For Kenna Carter, life is simple. Kill the monsters, close the breaches, collect a pay-check and keep her secret safe...until fate decides to be a bitch...
Kenna Carter is one of the chosen. Branded by fate as Fearless, she and her companions patrol the night and keep the city of Lindrealm free from otherworld denizens. Any pocket of darkness, any nook or cranny can spawn a breach, allowing hungry monsters from the Evernight to come crawling though. A reluctant treaty with Erebus and his clan of dark djinn offers protection from the worst of the monsters, and maintains the balance needed to keep Lindrealm safe. But fate has other plans for Kenna.
One night, one mission, and her life is thrown off course.
Broken and filled with despair, Kenna finds herself in Erebus’s world, a place of eternal darkness and enchantments. A prisoner or a guest, she isn’t quite sure, but with the help of a guardian angel and a talking gargoyle she hopes to find out just where she fits in the grand scheme of things, because Kenna has a secret destiny. One that she is about to discover could require the ultimate sacrifice. But when the time comes, will Kenna make the right choice?
Debbie Cassidy lives in England, Bedfordshire, with her three kids and very supportive husband. Coffee and chocolate biscuits are her writing fuels of choice, and she is still working on getting that perfect tower of solitude built in her back garden. Obsessed with building new worlds and reading about them, she spends her spare time daydreaming and conversing with the characters in her head. She writes Urban Fantasy, Romance, Fantasy and Reverse Harem Fantasy. All her books contain plenty of action, romance and twisty plots.
Kenna thinks she is one of the Fearless, and that her life is doing pretty good. That is until she gets let down by her best friend, and something horrible happens to her.
Now, she is going to be sent off to die by the man who was supposed to love her. She has a new destiny waiting for her, and she doesn't understand it at all. But she will do whatever she can to protect the innocents, no matter what they are.
This book was really good. I enjoyed the plot line, and the heroine's courage. The only thing I didn't like about it was the bad taste in men the heroine had. That was a little bit heartbreaking, but other than that I really enjoyed this one a whole lot, and I look forward to more!
So it looks like the difference between RH and non RH is a lot of unrequited love, betrayal and broken hearts. It was good but I can see the relationships are going to annoy me. Fast paced and at times did feel like beauty and the beast. At the start I didn't like Kenna, Blane or Vanessa. Then I just felt sorry for her. Favourite characters were Baal and the gargoyle. I didn't like how she treated the angel.
Good story, there's a lot of action - fast paced (reminiscent of a tv series like Heroes in that way - at least what I remember from that show). At first I was annoyed it seemed to be a very similar formula (too similar) to her "Nightwatch Academy" series - gay best friend, gate to another world that needs protecting and the heroine is on the team that will protect humanity from the "monstrous hordes on the other side", only certain people can pass through the gate, heroine finds out - surprise! She's not human and is in fact ...
(very slight spoiler alert here... But it's not a spoiler if you've read any of Cassidy's other books, it's literally found in every Cassidy series heroine...)
She's, gasp! a mix of non-human genes - who would have thunk it?...and is singularly needed to save the world/situation/humanity, etc.
End of slight spoiler...
Aside from the formula - that can get annoying (also formulaic: the heroines are all strong, a bit too fearless (IMHO), resilient and stubbornly think they don't need help in overwhelming odds... I will say, they're not carbon cutouts of each other, but still. It's as if they were cloned in the same lab and put into different cultures and environments.) Those are the lowlights.. [oh, and while there have been no sex scenes thus far, if the formula holds, they won't be cringey, but they won't be steamy/sexy either. They just are. I don't think she's particularly good at it, some authors can make you feel as if you need a cigarette after, or blood pressure meds 😁, hers are just.. There. But this book was clean.]
That said, there's a reason I gave it 4 stars. The highlights are, the storyline. Cassidy is fantastic at crafting interesting scenarios and making them come to life through her writing. There's no stilted dialogue or plotlines. She doesn't have male characters speak as if they were written by teenaged girls or scripted by soap opera writers. If she just made the heroines more individualistic, not so formulaic, I would have rated it higher.
The last several books I've read have been mediocre at best;so, it is such a pleasure when I stumbled upon "Beyond Everlight." This read is gritty, chocked full of fantasy, interesting characters and betrayals at every turn. Yum, just what the doctor ordered.
Kenna Carter is a Fearless, a magical enforcement agent. Because of her job she is able to keep her mother and sister Bella in a comfortable style and with a comfortable life. Every year there is a lottery where several citizen are sacrificed to go to the Evernight as a tithe for the Djinn overlord, Erebus. No one returns. As Jenna maneuvers through the streets of the city she and her partner close breaches in the realm and fight off demons. They are good at what they do and it doesn't hurt that Kenna is having an affair with her boss, Blane.
Then, when a demon horde attacks, leaving Kenna's two partners dead and her faced with the choice of cutting off her leg in order to live, Kenna's life is about to change forever. As she recovers from the amputation and self pity, she has no contact with her mother, sister or Blane. Then she discovers Blame has betrayed her in the worse possible way (No. I won't reveal how). Jenna is sent to Eveenight as a tithe for Erebus.
Once Kenna is in the new realm she makes friends with a gargoyle and pissing off some of Erebus' Djinn friends. Is she a guest or a prisoner. Only time will tell. Yet, in the midst of all of this craziness, Jenna has her own secret she bares and it just might get her killed.
I really enjoyed this read. Jenna is a kickass heroine with real grit and backbone. I also enjoyed the siren and gargoyle as well. The plot was solid and the betrayals just kept coming. It was hard for me to figure out who I really wanted Jenna to be paired up with but I am sure book two will set me straight. Yep. That's right. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series! This is one you definitely want to put on your to read list.
Dang! I’m torn with this book. It was really hard to sink onto. I’ve read several of this authors books and no matter which series I try I can’t seem to find the beginning. Where the heck does it start so I can go back there to find out details on how these worlds ended up here. Tho there is a very brief and vague summary its just not enough for me. It’s hard for me to really get into a book if the backstory is not given fully because my book OCD takes every plot hole and runs with it and stresses over the questions.
Kenna our FMC is a like able character but kind of flighty. She doesn’t make decisions and stick to her guns well and she seems to fall for any guy giving her attention at a given moment. Love Lauren and am disappointed after all that she goes for Baal. Wth. Here is a guy who has devoted his life to her and she goes for the slimey backstabby Baal! Grrr.
The story concept was good even if complex with multiple supernatural species and worlds enter dependent on each other. We start with Kenna as a “human” with no mark duplicating her future. Her mother goes to Lauren who places the mark of Fearless on her with a magic quill having to refresh it every so often. Kenna has a secret second sight that allows her to see the monsters and magic. Kenna loves her life as fearless and lives saving humanity. Due to an unfortunate encounter she ends up crippled and depressed. Through backstabbing and receipt she ends up as part of the tithe (tribute is all I could think) to be sent to the dark djinn as payment for their protection of humanity. I wouldn’t say it was an epic adventure but a lot happens and Kenna just really gets played.
After it’s all said and done I’m curious enough to read the next book but I don’t feel a burning need to find out what happens to the characters. So yea 3 stars.
KU 4.5 stars This novel crafted an excellent new world of differing realms. The realm of humans, Lindrealm; the realm of djinn and the hoard, Evernight; and Twilight, steeped in unrest and a danger to them all. Kenna, a Fearless warrior of the human realm suddenly discovers all is not what it seems and as her life becomes embroiled in tragedy and destiny she realises she is only at the beginning of something larger than life.
A stunning adventure for the ultimate journey to escape from your own reality.
This is the kind of book I love to pick up when I'm in the mood for effortless entertainment. It's a fast-paced read with plenty of excitement alongside the disastrous, frustrating relationships that keep those pages turning. I finished it and immediately ordered the second book in the series because I want to know what happens next. The kindle version could have done with more editing; there are words missing, incorrect words here and there and the wrong guy is named at one point. There is an inconsistency too; the tithe can't be removed from the dream pool because it will kill them instantly (we are told this about Danny) then one of the tithe survives being woken to be abused....?! I'm still looking forward to starting book 2.

Action packed from the get go, and with twists and turns that kept my attention til the end.
Wow, Action packed from beginning to end, Beyond Everlight had me on the selfie wondering what was going to happen next. The female lead is such a strong character, I am rooting for her 100%. Don’t know yet who I want her ended up with. Heading to download book two now!
You can find the prequel on her website for free so it’s not unobtainable.
The beginning was so slow that I became frustrated. That frustration was directly related to the FMC and her superior attitude to anyone who wasn’t human. She displayed all the characteristics of a bigot and that made her difficult to connect with or even like.
A lot of what I want to rate the book on I cannot state without ruining the story. The male cast is interesting sadly the two I connected to the most I’m afraid won’t be potentials through the remainder of the story which I kind of hope I’m wrong but now I’m cautious on getting attached to any of them because things are very misleading when it comes to her connections.
The prequel didn’t help me like her but it served to better understand her as a character. So I feel it’s sort of important to read through first. The book itself starts out very slowly almost too slowly because I found myself losing interest very quickly and even read a couple of books then came back to it. Which is why I had trouble rating. However, when I came back to it the book picked up and things were slowly coming together to paint a very compelling picture. I ended up rather enjoying and appreciating the story by the end.
There are some errors and at times I found myself forced to adjust the sentence I was reading which is distracting as avid readers know. For this reason it did lose a star but it isn’t cause to not read it at all.
I got this short story for free via Instafreebie when I signed up to Debbie Cassidy's newsletter.
What we learn as we read this story is that the characters are teens - they're cadets at a school that trains those born with the "Fearless" mark to become hunters and protectors of mankind. The story is told in the first person from our main character, Kenna Carter's point of view, who has a big secret of her own.
I've got to say, this story is why I steer clear of the YA genre; I was fighting my prejudice of the genre and frustration with the characters and plot throughout. I think I actually tutted out loud when our heroine jumped to a blatantly incorrect conclusion fairly early on. *sigh*
Right from the first page, this story feels as though we've been thrown into an existing plot line in an unfamiliar new fantasy world; a flash fiction piece for existing fans rather than a taster to entice you to the series. Debbie Cassidy is a new-to-me- author and although I found this, OK, a quick read it wasn't complex enough to intrigue me enough to pursue the series.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I loved reading this book and watching Kenna grow and become all she needed to be.
The characters seemed real and memorable, and I really felt the connection to Kenna and her sister. The other characters, like Erebus and Lauren, also made a big impression. Wow. Great world building and future story potential. I wish the next one was available so I didn't have to wait.
This was a complete, well thought out story with a solid conclusion but also leads us into Kenna's next phase.
I received this complimentary ARC and chose to leave an honest review.
This book was a super read... I loved reading about Kenna's story... Her fight to save her family, home and friends. Kenna is on the special force squad that protects her world from the monsters that roam her world. There are lots of twists and turns that will make your head spinning and a few surprises that keep you wondering. You will read about the exciting adventure that Kenna goes on and the cool place that she goes to... along with the a few awesome friends that she makes. If you love the supernatural world you will love reading Beyond Everlight I did and loved it
Let me be stuck on the Blame situation for minute. HELL NO. Kenna didn't address that to my liking!!! Ha! I would have murdered that dude. Then figured out how to send the wife and kid to the pool of souls. Smh!! Maybe my moral compass is askew? Whatever but he got off light.
Such a good read. Bravo. I love this world building and the characters (most of them). I'm wondering if other books by this author are as engaging. If so I may check them out. Can't wait for book two.
After a slow start, I started to enjoy this story about Jenna who was in law enforcement. In order to keep The Horde at bay and the dark side behind closed gates, people were required to be sacrificed in a yearly basis. They were chosen by random and then taken by to the darkside. The main djin had bound his soul to the fire and that fired kept The Hord from escaping into the human area. The sacrificed people's souls fuelled the main djin.
But, someone's name is on this year's sacrificial rota who might just change everything.
A story that starts out differently from how it ends. But, you already knew that, most stories do. The journey isn't especially moving, but the final piece of the story when it's done certainly is. I've never read anything by this author, and while I've not say I've found a new favorite author, I've certainly found an author I'll watch for books from. I kind of like where this book ended in the storyline, so reading more may ruin the tale for me, but we'll see. If you're a fantasy fan, this story should be a good one for you.
I’ve read two other series by this incredibly gifted author (they were dope af), but this one missed the mark for me.
Perhaps it’s the realness of the world the story takes place in; the losses seem to pile up far more than the wins.
I don’t know if this will change as the story progresses, but I know it would’ve changed things for me had there been a real love connection for the fmc in this book.
Even with all that said, the story is so creative and unique, I couldn’t hate it…but I won’t be reading the rest of this series.
This is a fun book. Kenna Carter is a wonderful kick-a** heroine and it's a pleasure watching her take on everything as she moves from chosen elite Fearless guardian of Lindrealm fighting the monsters who emerge from the Evernight, to "guest" of Erebus and his clan of dark djinn, and beyond. Action, adventure, twists and turns, this plot had it all, along with a very well crafted set of characters. A ton of fun to read, this book is highly recommended.
It was an alright read. The main heroine had an attitude I liked but all the secondary characters sucked. I do not even want to get started on her fucked up love life either. Everytime I read about a new male and their betrayl, I was sitting here like where the hell are these men's balls and values?? Oh well the book was interesting enough to finish, but I do not think I will be reading the rest of the series.
I’m surprised this isn’t getting more traffic in the fantasy world. It’s a fun and exciting book! The worlds are really creative and I love Kenna! I wish it was less YA but I really enjoyed it. All of the characters are interesting and there was a lot left open for the next book. What was that basically let go of Blaine? He needed a boot in the a$$! Hope we get something in the next book.
This is the first book in a new series that tells the story of the fae in a different way. Seems that due to an accident by scientists our realm was joined to other realms, including the fae, and one of those realms is filled with monsters that want to kill all humans. The world building is first rate and the character development is excellent. The story is exciting and fun to read.
Unfortunately, the end of the series is a bit rushed and I'm left with a lot of questions at the end.
Still, it's a good, relaxing series. The characters are fun and easy to like, even fall for (if only I had more books!). All in all, a really good, weekend-type of series. Short books and packed with action. Worth a try.
Well done. This new series is awesome. A young woman who dedicates her life to the protection of others and does so with unbelievable enthusiasm and strength. Kenna is amazing and her partner Brett is a wonderful side kick. There are so many twists and turns along with so many surprises that the reader is totally engrossed. Well written and highly enjoyable work. Debbie has done it again. Highly recommend!
Strong FMC, with lots of fearlessness and true care for those around her. However, she should just say screw her ex and his baby momma. Once that baby is born, she should go back and just kill both of them, IMO…
Disappointed because this was set up to be a wonderful RH… I mean I can think of 4 guys who’d have fit in her harem perfectly. Disappointing, really.
Beyond Everlight, written by Debbie Cassidy, is the first book in her Fearless Destiny series. This is also the first book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last. From the world building to the interesting characters, the story had me hooked from the first page to the last. This book has adventure, action, mysteries, danger, heartbreak, friendship, family and love. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Solid five stars for Ms. Debbie Cassidy. The characters are an intriguing group with surprising twists as to how each continues to build on the storyline and the relationship with the heroine. I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment. October 26 cannot come fast enough.
A very interesting story. It captures your imagination and you do not know where you will end up. A young girl is a fighter of a world gone wrong but there is more to her story that you find out at the end. Jenna fights for humanity against the darkness until she is betrayed.
