elin Peer is one author who can hold me spellbound!

I liked this book, although the subject of people being sold was distasteful, the issues within the book for Aya could be compared to subjects of modern slavery - sometimes people feel like they have no choice, and sometimes the cruel truth, is the only choice is how you behave to reduce the extent of abuse, rather than escaping it. The book was intriguing as the author could have taken the plot in so many directions, this author chose to make it a romance, but you are never quite certain if there will be a happy ever after...I did not think I would like this book but have been given the opportunity to read different types of books to review - so i have opened my horizons a bit. For a heavy subject it was a gripping read, I don't agree with the person who wrote being bored reading the book.

Unique!

Very interesting story with well developed characters! The story was a little dark, but definitely a page turner. I completed the book in two days and found it hard to put down. Aya is a beautiful strong woman who chose to see herself as a survivor instead of a victim. Kato strong alfa male who stood up to family to do what was right and save Aya and himself from the nightmare in Spirima. I received a free copy of this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for something unique to read that challenge your way of thinking. It is easy to judge but you have to ask yourself what would you have done if you were in both of these characters situation.

Psychological romance

Captor or savior? Sinner or saint? Love or hate?

The lines between questions are blurred in this intriguing dramatic romance. Aya is smitten by Kato at first sight, as he is with her, a deeper emotion for both of them than insta-love. He and his cohorts kidnap her to be a slave, which leads to conflicted emotions for both of them.

Without adding too many spoilers, the remainder of the book is a swirl of emotions, reactions, misunderstandings, and more. Based on the circumstances, the time frame seems compressed and many events are implausible for both characters, Stockholm Syndrome and all. Some better editing would be a help also.

the three stars are because i liked the overall story line and the characters but didn't enjoy the style and narration. the writing seemed rush and lacked description. transitions were poor. i am really sad over it because i am a huge fan of the Men of the North series by that author... so maybe i had high expectations... since this series was written before, i can say that Elin Peer worked on her craft... i will probably read the second and third installements because i am already invested in the characters that were introduced in the accidental slave. i just hope that it wont be as difficult to read...

This book is like none I have ever read. The author takes a subject, a very real and raw subject that we witness and hear about so many times in today's world and turned it into an updated fairy tale of happily ever afters. You felt the characters emotions in every aspect, every turn of events and every rise and fall..
I had my speculations when I first read the synopsis, I though this book would be too dark, twisted and violent. But it was not. Although there are scenes that are graphic. They were handle as tastefully as one could while writing about the subject matter.
The Accidental Slave and Elin Peer have easily found a spot amongst my favorites.

So many turns and surprises !! Aya and Kato first meet at a marketplace and the next time they meet its in totally different circumstances. The way that he cares for her is just so sweet !! This book brings so much light on a very dark situation. And the book just keeps getting better and better as the time goes on. If you’re looking for a dark sweet suspense then this Book is for you !! But if raping or suicide scenes gets you triggered I’d strongly suggest you give this book a second thought. But other then them I think you’ll be fine. This book really is something else and I strongly suggest you read it if you’re in the dark suspense romance kinda thing :)

Aya, a young naïve nurse from Norway goes to a civil war torn Spirima thru a humanitarian group to care for refugees. She thinks because she is there to help, no one will bother her until she is kidnapped by a group of rebel Masi warriors in the market place and branded a slave. Kato is a disillusioned Masi warrior and once a Masi warrior the only way out is death. He is one of a group that has kidnapped Aya who has been sold to his brother Jonul a man that feeds off inflicting pain, suffering and even death on others.

I really struggled to finish this book but I made it through it. I kept waiting for something to really happen. It could have been significantly less pages and not missed a bit of the story.
I'm more of a "bold" story with stronger men kind of girl and this was definitely not that kind of book. If you don't mind mellow guys that seem to be as much of a victim as anyone else, this is the story for you.

OMG What can I say.... This book ahhhhh! Love this book completely. It had me hooked from the beginning. Loved every page and word!
I rarely connect with characters the way I did with this book, and although the topic leads you to important discussions, where not everything is black or white, although Aya and Kato's love story grows in the worst conditions and everything is so mess up, well... love won. 5 stars!

Some of this was on the dark side - but I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the way he was tormented by the choices he made - yet still tried to protect her - putting himself in danger. I loved that Aya was a strong female character - not giving up. This was definetly not the typical kind of book that I read - but once I started, I couldnt put it down. I will definetly be reading the next in this series.

This is the 1st book by Elin Peer I've read & what an emotional experience this has been. This dark romance opens with Aya volunteering to work as a nurse in a war torn country still living in an age of religious feuds that include slavery of women. If you're looking for a book that has an actual plot with twists and turns and still gives you that HEA you're looking for, this is definitely for you. Elin Peer has absolutely made my TBR list and can't wait to start the next book in this series

Very touchy and sensitive story

The theme was sensitive and the author tried her best to be careful and discreet with the issue. The book has a lot of grammatical errors the author should have invested in a good proof reader. There are pages in the book where the flow of the story is not fluid and felt the conflict between Kato and Aya moves back and forth in one direction then on the opposite direction. For what it’s worth Aya and Kato’s story is unique and strange.

Wonderfully complex

This story was so original with making a whole country up that you would never want to step a foot in. The main characters are so torn but made for each other. It's a beautiful story how they go through the bad and ugly and kept finding each other after denying their feelings for each other. I want to keep reading the series.

Be warned this is a dark tale with things that may be disturbing to sensitive people. This story stretches your emotions from one gambit to the next with a strong female character who does what is needed to survive. Loved the character and while some of the book is a stretch it is still quite enjoyable in a dark way. Full of action and intrigue a great read.

When I started reading the book, I was quite angry with how Aya was treated and I didn't know if I could continue reading, but like Elin Peers other books, I was caught and both Aya and Kato also came under my skin. It's a dark story that ends as it should, yet you're in doubt while reading it.
Looking forward to start reading the next book in the serie.
