“It's all anybody can talk about. He's out there somewhere in the night, stalking the streets as he searches for his next victim.”
A killer is loose in London, copying the murders of Jack the Ripper. Alone on the streets, Maddie tries to find a place to hide, but she soon starts to see a silhouetted figure following her through the night. She tells herself that she's imagining the whole thing, but soon she finds herself trapped. Even when an unlikely savior seems to come along and offer hope, Maddie worries that she's not safe. And before the night is over, she comes face to face with the true horror that is stalking the streets of London.
Meanwhile, over a century earlier, Doctor Charles Grazier deals with an intruder in his home. Wanting nothing more than to complete his work and go to join his wife Catherine, Grazier finds instead that his noctural activities have drawn some unwanted attention. Can he get rid of this intruder and get back to his original plan, or will he be tempted to try an even more shocking procedure? And can anything stop the spread of lurid stories, detailing the crimes of Jack the Ripper?
In Darkness Dwell is the second book in a new horror series, titled The House of Jack the Ripper. This book ends on a cliffhanger, and the story continues in the next book in the series.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Unfortunately this is a "dnf" for me as the second book just did not seem as good as the first one in the series. The time jumps are still there with one chapter being about the doctor and one chapter being about Maddie. I felt that there was too much repetition with the doctor chapters as there wasn't nothing happening with him, except for but it felt like the same old thing from chapter to chapter with him.
With the Maddie chapters - they were just boring to me as nothing was happening with her.
This being an eight book series - I might pick it up later down the road to see what happens in the other books, but for now I am laying it down. Also no stars for books I don't finish.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 There's nothing wrong with this book. It didn't really grab my attention. It's the second in a series, and I really enjoyed book 1. The way book 1 ended,I couldn't wait to read book 2. Well, book2 started slow, stayed slow, until the ending. The ending was decent, but not sure if it was decent enough for me to read the 3rd book in the series
In this 2nd book Maddie from the Present still has a connection with Dr. Grazier from the Past. More and more of their storylines become clear as each book is written. Highly recommend and now off to the 3rd!!
In Darkness Dwell ( The House of Jack the Ripper Book 2 )
If you are a Jack the Ripper fan this is the series for you. I follow into Book 3 ! The BEST THEORY of th Ripper I have had the pleasure of reading. Doesn't disappoint. It's a realistic theory! I RECOMMEND !
Oh yes! This is just what I was wanting. At the end of book 1, I felt that things were heading in a certain direction but thankfully, not the one I envisioned.
Maddie is still trying to find her friend Alex, but gets very sidetracked by events in and around the abandoned house. Things are made even more complicated by a string of new murders, a strange figure that appears to be following her and sights that she would rather not see.
Meanwhile, Dr Grazier is having his own issues with the new 'acquaintance' Jack. This character is a great addition to the story, fitting in nicely with some of the historical facts of the time, whilst also adding his unique perspective and ideas to the story, taking things in a very interesting direction.
The feeling of 19th century Gothic horror has been obtained nicely, seamlessly balancing with a supernatural slant in modern times, used to very good effect. The only issue that I have so far, is the fact that the author specifically states that any similarity to persons mentioned is coincidental / fictitious, and then uses not only the name of the Rippers third victim, but also adds the nickname that they went by too. This adds a conflicting feeling to the story, as historically, the attack took place, but from a moral perspective this is disrespectful to the woman and her family. For this reason, I have given book 2 4 stars, even though I couldn't put it down. Later through the book, another victim is addressed, but no name given, let's hope things stay that way, as this is a series that is very much heading to be in the style of Penny Dreadful - One of my favourite ever shows
This series just keeps getting better and better. The past story is so demented and where it is going is such a cool twist on the Jack The Ripper story. I love what is happening with Maddie also. Just keeps you guessing. I’m going right into the third book. Hopefully get some questions answered but have the feeling I will just end up with more! I can’t wait!!!!
Can't wait to read the next book in this series. Easy fast read, ends so fast, I wasn't expecting it. Now I will be ready for the next book. This series is worth the read. Great character development and storyline.
I won't spoil the books here I will simply say Amy Cross is one of my favourite authors and I love her style of writing I cannot wait to read the next 2 books.
Such a fascinating story line, and the ability to keep building on it. Very well written, no hiccups in the flow of the story. You don't even have to try to remember where you are in the story to know what is going on. Thank you
This book was So close to a four star. I'm hoping that by the end they're four stars because I'm obsessed with this series so far! So this book has opened up what the rest of the series will be about. Book one introduced us to the world, this basically paved the way for the next six books. We're still following the same characters, both at different times in London. So far Jack the Ripper has 'come back' and the original Jack the Ripper is doing some messed up things. We also met a really sweet police who I ship with Maddie because I tend to want characters to get together. Yeah, I don't really know how to explain my feelings for this. The writing is so smooth and easy to follow, which is a must for me when reading. It's also so captivating. The plot is not amazing but the way it's executed is just perfection. Basically, this is something that I have a lot of feelings for and I couldn't be happier.
Maddie continues to walk the streets of Whitechapel and finds even more obstacles to overcome. Jack the Ripper is still killing and now all the homeless are being directed to shelters for protection. Maddie refuses to go because she's still 17 and doesn't want to be found or to go home. Dr. Grazier is still trying to help his wife overcome her cancer. He searches the streets and almost gets caught. After his wife Catherine decides that she's had enough, Dr. Grazieris ready to join her in the afterlife that he doesn't believe in. Along comes a street ruffian to help the doctor and you won't believe what their plan is! Amy Cross has my absolute full attention in this series.
Another installment of this take on Jack the Ripper that shifts back and forth in time.
It is gruesome and filled with crazy yet it also highlights the arrogance of the rich, especially in the original time of the Whitechapel murders. It also demonstrates how men thought of women - valueless and clueless. Another issue is how the homeless and other poor people are treated throughout that time and now; nothing has changed.
A creepy psychological read on more than one level.
So far the book has me wanting to read the next one so I purchased the 3rd in this series. I don't remember which book I read first of Amy Cross' but I am glad to have found this author. I have enjoyed all of her books so far. My favorite genre is haunting/horror/psychological thrillers. If you like those type of books then give one of Amy Cross' books a try.
I have enjoyed Amy Cross's older, gothic-flavored, haunted house stories. This Jack the Ripper serial that she fashioned is an interesting premise, however, I can't really get into it. Between two books the gore written has been too much for me. I will read the 3rd book in the series; I can only hope it might become too interesting for me to put down.
Book 2, the story continues, Maddie is still on the streets, trying to be helped by Wallace the police officer, Maddie is seeing strange figures all the time. Mean while the doctor now thinks he can return his wife from the dead.
Maddie spends a night in a police car keeping out of the torrential rain, while Police Constable Wallace [Wally to his colleagues] searched under the railway arches for a shadow figure Maddie was sure she's seen watching her.
Read this almost a week after the first book but have to say this wasn't as good. It turned out quite boring and meh. Won't read the remaining books since I don't see the story getting any better.
Broken Window and In Darkness Dwell are excellent! I'm now reading the 323rd installment Cradle To The Grave. These are must read books! If you love horror as much as I do I recommend reading these books.
