Literary Nonfiction. Sports. Roger Federer is a modern obsession. He is one of those few athletes—like Muhammed Ali, or Usain Bolt—who has transcended his sport. His long career has seen him win the most Grand Slam singles titles of any man in history, while amassing untold wealth, and a heroic reputation. But why does Federer matter so much to so many people? In ROGER PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST, Christopher Jackson considers Federer's place in philosophy, in history—and even in the history of aesthetics—to approach the meaning of the man. When you've finished this book, you'll never look at Federer—or at sport—in the same way again.
Blending philosophy, poetry, artistry and sports in a tennis ball is a poetic art achieved incredibly by Roger Federer in a sustained career (this blending is also achieved by the author in his book).
Roger caught the artistic eyes of millions of tennis fans through his playing style.
This book deserves more reads and ratings, especially from those who appreciate art and tennis.
Rather than a traditional biography reporting on the life & career of Roger Federer the acclaimed athlete, this book approaches Roger Federer as a being more akin to a figure to those with more spiritual inclination.
While some may consider him a “God” in the world of sport and tennis , I truly appreciated the interpretation of his play as poetry thus presenting a notable figure also, in the blend of philosophy, sport and art.
I particularly enjoyed the comparisons to classical art history and Federer’s athleticism.
I would highly recommend this book to both the sports fan and the arts patron.
Mind it isn't about Roger as such, rather kind of an essay on the greatness of a sport figure. Nice, quick read. Quite liked the juxtaposition of sports following being akin to a modern religion with Federer or Djokovic spiritual inclinations.
Sport deserves serious treatment like this but I would just read David Foster Wallace instead. Most of this book is too clever but some of the reflections work.
