The crew of Persephone only has 300 days to find help for the planet of Uraniel. They return to Queen’s Hat Station with hopes of recruiting more people for their ship, or finding any leads about the super-powered aliens threatening the galaxy.
But Elaka Nota is waiting for them on Queen’s Hat, and the conflict sets the crew of Persephone on a path that will change their friendship forever.
This was a fast paced book, but not very inspiring. I am disappointed at the same mistakes Adam makes, also why the Android couldn't fight this time. Adam is an idiot in every sense. I am Done with this series.
OMG! This book is so fast paced and exciting! And it leaves off in a cliff-hanger and what a cliff-hanger! I'm so lucky, as one of the beta-editors, I'll get to read the next one before any of you! Ok, back to this nail-biter of a book: Our crew returns to the Queen's Hat Station, but guess who else arrives? Elaka Nota and they want their starship back! The ensuing fight puts Adam and the girls on a course that leads to disaster. The girls end up being taken to be sold as slaves and Adam, who is badly injured ends up at space station that was attacked. He manages to save the group of people on this space station, but he also ends up married to the Princess of the Vaish Clan. Now if he can only survive the ensuing meeting with her father and the trials that will follow!
Getting kind of annoying the Star Justice series started out as a full throttle action movie in print. Over the last two books MSE has started taking a malicious delight in antagonizing the reader with relationship bullshit. This could be a fine break from the shoot em' up action if the relationship bullshit were occasional and light. It is not. It is incessant, out of place, and aggravating. The cross girl bickering, tiresome sexual innuendos, and whoopsie-dasiy damsel in distress shtick is not a side dish, but served up as the main course. Once again we have the crew of the Persephone walking into a trap, saying this feels like a trap and then it being a trap. I do not like the new direction this series is taking. If this persists in future books I will drop these books as one more source of frustration that I don't need in my life.
He and his team went to find the details from a planet and found out how he was made there.
He and his team went to another planet to get food and resources but they were denied entry, So they secretly landed and got attacked by the people who kidnaped his whole crew and sold them to slavers.
now he is alone and goes looking for them and was end up in a contract which turns out to be a marriage contract, and they will help him find his crew.
Unlike the previous books, this one left several plots in the middle rather than even finishing one. While it was a decent read, I was annoyed with the ending and the constant, fast pace near the end - after they go bull hunting until the end.
In an earlier review of this series I wrote that "Of the books I have read about space weretiger men this is without a doubt among the best." In the spirit of that same line of reasoning, I regret to say that this book is among the worst I have read about space weretiger men. And it really is.
The reason I'm giving it 2-stars, instead of 1-star it arguably deserves, is because it's not all bad Just very flawed on a lot of levels.
The rough edges become apparent early on. When various character voices didn't come off quite right. Character that didn't swear much before started swearing a lot. Attitudes and speech patterns in general just seem off at times, giving the impression that Mr. Earle just wasn't able to devote as much time or care writing it.
Then things leveled off a bit and the space adventure starts happening and for about half of the book it seemed like maybe everything would be ok. Unfortunately, after that point the plot just falls apart. It doesn't make a lot of sense. It's not fun. It adds attempts at macho bullshit that conflicts with the sense of urgency it was the trying to establish. There is an actual line that says...
"I don't have time for bullshit, I'm going to take another break. I'll talk to you when I feel like it again."
Now this is a goofy book about a weretiger spacemarine so I'm willing to cut it a lot of slack but that shit doesn't even make sense. You may think that line is better in context. It's not. It's actually worse in context. The whole tail end of the book is like that. It's just not very well thought out. Unless the intent was to make them MC seem like he was a manchild with an IQ of about 40 who doesn't even understand the concept of urgency.
What saves this from getting a 1-star is the ideas themselves aren't all bad (Hurray for space Nords!). It's just that those ideas aren't put together or executed well. There is also a cliffhanger which is so crudely done it would be insulting except that your really going to want the book to be over by that point.
So it's bad but I'll still buy the next one in the hopes that it's better than this was. Or at least more fun.
This book is bad, bad in so many ways that it's hard to remember them all.
TL:DR If you enjoy stories where the major characters essentially act in an incredibly moronic manner, but still somehow end up surviving while most of the people they are trying to help end up dead, this could be just the series for you. Otherwise don't dignify this lazy trash with your money.
I likes the first book of this series as a fairly straightforward, no effort, easy read adventure that kept moving at a reasonable pace. Now however it has been bogged down in pointless isde plots that take more time and space than the main plot. It is clear that Earle has run out of any ideas he started with.
My first draft of this review was written just after I finished and was quite angry about how little effort Earle put into this book, so I started again.
Major problems include the raft of contradictions when Earle ignores facts he has previously established in the interest of shoehorning another implausible plot fix into the story.
Adam was initially established in book one as an incredibly capable soldier of special forces standard with the additional benefits of genetic engineering to improve his strength, speed etc. In this book, all this skill and training is thrown away, along with basic mental reasoning to allow him to made the stupid decisions necessary to enable this turgid sub-plot. Others, like Eve apparently just outright lose their abilities at convenient moments to allow this ill conceived story to even start.
Apart from these frankly lazy plot fixes, it is getting really boring how in the absence of actual story progression, the central characters are just getting slapped in the face with Murphy's Law time and time again. By which I mean almost every sub plot is basically enabled by really bad luck, because Michael-Scott Earle is incapable of thinking up a real reason?
Passable military SF with little military knowledge
Obviously, I like these books well enough to have read five of them. They have an interesting cast and enough story for me to get into.
However, there are some major problems that I have with the writing.
1. There should be sexual tension here, but I'm not feeling it. 2. They are flying on a starvation diet because nobody stops for 10 minutes in a supermarket. 3. The writer has used the word "transponder" everywhere he should have used "transceiver." This has cost the series a star because it is so jarring to me. 4. In various places in official ship listings speed is sometimes listed as distance per time and often in the next line the reverse. People don't do that.
If you want a story where a single were-tiger and his harem save the universe, this is OK.
This is almost the definition of filler. I especially like how the entire crew went from "presumed having a brain" to "let's not have any perimeter defense"... Drones, psychic vampires, sense of smell and hearing, and NONE of it was used or remembered because it was ever so much fun butchering cows in the sun.
As for the ending. Why is this MC too such a weak little tool? So the Prime enslaved you by using idiot space-magic to entangle your emotions. That seems like the literal definition of good reason to murder the fuck outta her and all that follows her. Just start in on a good murder-spree, and then don't stop till it gets boring writing the book. Neutering the MC was NOT the way to go.
It's pretty obvious that this book has some very strong diverging opinions. Overall the book is actually an entertaining read if you liked the previous books, but there are two big detractors:
1. The main character has an "I'm an idiot"-scene. In the second half of the book, Adam goes through a series of events where time seems to be a major factor. There's a lot at stake and he has to be very quick. And yet, all of a sudden, he begins to waste hours and days doing nothing, as if he wasn't in a hurry. The problem is a flawed portrayal of character motivation and drive. Logically, at that point in time the "hurry" part has passed and Adam actually has to get help and information to tackle the problem. Yet the book fails to depict that, sending a very ambigious message of "he still has to hurry, he has no time for playing games!" while playing games. This was badly handled and you need to logically realize that the urgency is no longer really as present even though the book communicates that it both is and isn't, if you want to be able to get past that nonsense.
2. The second problem is that there are two plotlines, A and B. Half the book, A happens, then suddenly we follow plotline B. Neither gets resolved, leaving the reader unsatisfied and feeling cheated out of a story. As a writer, one of the things to consider is what goes into a book? Where do I start, where do I end it? Usually the end is when the primary themes of the book have been concluded. There may still be potential for a sequel or something new may start, but the primary plot at the center of the novel has been finished. This isn't the case here. Neither A nor B are concluded and the reader feels as if he got half a book. It's still an enjoyable half (except for the problem above) but it feels as if you bought Burning Bright part 1 instead of a full novel and the relatively short page count doesn't help either.
I'm still interested to see how it's going to continue, but for the last 60 pages I've been eyeing the page count and wondering how on earth he wants to bring it to a conclusion, and the lack of one--despite a new plotline that I think is interesting with characters that could really add to the story and the composition of the crew--left me feeling unsatisfied.
Ultimately I'd give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked it, but it has two major problems. If you haven't read it, it's probably better to wait for "Burning Bright part 2" to be released, so you can read both as one.
I ripped through this book fast. I see why some are screaming at the cliff hanger - but I love it. Great suspense and an awesome way to leave us hanging wondering what is going to happen in the next book.
Excellent compared to the previous books, which I feel were more of a set up to this book. A bit more action in this book, and we get to see that despite Adam being a badass there is always something that is bigger and badder than you.
We see that even Adam has his weaknesses and we learn a little more about his tiger man alternate. Every time I think of tiger man I think of the cheesy Gil Gerard Buck Rogers villain who served Princess Ardala played by the beautiful Pamela Hensley.
Lots of action in this book, and finally Adam gets laid. After reading the Destroyer and Rockstar Romance series, I expected the sex to be much more graphic than what was written. I like how the author gave enough clues about what happened and let the readers decide how much kink they wanted to interject into the relationship.
I hope that Adam manages to get his ladies back. I was hoping that Juliette would become the 5th woman on the ship. It appears though that Juliette just wanted fun in the sack and not a relationship. Unless Juliette changes her mind, I don't see her joining Adam's crew.
Now with Adam married to a Viking harridan, it should be interesting inter-relationship dynamics if Adam gets his ladies back. If this is the last we have seen of Eve, Zea and the twins - I will be very pissed at the author.
It will be interesting to see how Zea and Eve take the fact that Adam is now married to a huge Viking harpy since their relationship was still so new. I wonder how Zea will take it due to her shitty experience with men before Adam. I think Eve will roll with Adam's marriage as she can read Adam's mind and know his intentions and feelings. Zea however, may view Adam's marriage as a betrayal no matter his good intentions for doing so.

I'm getting this strange feeling, that M-S E is unable to actually write a good series. The character interactions are tiring, supposedly funny parts aren't funny, and once again, the plot is only moved by chance encounters, and by conveniently forgetting about the established rules of the world.
What could be more logical, than the android being effected by a sleep dart? Or the mind reading witch suddenly being unable to detect incoming (biological) threats? Maybe the veteran marine, who forgets to establish a defense, before he sticks his head up a dead bulls ass? The previously paranoid (and often betrayed) crew all saying "Yay! Everyone inherently hates strangers here! There's a minor death star arriving here shortly, full of slavers! Surely, we are finally safe in this paradise of a land! Why would we need to have someone on guard duty!"?
Also, android girl CAN multitask, you know. She could just go around, doing her thing, while surveiling the area with 3 drones. She already controlled 6 drones at once, so she SHOULD be able to split her attention. But then how would we move forward with the story? By reading books from a competent writer, who doesn't have to use coincidence every time he wants something to happen.
I already read (and gave up on) M-S E's Destroyer series, so I should've known better.
I literally don’t know what to say. Adam went hunting let his guard down made the dumbest mistake EV-ER.. and found on accident the crew he was looking for that docked at the Queen’s Hat 15 yrs prior while loosing all his women... to a primitive tribe..with blow darts. Seriously a primitive tribe with handmade weapons and blow darts..and now he is in way over his head with some Clan of Prime Valkyrie... Odin? Valhalla? What happened? I thought nasty parasites were gonna eat everyone in 300 Days...
Ps I am still kinda laughing at what Adam did to himself when he awakened from 36 blow darts sticking out of him trying to rescue the women.. funny stupid I can’t believe he did that..probably Epic in terms of storyline because I’ve never heard of a character doing that to themselves...and surviving no less. I was picturing this in my head and while bloody and gross and quite painful still it was epic. Like Spider Pig from the Simpsons Kinda...
Poor Adam! He definitely falls short of the ladies in his crew! Here they are on a dangerous planet but he gives in to the twins request to stay out in the sunshine to work. Now, having been a marine you'd think that he'd have a watch out just in case, but no ....... So, what happens, the girls get taken and he has only a name to go on. Having no idea how to pilot or navigate in space, he has to rely on Persephone to help him. This with injuries that would have put anyone else in sickbay for at least a week or more. But Adam prevails. The only problem is that he wants to go back to Queen's Hat station but the next stop is already set up and its not to the station. All of a sudden there's a whole new player in the game. The biggest problem with this story is that it stops halfway through. That lost it a point straight away!
Adam and I concur on what to do with the slavers that took his harem. Adam fights under the influence of drugs and the loss of his hands and just misses boarding the slavers's ship. In trying to get back to Queen's Hat space station hoping that the girls would escape and meet him there, Adam ends up in a much different location. He ends up rescuing a crew on the remnants of a space station. Much to his chagrin he ends up accepting the submission of the Princess of the Vaish Clan not knowing this meant marriage. Will Adam get Madalena to use the Vaish navy in intimidating the Magate Order of slavers into releasing his friends? Will the Vaish help him fight the super vampires? I look forward to another book.
This book, number 5 in the series, is definitely starting to show some of the common misfortunes of long running series. It is towards the end of the book that this truly becomes apparent, and it ends on a cliffhanger that hints at the next book being completely different from the rest.
While I categorized this change as a ‘common misfortune’ just a second ago, I’m not sure this entirely a bad change. That said, it definitely feels like Earle ran out of ideas on the main plot so he decided to change it up. Or maybe he needed certain elements that have been a long time coming (I.e. a crew for Persephone), and this was the easiest way to get them.
In any case, not Michael-Scott Earle’s best work in my opinion, but entertaining as always.
I agree with some of your other fans, the book is very entertaining, but not quite put together well. There are two plot lines. The first one should have continued along that plot line. The second one should be the beginning of the next book (Star Justice #6). Then in the second plot line which continues in (Star Justice #6), should actually be the beginning of that book. Ok, I'm explaining it and now I'm confused. It just didn't work right.
This great space opera is the fifth volume in this wonderful series (IIRC). It is definitely an adult space opera! (EE Smith was never like this!) This book (and the entire series) is imaginative, unusual, as we follow the adventures of a Marine involuntarily changed into a WereTiger and his loves, a Vampire, a hacker, a programmer and an android. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AS BOTH AN INDIVIDUAL BOOK AND AS A SERIES
I got two thirds of the way through this book and I was so annoyed and frustrated I have just given up on this series. I have put up with the author’s need to have women lusting after his hero, the enigma of Persephone that has dragged on and on, but I am so fed up of reading stories that are basically one disaster after another. In this book it seems that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I don’t mind the occasional disaster, but this was just non stop.
There isn't much time to rest in the action packed Burning Bright. Adam, the tiger shifter, and his friends face new enemies and challenges in intense scenes that make this book difficult to set down.
This book is part of a series, and I'd highly recommend starting with the first book. The ending will leave you eager for the next installment.
Contains graphic violence.
I received a free ARC of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I will wait for the rest of the book to pass final judgement.
I have enjoyed this series up to now but find the kind of cliffhanger this ended on unacceptable. Finish the story segment or announce you are doing a chapter serial. This is a an excellent example of bad indie publishing.
Burning Bright is so good, I liked it even better than the first four books in the Star Justice series. The Characters have been fleshed out even more, Anyways, Adam continues to be a total badass super soldier. But now he will have to put all of his skill and training (plus his tiger side) to rescues his crew members from slavers.
Another awesome story with great action and wonderful characters. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Would recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a great space opera.
Not a big fan of adding extra plot lines before getting close to wrapping up current one. Also the addition of extra characters didn't seem needed. Will get the next one to see where we go. Hope things get back on track
As I have come to expect from Adam and the crew, plenty of action and bloody adventure again in this book - love those exploding heads! Some nice plot twists as well, and I can't wait to read more about Adam's new wife!
With all due respect to the earlier stories, this blows away all those previous. If you have enjoyed the earlier stories, I think you will LOVE this one. Belongs cliffhanger at the end, as usual!!!
