Magic is real, but Tara’s life isn’t a fairy tale.

From humble beginnings, Tara’s managed to work her way into a great job researching Dark Energy, aka “magic,” in Chicago. She has a beautiful house she renovated with her own hands, and a loving extended family, but she hasn’t found her soulmate … Not that she believes in soulmates.

Lionel is a Light Elf. Despite being of dubious heritage and being born a peasant, he’s risen in the ranks to serve the Elf Queen. Like all true elves, Lionel has a soulmark to identify his soulmate … He just hasn’t found her yet.

When Lionel’s and Tara’s lives collide and Dark Elves strike, they’re forced to work together or perish. Friendship and more grows between them, but dangers loom … Tara is more important than she knows, and Lionel is more important than he wants to admit. Both of them have choices to make.

Will Lionel choose a “perfect” love over Tara? How much is Tara willing to give up for a happily ever after?
They might find that in an uncertain world, the love you struggle for is the only certain thing.

C. Gockel got her start writing fanfiction, and she is not ashamed! Much. She received emails, messages and reviews from her fans telling her she should 'do this professionally'. She didn't; because she is a coward and life as a digital designer, copywriter and coder is more dependable. But in the end, her husband's nagging wore her down: "You could be the next '50 Shades of Gray' and I could retire!" Unfortunately, the author isn't much for writing smut. She is sad about this; she'd love for her husband to be able to retire and just work for her so she could nag him.

At the moment, Ms. Gockel is working on the next installment of her Archangel Project series.

Books like this one drive me crazy when I'm trying to write a review. On one hand, I stayed up late reading, so that's a sign of how the story and Lionel and Tara sucked me in, right? And let just say that I love, LOVE, the fact that Tara comes from a bicultural family and that having her hair done by her Latina mother, as well as the color of her skin informs her character and her actions and most importantly for romance-lover me, comes to bear on the Romance central to this book: human Tara and half-breed Elf Lionel. I would recommend this book based solely on that, alone.

With the caveat that you need to have a really, really high world-building and plot ambiguity tolerance if you haven't read the rest of I Bring the Fire series yet (as I haven't.) And only have a general knowledge of Nordic mythology mostly based on Wagner Opera and Avenger movies.

There's a lot going on. There's light elf vs dark elf in Alfheim, a queen, rebel dark elves who were possibly punished light elves escaping to Chicago, Odin the all-father, etc. etc.

I never really understood what was going on in the beginning of the book when Lionel and Tara meet as Lionel's people go to Chicago ostensibly to chase escaping elves but Tara ends up seeing one of them beating a child-- this is never resolved blatantly, i.e. none of the characters explain what was going on. And there seems to have been no consequence for Lionel calling on the Destroyer? Not sure what happened there.

Also, Lionel and Tara spend the entire book escaping from various places and difficult political messes....and that was fun and great for the first two thirds of the book, and then the last third felt really rushed and strange and I got a little impatient with the obvious attraction they had for each other that mostly was channeled into forehead kissing.

But then the authors would go and make fun jokes like Tara being attracted to Lionel's pointy ears and thinking she needs to explain Spock to him...and not only Spock but Spock and Uhura......

So it's fun. And while i was confused, I didn't mind being confused for the first part.

I'm still processing how I feel about this. I admit I went from "yay, Black heroine in an urban fantasy, cool" to "hmm...something feels unfinished" which is why it took me so long to finally finish this.

I don't mind slow burn romantic relationships, but this one was overly angst filled and had that heroine waiting for Mister Right so no sex or even twinges of lust until the hero comes along trope that I really really wish authors (ESPECIALLY women authors) would not do.

Still, it wasn't a bad read overall but it just couldn't keep my attention, and I need to figure out why.

More to come.

I'm not a romance reader, but I wanted to try this as the author is one I respect. Overall the world is interesting and well-developed. I enjoyed the concept and the way everything was handled, from the elf society to the gods. The characters were also great, they were very much fleshed out, interesting, real people. The romance bugged me a touch but that's purely because I'm not a romance reader. It made sense to these characters within this world, and I feel as though romance readers will enjoy it.

Overall a very solid book.

Loved it. I have to say though, if I haven’t read the author’s other series based in the same world I would have been a bit confused about some things. But overall I think you could read this as a stand-alone.

The foreword was wrong

This book should NOT be read without having first read the I Bring the Fire books... there is almost no world building and very little character development. In the case of Lionel, there is zero character building by 57%, which is where I had to stop. Although reasonably well managed, I also did not enjoy the present tense writing. I may look into the actual series whose world this book was set in, but it's at the very bottom of my reading list.

Could not get into this story AT ALL because of the weird verb tenses. It tries to be written in present tense, but there are so many tense changes that it just doesn't work. Should have just been all past tense to make it simple and easy to read. This might be a fantastic story, but I just can't get over the verbs to find it.

Missing pages

There are many missing pages in this book to enjoy reading and I wanted to read it there are at least 5 pages. I thought it was just blank pages in between chapters, but this are pages with the words on them. Please fix so I can read the story.

This paranormal romance fantasy story was the perfect balance of adventure, suspense, humor, science, fantasy, world-building, and heart-warming but clean romance that lacked absolutely nothing for not having any explicit sex described on the pages, the slow build up to that kiss had so much riding on it and had you so much rooting for these two main characters that whether you like reading romance or hate it you will love this book and actually I could say the same about the sci-fi or fantasy elements of the book-it's all in such a perfect balance in what is just a well told story that no matter what genre you like reading you can enjoy this story, because it is just a perfectly crafted story. It is also perfect if you are twelve or one hundred and two years old either, it is a story made to charm almost anyone and you don't need a prior knowledge of Norse mythology to enjoy although that will enhance your enjoyment and you don't need to have read her I Bring the Fire series about Loki and Norse Mythology because it is connected and happens at the same time as this book in the same universe and you will meet some of the same characters but this novel stands completely alone and on it's own. I loved this book and was just enchanted by its story of a human from Chicago and an elf and their adventures that sprawl across several realms-a hard to put down story that I don't want to spoil, just the right length of novel not too long either, just perfect in every way.

I enjoyed Soul Marked (After the Fire, 1) by C. Gocke and recommend it with a few caveats. I was initially intrigued by the great cover and the fact that it appeared to be the first book in a series. However, as I was reading it, I discovered that it was a spin-off of an extensive seven book series (navigation was a bit challenging due to previous storylines…but worth the effort, imo). Ms. Gocke has created a magnificent, wonderful world based on Norse Mythology where realms exist with previously little crossover. However, Humans are now aware of Loki, Thor and of course Odin and alarmed by their presence and the danger they pose. When Lionel, a Light Elf, enters the human realm he is rescued by Tara, a researcher of dark energy (magic). Tara and Lionel embark on an adventure that crosses realms as they bond and escape danger. The pair have sweet chemistry, but Lionel is centuries older than Tara and has a soul mate somewhere in his world. There is no way that they can have a relationship, him mortal and her human, is there? I found this story to be cute, suspenseful, funny and a unique read with a nicely detailed satisfying epilogue (I love it when a story is tied up nicely).

This is a love story with all the feels, plus a dizzying amount of world-hopping, from heartless Elves to baffling Gods and back to modern Illinois.

As advertised it stands on its own perfectly well despite being part of the long-running 'I Bring the Fire' universe series. It turns out that magic and human technology both work much better together, just like this pairing.

Part black and part Hispanic and all tech whiz, Tara finds an unconscious hottie with pointy ears under the trash bags behind her house. Part Light Elf and part Asgardian Lionel has been 'passing' as a Gate-keeping servant of the Elf Queen's court, but when a mission to Earth's Chicago goes awry he's suddenly unable to hide his unseemly non-Elf characteristics any longer. When the two are captured by Dark Elf rebels and escape, it becomes unclear if either of them have a future in any of the Three Realms, much less a future together.

It takes all their combined talents to save each other's lives, and then, the rest is up to the fates-- literally. Superb writing throughout.

**This book was provided by the author to Nerd Girl in exchange for an honest review.**

This book was a face paced read. I was intrigued by the Viking lore. Between the elves, monsters, gods, humans and other realms you will have your fill of interesting storyline. A lot happens in this book and it’s extremely action filled.

Tara and Lionel are great characters. Trying to find love in a world full of a never ending cycle of war and peace. My favorite though is Tara. She’s just got this way about her. I also love the fact that she comes from a bicultural family and all that entails. The specifics the author portrays about her history is really enlightening and refreshing.

Overall I really enjoyed the read. Although even though this book can be read as a stand still. I would still recommend reading the previous series first. It will make it better in reading this book. Also... CLIFF HANGER ALERT!!

I enjoyed this book a lot. In fact, I read it almost entirely in one sitting. I liked that the heroine was black and Latina, and I liked that nothing was quite how it first seemed.

Obviously the Light Elves are the good guys and the Dark Elves are the bad guys, right? But as you find out more, you start to question that. Odin helps rescue Lionel and Tara, welcomes them into his home and family, and offers to make Tara immortal. But is he really the just and benevolent god he appears to be? I started to wonder if there was more going on with Loki than we’re shown here, as well (guess I’ll have to read the other I Bring the Fire books to find out!).

Ultimately, my favorite thing about this book was that instead of accepting the soulmate fate had chosen for him, Lionel went his own way. The elves and the Asgardians judged him for all the things that made him different, but Tara accepted him for who he was.

I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable tale. It had all of the best elements including love and ending in a HEA but, it didn't come easy and throughout most of the book, the writer made you believe it wasn't likely to happen.

The author did a wonderful job of combining mundane occurrences with that of magical occurrences. The main character had no magic but her employer considered her "magical" as she could always find a way to fix whatever he needed fixing around the office or with his computer. Their world did consist of magical creatures although they didn't have any interaction with them.

Her employer was working hard on developing a device that could give a warning when there was a magical creature in the area. So, what happens when the mundane runs into the magical?
This is a good choice to read if you want to have a reason to smile, laugh, and be sad, all in one book. This book has it all!

Wow, loved this story so much. The author is correct to say that you didn’t have to have read the “I Bring the Fire” series to enjoy this story. But what I really liked is that if you have read the series, you will see some subtle references that connect the stories. Also, who would not like a story that has Dare in it even if just a couple of sentences.

Tara, a human, finds Lionel, an elf, under a pile of garbage and that is when her world changes and the adventures begin. Tara and Lionel are wonderful together. They remind me of Amy and Bohdi in some ways, like how protective they are of each other. The story moves quickly and find yourself not wanting to stop because you want to know what is going to happen next. I could say a lot more but don’t want to spoil it for you.

If you like this story, you will love the series.

If you can't have a soulmate - does that mean you won't have a soulmate?
In this exciting and enchanting new series after the I bring the fire series (Loki!) I found all the things I loved about the old series and some new and intriguing stuff that made me devour the book. I absolutely like the heroine, she's awesome in all her facets, and I liked her male counterpart, even though he has some flaws (but then, he's male and from a completely different culture, it's obvious there must be some in my eyes). His mom is adorable, hers not so much, and I can't wait to read how the story develops from here on.

Such a wonderful combination of all the races that are out there in this wonderful land of romance, magic, elves and witches, that alone should be enough to draw everyone in, but there is so much more. MS Gockel has such a wide breath in her realm of literature. is a wonder to behold. This is a brilliant read! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author.

It would've been 5

If it wasn't for the fact that the ending is a massive anticlimax.

*SPOILERS*

The protagonists are escaping from The All Father, humanity is under threat, the Norns are expecting Ragnorok at any moment, and then wham. The book ends with an Epilogue set something like 20 years later, and there's no explanation for how Odin is pushed back, or why Ragnorok didn't occur, or what happened to Thor or Loki. It's like there was supposed to be a series, and then the author changed their mind and stuck the Epilogue on instead!

I read this as a part of the Gods and Mortals box set.
I would like to give this a higher rating but I struggled to create the world in my head. It’s an unusual twist on elves, humans and mythology.
Everything is presented but not fleshed out enough for me. By the end of the book I still couldn’t ‘visualise’ Lionel or Tara properly. There seemed to be a lull part way through and then a rush in the last couple of chapters. World building was sketchy also. Overall, I did persist and read the whole book though.

Never the End!

Again, an adventure full of Elves, Monsters, Hero's and Bad Guys to fill my day. I hope to see them again in future stories. Inky will need his own story too! I don't like books with Cliffhanger's because there should be a resolution at the end, even if its not the end of a story just that adventure. Life goes on after all, no matter what. I recommend this story and others by C. Gockel!

Another fabulous C. Gockel tale

It felt so nice to plunge back through the world gate into C. Gockel's universe where magic and technology struggle for balance and where true soulmates might live in entirely different worlds.

Can two people from extremely different cultures manage to set aside their differences and work together to save one another and themselves ? You owe it to yourself to read their story and see.

It's ok

I admit I'm adding a star for the diversity. The story feels a little rushed & confusing, but I'm hoping reading other tales in the series will resolve that. Even so, if this is a stand alone novel, it should be able to stand alone. The romance is very out of the blue which makes it awkward, but the world the story inhabits is interesting. Not a bad book, so consider it an invitation to read the main books of the series.

I love the blend of fantasy and romance as cultures clash! The heroine was particularly good, with the subtleties of race (especially her hair troubles) adding an unusual layer that really deepened the story without feeling like I was being preached at. Engaging worldbuilding, a fun story, and a romance wrapped up in one book --- perfect!

I'm actually giving this book 4.75 stars. I did enjoy reading it, but found the story didn't really 'click' with me as fast as other urban fantasies I've read.

However, I enjoyed getting to know the characters and delving into the world created here. I enjoyed the diverse shift from usual UF books, and I may even read another book in this series in the future.

Good choice.

I had never read this author before but I was intrigued by the cover. Good choice. I was pulled into the storyline from the first page. The story was solid with a lot of twists and turns to keep it interesting. I liked the way the romance between the main characters developed over time. I also love an epilogue. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Pretty good...

I am not a romance reader, and this book is definitely a romance. That being said, it was good and kept my attention. I am especially fond of Inky! Nothing wrong with the book, I just enjoyed the I Bring the Fire series more. While they too had a romantic thread, they focused more on the action, rather than the romance.

Norns... I waited a bit before reading this one and all I can say is this... I loved it. I wanted to cry, to laugh, to hold my kindle close and to throw it to the other side of my bed because I knew things were going to happen but I couldn't handle reading it. I adore every book in the Fire series and this one is just another slice of that beautiful, crazy world

This book is beautiful and romantic with just enough drama to spike your blood pressure. I loved the parallels between the main characters, with the mixed race and their above average intelligence and love for doing the right thing not the easy thing. But will all the things that tried to pull them apart they still end up making their way to each other in the end.

Soul Marked is wonderful!

Loved this story and the characters! Lionel and Tara find love in a chaotic world where magical beings, Gods and goddesses, and humans are in a never-ending cycle of war and oeace.
