This book is the translation of Niharranjan Ray s highly acclaimed magnum opus, Bangalir Adi Parva. It is a seminal work on the history of the Bengalis from the earliest times to the beginning of the Muslim rule in India. This volume is as much a work of literature as it is of history. It is not a story of kings and the extension of their power but of the life of ordinary people. Thus, through detailed, methodical discussions on origins of the various peoples, their language and literature, science, trade and commerce, religious practices and rituals, the author draws a vivid picture of society and its development through the passage of time. This able translation by J. W. Hood has retained the vibrancy and subtle nuances of the Bengali original. This paperback edition has a Foreword by renowned historian Professor Sumit Sarkar. In his Foreword to the volume, he Niharranjan Ray was, indeed, a towering figure among my generation of historians. But not many scholars are familiar with his writings these days. The new edition of the English translation, which has done full justice to the original version, hopefully will rectify this.

এ বইটি রচনাকালের রীতি অনুযায়ী সাধু ভাষায় লেখা, কিন্তু নৃতত্ত্ব ও প্রত্নতত্ত্ব নিয়ে মসৃণ ও সুগম পরিভাষা প্রণয়নের কাজটি এতো সুচারুভাবে করা যে মুগ্ধ হতে হয়। মাতৃভাষাবিমুখ বাঙালি পণ্ডিতদের উচিত বইটি আগাগোড়া পড়ে লজ্জিত হওয়া।

ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষ ভাগ থেকে বাংলা ও বাঙালির ইতিহাস রচনার যে উদ্যোগ দেখা দিয়েছিল, বাংলা ভাষায় তার শ্রেষ্ঠ নিদর্শন হিসেবে এই বইটিকেই তুলে ধরা চলে। রাখালদাস বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় তাঁর অতুলনীয় 'বাঙ্গালার ইতিহাস'-এ বাংলার রাজবৃত্তটির একটি সম্পূর্ণ ও যথাসম্ভব তথ্যনিষ্ঠ রূপরেখা তুলে ধরেছিলেন বাঙালির সামনে। কিন্তু জাতি তথা জনগোষ্ঠী হিসেবে বাঙালি অতীতে কেমন ছিল, তার সম্বন্ধে সেভাবে আলোচনা তখন করা হত না। তার কারণটিও সহজবোধ্য— তামত্রশাসন ও শিলালিপিতে জনজীবনের কথা থাকে না। তবু, প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক উপাদান এবং সমকালীন সাহিত্যের নানা উল্লেখকে ব্যবহার করে নীহাররঞ্জন এই বইয়ে লক্ষ্মণাবতীর পতন অবধি সময়কালের সামাজিক, অর্থনৈতিক ও ধর্মীয় জীবনের একটি বস্তুনিষ্ঠ ইতিহাস রচনায় প্রয়াসী হয়েছিলেন।
ভূমিকা, যদুনাথ সরকারের 'পরিচয়-পত্র' ইত্যাদির পর মূল বইটিতে আমরা নিম্নলিখিত অধ্যায়গুলো পাই~

১২. ধর্মকর্ম: ধ্যানধারণা;
১৩. ভাষা, সাহিত্য, জ্ঞানবিজ্ঞান, শিক্ষা-দীক্ষা;

১৫. শেষ কথা— ইতিহাসের ইঙ্গিত।
পরিশিষ্ট অংশে ছিল লেখমালাপঞ্জি এবং চিত্রসূচি।
স্বাধীনতার অব্যবহিত পর প্রকাশিত বইটি, অবিশ্বাস্য শোনালেও সত্যি, আজও সর্বার্থে প্রাসঙ্গিক এবং প্রামাণ্য রয়ে গেছে। রাজবৃত্তে কালানুক্রমের ক্ষেত্রে হয়তো পরবর্তীকালে প্রাপ্ত মুদ্রা ও লেখের ভিত্তিতে শাসকদের বিন্যাসটি ঈষৎ বদলাতে পারে। কিন্তু সমাজ ও জনজীবন সম্পর্কে নীহাররঞ্জন যা লিখে গেছিলেন, তার চেয়ে বেশি নির্ভরযোগ্য কিছু আমরা পাইনি; সম্ভবত পাবও না।
এই ক্লাসিক রচনাটি শুধু ছাত্র বা গবেষক নয়, প্রত্যেকেরই পাঠ্য হওয়া উচিত। তাই এটি এখনও পড়ে না থাকলে সেই ত্রুটি সংশোধনে অবিলম্বে তৎপর হোন।

Compelling read, explores the cultural and social history of ancient Bengal in a detailed manner. This book is quite avowedly a history of the Bengali 'people' and not merely a dynastic summary of the rulers as most history books tend to be. Most of the historical evidence is from the Pala and Sena periods, and hence these two get the most extended treatment. The author explores the ethnic origins and miscegenation between different races in ancient Bengal, the nature and geography of the land and the waterways which were so integral to the land. He also charts the economic life of the people, whereby a rural life based on agriculture was most prominent, albeit there was an extended period of trade and commerce in the Pala period. A nation dependent on agriculture implies systems of land distribution, and these warrant a detailed look. Caste and class patterns and their intertwined nature is explored, and the nature of villages, towns, administrative patterns. In the chapter, 'The Dynastic Round', the traditional dynastic narrative is discussed. Everyday life, the food, entertainments, religious beliefs, the prevalence of learning, art, architecture and music; all get a detailed overview. The last chapter is a good summary of the book.
