Etheny told me that she found a book in the library which transported her to another place. It’s hard to tell sometimes if Etheny’s stories are true, as you will see, so I will lay down the story as she told it to me to allow you to decide for Etheny told me that she found a book in the library which transported her to another place where she met a skeleton cat.
Emma's new book The Secret Cult of the Miners' Library is out now!
In the lead‑mining village of Wanlockhead, Scotland, danger runs deeper than the pits themselves. After a devastating mining disaster, sisters Rachel and Sarah are left reeling — one desperate to escape, the other just trying to cope with daily life. Amidst rising complaints about the library’s morally questionable books, Minister Laurie, a man grappling with his faith, becomes an unwilling witness to the Duke’s dark secrets surrounding the Miners’ Library and the spiritual corruption wrought by gold.
The Miners’ Library hides more than books. Georgiana, the duke’s restless wife, suspects her husband’s ties to a Jacobite plot that could destroy them all. Disguised as a man, she dares to infiltrate the society – only to uncover a bewitched mirror and a soul imprisoned within, feeding on the chaos it creates.
The Secret Cult of the Miners' library is a historical-fantasy fiction novel. Inspired by the village of Wanlockhead and its folklore.
Emma is a British-Scottish author of contemporary fiction, whose writing has been featured on Radio 2, and won second place in the Just Imagine short story competition with her story A Traveller's Daughter. It is possible to identify several themes in her novels – the relationship between parents and children and between siblings, obscure fairy tale references, and, more recently, the structure and organisation of society and how this relates to social challenges and the individual lives of her characters.
This short story is a great quick read! (My 5 yo son picked this out as a bed time story.)
We follow Etheny, where she's always in the library after school waiting for her step-dad Bob to come pick her up. She loves to read and will always have a book in her hand. One afternoon she comes across a The adventure bookcase, out of place, between the B and C categories. She picks up a book and begins to read. Little does she know, she has stumbled across a magical bookcase where she goes on a mini adventure!
Without giving too much of the story, this was a delightful light read and showed how Etheny was able to cope with her mom's passing. This is definitely for older elementary school kids going onto middle school, but my son had no complaints while I read it.
*There will be an edit to this review with my son's opinion this weekend.
E.L. Parfitt has a sweet way of making her readers sincerely care about what happens to her characters. Etheny, is exceptionally vulnerable as she face her fears in a dark and scary realm where ‘The Skeleton Cat’ rules. E.L. Parfitt had the most fabulous, stupendous magnificent idea when she decided to create this series of ‘Wee Stories, a collection of short stories that any parent would be happy to share with their children. I look forward to reading more.
