Editing!!! Missing words, extra words, wrong words used!! Character descriptions weren't consistent either. The mistakes were very easy to spot, no excuses on not correcting them. Hadley, I'm very partial to that name since it's my maiden name. She let the bullying define her entire life, which unless you've lived it, I doubt any of us can understand why. Wrigley, I am questioned why he pursued Hadley. He basically ignored her for years so why now? Spoilers follow so don't continue if you haven't read it... What he said to Livi was absolute crap! And Hadley excepted a weak apology for it. While he said he hadn't been with Livi while they were apart, what about other girls? I don't know that I buy that a guy who was very active sexually didn't move on after not having had sex with Hadley. Now, a silly rant, kids don't move out of their dorms at winter break. They haven't been in school for 5 months at Thanksgiving break either. Bottom line, the last two books in this series were a long time coming, and deeply disappointing.
This was ok! I read a few spoilers before I started and I was slightly apprehensive about the whole Livi thing!
The H gets annoyed when h doesn't acknowledge their relationship and he tells OW (whose interested in him) that h is nothing special and that it was just a phase he was trying out!
Now while I understand this annoyed some readers I did understand the H's reaction (was it right....no!) but this H is supposed to be 18 (and most 18 yr old lads are stupid, when their ego takes a hit)
I think through this book the H is always seen to have attention from OW and this could bug people as well! I don't think anything happens (definitely not when he's with h) but it's always in the background "how hot/popular he is"
It's possible that this is the reason the ending wasn't my favourite too. They argue (over the above) and separate. But it's the h that has to make the gesture to win him back......Hmmm? He messed up I get it and so did she! But did anyone else think that the h was the one constantly trying to hard!
It was like she didn't want to label what they had for fear it might run him off. And he seriously struggled with seeing the problem with that Livi bird! It would have been nice to see how'd he react to someone showing the h some interest!
I guess when reading this final instalment you have to take into consideration that they are supposed to be very young. I'll admit though that I did end this one with doubts for their future (a 5 yr on epilogue was alright) but I struggled with how these two would grow and complement each other!
Shutout was the fourth and final book in the Core Four series by Stacy Borel.
Wrigley Brooks was the youngest Brooks brother, gorgeous, fun, outgoing and was attending LSU on a baseball scholarship.
Hadley Marten was quiet, shy and socially awkward. She selected LSU so she could have a fresh start and a new beginning, putting the bullying and meanness of high school behind her.
Shutout was told in a singular POV, Hadley's. Wrigley and Hadley were both from the same small town in GA. They lived a few doors down from each other growing up but weren't necessarily friends. Wrigley was popular and Hadley was not. Once they were at LSU, Wrigley pursued Hadley hard; however, Hadley wanted nothing to do with him and kept pushing him away. Their relationship building and overcoming Hadley's baggage was the sole focus of the story.
I was torn over Hadley. I understood her trust issues from high school - she obviously was bullied. But once Wrigley showed genuine interest and they were dating awhile, I didn't get her continued whining. I wanted to see her confidence build but we never really got to see that progression and therefore, I was craving more.
I enjoyed the premise of the story; however, there were numerous editing errors, which were distracting. Otherwise, I enjoyed Borel's style.
This should conclude the Core Four series. I enjoyed all four siblings, the foundation of each storyline, and the family ties that were consistent throughout each book. A potential spinoff could include Aurora/Bishop, Matt, and Chris. I look forward to seeing what comes next from Borel.
First up I am going to say that I am so sad to say goodbye to this series, I fell in love with these characters, their antics and the amazing journeys they all took me on. Shut Out is the story of the youngest Brooks brother, Wrigley and the girl he finally sees that has been there the whole time. Hadley and Wrigley’s story is about growing up, living for the now and experiencing life. This book tore at my heart, it found its’ way under my skin and it made me cry. However Shut Out was a story a lot of us can relate to on such a personal level. It will make you feel like you are right there with them feeling all the hurt, pain but best of all you will feel the love and happiness that they find. This book was such a beautiful one to finish.
Good but not great. This book is the final installment to the Core Four series. I enjoyed the build up for Wrigley and Hadleys story but I felt like the book was like any other coming of age cookie cutter romance. I caught myself jumping paragraphs because I expected what was to come and I felt like I had read this same story a million times. Overall I give the series 5 stars. I think the last two books could have been better but the prior two made up for those weaknesses. So buy the series, read the books and maybe they will be your next favorites.
This book had so much potential. It felt like a skeleton, instead of a full bodied work. It could have addressed issues that are important in today's society- like bullying, self-esteem issues, and social pressures. I felt that Hadley wasn't a resolved character, she was literally rushed to forget her self-esteem issues that was from a life-long time of being bullied. I found it was highly offensive that Wrigley basically told her to get over those issues, there was nowhere in the book that addressed how she came to accept herself- apart from Aurora and Wrigley telling her she is beautiful a couple of times. But that is truly not enough to get over it, it's something that takes years to accept. I don't want to be rude, I want the author to see this as constructive criticism for her future books, because I feel she has a lot of potential if only she could build her characters and show us as readers that her characters have growth and strength. I loved Bender, it showed me that you have skill- but this book was not of that level. I look forward to your new ventures.
I enjoyed this book and it's because of that I am literally so mad right now that I cannot give this book a 4 star ratings. I was VERY set on to give this book a high ratings throughout reading this but the ending was rushed which is upsetting because there's an issue I felt that should be resolved but was tossed aside, just like that.
Uchhhhhh I just don't have many words really. It annoys me that this series was about the 'core four' yet only one of the books had the men's POV in it.
I didn't even think I was going to finish this book, Hadley has got to be THE most whineiest character I have ever met! I don't know how wrigley even stayed with her because quite frankly she was annoying however, in the same breathe, I'm happy she ends up being the ass hole and not the male.
One thing that doesn't make much sense to me is how he doesn't give the time of at all in school, barely even says hi to her then as soon as they get to college hes obsessed? Hmm.
El ultimo de los 4 hermanos, llega al college y se reencuentra con su vecina, compañera, "amiga" de toda la vida, aunque si los prejucios de high school. Es asi que los dos son diferentes y por tanto tienen un relacion diferenre.
The huge amount of typos and story errors make the book frustrating to read at times. The story line of all four books is great and the characters are amazing but Stacy needs someone to beta read and edit for her.
I absolutely loved every single book of this series I was waiting patiently for Wrigley he sure grew up and was so sweet and alpha just like his brothers this books are a must read
Ok it wasn't bad but I can't forgive the disgusting amount of typos and incorrect words to vs two for instance. Like you could have had a high schooler proof it more successfully.
I can’t even express how much I am gutted that this series has come to an end. I absolutely LOVE this series – my favourite book being Cutter – I have read that book at least five times. I wish this series could go on forever! (I have inserted this bit after the review was written) I apologise that this review turned into an ‘’I am annoyed at Wrigley rant’’.
From the moment I one clicked this book, I devoured it. I read it one sitting and was left satisfied. I really do hate to admit that but I wasn’t a massive fan of Wrigley. I think the only time I truly liked him was at the very end. Numerous amounts of times I wanted to shout at him to open his damn eyes! He didn’t stand up of say something when Hadley was being bullied as a child. As an adult/college student he was just as ignorant the majority of the time. Yes he made the move to become best friends with Hadley but: he was ignorant to what Livi was doing. He didn’t put a stop to it. He didn’t notice Hadley’s attraction to him. I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone so I will try and not leave spoilers but I will say this: I was so annoyed when Wrigley went on to speak about Hadley to Livi (in the pub). I thought that was out of order, what annoyed me the most was that when confronted Wrigley placed the blame of Hadley. Even when Hadley apologised for her actions (which in my opinion were not that bad) he didn’t want to apologise and STILL put the blame for his idiotic actions onto Hadley. That being said, I liked that Hadley became close/best friends. I liked the innocent and slight sweet feel to their love/attraction. Despite my annoyance at Wrigley, I liked him and Hadley as a couple. I liked their story. I can guarantee that I sound like a total nutcase after this review but I DID enjoy this book. If I didn’t than my annoyance at Wrigley would have slowed down my process on reading this book. I finished this book at 6am this morning, it is now 4pm and I am still annoyed at him! I liked Hadley, she had her faults. I wanted to shout at her to give in and admit her love for Wrigley to the world. But at the same time, after the way she was continuously treated by people growing up I understood. I adored Hadley’s friend Aurora and really want her to have a story – that is just me being greedy. I will definitely be doing a re read of this series soon. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and an enjoyable read. I don’t get this passionate over my annoyance if I didn’t truly adore a series/a story.
Final book and I think between the brothers, Wrigley is my fav!
OK, Camden and Wrigley. The beginning and end make the series worth it.
So Hadley is the girl down the street who's been the social outcast all her life. The fact she's heading off to college to reinvent herself, or become herself is actually quite exciting. Except she's not alone and the boy she's crushed after - Wrigley is there too.
Their bond and friendship is glued from their home town and Wrigley quickly sees Hadley for who she is. Yes they have their issues but think we can all relate to that voice inside our heads sometimes and letting the past ruin the future.
It was a lovely written book again without too much drama, but just enough.
Is it bad when I loved the 5 year epilogue more than anything? Probably but I missed them all as a group. I love how the author (Stacy) intermingled the book with Cutter.
They worked perfectly. I also loved reliving one of my fav scenes from it.
If anyone wanted an easier read series, this would be it.
I'm so glad I took my first chance on a whole series all together (which I've never done before) and so glad the Brooks Brothers came in to my life.
Okay so I absolutely loved this series....HOWEVER, this book did not live up to the rest of the books. It felt like a cop out, where it was a rushed job to just finish the series off quickly so the author could move on to another project. I was really disappointed because there was so much build up with Wrigley and the introduction of Hadley, and then...nothing. There was no plot development, no growth as a couple, it was just Hadley complaining about high school and then them 'sort of' getting together. They really weren't even a couple until the epilogue where it actually gave us a picture of what them as a couple 'might' look like. When I was about 3/4 of the way through I thought it must be a Part 1 of 2 book because nothing had happened yet or was about to happen in the story at that point. I was extremely disappointed, unfortunately this book put a sour ending on an otherwise phenomenal series. I'm not sure what happened but Wrigley & Hadley's story definitely did not get the justice it deserved. :(
I enjoyed it, but it seemed to be missing something. There was a lot build up and it in this story and seemed sort of stale to end and we only get her POV. I will like to read his POV. Hadley struggles to let the past go, she had to many insecurities. I really enjoyed Wrigley character a lot but I wanted to see them interact a little more. He was really sweet and it was really obvious that he really liked Hadley. They don't seem to have much in common or chemistry. I enjoyed the romance but I do have to admit that I wanted a little bit more from them. I feel like it took a really long time to get anything started and then when it finally did start, there was drama, a bit too much angst and not enough love story, not even sex. I kept waiting for it to get better and then it was quickly wrapped up at the end. It just wasn't all that satisfying to me. I have read and loved every Stacy Borel book but this one. It's far from my favorite.
I liked this one better than the third one. I understood Hadley, and her insecurities, especially thanks to the flashbacks. You don't erase years of doubts and low self-esteem in a few months, and I really appreciated the fact that the author didn't magically "cured" her.
One thing really bothered me towards the end, how Wrigley talked to Livi and didn't apologize for that. Yes, Hadley had lied (out of panic, IMO more than anything else) to his mother but she hadn't badmouthed him, or said things about him. His apology came too late for me, aftershe asked him for it. So it kinda leave a sour taste in my mouth. Also, I can't help but be super disappointed we didn't see their first time.
I'm happy with the epilogue, all brothers being in different situations and not the usual they all have kids etc etc.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Well what can I say about this, book. Funny; OK . sexy; yes. Sweet sometimes. Long enough; no. Ending; disappointing. I have read every other book in this series and was very happy with them , so when I went to read this book I was like yeah ending to this great series. I knew I would probably hate/ love it on some levels because come on its a last book, yet I digress. I was disappointed, to say the least . not long enough, no commentary from wriggly which it desperately needed, not enough build up or back story on wriggly part. And OK I don't read these books for the sex scenes usually but even I was disappointed in the amount of steam. In the end that's why I gave it a 3 because its was almost there but not quite.
No cliffhanger Standalone though part of a larger series Told from female POV Editing errors throughout
I have loved this entire series and this book, while not my favorite of the 4 was a quick cute read. Each book in the series is about a different brother and this one focuses on the youngest of them, Wrigley.
It is a cute story about two people who have known each other forever and finally come together but like most young adult romances it is filled with angst and misunderstandings.
The epilogue is nice to read if you have read the entire series. You get to catch up with all the brothers.
I have it four stars instead of five because of the editing issues throughout the book.
I just demolished this book in just a couple hours. I think the best part about Stacey Borel's book is the realistic vibe she puts out. This could have been my friends in college which made me love this even more (not the epilogue of course but you know what I mean)
Wrigley and Hadley are the icing on the cake to this series. The sweetest book out of the 4 brothers with the innocence of being in college made this my favorite book. I enjoyed following along the Brooks family as they fell in love and I'm sad to see them go. ( I would like to point out that we could always have one more shot at Bree...hint hint Stacey!)
Wasn't really interested in this book but the setting takes place at LSU which is my alma mater, so I gave it a chance. I was expecting to feel all sorts of nostalgia from the author mentioning popular landmarks on campus like the quad, the union, the original Canes, and Death Valley, but I was sadly mistaken. I'm wondering if the author even checked out the location before writing about it. Besides the setting, Hadley was very strange for no apparent reason. She was the main reason I didn't want to continue on with this book and the setting was the icing on the cake. If you don't know nothing about the place you're writing about then just make up a college.
Unfortunately I was disappointed again with the final book of this series. This book did not involve any of Wrigley's brothers and only a small snipet of his parents. In the first two books, the Brooks family was very close and the brothers were always there for each other but Wrigley was on his own in this book and he never even went home for Thanksgiving (holiday's were big in Camden and Turner's story's). I found myself skimming through the book, just to get to the end. Even if you read the other 3 books, you don't need to read this one to complete the series. I hope this author does better in her next book series, and I'll be keeping my eyes open for those.
Bullied girl has crush on popular guy/neighbor in her hometown. She goes to college and he's there and in her class. She's got issues and he's clueless. They start a weird relationship that goes off the rails.
There were alot of themes in this, but ultimately I felt like the bullied girl, our main character, was blamed for her "hangups" when she was bullied and needed some therapy.
Wrigley was painted in this clueless jock kind of way which was annoying. She tells him of her issues from school and he's like not at all understanding of them. We learned about his sense of humor in other books, where was it here?
