It’s all aboard for baby’s first train book! From the author of Plane, Bus, Ship, and Firefighters A to Z. Train chugs, Clickity-clack.Engine up front, Caboose in back. The amazing sights of a train ride through the countryside whiz by in this deceptively simple rhyming book. Little listeners will be mesmerized by this rhythmic, rhyming ride—perfect reading for kids on a roll! Praise for the books of Chris Demarest “Creative texts and brightly colored images. The words, while spare, have been carefully chosen to create a level of anticipation and excitement for even the youngest of listeners.”—School Library Journal on Train “Demarest describes things seen and felt during a plane or ship ride, at the same time creating a pleasingly rhythmic, dreamy mood. Demarest’s bold palette and unusually fluid lines lend a sophisticated, almost abstract air, furthering the impressionistic quality of the words . . . Very much a flight of fancy, this inventive melange of color, shapes and language may spur questions from youngsters beginning to wonder why the sky is blue, but the poetic trip launched here will let their imaginations soar.”—Publishers Weekly on Plane and Ship
First sentence: Train chugs, clickety-clack. Engine up front, caboose in back. Pass farms, cows moo. Over hills. Choo! Choo!
Premise/plot: A little girl takes a train ride. What does she see? What does she hear?
My thoughts: The text of this one is simple. How simple? Two to three words per page. (Mostly two words per page.) I will say this--briefly--that this board book doesn't use complete sentences to tell a story. I am not sure how many actual complete sentences the book has. But I do know that "Over hills" is not a complete sentence by any stretch of the imagination. Still, for little ones this one may work just fine. It's definitely focused on rhythm and rhyme. If your little one loves, loves, loves all things train, I'd recommend this one to supplement your daily exposure to FREIGHT TRAIN.
Demarest, Chris Train. BOARD BOOK. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1996. $6.99.
A board book for the youngest of readers, this story takes you on a train ride through the country. Cows moo as you pass farms and go over hills, and eventually make your way back home.
I enjoyed this board book for its simplicity with a rhyming text and very plain but colorful illustrations. However, there is nothing unique or surprising in this book, overall. Its called "Train" and a stereotypical train ride with nothing out of the ordinary trope is what you are going to get. Like its companion book, "Bus," this is a good choice for parents reading to their babies--the color palette and minimal text make it a good choice for this purpose. I just liked "Bus" a little better.
A comforting board book with sparse rhyming text that shows a girl riding a train home. Train loving toddlers will especially appreciate the train's journey chugging through the countryside. Pair with Donald Crew's Freight Train.
