Fitchner's dramatic rescue attempt and the birth of the Sons of Ares reach their dramatic conclusions, but they are just the seeds of a revolution that will change the Galaxy forever and lead to the events of Pierce Brown's epic Red Rising saga!
Hello. I'm Pierce Brown, the author of the Red Rising Saga, a NYT #1 bestseller. I figured I'd write you myself than have corporate copy pasted below my totally natural author photo.
In my books you'll find stories of men and women finding their inner strength when all seems lost. You'll also find me exploring themes of love, violence, hope, and power--what it means, why people seek it, and how they hold onto it.
This is the story of the birth of a revolution, which like many others begins with a small pebble that ends up rolling a mountain. Where that pebble seems to be a story about a forbidden love, of star-crossed lovers (Fichner and Bryn); and it is about people governed by castes and where those castes begin to realize that their so-called differences are nothing more than inventions of others with interests engendered by greed.
After all, not very original either. Dramatic and all.
Even though we already knew how this story would end, the ending still seems too abrupt.
I think we all agree that Sevro deserves his story to be told in its entirety. So this call for a spin-off (hint-hint)
I am afraid that the type of art used is not very to my liking.
It's been years since I bought an actual comic but I'm a huge fan of Pierce Brown's Red Rising books so of course I preordered this prequel comic series the moment it was available (I even ordered the two different covers for each issue because I'm a geek and I just had to have them!). Let me start by saying that you really need to read all 6 instalments to get the full story, each issue is around 30 pages so when you combine them all together you're probably looking at roughly a graphic novel sized story (around the same length as a volume of Saga) overall but split into 6 sections.
I bought the comics as they were released because I wanted print copies and it hadn't been announced if there would be a bind up edition but I'm happy to say that there are now 2 different versions available to preorder, a normal hardback and a slightly more expensive signed edition. I think the comics are out of print now unless you want to purchase a digital edition so this is brilliant news for anyone who missed buying them sooner.
Now you've got more of an idea what you're actually getting let's get to the interesting stuff like the artwork and the story. This is a prequel so it's set before Red Rising but I definitely wouldn't recommend starting here - you'll end up giving yourself spoilers for the main books if you do. I do think fans of the series will love getting to see Fitchner's early years, how he met his wife and baby Sevro. It's very easy to see where Sevro gets his attitude from that's for sure!
The artwork is wonderful, quite dark in colour but that fits the gory and violent tone of the story perfectly. I love the added touch that each conversation bubble is coloured to match the birth colour of the character speaking. I really enjoying being back in this world but via a more visual format and it left me wanting to reread the rest of the series again. This is one of my all time favourite series so I'll jump at any chance for more from this world and this was a lovely addition.
This hit me so deep I can't even! Despite already knowing what is going to happen and how the whole Ares thing started, seeing and reading the actual scene was just too much for me.
The thing that killed me the most was when Sevro's mom sang him Eo's song, I just couldn't handle it.
I'm sad this is the last comic book though, I loved and enjoyed those so much!
In the end, these comics turned out to be quite good, bringing more light to Fitchner's backstory and motifs behind his following actions in the Red Rising series. The story portrayed in this graphic novel was noting new as everyone who's read the Red Rising trilogy prior to it will be well-acquainte with the story of Fitchner. However, Pierce Brown's Red Rising: Sons of Ares gives much more detail, capturing every single gruesome detail. At first, I was not the biggest fan of the art style, and even thought I'm still somehow iffy about it, I got used to it after the first two chapters. This is most definitely a must read for all the Red Rising fans out there.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for kindly allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Right when you think everything is going to go according to plan, there is always a wrench thrown in the mix. I've been really enjoying these comics as they give the backstory to the Red Rising story and I am really glad I go tot read it! The comic can be pretty brutal, there is a lot of death and it doesn’t hold back on the gore which I actually really appreciate. The art for the comic is absolutely amazing and makes the story stand out more. As each comic went on I found myself still surprised in the turn that the story takes. I'm really glad that I got to read these comics as they add so much tot eh backstory of Red Rising and the rebellion within it.
THE SONG. excuse me while I go cry. you know what's going to happen. it's a prequel. you know! and yet! it was still so hard and I think when I reread the RR trilogy soon in preparation for iron gold, I'm going to see everything in a different light. oh fitchner.
“My love, my love Remember the cries When winter died for spring skies They roared and roared But we grabbed our seed And sowed a song Against their greed...”
I was prepared for this. I really was. But that didn't make this issue any less heartbreaking. Quite like Eo broke my heart, Bryn did the same. Of course, Eo had a larger revolution in mind than Bryn's maternal instincts, but like I said, it wasn't any less heartbreaking.
This series has been great with one major, unavoidable flaw... it was just not enough. I really wish there was more of it. Maybe a full novel instead of a graphic novel series would have satiated this urge in me more. But hey, as long as it is the Red Rising universe, I'll take what I can get.
This is the final issue. But, but... I want more. Without giving away spoilers, the drama was intense and heartbreaking. I got misty eyed near the end, and that doesn't happen often. But there's a loose end that bugs me, and I can't say it without spoiling. Just... Gah! I hope they do more in the near future.
That was such a great series of comics about the rise of Sons of Ares. If you love the Red Rising trilogy and like to know more about the sons of Ares, this comic is perfect for you. The art is still not the very best, but the story is just fantastic. Remember that this should be read after finishing the trilogy or at least after finishing the second book because a key reveal will be spoiled if you read it before. And, now I just have to wait exactly 10 days, because Iron Gold is coming on Jan 16th, can't tell you just how excited I am.
Long confusing ramble of a rescue operation to end it. By most measures it could be said that the whole operation wasn’t worthwhile. At the very end there’s a time jump to lead into the previously written story, wrapping things up finally.
As for the whole series. . . This is a case of not knowing what I’m missing, because I haven’t read the previously released one; this is a prequel to that one. Despite the story it tells, there’s not much here that’s joyful, or even that new or interesting. Had I known more about it coming in I probably wouldn’t have read it. 2.5 pushed up to 3/5
If you read the complete 1-6 graphic novel it is quite nice and interesting. Not much is been told you didn't know already when you have read red rising. But still nice. However, all the individual "parts" were too short in my opinion. Just when you got into the story it was over already. Combining them would have been a nice short prequel graphic novel.
I really liked this series! And yet again I have finished WAY before the next book about this world comes out... when will I learn! Highly recommend for all fans who have read the original three books (you'll get more out of this reading the books first). I'll be re-reading these back to back very soon.
Superb ending with a few surprises. I don't want to spoil anything but it satisfyingly ties together the story, as well as linking to the novels. Some great composition, especially the opening pages and a moment when some falls. A great combination of talents make this a first rate mini-series.
These were entertaining. It was enjoyable learning the backstory of Fitchner and how the Sons Of Ares began. I am glad I read these. Plus, I got to read more writing with the words gorydamn and bloodydamn! :)
So I saw that lots of people were unimpressed by this novel or were annoyed that it was so short. I think it was perfect. Don't read this if you haven't read the original series or you WILL be confused. Majorly. Anyway, it was the perfect supplement to the series and gave a nice image to complete the scenes that Brown had already painted with his AMAZING writing.
My heart breaks for Fitchner and Bryn. 😭😭😭 its hurts more knowing that Fitchner was probably soooo proud of Sevro for befriending Darrow during the Institute and being an avid supporter of the Rising despite not remembering that his mother was a Red. 😭 also Fitchner having to choose between Sevro and Bryn? We did not appreciate this man enough in Golden Son!!!

This played out a little differently than how he described it in Golden Son. But the fact he had to make a choice between Bryn and his son like it kinda makes sense why he harbours so much resentment for him in the first book. God I will never get over this series I’m not ready for Red God next year…
This would be a major spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the Red Rising trilogy. I like it though. I'm still not a huge fan of the comic book delivery, but it's cool to see Servo's origin and the creation of Ares.
