This third installment of the Lantern series was just as magical as the first two but with a twist. I loved that Chess took a minor character from the second story to make the main character in this one. The story kept me reading non-stop til I was finished. These stories are suited for middle grade but anyone can enjoy them.

Evelyn and her sister are going out for their first Halloween since they lost their parents and were separated from their brothers. Her cousin Carla couldn't take them all into her home in Erie. In Havenbrim, Master Machin has taken a new apprentice. It's the boy he gave the torch, Graham. Now Graham no longer had to live in the woods as Machin puts him to work. Somehow Evelyn gets trapped in a lantern by the lake and gets transported to another land. How will she get home and does she want to go back?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this story for a fair and honest review!

Graham saw the sign. Sure, he couldn’t read it, but he knew it meant the mysterious Havenbrim lamp maker was looking for a new apprentice, and Graham needed that job. He has nothing else, but a fervent desire to learn a skill from the Machin. It must have been Fate smiling on Graham, the day Machin chose him above all others to apprentice under him, but maybe Fate could have helped him not be such a disappointment to Machin…at least that is how Graham felt, until the day he was tasked with fitting that one globe, and what unfolded would be nothing short of magical.

Evelyn’s move to Pennsylvania wasn’t easy. She missed her home, the ocean and the people she left behind. Maybe that was why she focused on the lone lantern on the pier that was always burned out. It was right before Halloween when something happened with that lamp, it was as if it were reaching out only to Evelyn with eerie blue sparks and the world seemed to stand still, until…

Back in Graham’s world, the globe he had fitted came “alive” with a blue glow that took the shape of a girl, Evelyn. How could they save her from the globe? How would they return her to her world? Even Master Machin is stumped. Could it be she was meant to come here?

TORCH by Chess Desalls is the third magical tale in the lantern series that takes us from our world to the world of Havenbrim, magic and adventure. Beautifully written, this tale of fantasy comes alive with all of the glory of fantasy and make-believe come true! Written for younger readers, each scene becomes a mental picture to enjoy, from contemporary Pennsylvania to mythical Havenbrim where two young people find friendship and a place to belong. But would that place be in Evelyn’s world or Graham’s?

Chess Desalls has given younger readers a piece of magic to read, enjoy and believe in.

(Read the first book in the The Call to Search Everywhen series. Did not enjoy, therefore will not be reading anything else by this author.)

I absolutely adore these Havenbrim stories and Torch is no exception. The world is richly written and the characters are so well described that you can't help but to fall in love with them, cheer them on, and hold your breath when they might be in trouble. These are modern day fairy tales and I do hope that despite the three stories now being collected into an anthology, the author might return once again and give us more glimpses into the mysterious world that is outside our own.

Torch is the third part in the Lantern series, and I must admit that I felt like it was the weakest book (I feel the same about the cover as well!) Although it was nice that one of the main characters had my name with a different spelling! However, I wish this book went slightly more in depth with the story, and maybe fleshed it out more, the way Lantern itself felt like a full book, although it was only a novellette. Torch didn't really feel this way. However, weakest book or not – it was still nice to wrap up the story, and I appreciated how the author figured out yet another way to change up the main story so it doesn't repeat! The same tone is also kept, and I adored it. I'm definitely glad I got this one to finish up the series.

Not my favorite book in the series, but a good wrap up and conclusion to any questions you might have had concerning Havenbrim. Still worth a quick read if you need something light with an edge of mystery. I would recommend it. 3 out of 5 stars.

This one was better than the sequel, but the first is definitely the best.
I liked the characters in this one, but I felt confused most of the time. I didn't see too much of a relationship devopment between Graham and Evelyn, but they were still cute. All in all, a cute, quick, clean read.

Of the three, this was by far my favorite. Reviewing the series separately. The novellas are not truly meant as standalone pieces.
