Meant for Aspirants of the Civil Services Preliminary and Mains examination this book covers the syllabus of Indian Heritage and Culture of the General Studies Paper I. The author has provided a wide ranged knowledge base on Indian art paintings music and architecture with the help of several pictures and diagrams which he believes will help arouse the reader s interest. The content is also supported with a plethora of questions that will help students to prepare for the examination.
The recommendations for this book were many. It does a good job of putting everything on the syllabus at one place. Very systematic and it is a fun read. But, it is not free of flaws. Especially I found many mistakes in the north east section (including Assam ) and the author has even left out many aspects of this transmission region while discussing some topics. And things like that make me question if there is some mistakes in the topics of other places too, or has he left out information on that part too. Buy the book for the topics and syllabus but please do some research yourself and don't follow this book blindly. I wouldn't advice against buying it. It is useful.
I got around to this book because it is recommended for UPSC preparation(the exam to get into the Indian Civil Services) and decided to go ahead with it for it dealt with a topic that is eternal and endlessly interesting. It is a vast book crammed with an array of information that reinforces the fact that India is unbelievably diverse. Every single chapter highlights this. Going through each chapter slowly and supplementing it by additional reading from the internet could be one way to go ahead read and absorb this book(This also led me to other interesting nuggets of information); Because the book is geared towards an exam causes an information overload and causes your head to spin. It is impossible to remember and appreciate what the book showcases because of this and if you have no plans to attempt the exam, the book turns into a daunting read.
Pros •Comprehensive •Good for that-which-i-am-afraid-to-name
Cons •Personally, I'd prefer if it were more simplified? Like, listing different dances according to the state, or a map of the country that shows different dances in a state. It's easier to retain stuff like that. •I have an old version so I'm not aware of the recent updates. But mine does not have all the works done by rulers listed in one place. And I desperately wish that were the case.
Book is interesting to read , it is never boring and captures the reader However few mistakes in book 1.in important Indian personalities segment harhvasrdhan reign is mention as 6 century BC however it is ad 2.Images illustration although plenty are of low resolution
This book is a staple for Civil Services exam preparation. Even if someone is not preparing for the exam, he/she can read this book to get a detailed insight about the rich heritage of India.
This is not a scholactic book rather purely meant for competitive purpose. This is just a culmination of materials and content from various sources into one. This has less to do with the knowledge addition by the author himself. He has just done an assemblance of diverse contents into one place. What struck me was the poor way an interesting portion 'Art & Culture' was presented. It seemed like reading a guide rather than a fun learn. But then, you cannot include everything yet make it interesting. Purely, meant for competitive prepartion. Not for those inetersted in history and culture.
