Finnegan & Morrow #1

Going Sasquatch

Rate this book
Lovestruck lapdogs, lazy Instagrammers and calcium deposits in the pool – Hollywood personal trainer Sean ‘Finn’ Finnegan is having one hell of a week, not helped when the much-feared agent Angie Lorde calls to demand if he knows why her hottest property – winsome superhero star Chase Morrow – has suddenly ‘gone sasquatch’ and apparently disappeared off the face of the earth.

Out of concern (and maybe a little unrequited love, let’s be honest) Finn goes searching for Chase, but this leads to a day so bad that when he does catch up with his crush, they both agree that the best solution to their very Hollywood problems would be to take off, head up into the Bigfoot country of Northern California and – like America’s favorite cryptid – pretend not to exist for a while.

When Finn and Chase discover that their long-attraction is entirely mutual, they also discover that going off the grid is not that easy in the 21st century. Especially if you’re an A-lister.

Adorable.

What're y'all h8rs on about? It is what it is. A romance about what should be easy but gets made hard for gay guys. Falling in love and deciding to do it right has to be political because stupid people care a lot more than they should about what others do in private.

So buy, read, enjoy if what u want is a little happiness-conquers-all wish fulfillment with some Hollywood trim and a few hot sex scenes.

Jeez, let me rant about this story a little, because it sure confused me.

Hollywood superstar Chase Morrow, best known for showing off his muscled body in spandex in the latest superhero saga, has gone missing.

Fitness trainer Sean Finnegan, who works with many stars and counts Chase among one of his clients, has other issues right now, as his current Instagram starlet client is throwing up in his studio while the girl’s insane terrier is doing nasty things to Sean’s assistant’s little Pomeranian. It’s just not Sean’s day.

Chase’s agent calls Sean, though and asks him to look for her star, so Sean drives to the guy's estate – and finds himself in hospital after getting electrocuted touching Chase’s fence.
In any case, after a series of funny and painful events, Sean does find Chase who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and asks Sean to leave town with him for a much needed vacation from Hollywood.

So Sean takes him to the north of California where Sean’s family lives – in an area known for bigfoot sightings! They check into a hotel, claiming to be newlywed bigfoot lovers who are out to get a glimpse of the real thing.

The humor in this is really quirky and cute, although the political references were a bit over the top. I mean, mentioning ‘the orange guy from The Apprentice who is now president’ on every other page really isn’t necessary, no matter how much you dislike him.

And having a gay Hollywood star pretending to be straight in order not to anger the Russian and Chinese markets, sounds a bit questionable too.

Most of the time I had no idea where the story was going and frankly, by the end I realized that the whole thing was just plain boring instead of exciting and sexy.

Chase started off as a mysterious hunky Hollywood star in need of a hug and turned into a nerdy geek with glasses who giggled like a school girl and wanted to have sex and even more sex until Sean had to pull the brakes to give his anatomy some much needed rest.

And Sean (whose first person POV we're following through the story) is just not a very likable guy.

The conflict in the story was absolutely ridiculous too. Both guys thought the other was straight. For 8 months. Yeah, right…

And once they consider themselves a couple they cannot be together because of Putin’s heterosexual agenda?!

WTF.

Unfortunately, this disappointed me quite thoroughly. Let’s not even go to the fact that their (constant) sex was not only over the top but also a bit disgusting in parts. Or maybe that’s just me reading romances on Sunday mornings before breakfast.

In any case, I hope my next books will not have references to Donald Trump’s twitter habits while being on the toilet. Thank you very much!

2 stars!

Adorable.

That's what this was. Just flat out adorable. Full of hilarious banter, silly shenanigans, and sweet, sweet loving, this little tale was a great read. I'm pretty sure I will be gobbling up all this author's work now.

Going Sasquatch was deee-lite-ful. It put a groove in my heart. Okay, I'll stop.

I am bewildered that more people haven't read this, and I am encouraging more people to read this. Going Sasquatch was a wickedly funny, sexy, sweet, highly entertaining tale about Chase, a reluctant movie star, and Finn, the personal trainer who falls for the man behind the picture perfect persona.

The book was a bit heavy on dialogue at times, and I would have liked more of Chase’s perspective. But the characters were fleshed out and their connection felt tangible. Throw in utterly hilarious hijinks involving the Sasquatch of lore, celebrity culture (especially poking fun at it), a few rants against Jabba the Trump, and I was hooked.

Finally, Dlisted shout-outs for the win! Does Jess Whitecroft hang on the D? Because the smart snark found in Going Sasquatch would be right at home there...

Again, this was really and truly delightful, and I hope that more people really and truly consider reading it.

I'm assuming for a short time, and as of Sept 2nd, this book is free on Amazon
I do not know who the hell Jess Whitecoft is, but I do know they deserve a huge readership. These Violent Delights is one of my favourite books of 2017 and this is every bit as good, and probably even more enjoyable for most MM romance readers because it's a very sexy satirical contemporary romance, complete with an epilogue and a HEA.

Hey, if you can make sasquatch that little bit crazier, give me a peek into Hollywood, including the bitchy and the interesting, give me a reminder of some memorable info about Marilyn Monroe, and include Peg Entwistle and the Hollywood sign, Edith Piaf, and slap Trump and his tweets around and snark out the US election, all while two guys fall in love, I'm in total awe.

I am not a fan of movie star books but this appealed to me. I think it was the promise of the humor.

Whoever promised me the laughs came through tenfold. This was funny. I mean, laugh out loud can’t keep a smile off your face while reading funny.

It was also sexy as Hell.

And sweet.

I pretty much enjoyed the fuck out of it.

One thing though. I normally try to stay away from mentioning editing or errors in my reviews but I can’t let it go for this book. It was kind of bad. There were so many missing words from sentences I’d get pulled a little out of the story in order to re-read the sentence. I’d say it happens but I kind of don’t know how it does.

I still really enjoyed the book. Just thought it was worth a mention since it should be an easy fix.

Now I need to go check out the authors other books.

My first celebrity romance!*

This was so fun, y'all. Loved the narrative voice, spot-on humor, excellent pacing, believable relationship development, super-hot, fairly low angst, and a very satisfying resolution to the inevitable third-act crisis. The writing was confident and assured and a real pleasure to read. Nothing particularly new here, but what is here is done extremely well.

Rounding down instead of up because of some sloppy editing (missed words and the like) that were extra unfortunate in the context of an otherwise so well-written book.

Also note -- for those who don't like politics in their romance: this was written and set in 2017, and there are (negative, thankfully) references to the 2016 US election, Trump, and anti-LGBTQIA+ policies and backlash. By no means central, but it does come up conversationally, including in a particularly important exchange towards the end.

But a fast, fun read that left me grinning. I'll definitely seek out more Jess Whitecroft -- and thanks to X for putting her on my radar!

NOTE -- At the time of posting (19 April 2023), this book is free on Amazon and possibly other vendors!

* Unless Red, White and Royal Blue counts as a celebrity romance. Which -- surely not, right? I mean, both whatshisname and whatshisname are celebrities in a sense, but they are famous by proximity/ familial circumstance, not famous by profession. And if "famous" is the bar for celebrity romance, then a lot of sports romances would be de facto celebrity romances and WHY ARE WE LETTING CATEGORIES DIVIDE US???

I enjoyed it and it was a bit above average = 3.5*
(but if it were a truly skookum read I would have given it a 4 or 5)*

The description seemed decent but I really liked the cover. Having read the book I think it is quite fitting as to me it implies both closeness and relaxation. Through a brief set of events Hollywood trainer Sean finds himself travelling to Sasquatch country with movie star Chase. These 2 decide to ignore their phones and their troubles in LA and have an honest to goodness vacation. Nothing works out quite like they plan though.

Sean is crushing pretty hard on chase but making a valiant effort to be the friend Chase needs. Sean and Chase also disagree about the possible existence of big Foot. Sean is a "hard skeptic" although curiously he knows an incredible amount of the lore. During their time away Sean has to worry about his family and staff figuring out what he is doing, while Chase has to worry he will be recognized. Of course eventually they need to go back and face the world.

Told almost entirely from Sean's POV I found this to be a sweet easy read. A little bit more sex than I like but well within normal for this type of book. I agreed with most of Sean's political outlook I did find it a bit preachy at times. I suspect people who really disagree with Sean won't find themselves accidentally reading this tale, so I am not sure what the value of the sermon was. Other than that I find little to whinge about. I look forward to reading more books from this author.

* I was really delighted to see the word skookum used in this book. Although it was only used as a noun. It is a regional english loan word that comes to us from the local first nations and as an adjective is very positive with a meaning of excellent, strong, brave, good ...

A light heart romance where we get a lot of humor and Bigfoot mythology.

The fun of a pretend relationship, embarrassing parents, and crush return with Jess Whitcroft's on point writing is all over this love story.

Chase and Finn like each other. A lot. But neither one even mention it and thinks the other is straight. Chase has a melt down and we are off...

There is some nice thinking about celebrity here amid all the romp but overall this is a feel good romance.

With my oldest getting ready to graduate high school, my middle wrapping up high school soccer and just getting his drivers license, and my youngest just finishing his state cup soccer... real life has been taking up all my free time. The extended time it took me to read this, rather than the usual day or two, was not a reflection on the book just my busy schedule. The story was quirky and fun, it was at times a bit hard to follow, but I could piece it together. Finn and Chase were both good guys, neither perfect, thanks goodness, or overly flawed.

4 awesome stars!

How this author doesn’t have more readers is a mystery. She’s awesome! It’s lighthearted, funny and witty! I adore the crazy shenanigans Finn gets involved in.

The angst level is kinda low. It’s mostly funny and I’ve cracked up laughing multiple times! The storyline isn’t new, it’s hard to do new unless it’s fantasy or sci-if but the Sasquatch cameo was rather refreshing!

I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more from this talented writer 😉

i really liked this! The characters are sweet and fun and more than a little weird, which is perfect for me. I liked the tension between the characters and the sexy scenes. They were sweet, too. Chase got to be himself and Sean was adorable. I giggled at parts and felt my stomach drop a few times.
I was a little bothered there in the beginning with the casual mention of so many celebrities that had died, not that he was callous about it, but it made me cringe just the same.
I will read more from this author, definitely a sweet, fun read.

4.5 well deserved, sexy as hell, laugh-out-loud, bigfoot stars!!!! I enjoyed this book so very much. It came as a total surprise, as this is my first book by the author. I expected a standard, tropey story about a hot Hollywood actor falling for his personal trainer, but this was so much more. Chase is a fleshed out character, so much more to him than his hot body and toothy smile. I really fell in love with him. Finn was also cute as the besotted trainer. Did I mentioned this book is also intensely funny? I can't remember the last time I had so much fun reading a book. All the nods to Bigfoot/Sasquatch/Yeti was good and I loved Finn's parents. I feel sad to subtract half a star, but the editing needs more work.

Now I'm off in search of more Jess Whitecroft books.

Fun first book by a new-to-me author. Recommended to people who like slightly farcial books and/or are fans of Marshall Thornton - not the same but there are plenty of high-jinks but not shallow nevertheless. I giggled a lot and liked the characters. Recommended.

4.5 stars rounded down (primarily due to editing).

You guys. You guys. I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I came across Going Sasquatch, but it is freaking gold. In this book, a physical trainer for the stars and his most famous client have simultaneous mental breakdowns, go to Northern California on a whim, and shenanigans occur - shenanigans involving no less than the likes of Bigfoot. This book is chock-full of humor, uses the miscommunication trope for good and not evil (the inevitable miscommunication at the 80% mark is believable and actually makes sense in the context of the story), and is sexy and heartfelt to boot. The voice of the protagonist is also terrific; Sean has a very different voice than most narrators in the romance genre.

My primary issue with the book is that it needed another round of editing - I noticed a number of grammatical errors, particularly towards the beginning. That being said, this book is a must-read for anyone who likes romances that involve Hollywood; coming out; Sasquatch; humor.

And a quick (long) comment (tirade) because I can't keep my mouth shut: I noticed that a few other reviews discussing their issues with how "political" this book is, critiquing its references to politics circa 2017 and the politics of coming out, particularly for big movie stars. Um, excuse me? Being queer and coming out is inherently and inextricably political. I will cut the rest of my comment because I got a little heated, but needless to say, I find this take to be quite disingenuous.

I have a new favorite author and her name is Jess Whitecroft. This is my second book of hers and Going Sasquatch is just as amazing as my first read of hers (Burn Me), but for different reasons. While Burn Me is heavy and dark, Going Sasquatch is ridiculously hilarious and sweet.

As the title suggests, Bigfoot plays a big role in the plot. The situations the MC and his LI find themselves in are laugh out loud funny. The minor characters introduced throughout are perfect additions to the story.

Finn is a great voice for this story, and Chase is a darling. Oh, and the chemistry between the two...WOWZA. There's a lot of sexy times in this story, but it never felt stale. Usually, for me, when a book has a lot of sex in it, there's much opportunity for repetition and I can get bored easily. Not with this one. Each coupling felt fresh and new, both from my perspective as a reader and as told from the characters' perspectives.

If you're looking for an outrageously silly story with a sweet, hot romance, I highly recommend Going Sasquatch.

New to me author. This is a contemporary mm romance story about Sean a personal trainer and Chase a Hollywood action star. Funny, clever and a real page turner. I enjoyed reading this story and will read more from this author.

Laughing out loud funny

I haven't laugh this hard , as I did while reading this book , in a long time. The uniqueness of the plotline and the hilarious and quirky dialogue kept me giggling like a fool. This was a pure escapism and delicious read. It was a joy of a read.

I really liked the first 2/3 of the book. It was a lot of silly, but rather low-key shenanigans and the characters are pretty cute and just adorable.
But at the end, when it all shortcut through a whole lot of hollywood-level drama, I frankly could not keep track what the fuck their problems with each other even where and I certainly couldn't keep track of how it all came about. So I was just forcing myself through the rest of it until the point where they somehow got their shit together, as I knew they would eventually.

Super hot

Finn and Chase have known each for awhile.
Neither had made a move on the other until a turn of events brings them together.
This little mini-adventure is super sexy and HOT!
It went a bit political which was okay but I avoid that normally when I’m trying to escape into a book. I don’t need real left crashing in... other than that it was a fun read. Loved the characters and eventual HEA

Super-cute with some funny bits that are pretty obscure but believable with this particular story. So much fun. The romance is nice, but I loved the nerdiness of our MCs (VERY knowledgeable on Sasquatch-type beings) along with MC Finn's parents who are totally special!

Humorous and witty with Hollywood-style angst and some political opining. Not a ton of relationship development, felt shortchanged in certain aspects. Plenty of sex and Bigfoot appearances.

So this author is my favorite Good Omens fanfic writer. When I found out she writes regular romance, too, I had to check it out.

This is a nice bit of romantic, low-angsty fluff. The guys are sweet, hot, and smitten. It’s fun and funny and just what I need right now in my life.
