After the Earth suffers a natural catastrophe that has brought with it EMP-like devastation, Colton Rayner’s family must fight to survive in an unfamiliar world. All modern means of communication have been lost and times are hard; there’s no electricity, stores have been looted and abandoned, gas pumps don’t work, and there’s no way to buy food or call for medical help. The family finds they must rely on horses, wagons, and their own ingenuity and will to live.
The patriarch of this farm family, Harold Engquist, had tried to prepare his loved ones in advance with the skills and the provisions needed to endure hard times, but did he do enough? Will his food stores attract desperate people who are in search of food and clean water, or worse yet, the unwanted attention of the degenerate Claggit family?
Meanwhile, Abby, a lovely stranded stranger, unloads her two horses and leaves her truck and trailer on the highway to go in search of help. She happens upon the family's farm, which soon pits Colt and his cousin Tyler against each other as they vie for her attention.
This survival fiction / contemporary western / romance novel is sure to pull you in when you join this family as they try to adapt and look to the future.
Lisa Poché Calhoun is the author of the exciting survival fiction novel, "Superflare: The Fortunate Ones." Prior to writing the book, Lisa worked in front of the camera in the film industry. Attracted by life behind the scenes, she became a location scout and worked on productions from commercials to feature films, including "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, 1 and 2." She worked her way up and by the time an injury sidelined her, she had been the Location Manager on feature films. Between movies she had intermittently written for newspapers and magazines and realized she now had the spare time a novel demanded. Thanks to the success of the novel and requests from her readers, she plans to write a sequel.
Her thirst for knowledge keeps her reading and researching subjects that interest her. As her understanding of the subjects covered in "Superflare: The Fortunate Ones" grew, she felt compelled to write the book. She chose “survival fiction” as her genre and wrote in a style that submerges her readers into the story. She lets the characters tell the readers what's happening and about themselves.
Lisa and her husband John make their home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and enjoy time spent with their family, their cat and dog. They have two retired show horses she calls her “pasture ornaments.” They live in the city, but she grew up on a sugarcane farm and often points out that she’s a country girl at heart.
This is a great read! It grabs your attention and keeps it for the entire book. It makes you want more. I couldn’t put this book down and found myself looking forward to reading it each night. Look forward to their being a sequel to this book. It definitely rates a series of books!
This was a well-researched, fast-paced book. While this is not my usual genre, the synopsis drew me in. I could not turn the pages fast enough. The characters were so real and believable! Lisa Poche Calhoun made this reader feel as though she was part of the apocalypse. I could have been a character within this book. I could not wait to see what would happen next. As a high school English teacher, I will be recommending this book to several of my students who enjoy reading this genre. It is well-written and not filled with vulgarity. While I am 100% satisfied with how this book ended, I hope Lisa writes a sequel as she certainly left the end open enough to do so.
A great entertaining novel about a family dealing with a very frightening situation! You have to try this one out! It's got adventure and enough romance to make it enjoyable for anyone!! A must read!
This book makes you think about your odds of surviving a disaster. We are so dependent on technology would you even know how to start? The characters are very well developed and the plot is well researched to give the book a realistic feel. It was a refreshing change from the zombie books on the market today.
This is not my usual genre and I found Suoerflare to be a thought provoking book as you never know what lies around the next corner of life. Are you able to take care of yourself or are you so dependant upon technology that you wouldn't survive a natural disaster. Love the characters. Exciting, attention grabbing, once I started reading I hated putting it down as I wanted to know how the family fared. Look forward to more books by this author.
This new author hit the ground running with a (plausible!) post-apocalyptic novel written in a gritty, realistic, relatable manner. The characters are true to their locale - the rural South- and draw us in to what will happen next as they experience the aftermath of the Super-flare! Waiting now for a sequel which will surely not disappoint.
